A follow-up study of graduates, post graduates and those qualified to teach by taking certain classes in agricultural education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute since 1918Pulley, Mason H. January 1940 (has links)
In this thesis the author has conscientiously attempted to portray in clear fashion the status of all V.P.I. graduates, post graduates, and those qualified to teach in vocational agriculture since 1918.
The material collected, it is hoped, will serve as a source of information for professors at V.P.I. who have to do with guidance and placement. Furthermore, it is expected that the information contained herein, will show certain pertinent facts concerning the department of vocational education in question.
Is the department efficient? Do its graduates secure jobs? Are salaries commensurate with time spent in securing degrees? Does the higher degree have any significance so far as increase in salary or steps in advancement are concerned? Have the V.P.I. graduates obtained positions of unusual responsibility and honor? Has service rendered by these graduates been hit or miss, or has it been constructive and definite over a long period of time? What has been the percentage of V.P.I. agricultural men who have entered occupations allied to farming? Are there any facts which indicate success n these allied occupations?
Such questions as the above, and others, are answered in this thesis.
In attempting to collect the information mentioned above the author has made use of the Alumni Office files; the records in offices of the various supervisors of Agricultural Education - Dr. W.S. Newman, State Board of Education, Richmond, Va.; Mr. D.J. Howard, Assistant State Supervisor, Winchester, Va.; Mr. T.V. Downing, District Supervisor, Ivor, Va.; Mr. J.O. Hoge, District Supervisor, Blacksburg, Va.; Mr. F.B. Cale, District Supervisor, Appomattox, Va.; department files; Alumni files; Registrar's office; Cormier's thesis and questionnaires.
Grateful acknowledgment is made to these men as well as to Professors E.C. Magill, H.C. Groseclose, H.W. Sanders, and other school officials who have rendered valuable assistance in the arduous task of preparing this thesis. / Master of Science

Effectiveness of farmer groups as tools of extension service delivery : The case of Makhuduthamaga-Sekhukhune (Limpopo Province)Harry, Mashiane Papie January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (M. Tech. Agriculture) -- Central University of Technology, Free state, 2012 / Small-scale and subsistence farmers in general lack knowledge and information as a result of limited personal contact at grassroots level with extension workers. Therefore, the formation of farmer groups needs to be encouraged in most rural areas as tools of extension delivery. The value of farmer groups for quality decision making and generating of new ideas is well known, and therefore, the use of group contact may accelerate capacity building and empowerment to subsistence farmers.
The problem under investigation is the effectiveness of farmer groups as tools of extension delivery in Makhuduthamaga in Sekhukhune District. The investigation seeks to establish the factors that influence the effectiveness of the farmer group in Makhuduthamaga local municipality. This study was conducted in the Makhuduthamaga local municipality in Sekhukhune District. Data was gathered through two questionnaires, one for farmers and one for extension workers. The study applied quantitative methodology, cluster sampling and non-probability sampling methods, and used field interviews with structured questionnaires.
The study found that there are many stakeholders involved in the formation of farmer groups, such as NGOs, social welfare and extension workers, and the initiation by the different stakeholders has an influence on the development of the groups. Most of the farmer groups were initiated by NGOs, the reason being the financial support offered. The effectiveness of the selected farmer groups on Makhuduthamaga municipality is influenced by group dynamic factors. These factors include group size and gender composition, updating of the constitution, and the frequency of group meetings.
The respondents highlighted the fact that there is a poor relationship within the groups, poor leadership, misuse of funds, lack of knowledge and division in the groups. There is a culture of not believing and/or not trusting the local people, and it is difficult to disclose information.
The number of extension workers is still small in relation to the size of the farming population to be served. Stakeholders will learn from the study that the formation of farmer groups should serve the interests of the farmers, not of the institutions. The training institutions should base the training of extension workers on the needs of the farmers. The farmers should strive for self-reliance in order to sustain their farming enterprises. Extension workers should be formally trained on group dynamics, because agriculture in rural areas is about people working together. Government should minimise the top down approach and institutionalise the participatory extension approach methodology.

