Interracial mumbo jumbo : Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom and Brett Bailey's theatre.Keevy, Jacqueline. January 2008
This dissertation explores the use of the Black performing body in the works Cards (2002) and Relativity: Township Stories (2006) by Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom and, iMumbo Jumbo (1997) and Big Dada: The Rise and Fall of Idi Amin (2001) by Brett Bailey. With specific reference to the colonial gaze, this dissertation attempts to locate the disruptions (if any) of the colonial gaze in these playwright-director's theatre.
The first chapter provides an overview of South African Theatre history. This chapter examines postcolonial performance theory with regards to the past and the present situation in South African theatre. Locating postcolonial performance theory with postcolonial theory discourses and looking specifically at South African theatre history. It looks specifically at the effects of colonialism, not only in terms of economic and political disempowerment but also in terms of the psychological internalisation of subject position and identity. It provides a theoretical basis, through which critical analyses of both Bailey and Grootboom's work will occur.
The second chapter examines the colonial gaze and the Black performing body. Jonathan Schroeder (1998: 58) believes that the gaze signifies “a psychological relationship of power, in which the gazer is superior to the object of the gaze.” In postcolonial theatre, through the transient nature of the performance language, one of the foci of this chapter of the dissertation is on how or whether colonial subjectivity can be re-envisioned: the disruption of the colonial gaze. In order to disrupt the colonial gaze, it becomes vital that the performing body on stage (should) become a key site of resistance. Postcolonial performance (and theory) aims to challenge the colonial imposition of identity through the human body in order for there to be a fragmentation of subjectivity. Postcolonial performance theory desires an important and effective meaning, particularly in the notions of representations and identities.
The third chapter examines the work of Brett Bailey using the following two particular texts/ case studies and analysing them: iMumbo Jumbo (1997) and Big Dada (2001), in an attempt to locate disruptions of the colonial gaze with regards to
the Black performing body or to expose the exoticism within the use of such notions as savage, primitive, strange, violent that are attached to the Black performing body in his works. In iMumbo Jumbo (1997), with an emphasis on the exotic, the sangomas, the ritual (real and performative), Bailey does incorporate indigenous performance forms into his postcolonial and intercultural theatre – however does the integration of these indigenous performance forms into a new theatre aesthetic subvert the colonial gaze? Or, rather, does it feed into a colonial fascination with African exoticism.
Big Dada (2001) is a play about the rise and fall of Idi Amin – a ruthless dictator in Uganda who, according to Peter Stearns and William Langer (2001: 1064), caused a genocide which left over 300 000 Ugandans dead . This play has both violence and the exotic as signifiers attached to the black bodies performing.
The fourth chapter examines the works of Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom, focusing particularly on Cards (2002) and Relativity: Township Stories (2006). The analyses attempt to locate disruptions of the colonial gaze with regards to the Black performing body; or to expose the extreme violence and carnality that is attached to the Black performing body in his works.
With regards to Cards (2002), the question asked is: does the use of the carnal, the raw, the sex, perpetuate a vicious cycle of colonial prejudices within South African audiences within what should be a postcolonial South African theatre arena? The colonised subject's body (in this case, the Black performer's body) has always been an “object of the coloniser's fascination and repulsion (and, in effect, possession) in sexual, pseudo-scientific and political terms” (Gilbert and Tompkins 1996: 203) (my italics). This chapter examines whether or not what is occurring in Grootboom's work/ theatre specifically is that the roles into which he has placed his Black performers are within racist discourses, “with perhaps even more emphasis on their supposed violence and sexuality” (Gilbert and Tompkins 1996: 208).
This chapter seeks to interrogate whether or not Grootboom in casting the Other, the Black performing bodies, as corporeal, carnal, instinctual, raw... with his use of full nudity, simulated sex, simulated rapes, violence, explicit language, misogyny, obscenities, murder, drug use and religious rhetoric – has reintroduced colonial
ideologies and stereotypes? Is his theatre 'black Black humour'? Reinforcing colonial ideologies of the savage? Or does Grootboom's theatre (unconsciously) aid the location of the (sometimes) nude, sexual, black performing body in the arena/ site of resistance in order to fracture the colonial gaze to further the aims of postcolonial theatre.
