An assessment of the appropriateness of agricultural extension education in South Africa.

Worth, Steven Hugh. January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is about agricultural extension education. The context is agricultural extension in South Africa. It addresses the following questions: To what extent does current agricultural extension education in South Africa adequately reflect the current and changing educational and developmental imperatives? To what extent does it adequately equip extension officers and other agricultural development practitioners to deliver relevant support to farmers and farming communities? In short, how relevant is the training received by South African Agricultural Extension practitioners? The South African government has made significant changes in the policy environment governing agriculture. While the majority of the policy changes fall outside the scope of this research, it can be safely argued, as noted in the current Strategy for South African Agriculture, that the changes are fundamental. The changes redirect agriculture to the majority population which has hitherto been marginalised and generally denied meaningful access to the agricultural sector of the South African economy. To implement these changes, the agricultural sector will need appropriate skills – skills which, it is submitted – are largely lacking within the agricultural extension service and, more relevantly to this study, in Agricultural Extension curricula. In addition to the foregoing, assumptions about farmers and their roles in technology and information creation and consumption, assumptions about the roles of tertiary institutions in the triad of teaching, extension and research and indeed about the triad itself need to be challenged. A system of education which has its origins in the 1800s (before even the industrial revolution, much less the digital revolution) needs, per force, to be interrogated regularly to ensure that it delivers according to the demands of the exigencies of the time. Similarly, assumptions about the aim of development and in particular agricultural development have been questioned in many parts of the world. And yet it is submitted that in South Africa, the basic extension methodologies have not changed in any fundamental way; rather they have adopted some of the outer trappings of new approaches, without assessing the fundamentals of the core extension approach. It is believed that extension is in need of a serious review and that it is timely to do so. Recent research in Africa and elsewhere in the world indicates that extension needs be reconstructed on a different set of operational objectives led by a different vision. The extension strategy herein presented is built around a vision which places the focus on the farmer (and other land users) in the context not of technology, but of creating prosperity. The vision implies that the purpose of agricultural extension is to facilitate the establishment of self-reliant farmers who are contributing to widespread prosperity. The dual outcomes of self-reliant farmers and widespread prosperity are meant to be realised through a new set of =rules of engagement‘. Prosperity is derived out of farmers working together, sharing information, and learning together. Self-reliant farmers are an outcome of a learning partnership between farmers and extension practitioners. This study was conducted in a series of stages. The first thrust examined the nature of Agricultural Extension and the assumptions on which it is predicated. The result of this interrogation was to propose a new concept for Agricultural Extension – Agriflection – which is a learning-based concept aimed at improving the sustainability of the livelihoods of farmers through iterative development processes fostered through a learning agenda that is facilitated by an appropriately trained Agricultural Extension practitioner. To realise such a vision, it is essential that the mission of the extension service be recast to reflect the dynamics of the implications of the vision. The key elements of the mission are, therefore, client-responsiveness and partnerships. The power to realise the vision rests in three critical aspects. First is the capacity of the extension service to engage with its clients as genuine partners in a shared learning agenda. The second is the capacity of the extension service to engage with the many other agencies and organisations which supply goods and services to farmers and land users. The third is ensuring that engagements with farmers support sustainable development, that is, that production of food, fibre and fuel is socially just, economically sustainable and environmentally sustainable. This new vision and mission lay the foundation for a fundamental shift in the way agricultural extension is positioned, resourced, implemented and evaluated. The strategic goals, principles and values presented in this strategy are built on this foundation, and they, in turn, create the framework for constructing the operational plans of the extension service as well as for management and measurement of the service. The second thrust of the study was to filter the Agriflection concept through South African educational and agricultural policy. Given that the agricultural frontier is subject to change in focus and priorities, it was reasoned that the training and education of would-be extension practitioners needs to be able to respond to changes in methods and in the field. The National Government has adopted the outcomes-based model as the general structure for curriculum development. Further sustainable development/livelihoods has been adopted as the general framework for development. Outcomes-based education and sustainable development/livelihoods provide a framework for studying and developing curricula. A tool that enables curriculum analysis and development which allows for adjustment to changing imperatives while maintaining integrity in terms of education and development, would be valuable for tertiary institutions training extension officers. The result of this second thrust was the development of curriculum markers that encapsulated what non-technical knowledge and skills (i.e. Agricultural Extension knowledge and skills) were needed to be able to deliver on the imperatives of the transformation agenda of current agricultural policy. Thirty-four markers were identified. The third thrust of the study was to create a credible method to evaluate Agricultural Extension curricula and to capture and analyse data. A detailed review of methods and approaches was made resulting in fashioning the Theory-led Instructional-Design Curriculum Evaluation (TICE) method. One of the primary facets of this six-process method is questioning of the assumptions on which the discipline of Agricultural Extension is based. Such a questioning would lead to a new theory to govern the evaluation of curriculum. Ancillary to the TICE method were the methods of data collection and analysis. The study consolidated these in presence and efficacy factors. These factors measured the presence of the 34 markers in Agricultural Extension curricula and the extent to which they were addressed, if present. The fourth thrust of the study was the detailed evaluation of curricula of qualifications most commonly held by public sector Agricultural Extension practitioners. The study examined the curricula of agricultural diplomas, of three- and four-year agricultural degrees and of one-year postgraduate qualifications offered by Colleges of Agriculture and selected Universities and Universities of Technology. The fifth thrust was to conduct corroborative investigations in the public sector. This was done by surveying Agricultural Extension practitioners asking them to evaluate the extent to which they believed they have knowledge and/or skill represented by the 34 curricula markers. In addition, a brief analysis was made of Agricultural Extension practitioner job descriptions used in the public sector. This was done to determine what knowledge and skills were expected of Agricultural Extension practitioners and comparing this to the 34 markers. The study revealed that there is very limited Agricultural Extension training offered in the curricula of qualifications held by the majority of public sector Agricultural Extension practitioners. Further, using the 34 markers as the touchstone, it was determined that the current curricula do not adequately equip public sector Agricultural Extension practitioners to deliver on the agenda of current South African agricultural policy. Without extensive revision of curricula in terms of both the quantity and content of extension training, the South African public sector Agricultural Extension service will not be able to realise the intended transformation of agriculture. Its key operatives will not have the knowledge and skills needed to do so. This is a unique study. No study of its kind has ever been conducted in South Africa. Numerous studies have been conducted into the training needs of Agricultural Extension practitioners. None have gone to the extent of questioning the assumptions on which Agricultural Extension is based. None have made a critical examination of curricula in the light of current educational and agricultural policy. This study found that there is an urgent need for serious attention to be given the purpose, scope, outcomes of Agricultural Extension higher education in South Africa to ensure that it can contribute to the positive and sustainable transformation of agriculture. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2008.

