'n Vergelykende studie van Ingrid Winterbach se Die boek van toeval en toeverlaat (2006) en Etienne van Heerden se Asbesmiddag (2007)

The focus of this dissertation is a comparative study of Ingrid Winterbach's Die boek van toeval en toeverlaat (2006) [The Book of Happenstance (2008)] and Etienne van Heerden's Asbesmiddag (2007) [Asbestos Afternoon] within an intertextual and socio-political framework. Both novels show strong links to the literary traditions of which they form part through a high degree of intertextuality with literary predecessors (intertexts from Afrikaans and South African English literature, but also classical intertexts emanating from the larger field of world literature). Both texts exhibit an overt metatextual consciousness. The protagonists in each of these novels are portrayed as novelists. One of the main aims of the study is to interrogate the implied ideological perspectives in both novels - the nature and extent of the reflection of the current South African socio-political system. Winterbach and Van Heerden‘s texts may both be read as fictionalised forms of "protest" against the extrinsic South African socio-political order. These forms of protest focus on the inevitable change from one stage/era to the next, the old South Africa to the new, in a quest for artistic (creative writing and literature) and cultural (Afrikaner identity and language) survival. Die boek van toeval en toeverlaat (2006) and Asbesmiddag (2007) contribute to contemporary discourse by offering implied ideological insights into specific socio-political and metatextual phenomena. This is done in fictional guise - through the characters populating the fictional world of the novel, and also through the authors' implied ideological views. Both novels are intensely concerned with language issues, as well as the status of literature as cultural product. On the metatextual level theoretical issues concerning literature are in the focus, such as the precarious position of the novelist (and the academic) in contemporary South African society, and the status of literature and Afrikaans as a minority language. The purpose of this comparative study is to look at the metatextual, ideological and linguistic aspects of the novels through an extensive intertextual study, in order to interrogate and illustrate the socio-political discourse embedded in them.

Selling translation rights in trade publishing : case studies of Dutch translations of Afrikaans fiction in the Netherlands and Belgium

The reading and buying market for Afrikaans fiction is limited due to historical and economical reasons. It can thus be argued that in order to expand the market for South African Afrikaans trade publishers and authors' novels, a work needs to be translated via the selling of translation rights with the assistance of the publisher or literary agents, into a language that has similar needs in terms of cultural consumption, for example book reading culture. Due to the colonial influence of the Dutch on South African culture and the development of Afrikaans, this study explores the selling of translation rights of Afrikaans fiction to trade publishers in The Netherlands and Belgium. The polystem theory is also used to illustrate the movement of languages from a peripheral position to semi-peripheral and central position within a global literary polysystem. A qualitative and exploratory research design is used. Secondary research in the form of a literature review combines theoretical information, clarifies terms and provides context from which primary research develops. In terms of primary research, interviews with key informants in the Belgian, Netherlands and South African publishing industry were conducted. Case studies of South African crime author Deon Meyer, and historical romance author Irma Joubert provide in-depth analysis of success factors, process and factors that influenced the selling of subsidiary rights to Dutch trade publishers. Lastly, visibility and discoverability of Afrikaans fiction on an international rights trading platform, as well as interaction amongst South African and foreign publishers were observed, at the largest book rights fair, the Frankfurt Book Fair. The findings of this study provide practical information and act as reference guide to role players in the publishing industry, including authors, trade publishers and literary agents. Recommendations for best practice in the selling of subsidiary rights are included, as well as initiatives for further research, experimentation, investment and development of the selling of subsidiary rights to European trade publishers to ultimately grow the Afrikaans fiction book buying and reading markets. / Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Information Science / MIS / Unrestricted

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A comparative study between a Dutch postcolonial novel, Een vlek op de rug (1963) by J. van de Walle and an Afrikaans post-apartheid novel, Foxtrot van die Vleiseters (1993) by Eben Venter, produces fascinating results. Despite dissimilarities, e.g. the almost thirty years that separate these two texts and the fact that the stories take place in different centuries on different continents, there is an unmistakable unity of intention that binds them together. The similarities are most clearly seen in the criticism of two discriminatory policies, namely that of colonialism and apartheid (which can also be seen as a form of colonialism) respectively. In both novels the narrator attempts to come to terms with the past and his own feelings of guilt. Both narrators write from a socio-politically advantaged position with on the one hand mixed feelings of empathy with the suppressed other and problematic identification with their own group on the other hand. This study investigates ways in which these feelings of guilt manifest and how the storyteller deals with his conflicting emotions through the therapeutic process of telling the story. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: ’n Vergelykende studie tussen ’n Nederlandse postkoloniale roman, Een vlek op de rug (1963) deur J. van de Walle en ’n Afrikaanse post-apartheid roman Foxtrot van die Vleiseters (1993) deur Eben Venter, lewer boeiende resultate. Ten spyte van verskille soos die tydsgaping van 30 jaar tussen die verskyning van die twee romans en die feit dat die verhale afspeel op twee verskillende kontinente, in twee verskillende eeue, is daar tog sterk ooreenkomste wat ’n vergelykende studie tussen hierdie twee tekste sinvol maak. Die parallel is daarin gelee dat beide romans kritiek wil lewer op ’n onderdrukkende sisteem, hetsy kolonialisme of apartheid (wat ook gesien kan word as ’n vorm van kolonialisme). Die vertellers in beide verhale probeer om, vanuit ’n posisie van sosio-politiese bevoorregting, skuldgevoelens oor die verlede te verwerk. In beide gevalle vertoon die verteller empatie met die onderdrukte ander, maar ’n onoorbrugbare afstand bly enersyds bestaan. Andersyds is daar sprake van ’n problematiese identifisering met die eie groep omdal die verteller homself nie ten voile met hulle kan assosieer nie. C. Louis Leipoldt and the making of a South African modernism