Relativity: Township Stories (2006) is a brutal exposure of township life and the story revolves around a serial killer, the “G-String Strangler,” who is hunting down young women at night. The play traverses the bleaker and more desperate sides of human nature. As described by Robert Greig in The Sunday Independent (2005), Relativity is a panorama of extreme emotions and violence. However, does this perpetuation of the image of the Black as violent or attaching these signifiers of extreme violence challenge the colonial imposition of identity through the human body? Seeing the Black performing body being attached to notions of extreme violence begs to ask the question: Does this subvert the colonial gaze or does it feed into a stereotype of the violent, savage Black?

The study conducted was An Appreciative Inquiry approach into the post-merger Campbell
Collections at UKZN. The study was meant to explore and discover the value of the
Campbell Collections in the new merged institution, which is the University of KwaZulu-
Natal. The study was appreciative in nature, and it took the complete interconnected
elements that affect the system into consideration. Every year since 2004, when the
University of Natal and the University of Durban Westville were officially declared as
merged, there have been various changes that took place. The merger is one huge change
project that the universities engaged in. Thus the concepts ‘merger’ and ‘change’ were used
inter-changeably in the study. The background on the merger was brought into perspective,
and an in-depth literature review on Appreciative Inquiry was conducted.
Appreciative Inquiry (AI) introduced to the study a research perspective that was very
different in focus from more traditional approaches. AI is a highly participative, systemwide
approach that seeks to identify and enhance the life-giving forces. It concentrates on
things we want to increase to add value, and it is a radical approach to understanding the
social world. It concentrates on exploring ideas that people have about what is valuable in
what they do and then tries to work out ways in which this can be built on. The emphasis is
strong on appreciating the activities and responses of people, rather than focusing on their
problems. Appreciative Inquiry is declared to be a strong pillar of research which looks to
build a productive link between people and the substance of what they talk about as past
and present capacities. In general AI studies are carried out through the use of 4-D Cycles.
The 4-Ds represent: discovery; dream; design and destiny. This study was conducted
through the application of only two Ds which are discovery and dream phases. The
questions used in data gathering were crafted based on affirmative topics to meet the
principles of AI. The interview technique was employed and carried out in the form of
individual/one-one interviews as well as through focus groups. All Campbell Collections’
staff members were invited to participate in the study, and a few former staff members
were also part of the study. The strategic decisions made about whom to invite to take part
in a study were based on their experience, familiarity, and understanding of Campbell
Collections and the merger.
The study findings revealed the strengths and value of Campbell Collections as well as the
impact of the merger, mainly in terms of decisions taken at the University’s executive level.
One limitation of the study was that it was bound to Campbell Collections; therefore, the
information generated could not be generalised and remained specific to the particular case
studied. However, the same research can be studied further to evaluate the entire postmerger

With South Africa’s momentous transition to democratic rule in 1994, the Nelson Mandela administration significantly underscored the need to erect the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as a mechanism to address the grievances, racial discrimination and violence that characterized the apartheid era. The South African government and the TRC have initiated policies to expedite reconciliation among its different races with the primary objective to recompense those who were previously marginalized and abused by the apartheid regime. Such attempts include: economic and land restitution and affirmative action. Despite these strides however, there are still enormous challenges, especially with regards to socio-economic imbalances, racial skirmishes, violence, and unresolved grievances among the victims of the apartheid era. Conceived in this way, the primary purpose of this research is to offer a broad analysis of rationale to transform some of the apartheid structural arrangements to a more egalitarian structure.
