Many of these properties are associated with the presence of amino groups in its polymer chain. A proper determination of these amino groups is very important, in order to properly specify if a given chitosan sample can be used in a particular application. Thus, in this work, initially, a comparison between the determination of the deacetylation degree by conductometry and elemental analysis was carried out using a detailed analysis of error propagation. It was shown that the conductometric analysis resulted in a simple and safe method for the determining the degree of deacetylation of chitosan. Subsequently, experiments were performed to monitor and characterize the adsorption of tetracycline on chitosan particles through kinetic and equilibrium studies. The main models of kinetics and adsorption isotherms, widely used to describe the adsorption on wastewater treatment systems and the drug loading, were used to treat the experimental data. Firstly, it was shown that an apparent linear t/q(t) ? t relationship did not imply in a pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics, differently of what has been repeatedly reported in the literature. It was found that this misinterpretation can be avoided by using non-linear regression. Finally, the adsorption of tetracycline on chitosan particles was analyzed using insights obtained from theoretical analysis, and the parameters generated were used to analyze the kinetics of adsorption, the isotherm of adsorption and to ropose a mechanism of adsorption / Devido ?s suas propriedades f?sico-qu?micas e biol?gicas, associadas ? abund?ncia e ao baixo custo da mat?ria-prima, a quitosana tem sido considerada um material de ampla aplica??o em diversos campos, tais como em sistemas de libera??o de f?rmacos.

Ion exchange resins an functional fibres :a comparative study for the treatment of brine waste water

Bongani Ndhlovu Yalala January 2009 (has links)
<p>To improve the adsorption capacity of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibres, hydrophilic amidoxime fibres were prepared by subsequent conversion of the cyano groups to an amidoxime group by reacting with hydroxylamine at 80&deg / C at an optimum amidoximation time of 2 hrs. The amidoxime fibre was hydrolyzed/alkali treated in a solution of sodium hydroxide to enhance or improve the adsorption properties. This was followed by characterization of the amidoxime and hydrolyzed fibres using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) / Fourier transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and exchange capacity (cationic and anionic). SEM showed that the hydrolysis process made the surface of Amidoxime fibre rougher than that of Polyacrylonitrile fibre. FTIR revealed that the hydrolyzed Amidoxime fibres contained conjugated imine (-C=N-) sequences. Functionalization enhanced the sorption of amidoxime fibres by an increase of 20 % in the cationic exchange capacity. This was achieved by the part conversion of the cyano groups into the carboxylic acid groups. The fibres showed faster kinetics largely due the available exchange sites on the surface of the fibres hence the equilibration was achieved much quicker.</p>