Agricultural Educators’ Personal Characteristics and Self-Efficacy Beliefs Regarding STEM Education

Hendrix, Rachel 09 August 2019 (has links)
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is becoming an integral part of modern agricultural education. If the integration of STEM into agricultural education is to succeed, it is vital that educators feel confident in their ability to teach such material. This study examines Tennessee and Mississippi agricultural educators’ personal teaching efficacy and outcome expectancy levels towards STEM subjects and identifies factors that may play a role in the development of STEM teaching efficacy. Analysis indicated that educators felt most confident in their ability to teach science, followed by technology, mathematics and then engineering. Factors that influenced STEM personal teaching efficacy included the number of postsecondary STEM courses taken, gender, and CASE course completion. Regarding outcome expectancy, teachers felt similarly across the four STEM fields. The one factor found to influence STEM outcome expectancy included the number of postsecondary STEM courses taken. Recommendations for future research include exploring agricultural educators’ perceptions of engineering and its place in the agriculture industry, recognizing how engineering is taught at both the secondary and postsecondary level, understanding the experience of minorities in STEM, and identifying ways in which agricultural educators use technology in their classrooms. Recommendations for practice include offering preservice agricultural educators more engineering and technology courses, specifically highlighting how STEM concepts are used in the modern agricultural industry, and improving agricultural educator outcome expectancy levels.

PLANTING SEEDS OF BELONGING: A CASE STUDY

Ken Fuelling (19199932) 24 July 2024 (has links)

At present, formal and non-formal agricultural spaces, including agricultural education, do not provide opportunities for individuals from historically and contemporarily marginalized communities to develop a strong sense of belonging. An increase in sense of belonging may increase retention for all individuals interacting with agricultural programs and more effectively disseminate tools and resources to a wider audience, which can help solve agricultural issues such as the hunger crisis. The Garden Sun Institute (GSI) is a non-formal agricultural education program that is changing this narrative, with many staff and students of marginalized populations expressing a deep sense of belonging not only with others at GSI but also feeling a sense of belonging in the field of agriculture. The purpose of this case study was to explore whether there is a sense of belonging at this location and to determine what factors may contribute to it. The questions guiding this study are: 1) How do youth describe a sense of belonging at GSI? 2) How does GSI engage with youth, family, and staff? and 3) How do those engaging with GSI describe a sense of belonging within agriculture broadly? Results from this study showed that utilizing elements of the Critical Pedagogy of Agriculture along with practices such as trauma-informed pedagogy, student-led and student-centered learning, and gentle parenting have led to this program developing a culture of belonging. Future research recommendations include determining accountability strategies and investigating the impacts of the incorporation of strategies into formal education programs.