1994 heralded a new era of democratization in South Africa after long years of apartheid regime. The transition from autocratic rule to democracy has often been an excruciating one. It is no doubt that the challenges of transformation and reconciliation have resulted in the changing of the character of conflict and violence in post-apartheid South African society. This study also intends to analyse the current nature of conflict in post-apartheid South Africa such as; black on black, political assassinations and taxi violence. Although the nature of violent conflict in South Africa has transformed since post-apartheid, ostensibly, these conflicts are nevertheless rooted in apartheid. Given the foregoing, it appears that the full recovery from the apartheid era is still a far cry. “The children of today make the nation of tomorrow” : a social history of child welfare in twentieth century South AfricaMuirhead, Jennifer 03 1900 (has links)
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: “The cry of the children of the needy is bitter and heartrending, and any effort towards stilling it deserves the best support and encouragement of the community… every day it rises in despairing appeal for succour and relief.” So wrote a South African newspaper editor in the early 1900s. This “cry” was answered by the emergence of a fledgling child welfare movement in South Africa, largely under the impetus of private charities mimicking international trends – particularly those of the metropole. The 1913 Children’s Act codified child protection, whilst government policies such as child maintenance grants helped in targeting one of the key challenges of child welfare: (white) poverty. Progressively, state and welfare became ever more entwined, epitomised by the formation of the National Council of Child Welfare in 1924 and the Social Welfare Department of 1937. Whilst the state played a constructive role when the aims of child welfare organisations tallied with its own goals (such as eliminating white poverty) it took on a more malevolent form when child welfare organisations did not toe the party-line, by turning their attention from white children to black children in the late 1930s.
The movement towards an apartheid state in 1948 saw the consolidation of de facto racial policies into de juro government legislation. This thesis explores the delicate balance between maintaining state support, whilst upholding the values of independent welfare, “irrespective of race or class, of politics or creed”. Despite asserting such inclusive sentiments, borrowed from international discourses, child welfare in South Africa could not be removed from its local socio-political context. The 1953 Bantu Education Act and the 1960 Children’s Act consolidated racial separation through the unequal allocation of state resources to black and white children. Despite the muted concerns of child welfare activists, apartheid discrimination towards African children increased as the century progressed, intensifying hostility and necessitating the agency of African youth towards the apartheid government culminating in the Soweto Uprising of 16 June 1976 and its aftermath. The key aim of this thesis is to illustrate that, while government involvement in welfare brought many benefits to the South African child welfare movement, it simultaneously created a dependence that would make child welfare organisations vulnerable to racialised party politics and bureaucracy in the twentieth century. This is evidenced in the divergence of child welfare along racial lines with white children receiving care similar to that in the Anglophone west, whilst African children were largely neglected. The unequal allocation of resources according to race served to consolidate white hegemony for generations of South Africans, as the “children of today make the nation of tomorrow”. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: “Die geween van die kinders in nood is hartverskeurend en bitter, en enige pogings om hierdie nood te verlig, verdien om deur die gemeenskap ondersteun en aangemoedig te word … elke dag is daar wanhopige krete tot hulp en verligting.” Só het ʼn Suid-Afrikaanse koerantredakteur in die vroeë twintigste eeu geskryf. Die “geween” is beantwoord deur die ontstaan van ʼn kinderwelsynsbeweging in Suid-Afrika. Hierdie beweging is grootliks ondersteun deur private welsynsbewegings wat internasionale tendense nagevolg het, in besonder dié van die metropool. Die 1913 Kinderwet het kinderbeskerming gedefinieer en regeringsbeleid soos onderhoudstoekennings het terselfdertyd gehelp om een van die grootste probleme in kinderwelsyn, naamlik (wit) armoede aan te spreek. Die 1953 Wet op Bantoe-Onderwys tesame met die 1960 Kinderwet het rasseskeiding verskans deur die oneweredige toekenning van regeringshulpbronne aan swart en blanke kinders. Die hoofdoel van hierdie tesis is om te illustreer dat, alhoewel regeringsbetrokkenheid in welsyn vele voordele vir die Suid-Afrikaanse kinderwelsynsbeweging ingehou het, dit terselfdertyd ʼn soort afhanklikheid geskep het wat die kinderwelsynsorganisasies in die twintigste eeu kwesbaar gelaat het vir rasgebaseerde party politiek en burokrasie. Die kwesbaarheid word ten beste geillustreer deur die ontwikkeling van rasgebaseerde kinderwelsyn in terme waarvan wit kinders behandeling soortgelyk aan die van die Engelstalige weste ontvang het, terwyl swart kinders grootliks verwaarloos is. Compliance, compulsion and contest : aspects of military conscription in South Africa, 1952-1992Callister, Graeme 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (History))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / From 1952 until the ending of apartheid in 1994, South Africa possessed a system of compulsory military service for white males. Until 1967, conscription was not universal and men were selected by ballot to attend military training. From 1967 onwards, all medically fit white South African males were obliged to perform national service, a service which from the mid 1970s often included tours of duty on the border of Angola and South African-occupied Namibia, and later tours of duty in Angola or within the townships of South Africa herself.