for BSc (Agric)-students. An extensive European study tour was undertaken with the aim
of investigating and evaluating existing career orientation programmes and/or student enrichment
endeavours at the various tertiary institutions especially universities. The effectiveness
of these programmes was evaluated with the aim of utilizing and implementing aspects of
them. In this study the career orientation enrichment programme for BSc (Agric)-students
that was already designed and implemented at the University of Pretoria in 1994, is
described. The needs of the BSc (Agric)-students before and after the implementation of this
programme were determined as well as those of the partners in the agricultural industry.
Another aim of this study is to describe the foundation, design and implementation of a
scientific, accountable career orientation enrichment programme for BSc (Agric)-students at
the University of Pretoria and to evaluate the outcome thereof.
The various career development and student development theories are elucidated and
described as a foundation for an accountable career orientation enrichment programme for
tertiary students. An overview is given of career orientation programmes and initiatives in
an international, national and local context. The phenomenon of the fast changing world-ofwork
is described and defined more precisely through a literature study with reference to the implications for the training of and career orientation regarding the student in the Science of
Agriculture. An investigation was done of the career (and life-) skills that graduates have
to attain. The needs and views of BSc (Agric)-students (before and after the programme implementation)
and partners in the agricultural industry were extracted. A summary is given
of the arguments put forward in this thesis together with some recommendations that have
emerged from this research. Proposals are made for the initiation of a career centre for
students at the University of Pretoria. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. (Sielkundige Opvoedkunde)

Previous issue date: 2012-03-29 / The crisis within the accumulation of capital which has been happening to almost four
decades in the capitalist countries brought some deeper changes to the manners of
production and in the work environment. Technological developments related to the new
forms of production organization turned to require a new profile of worker, different from
that one who was imposed by rigidity and fragmentation of the Taylor and Ford?s system.
Taking into consideration that thechanges in thework areheterogeneous and
comprehending that they need to be analyzed in relation to the geographic region and to
the productive sector in which they occur, delimited as an object of study the conditions of
employment and labor of agricultural technicians who work in the CRAJUBAR Triangle,
(it is how is popularly called a specific territory in the region of Cariri in the Southern
Cear?). Our aim was to analyze how the productive restructuring process imposed reforms
to the educational systems and caused the crisis to agriculture, affecting the new
graduates?s procedures and formation trajectories from the Cratocampus of the Instituto
Federal do Cear? (IFCE/Crato). It is a basic research of qualitative analysis and descriptive
approach in which was used as data collection instruments, the following primary sources:
a) internal documents of IFCE Crato (Institutional Development Plan, Institutional
Pedagogical Plan, Educational Project Course, school records of recently new graduates
ones and subjects guidelines); b) questionnaires applied to teachers, businessmen and
landowners; c) transcription of interviews applied to businessmen and rural producers; d)
field diary (record of visits to farmers). For a characterization of the agricultural production
in the Crajubar Triangle we used statistical data from IPECE and IBGE. The data which
were analyzed reveled that the student?s process of technical-professional education of
IFCE/Crato were influenced by the conceptions of the School-farm System and by the
conventional agriculture, without taking account of studies about family agriculture (the
major responsible for agricultural production in the CRAJUBAR Triangle). The chances of
employment for the graduates of IFCE/Crato on medium and large range agricultural
companies are very rare. The real job opportunities are in the companies of technical
assistance and rural extension, which ones that aim to assist farming families to develop a
model of agriculture that must be compatible to the semi arid Northeast region. However,
the process of technical-professional education in IFCE/Crato is based on the effort to
insert technological advances into the production processes of agribusiness. This option, on
the detriment of the studies about family farming, distanced the qualification process of
students of IFCE/Crato from reality of farming on the CRAJUBAR triangle, revealing the
belief in the universality and neutrality of technology as if it could be simply transplanted
business model to the family agricultural development model. Nevertheless, this apolitical
character of the technical-professional education of IFCE/Crato adds itself to the fact of the
main opportunity for integration of graduates to the labor market consist on the offering of
temporary work, with flexible relations and poor working conditions offered, by a public
company of the Cear? State.
fragmenta??o do taylorismo-fordismo.
no Tri?ngulo CRAJUBAR, Regi?o do Cariri, no Sul do Estado do Cear?.
(IFCE/Crato).
produ??o agr?cola do Tri?ngulo CRAJUBAR, utilizamos dados estat?sticos do IPECE e do
IBGE.
As