FundaÃÃo Cearense de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Cientifico e TecnolÃgico / The tururi and buriti fibers, and the castor bean stalks are extremely efficient to sorption of metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study, the adsorbents were activated with different concentrations of alkali solutions (5, 7, 10 and 15% w/v). The materials were characterized by analytical techniques as infrared, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Thermogravimetry analysis. The infrared spectra revealed that associated groups to macromolecules of hemicellulose and lignin after alkaline activation have less intensity compared to the initial samples. The XRD revealed, that after castor bean stalks alkaline activation, the presence of the cellulose type II peaks, which did not occur with tururi and buriti fibers. The fluorescence X-ray data showed that the cations present in the initial adsorbents, K+ and Ca2 + are exchanged by Cu (II), Ni (II), Cd (II) and Pb (II) in the sorption process. Studies of the influences of variables: mass of adsorbent; agitation rate; the initial pH and concentration using a fractional factorial design 24-1 demonstrated that all variables affect the response (adsorption capacity mg g-1). As a result for a larger value of qtotal, conditions were observed while maintaining the pH at 5.5; mass of the adsorbent 50 mg; agitation at 200 rpm and the initial concentration: 500 mg L-1. The adsorption kinetics revealed fast adsorption process, about 30 minutes, and good fitting to pseudo-second-order theoretical model to all adsorption process studied. Intraparticle diffusion models as Weber-Morris and Boyd were testes in order to study the limiting steps of the process. The results showed that for tururi and buriti fibers (with the exception of nickel ions) the rate-limiting step is not the intraparticle diffusion, while for the castor bean stalks, it was found that the rate-limiting step of the process is the intraparticle diffusion. The study of monoelement and multielement systems were performed at pH 5.5, initial concentrations from 20-500 mg L-1, which the experimental data were fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips theoretical models. The tururi fibers adsorption capacities (mg g-1) in monoelementar and multielement system follows the order Pb (188.79)> Cd (92.20)> Cu (32.82)> Ni (22.23) and Cd (77.53)> Pb (43.93)> Cu (24.99)> Ni (19.51), respectively. Buriti fibers adsorption capacities (g-1 mg) in monoelementar and multielement systems follows the order of Cu (143.1)> Pb (112.1)> Ni (103.7)> Cd (86.33) and Pb (69.12)> Cu (49.28)> Ni (45.10)> Cd (24.95), respectively. Castor bean stalks adsorption capacities (g-1 mg) in in monoelementar and multielement systems follows the order of Pb (175.1)> Cd (124.8)> Ni (111.1)> Cu (89.23) and Cu (56.78)> Pb (55.82)> Cd (44.72)> Ni (43.48), respectively. The results showed a better fit for the Sips model, relating to a heterogeneous adsorption. Fixed bed studies using castor bean stalks checking the influence of variables adsorbent flow (1, 2 and 3 mL min-1), the height of the column (5, 7 and 10 cm) and initial concentration (100 , 200, 300 mg L-1) by the Box-Behnken planning revealed that there were no influence between the variables in the studied. The breakthrough curves were well fitted to the Thomas model. The study in real effluent with Cu (II) (galvanoplastic sector) was carried out using the optimized condition: flow (1 ml min-1); bed height (10 cm) initial concentration: (245.5 mg L-1) and it was found adsorption capacity of 32.42 mg g-1. The mamoneira stalks adsorbent was used for five cycles to verify their potential reuse, and it was found no significant efficiency losses.

Síntese e caracterização do híbrido sílica/quitosana: estudo da interação com corante aniônico / Synthesis and characterization of hybrid silica / chitosan: a study of the interaction with anionic dye

Oliveira, Iataanderson Alves de 04 September 2009 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Organic and inorganic materials have been used as adsorbent materials of aquatic pollutants due to their both good adsorption capacities and physical and chemical stabilities. In this work, the ligand 3-aminopropytrimethoxysilane was immobilized on silica gel surface, with consecutive reactions with glutaraldehyde and chitosan. All materials were characterized by TG/DTG, DSC, FTIR, DRX and MEV, where the presence of the silica-immobilized chitosan was evidenced. The adsorption kinetics of the anionic dye remazol blue (AR) on the cross linked silica/chitosan (Sil-Quit-R) was studied in the temperature range of 25 - 55 ºC and initial dye concentration of 23 - 800 mg L-1. The results were best fitted to both the pseudo second-order Ho and McKay and the Avrami models. The AR dye adsorption at chemical equilibrium were best described using the three-parameter Redlich-Peterson I, Sips, Tóth, Baudu I and five-parameter Fritz-Schlunder IV models. From these results, the heterogeneity of the Sil-Quit-R adsorption sites was evidenced. The adsorption enthalpies (ΔadsH) were all endothermic and increased with the increasing of adsorption temperature. The negative values for ΔadsG have indicated that the adsorption processes are spontaneous. The adsorption entropies (ΔadsS) were all positive and increased with the increasing of adsorption temperature. From the thermodynamic viewpoint, the positive ΔadsS values were the adsorption driving force. The adsorption capacity of Sil-Quit-R was good, mainly related to the adsorption results at low dye concentrations in solution.

Magister Scientiae - MSc / To improve the adsorption capacity of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibres, hydrophilic amidoxime fibres were prepared by subsequent conversion of the cyano groups to an amidoxime group by reacting with hydroxylamine at 80°C at an optimum amidoximation time of 2 hrs. The amidoxime fibre was hydrolyzed/alkali treated in a solution of sodium hydroxide to enhance or improve the adsorption properties. Polyelectrolyte adsorption on oppositely charged surfaces - Conformation and adsorption kinetics