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: C. Louis Leipoldt had, in his lifetime and after his death, a celebrated reputation as an important Afrikaans poet in South Africa. He remains most remembered for his contribution to the growth of Afrikaans literature and for the significance of his poetry in helping to establish Afrikaans literature in the early part of the twentieth century in South Africa. He is also mostly remembered for his recipe books and food and wine guides, as well as his career as a paediatrician. Between 1980 and 2001, scholarly work was done to offer a reappraisal of Leipoldt’s literary works. During this period, previously unpublished material written by Leipoldt was made publicly available. Three novels by Leipoldt, written in English, were published at irregular intervals between 1980 and 2001. The novels cast Leipoldt in a different light, suggesting that as an English-language writer he was against many of the ideas he was associated with when viewed as an Afrikaans-language writer. These ideas, for the most part, linked Leipoldt to the Afrikaner nationalist project of the twentieth century and co-opted him to Afrikaner nationalist policies of racial segregation based on the campaigning for group identity. The three English-language novels, collectively making up the Valley trilogy, not only reveal Leipoldt’s opposition to the nationalist project but also draw attention to some of his other work in Afrikaans, in which this same ideological opposition may be noted. In this thesis I argue that Leipoldt’s Valley trilogy, as well as some of his other, Afrikaans works, not only refute the nationalist project but offer a reading of South African modernity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This reading of historical events in South Africa that reveals the trajectory of the country’s modernity is strongly indicative of a unique literary modernism. It is my argument that Leipoldt’s Valley trilogy shows a modernist critique of the historical events it presents. Because the concept of a South African modernism in literature has not yet been fully defined, it is also an aim of this thesis to propose that Leipoldt’s works contribute a broad but sustained literary outlook that covers his own lifespan (1880-1947) as well as the historical period he examines in the Valley trilogy (the late 1830s -the late 1920s/early 1930s). This literary outlook, I argue, is a modernist outlook, but also a transplantation of a Western understanding of what modernism is to the South African context in which there are crucial differences. This thesis hopes to arrive at an outcome that binds Leipoldt’s anti-nationalism to his literary critique of the modernity he explores in the Valley trilogy, thereby proving that Leipoldt could be read as a South African literary modernist. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: C. Louis Leipoldt het in sy leeftyd en na sy dood 'n gevierde reputasie behou as 'n belangrike Afrikaanse digter in Suid-Afrika. Thesis (MEd) -- Stellenbosch University, 1991. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study aims at contributing towards the improvement of teaching, in secondary schools, of written composition and literature in Afrikaans as a first language. · For this purpose, an outline of the relevant literature is presented. It is evident that the teaching of Afrikaans is not entirely sound. As simple solution does not exist; however, this study is an attempt to improve the present situation by focussing on integrated teaching and on the implementation of the media. Technological development puts the media within reach of more people each day. Pupils spend a great deal of time watching television, films and videos; or listening to the radio, records and cassettes. They read newspapers and magazines. This study maintains that the media should therefore be utilized to advance the teaching of Afrikaans, as all communicative skills will then improve in particular reading and writing. An integrative approach to teaching is widely recognised as the ideal. Neuropsychological research has shown that the human brain functions optimally when teaching is integrated. Ideally, in regard to the teaching of a language, composition writing and literature study should merge. The current South African curriculum does not as yet place enough emphasis on this aspect. This study concludes that there is a need for integrated teaching to be introduced into the curriculum for Afrikaans as first language. A second conclusion is that the media, which can serve as device for blending written composition and literature teaching, is not yet exploited effectively. Pupils display an ardent interest in the media and it follows that the media should be used intentionally and as a prominent component of the teaching programme. An integrated teaching programme, which focusses on the media, is proposed in this study. Practical suggestions are made in this regard, proving that the media can serve as crucial point of integration for the teaching of written composition and literature. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie studie is om deur 'n oorsig van die relevante literatuur 'n bydrae te lewer tot die onderrig van stelwerk en letterkunde in Afrikaans as Eerste Taal in die senior sekondere skoolfase. Dit is duidelik dat alles nie wel is met die onderrig van Afrikaans nie. 'n Enkelvoudige oplossing is nie moontlik nie, maar hierdie studie wil probeer om die betreklik negatiewe beeld wat bestaan, te verbeter. Die invalshoek wat gekies is, is die van mediagerigtheid. Die patr.oon wat gevolg is, is 'n ge1ntegreerde onderrigbenadering. Tegnologiese ontwikkeling plaas die media binne al meer mense se bereik en dit is 'n werklikheid dat leerlinge baie tyd aan televisie, rolprente, radio, musiekvideo's, liedjies, koerante en tydskrifte bestee. In hierdie studie is van die standpunt ui tgegaan dat hierdie tendens tot voordeel van Afrikaans aangewend moet word om die media te benut ten einde leerlinge se lees- e~ skryfvaardighede en dus oak hulle kommunikatiewe vaardighede te ontwikkel. 'n Ge1ntegreerde onderrigbenadering word allerwee as die ideaal erken. Neuropsigologiese navorsing het getoon dat die menslike brein optimaal funksioneer wanneer onderrig ge1ntegreerd aangebied word. Wat die komponente van taalonderrig betref, is die ideaal dat die stelwerk en "letterkunde ten nouste ge1ntegreer behoort te word. Die huidige situasie in Suid-Afrika vertoon egter nog leemtes, want binne die bestaande kurrikulum kom ge1ntegreerde onderrig nog nie tot sy reg nie. Die studie kom dan tot die eerste gevolgtrekking dat daar wel 'n behoefte bestaan aan ge1ntegreerde onderrig in die kurrikulum vir Afrikaans Eerste Taal. 'n Tweede belangrike gevolgtrekking is dat die media as ontmoetingspunt van stelwerk en letterkunde nie genoegsaam ontgin word nie. Aangesien leerlinge so 'n intense belangstelling toon in die media, is dit net logies dat die media grater prominensie verkry binne die huidige kurrikulum deur die bewustelike inskakeling van hierdie media in die onderrigprogram. Aan die hand van praktiese voorstelle en wenke is in hierdie studie 'n ge1ntegreerde onderrigprogram vir stelwerk en letterkunde met as fokuspunt die media, voorgestel. Op die wyse is bewys gelewer dat die media wel as integrasiepunt van stelwerk en letterkunde kan dien.

