Velhice na cultura contemporânea

Danielle de Andrade Pitanga 14 December 2006 (has links)
O corpo é sobrevalorizado e super exigido. The scope of this research is to investigate the specific ways of getting old in the cultural context of nowadays. Taking in account that each individual gets old in an absolutely particular way, we can say that there are several forms of getting old and several kinds of old aged. The nowadays consume society, in a fast and frenetic way is marked by the culture of image. Body is super valorized and requested. Success and happiness imply in the acceptance of models printed in the narcisistic charm, beauty and youth. In the opposite side is the old age that, unavoidably, uses to prior negative attributes: decrepitude, nostalgia, degeneration, decline, obsolescence and improductivity. It is thus created a scenery that leads to the idea of rejection and fear to get old due to the myth of everlasting youth. Reflection over exacerbated narcisism and worship to the body, led me to think and question what would the position to old people be? Apparently, all leads to believe that is exactly the nowhere. The proposal is only to give a chance to these old people, i.e., give them a place, and, above all, the desire of giving them voice, by listening their speeches. To achieve this goal, six interviews were taken with old aged people of both sexes, over 60 years old, of medium class, all of them actives, keeping some kind of intellectual or physical activity. It is a theoretical-clinical research, of psychoanalytic inspiration, despite the most recent contributions of authors that deal with the matter of getting old and old aged, have importance to the discussion. The research has the character of clinical method, because the clinical fragments of some old aged attended by me in consultory and the answers were submitted to interpretation, serving them to illustrate the theory

Um certo olhar sobre a velhice : a narrativa memorialista de Pedro Nava / A certain look about old age: a narrative memoir of Peter Nava

Angela Maria Carneiro Silva 07 December 2001 (has links)
This work aims to investigate the changes of aging that occur through the narratives produced by the memories. Aims to emphasize the specificity of the role of memory in the aging process and its transformation strength and endurance. The relevance of the topic is linked to marked expression that the number of older persons has acquired in recent years by gaining greater visibility, imposing itself as a group with demands and characteristics. In the study, articulate the concepts of subject, memory and narrative. The first part develops the notion of the subject from a central self, foundation of a unit of expression, until the fragmentation of that self, which becomes múltitiplo and critical expression of modern man. In the second part, the study of memory, follow the passage of a memory defined as permanent and breeding for a description of memory as a creative skill, able to retrospectively produce new narratives. In the third part, we study the concept of narrative, exploring many aspects beyond the literary field. Finally, conceptual network with the subject - Memory - narrative established, we recognize the work of Pedro Nava the emergence of multiple narrators, who, with old age, rather than defend and deny life, accept the challenge of a confrontation and claim , forged their differences.

Emotional Intelligence at Mid Life: A Cross Sectional Investigation of Structural Variance, Social Correlates, and Relationship to Established Personality and Ability Taxonomies

Chapman, Benjamin P. 08 1900 (has links)
Emotional Intelligence (EI) has been relatively unstudied after young adulthood. Yet there are a variety of reasons to expect that EI may be different at mid life than in young adulthood. Normative life experiences may lead to increases in EI, and as the array of different environments and experiences increases with age, one might expect greater individual differences in EI. Similarly, if EI is located somewhere at the intersection of personality and intelligence, as some have speculated, it may follow a course of structural differentiation similar to cognitive abilities. EI may be more closely linked to social variables such as loneliness and friendships at mid life, and its relation to established personality and ability factors such as the Big Five (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness) and fluid and crystallized abilities may also vary with age. These hypotheses were investigated in samples of 292 young adults and 246 mid life adults, using the Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Inventory, the NEO-Five Factor Personality Inventory, markers of crystallized and fluid ability from Horn's Crystallized/Fluid Sampler, and a variety of other measures. Mid life adults scored higher on overall EI scores, but evidenced no greater range of individual differences than did young adults. A series of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed no greater differentiation in the mid life sample either among dimensions of EI or between EI and personality and intelligence variables. Finally, EI appeared equally predictive of social variables in each sample. Results are discussed from the perspective of lifespan and aging literature on emotion, personality, and social functioning. Qualifications for the inference of age-related change in cross sectional designs are considered, along with advantages and disadvantages of factor-analytic and covariance structure modeling methodology. Implications, particularly for psychotherapy with each age group, are discussed.

The present work comes down to a research carried out in Paulo Afonso City, Bahia interland, with six male elderly who take part in the Third Age Project (Third Age Open University) as well as the community six elderly. The general purpose was to look over their perception about the roles experienced along the vital cycle of the family. Individual appointments were achieved, which were transcribed and analysed by topics. The study shows the strictness from the old men s role in our culture, which begins with the son, uncle, brother, husband, home supporter and grandfather. These old people came from traditional families in which the roles were strict and hierarchicals, without an opening for dialogues among one another. The son had no active voice in the family while the father was the supporter, emotionally far and without setting any affectionate relationship with wife or children. This behaviour is clearly presented along from the interviewers reports. These old people have been reproducing the same family dynamics in their general relationship, as they use to do with their own family. In both groups, the hierarchy was clearly presented. The difference is set up in the perspective and future plans between the Reviver Project old people and the community one. As the first ones show themselves more optimistcs, the community one show some bigger convenience as well as some lack of perspective. We can also realize some contraditions between the two groups: both groups asserted that beforetime they were more respected and beloved, despite of the few laws protecting them; although, they told that nowadays they have been respected by the young and that they shouldn t cry out against the family and the social relationship as well. We hope that this work may be a contribution to the ones who are interested in the old people affairs as well as to the ones who deal with families affairs / Diante do aumento do número de idosos, na população mundial e brasileira, tornase importante a realização de estudos e pesquisas na área que apontem formas eficazes de intervenção e que contribuam para nortear os profissionais das ciências humanas e sociais no atendimento e na implantação de serviços e programas voltados para esta população.

The inexorable deterioration of chronic degenerative diseases brings the elderly to a paradox, that is, on the one hand, the threat of annihilation is painful, causing anguish and suffering; on the other hand, it makes them prone to assigning new meanings to their existence, reconsidering their perspectives in order to find reasons to live. The restlessness in face of the unfathomable limits of life, which takes shape with our growing consciousness of mortality itself, requires that the elderly take charge of what ails them. Thus, this work seeks to grasp the modes through which the elderly suffering from chronic degenerative diseases subjectify aging, falling ill and dying. The participants in this study were five old-age individuals suffering from chronic diseases both in and out of hospital facilities. The tools utilized included narrative interviews carried out individually with each participant and a Field Journal. The narratives collected from the elderly and the notes taken in the field sessions were analyzed from the Foucauldian discourse analysis approach. Drawing on Foucault’s writings, the research findings and the successive implications and problems we proposed allowed us to locate old-age in the realm of ethics, aesthetics and stylistics of existence. From this point of view, the participants’ accounts revealed unique elements of subjectivity, of producing their existence and of positioning themselves in face of life and death. Such production of subjectivity is based on an ethical-aesthetical model. The interviewees sought to re-create and re-invent their own aging while seeking to invent their own selves like works of art, devising and assigning life with a particular style. We look at old-age through the angle of the art of living sustained by self-care which also entails the ineluctable caring others.

Carolina Parente de Andrade 26 March 2012 (has links)
The elderly now occupies 11.3% of the brazilian population and it has afforded the society for being increasingly dealing with issues related to aging.
