Utvecklande ledarskap på division : En studie av flygvapnets ledarstilar / Developmental Leadership at Squadrons : An Investigation of the Swedish Air Force Leadership StylesDahlqvist, Eric January 2010 (has links)

/
A developmental leadership is considered to affect the motivation and performance in a positivedirection. Since 2003, the Armed Forces have been using Gerry Larsson’s theory of the developing leadership as a basis for leadership within the organization. The theory is considered to be viable both in military contexts as in civil organizations. The purpose of this paper is to investigate to what extent the model is applied by the Air Force squadrons, using the Developmental Leadership theory. Parts of the Developing Leadership Questionnaire were used to identify the average leadership style. The 56 persons responding to the questionnaire did so based on how they perceive the leaders within their squadron. The results show that the average leader is acting through action and by being an exemplary model. The leader makes important decisions, stands accountable for them and is prepared to defend them. He/she is perceived as being fairly good at providing support to colleagues in situations where supportis needed. However, the leader is perceived as being less able to confront colleagues when their behavior or performance does not comply with the operational goals. The need for confrontation can be provoked by the division’s group-social issues or by the individual’s incorrect actions or bad performance.

Ansvars- och säkerhetskultur i Flygvapnet / Responsibility and safety culture in the Swedish Air ForceBoudrie, Klas January 2010 (has links)
Flight operations are by nature challenging, complex and full of risks. With this comes large responsibility. The purpose of this study is to create a deeper understanding of responsibility and safety culture of the Swedish Air Force. For the issue to be analysed the author sets the following questions: What is the responsibility and safety culture like in the Swedish Air Force? What is manifested in the written rules and policies? How is it maintained and reproduced by the members? The theoretical approach in this paper is the institutional theory and a socio-cultural perspective. The empirical part consists of interviews, the air operation manual and the training syllabus for basic flying training. To answer the questions a qualitative method is used and the empirical part is analysed using the theoretical perspective. The study shows that responsibility and safety culture in the Swedish Air Force is well rooted. Responsibility culture is based on well-developed formal regulations, strong traditions formed during long time and influential education and pedagogy. An important part of the responsibility culture is how to take care of experiences through a system of disruption notifications. This is based on transparency which is why sanctions do not appear. The attributes of the members are: self-esteem, high motivation, seriousness and a well-developed ethics.

Experiences from international LIVEX within the Swedish Air Force : how are they appreciated and how do they affect business at the Air Force’s fighter squadrons – and how big difference is there in the perception of relevant knowledge?Dahlberg, Andreas January 2009 (has links)
This essay examines the speech about the experiences from international LIVEX – how they are appreciated and affect business and the building of knowledge. The study compares opinions – about what knowledge and which experience is important to be in possession of as a fighter pilot to be able to solve tasks in an international context – between those with and those without own experience from international LIVEX. The aim is to enable and to entice to reflection over which kind of practice the discourses surrounding international LIVEX leads to within the Swedish Air Force’s fighter squadrons. Discourse analysis is used as a method to examine the speech. The analysis is done through a socialconstructivistical perspective. To compare opinions about which knowledge is perceived as important statistical calculations is being done from a survey answered by half of the Swedish Air Force’s fighter pilots. The result is being analysed with the same theoretical perspective as in the discourse analysis. The result of the comparison shows a statistical significant difference in opinions in 4 of 71 measured knowledge’s, expediencies and skills. The discourse analysis shows that the experiences are perceived as very important for the building of knowledge within the Swedish Air Force. So important that co-workers after participation in LIVEX and after flying only a few sorties are allowed to shape and influence training instructions, tactical instructions and aircraft development.

Psychological Skills of Canadian Military PilotsHohmann, Maya Danielle 15 June 2011 (has links)
For decades, elite athletes have used mental skills training to enhance their performance. The effectiveness of these skills and strategies have been measured, documented and supported in research (e.g., Feltz & Landers, 1983; Vealey, 1994). As the remarkable benefits of mental skills continue to reach an ever-growing community of performers, it is surprising that many military organizations, known for their high standards for performance and little tolerance for error, have yet to take full advantage of this type of training. Canada’s Air Force (CAF), home to a world-renowned pilot training program, now finds itself seeking additional tools to empower pilots to achieve consistent, high quality performance under demanding, high stress conditions.
The purpose of this research was to explore the psychological skills used by elite Canadian military pilots to perform successfully in this highly demanding occupation. Sixteen in-depth interviews were conducted with elite Canadian pilots at a CAF base in Saskatchewan. Results indicated that pilots utilized all seven elements of Orlick’s (2008) Wheel of Excellence over three phases of flight: pre-flight preparation, mission execution, and post-flight debriefs. Pilots also drew on elements of the Wheel of Excellence during deployments to combat zones. Effective stress management played an especially important role in this context. Recommendations for future research include mental skills usage and preparation specific to deployment contexts as well as the implementation of a specific, relevant mental skills training program within the existing CAF pilot training program

An identification of the mission of the Community College of the Air Force and an assessment of the extent to which the mission has been fulfilledParnell, Dale, 1928- 10 June 1991 (has links)
The Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) was
created in 1972 by the Air Force to serve Air Force
enlisted personnel with educational opportunity. No
study exists identifying and assessing the mission of
this college. Various mission sources iterate the
different goals of CCAF. These sources and other
indicators are used to identify and assess fulfillment of
the CCAF mission. The purpose of this study is to
clearly identify the CCAF mission and determine to what
extent the mission has been fulfilled.
The literature review presents background on
education in America and the U.S. military and the
American community college movement plus a summary of the
works on CCAF to set the stage for the mission
identification and assessment process.
The research questions were what is the mission of
the Community College of the Air Force and to what extent
has the mission been fulfilled? Case study methodology
was used to both identify and assess the mission.
Study findings indicate the mission needs further
clarification, but by the measures used the various
missions identified have been fulfilled. The study
concluded that enlisted members of the United States Air
Force are improving their competence through the
associate degree opportunity, that CCAF is recognized by
peer institutions, and that this innovative approach to
postsecondary education offers thousands of American
service members educational opportunity.
Questions still unanswered include how can this
approach be expanded to other branches of the military
services and is another accreditation process appropriate
for this special type of institution? / Graduation date: 1992