Thesis (DLitt (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation studies the depiction of character subjectivity in two text series of Alexander Strachan and Breyten Breytenbach. Strachan’s first three prose works are dealt with as a trilogy wherein one main character, Lenka, traverses three texts. Breytenbach’s five autobiographical prose works about visits to South Africa are also dealt with as a text series wherein one main character, Breytenbach, is depicted. In both instances the subjectivity, as portrayed by these authors, is read as a nomadic subjectivity, a term borrowed from the French thinkers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. The study assumes the form of a Deleuze-Guattarian reading of Strachan and Breytenbach’s work with a sustained focus on the depiction of the nomadic subject in the works of both authors. During the course of the study many philosophical concepts, developed in the work of Deleuze and Guattari, are explained and implemented as thinking and reading instruments whereby the prose texts are read in a new perspective. Although a Deleuze-Guattarian reading of prose texts is a relatively uncharted territory in circles of Afrikaans literary theory, this study purports to indicate that when a schizo-analytical view of subjectivity is used to analyse the functioning of character subjectivity within literary works, the texts gain new life in interesting ways. Using the concept of the nomadic subject empowers me to establish a useful reading strategy for the reading of a character who refuses to become wholly subjected to the text and the world within which he lives and who rather experiences an existence of perpetual becomings. Eventually it is suggested that the creation of a nomadic character is not only dependent upon a different grasp of subjectivity as indicated in the text, but that the writing of a particular, revolutionary form of literature, a minor literature, is implied. The nomadic subject’s being implies perpetual becomings, and a successful literary portrayal of this subject must depict such becomings at stylistic and formal levels. This study moves systematically from an analysis of nomadic subjects in literary texts to the more general question of how a minor literature functions so that the nomadic being of the character is also kept alive in the form and style of the text.

A Translation project submitted to the Faculty of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts (Translation). / This case study investigates and analyses the transfer of the socio-political elements of meaning, in the translated text, A Season in Paradise (1985). The study attempts to discover and account for any factors which may have impacted on the transfer of the socio-political elements from the source text. to make the study as systematic and as objective as possible, an adaptation of the model of analysis proposed by Lambert and Van Gorp is used. Lambert and Van Gorp are theorists who fall within the branch of translation studies called Descriptive Translation studies. The adaptation of the Lambert and Van Gorp model takes into account the factors which could have influenced the translator's reading of the literary text and which could have impacted on her translation strategy. The macro-analysis establishes the background to the translation and compares the physical features and the publishing circumstances of the target text with that of the source text. It contains a discussion on any similarities or differences found. On the micro-level, specific extracts with a socio-political theme are compared using selected linguistic concepts from Halliday's An Introduction to Functional Grammar as interpretive tools. The shifts discovered here were linked to the discoveries made in the macro-level analysis. It: was determined that prevalent reading strategies at the time did to a limited extent influence the transfer of the socio-political elements of meaning present in the text. This study is done to shed more light on the process of translating a literary work and the factors which may influence this process. / Andrew Chakane 2018