This thesis looks at aspects of the public reactions to compulsory military service in white South Africa. It traces the evolution of anti-conscription sentiment amongst the white community, juxtaposed with the continued support for compulsory military service that was found in many quarters up until the end of apartheid. It makes a brief examination of the anti-conscription organisations that existed, most notably the End Conscription Campaign, analysing their impact on white society as well as discussing their limitations. The impacts of conscription are also considered, looking at some implications of compulsory military service for the men involved, for society as a whole, and for the Defence Force in which the conscripts served.
A thorough examination is also made of the motivations that existed for young men to either acquiesce to or reject military service, taking into account the unique set of circumstances that prevailed in South Africa during the military service era. While South Africa during these years has no direct parallel anywhere else in the world, this thesis briefly discusses South African conscription in an international context, demonstrating, where relevant, the similarities and differences between the South African experience and those of other Western nations, such as Britain, France, Israel and the United States of America.
While a reasonable amount of literature and other media exist pertaining to South African conscription, this thesis demonstrates how many of these works are unsatisfactory, and how the topic is in some respects becoming largely misunderstood in both academia and in wider society. The current existence of a number of false beliefs, or myths, about South African conscription is discussed, along with an assessment of how and why these myths were created.

MA / African horsesickness is a disease endemic in Sub Saharan Africa affecting horses, a non-native species, which are extremely susceptible to this disease. Both the ‘dunkop’ form (with its dramatic high fever, laboured breathing, frothy nasal discharge and sudden death) and the ‘dikkop’ form (with its swollen head and eyes and bleeding in the membranes of the mouth and eyes) have been visited upon equine populations and their human owners in successive epidemics through the earliest colonial settlement until
recent times.
This thesis traces the development of veterinary science in South Africa and the effect it had on the changing ideas surrounding African horsesickness. It explores not only the
veterinary progress in the country but also the impact of the progress on African horsesickness as other diseases received attention. The discussion traces the disease from one of the major epidemics ever encountered in the country, in the mid nineteenth century, to the beginning of the development of veterinary services in South Africa when little was known about African horsesickness. It illustrates the implications of a country's struggle with animal disease, the reasons for a lack of knowledge and the
ramifications of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute’s interventions. This thesis shows
that African horsesickness not only had an impact on the veterinary developments of the country but was also indirectly involved in the South African War, 1899-1902. It demonstrates the impact of disease during wartime while illustrating the importance of horses during such difficult times.
Thus, this thesis draws on works on animal diseases and on social history to explore not
only the effect African horsesickness had historically on equines, but the effects it had
more broadly on southern African society. This study is intended to bring insight into the
social history of the disease itself: how it was experienced by livestock owners and also how settler and indigenous efforts were turned towards combating this dramatic disease.