Travail enseignant et formation : la culture des enseignants des spécialités agricoles au Chili / Trabajo docente y formación : la cultura de los profesores de especialidades agropecuarias en Chile / Teachers’ work and training : the culture of teachers in vocational agricultural education in Chile

Nunez Moscoso, Javier 19 December 2013 (has links)
This research has the dual purpose of analyzing the work of teachers in vocational agricultural education in Chile (especiallytheir professional problems) and making proposals for their training. For this, it mobilizes an abduction procedure (Peirce, 1965) based on an epistemology of discovery extended by an hermeneutic approach that gets hypotheses to emerge later on.Teachers’ work is viewed as a system of professional practices (Marcel , 2004) and studied from the points of view of activity, status and experience (Tardif & Lessard, 1999). This framework structures a methodological set of tools that enhances the production of a consistent and varied empirical corpus. The interpretation of these elements allows to uncover the symbolic nature of teachers' work and support the general assumption of a cultural side to this work. This hypothesis comes in two parts. First teachers have a role as cultural mediators between the agricultural professional world and the school system and, secondly, that professional difficulty is normalized in daily work. One can therefore describe a "cultural mediation area" for teachers in agriculture. To get these contributions to benefit training, an engineering approach to training is deployed, which "translates" elements of the "cultural mediation area" into terms of professional knowledge. This knowledge is integrated into a proposal of training scenarios, not as a prescription, but as an assistance to policy decision-making.

Campus Salinas might understand and fixed knowledge. Aiming to verify how interdisciplinarity contributes to the development of students? learning through their own construction of knowledge due to their inclusion in the research project for developing the product ?pasteurized cane juice?. To evaluate the learning of each student individually, we used the method of the attitude constructing a questionnaire composed of 25 statements regarding the theoretical and practical knowledge on the production of pasteurized sugarcane juice. The questionnaire was administered to students at four different times: the first time (TI), considered as time zero, where the group of students responded to questionnaires when the teacher had not offered any information about the project and its related disciplines, the second time (TII), the students answered after watching an interdisciplinary exhibition project, the third time (TIII), responded after the production of juice, and the fourth and final time (TIV), where the group responded to questionnaires after the completion of analysis. Through this assessment it was revealed that the development of students? learning was significant and growing. They were also evaluated in relation to commitment to the proposed activities through: image registration, self-assessment of learning, development flowchart, and practice in the production of the juice and their laboratory tests. This other form of assessment showed differently the growth of these students during the research. They proved to be encouraged to work with the project because they could participate in activities that were not included in their daily profession. Through self-assessments, they show the desire to have an education focused on issues related to their reality, based on a curriculum in the various areas of knowledge can act in an integrated manner. And by working with flowchart, we could clearly see the development in relation to the production process of the cane juice. The work was very important in guiding the teacher to work other teaching methods both in the classroom, field or laboratory to stimulate the interest of the student of a pedagogical discipline. Students learn better and showed more satisfaction when they felt part of the learning process and not just passively receiving knowledge.

(IFPA-CRMB) of the Federal Institute of Science and Technology of the State of Par? (IFPA) offers the Technical Course in Agropecu?ria Integrated to High School, based on the pedagogy of alternation, via generator theme. The students of this course are inserted in a regional context of agrarian conflicts and the evident incentive to livestock as a model of production, having as consequence the deforestation of Areas of Permanent Preservation (APP). This context is expressed in the significant speeches that subsidized the theme of this course, for example: (I hope that this course can empower me for the job market.) I believe that students will solve the lack of infrastructure, mechanization and technical assistance That we have in the area). Due to the need for a field education that is contextualized and compatible with the realities of the field, there is a need to develop teaching practices that value students' research, reasoning and way of life. In this way, this research aimed to develop, apply and evaluate the use of schematic maps (sketches) as pedagogical method, to understand the situation and relevance of protected territorial spaces defined in Law 12.651, particularly APP, within the perspective of Field Education and pedagogic alternation, via the generating theme. These procedures were carried out with a view to stimulating the production of theoretical and practical knowledge for a more concrete productive planning of the rural properties. Seventy students participated in this study, divided into two groups, participants and non-participants. The methodology used was action research, applying and evaluating the use of sketches as a teaching tool. The results show that, through the use of the sketches, the students visualized more clearly the main forms of use and occupation of the spaces of family property, identified the APP areas, applied knowledge of ecological processes and environmental legislation to the different situations.

THE INFLUENCE OF TRANSFORMATIONAL MIDDLE LEADERS ON WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Tanner, Timothy D. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Work-life balance is a key indicator of employee satisfaction, retention, and social health as well as organizational creativity and productivity. These dual benefits for employee and employer have generated interest in promoting work-life balance. Supervisors who operate from a transformational leadership framework have been linked to greater work-life balance among employees (Lamm, 2011; (Kutilek, Conklin, & Gunderson, 2002). The role of a supportive organizational culture is also central (Lewis, 2001). In this study, Cooperative Extension Service agents (N = 1390) participated in a nationwide survey exploring the relationship between rated levels of transformational leadership among district directors, work-life balance, and work-life balance organizational culture. The results from confirmatory factor analyses indicate these three separate dimensions. The findings from the structural equation model demonstrate that all paths, except transformational leadership to personal life interference with work, are statistically significant. Work-life balance organizational culture is the largest contributor to the total effect of these associations. This study confirms that the supervisor and organizational culture join together to forge an important alliance of support for work-life balance among subordinates. Findings reveal the need for additional study of specific ways leaders foster positive work-life balance organizational culture.