Enarsson, Lars-Erik January 2006 (has links)
This thesis presents experimental studies of polyelectrolyte adsorption on oppositely charged surfaces, where substrates of both silica and bleached softwood kraft pulp were used. A major aim of this research was to characterise the conformation of adsorbed layers of cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), in comparison to cationic dextran (Cdextran), and relate this information to the binding capacity of colloidal silica. A second aim in this thesis was to study the kinetics of the sequential adsorption of polyamide epichlorohydrine (PAE) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) on pulp fibres, and to determine the adsorption isotherms for the layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolytes on pulp fibres. The adsorption of CPAM on silica surfaces was studied using stagnation point adsorption reflectometry and quartz crystal microgravimetry to determine its adsorption kinetics as well as the dependencies of polyelectrolyte charge densities, pH, and NaCl concentration on saturation adsorption. The conformation of adsorbed layers of CPAM and Cdextran, analysed in terms of amount of water and layer thickness, was determined both before and after the secondary adsorption of colloidal silica (CS), and the adsorption of CS was also quantified as a function of the surface coverage of the polyelectrolyte. Results indicate that the charge density of CPAM controlled the amount of the polyelectrolyte adsorbed on silica surfaces at low NaCl concentrations. The adsorption of both CPAM and Cdextran on silica was shown to be effective at up to 1 M NaCl concentrations, which indicates that non-ionic interactions between the polyelectrolytes and silica contribute significantly. CS adsorption was higher on pre-adsorbed CPAM than on Cdextran. The conformation of the adsorbed layer after CS addition was seen to expand significantly in CPAM-based layers, while the Cdextran layer appeared to restore its conformation after a temporary expansion at low salt concentrations. In the second part of the thesis, the sequential adsorption of PAE and CMC on pulp fibres was determined using the polyelectrolyte titration technique. Layer-by-layer adsorption isotherms derived on fractionated pulp showed that PAE adsorbed in higher amounts than CMC did, both in terms of adsorbed mass and adsorbed charge. The adsorption of PAE was significantly slower compared to CMC, and the adsorption times required to reach 90% of the saturation adsorption were 3 and 1 min, respectively. The zeta potential of pulp fines was determined for the adsorption of the two first polyelectrolyte layers, and data indicated that the fines recharge within one minute after the polyelectrolyte additions. Reflectometry experiments regarding the sequential adsorption of PAE and CMC on silica indicated that the low-molecular-weight fraction of PAE disturbed the formation of polyelectrolyte multilayers. / QC 20101112

Towards the numerical modelling of salt / zeolite composites for thermochemical energy storage

Lehmann, Christoph 23 February 2021 (has links)
Modelling sorption equilibria and kinetics of salt/zeolite composites / Composite adsorbents consisting of a zeolite host matrix impregnated with a hygroscopic salt are a promising material class for thermochemical energy storage (TCES). They combine the high heat storage density of the salt with the easy technical manageability of the zeolite, which prevents the leakage of salt solution and inhibits volume changes upon ad- and desorption. The dynamic sorption behaviour of such composites, however, is different from the pure host matrix material. Particularly, the adsorption kinetics are slower, which leads to issues such as low and non-steady thermal output power, incomplete adsorption and long adsorption phases of TCES devices using these composite materials. Numerical modelling has proven to be a valuable tool to identify the causes for such performance limitations. Therefore, it facilitates the development of TCES devices: it allows to easily find optimum designs and operating procedures before actual prototypes have to be built. In this thesis a numerical model of a packed adsorbent bed in an open sorption chamber has been developed, implemented in the open-source finite element software OpenGeoSys and validated with experimental data. The modelling results show that established sorption kinetics models capture the dynamic sorption behaviour of salt/zeolite composites under application-relevant operating conditions. Moreover, they show that the main cause for the differences between the composites' and pure zeolite's sorption behaviour lies in their different sorption equilibria. A second focus of the thesis is to investigate the use of limited experimental data for the calibration of the numerical models. This possibility has been confirmed by dynamic sorption simulations of the composite materials. Furthermore, criteria were determined that allow the reconstruction of a robust adsorption equilibrium description from a reduced experimental data set. Finally, in the context of the Dubinin-Polanyi theory of adsorption in micropores, it has been found that the choice of a specific adsorbate density model has only a small influence on performance predictions of adsorbents for TCES. In summary, the results from this thesis will facilitate the screening of materials, reactor geometries and operating conditions via numerical simulations during the design of TCES devices based on zeolites and composite sorbents.:Used symbols and abbreviations 1.