Evaluation of nutritional, chemotherapeutic and educational approaches to manage gastrointestinal nematodes and improve small-scale goat farming.Vatta, Adriano Francis. January 2007 (has links)
Small-scale goat farmers from south-western KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa, identified gastrointestinal helminths, dry-season feed scarcity and poor reproductive performance as major production constraints and highlighted the paucity of information on goat health and management. The research and extension processes adopted to address these problems comprised on-station experimentation, followed by on-farm validation combined with the participatory dissemination of both study findings and relevant information on goat health care. The approach included the use of the FAMACHA© system to assess anaemia, a characteristic symptom of infection with the gastrointestinal nematode, Haemonchus contortus (Rudolphi, 1803). On-station experimentation indicated that urea-molasses block supplementation during the dry, winter season was a cost-effective option. Unfortunately, when tested on-farm, the value of such supplementation proved inconclusive, possibly due to low block consumption and further research into alternative and palatable protein supplements for goats is suggested. However, tactical anthelmintic treatment with ivermectin effectively reduced faecal egg counts and is recommended, as is concurrent symptomatic anthelmintic treatment, as determined by the FAMACHA© system, since this practice appeared to improve reproductive capacity. Investigations to better adapt the FAMACHA© system to goats is, however, recommended. A flexible training framework was developed with the collaboration of the farmers, providing them with advice on goat health and management. This ‘hands-on’ approach encompassed regular meetings geared to the farmers’ current expertise and exploited the on-farm experimentation as a training vehicle. The process nurtured local farmer ‘champions’, strengthened the extension skills of researchers and technicians and incorporated the development of a Goatkeepers’ animal health care manual. Indications are that the use of such an approach has considerable potential for the development of goat farming. Moreover this process, which is relatively novel for South Africa, is equally applicable to other similar agro-ecological zones. Access to veterinary and agricultural inputs in areas where communal grazing is practised could be vastly improved and a case is made for universities, researchers, extensionists and farmers to collaborate to encourage the long-term sustainable development of these communities. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2007.

Analyzing organic farming training in the curriculum of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg.Polepole, John Sanzimwami. January 2010 (has links)
The study was conducted in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, in the town of Pietermaritzburg, at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The aim of the research was to analyse to what extent organic farming is part of the curriculum at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture. The objectives of the study consisted of determining what is currently offered in terms of organic farming or sustainable agriculture; identify what the perceptions of students and lecturers are about organic farming; and identify the challenges faced by academics and stakeholders in organic farming.
The research method used to achieve the objectives was qualitative; it was done through interviews, site visits and observations. The data analysis used Microsoft Excel and SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for interpretation and coding. This process was based on the data analysis spiral, as described by Creswell (1998) cited in Leedy and Ormrod (2005).
The research found that in the UKZN current curriculum there is a presence of modules dealing with organic farming to a small extent. The perceptions of academic staff concerning organic farming were related to sustainability, environmental protection, use of alternative methods for food production, human health protection and knowledge for future generations. Organic farming was regarded as a crucial approach on different levels, including food security, environment, economy and market.
The challenges in organic farming field are more related to costs involved in production, lack of interest or awareness, yield production (very poor and not competitive); limited career opportunities; lack of expertise in the organic domain, lack of government support and intense competition with chemical companies.
The research recommends an enhancement of organic farming training in the curriculum at UKZN/PMB; involvement of students in developing the curriculum; government support for organic agriculture; more research exploring the merits and disadvantages of organic farming; assessment of farmers’ knowledge and skills in marketing; initiation of partnerships between organic farmers, processors, retailers; and government, to study a range of issues related to organic farming. / Thesis (M.Agric.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2010.

Coastal Environmental Policies and Water: Environmental Values in Ghana and SenegalLoftus, Molly R 01 January 2015 (has links)
This thesis provides a comparative analysis of the environmental values present in Ghana’s and Senegal’s coastal regions, and the implications that those have for the surrounding environment. The countries approaches to urban farming, mining and oil and gas extraction, fishing, marine debris and municipal waste management are assessed in order to reach a greater understanding of these environmental issues. In undertaking this thesis, I attempted to draw a correlation between the handling of these issues and how people perceive their environment. Through the comparison of environmental degradation and the level of effort to achieve a more sustainable developmental framework in both countries, I draw examples from successes in Senegal’s coastal management framework to recommend appropriate environmental policy for the Greater Accra Region.