Thesis (MA)-- Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study pictorial Africana are used to sketch a socio-historical image of certain aspects of
Wellington (previously known as Waggonmakers Valley) during the period 1657 to 1900.
Together with written sources such as letters, diaries and travel diaries, the pictorial sources (in
this case paintings, pictures and maps) are considered primary sources.
Although the inhabitants of Waggonmakers Valley and later Wellington clearly developed an
own identity, Wellington cannot be viewed in isolation. The town and region are placed in the
broader context of the Drakenstein Valley and the Western Cape. The establishment and
development of the town are placed within the prevalent political and economic climate of that
time. Historical highlights of the town's history are given in short. A list of artists, pictorial
works and place of conservation where these pictorial works are being conserved was compiled.
It was attempted to determine the artists' connection with the Drakenstein Valley,
Waggonmakers Valley and Wellington in each discussion.
In the discussion of the territory (bodem) the Waggonmakers Valley is placed in the context of
the Drakenstein Valley. In this discussion the discovery and settlement of the valley are
considered, as well as the naming of the Drakenstein Valley, Waggonmakers Valley and
Wellington. The appearance of the valley, mountains, hills, as well as the vegetation, animal life
and bird life are discussed. The influence of the Berg River and other rivers on the inhabitants'
lives is included in the discussion, as well as relevant folk-tales and popular beliefs. Where
applicable, various uses for plants (e.g. medicinal) in these people's daily lives are discussed.
In the discussion of the church the following aspects are considered: the beginning of
missionary work in the Waggonmakers Valley, the secession of the church and the subsequent
establishment of Wellington, as well as some religious aspects such as the "Wederdoper" Sect
and the big revival of 1860. Festivals, sports and recreation depict the social activities of the
Wellington people up to the end of the nineteenth century. In the discussion of the architecture,
aspects such as political, economic and social influences on building style as well as building
materials and building methods were taken into account. To illustrate: the opening of the
Wellington railway line and the opening of Bainskloof Pass influenced the architecture of the
town and region. Influencing factors on the lay-out of the town as well as the meaning of
BainskloofPass for Wellington were considered. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Pikturale Africana word in hierdie studie as 'n bron aangewend om 'n kultuurhistoriese beeld
met betrekking tot sekere aspekte van Wellington, voorheen bekend as Wagenmakersvallei,
gedurende die periode 1657 tot 1900, te skets. Die pikturale bronne is saam met die geskrewe
bronne, wat briewe, dagboeke en reisjoernale insluit, as primere bronne beskou. Die pikturale
bronne verwys in hierdie geval na skilderye, tekeninge, prente en kaarte.

Wellington. Die voorkoms van die vallei, berge, heuwels, sowel as die plantegroei, dier- en
voellewe word bespreek. Die invloed van die Bergrivier en ander riviere op die lewens van die
mense word in die bespreking ingesluit, sowel as relevante volksvertellings en volksgelowe. Die
gebruik van plante vir medisinale en ander gebruike in die daaglikse lewe van die mense, is waar
toepaslik bespreek.
In die bespreking van die kerk is daar gekyk na die ontstaan van sendingwerk in die
Wagenmakersvallei, die afstigting van die kerk, die gevolglike ontstaan van Wellington en
enkele geestelike aspekte soos die Wederdopersekte en die groot herlewing van 1860.
Feesvieringe, sport en ontspanning skets die sosiale bedrywighede van die Wellingtonners tot
die einde van die negentiende eeu. Aspekte soos politieke, ekonomiese en maatskaplike
invloede wat boustyle beinvloed het, sowel as boumateriaal en -metodes, is in ag geneem in die
bespreking van die argitektuur. Ter illustrasie: die opening van die spoorlyn tot by Wellington
en die opening van Bainskloofpas het 'n invloed gehad op die argitektuur van die dorp en
omgewing. Daar is gekyk na faktore wat die dorpsuitleg beinvloed het, asook die betekenis van
Bainskloofpas vir Wellington.
