Sexual blinging of women : Alice Walker's african character tashi and issue of female genital cutting

Brum, Gabriela Eltz January 2005 (has links)
The Temple of my Familiar (1989). / This thesis provides a reading of the different forms of representation that can be attributed to the character Tashi, the protagonist of the novel Possessing the Secret of Joy (1992), written by the African American writer Alice Walker. Before this work Tashi had already appeared in two previous novels by Walker, first, in The Color Purple (1982) and then, as a mention, in The Temple of My Familiar (1989). With Tashi, the author introduces the issue of female circumcision, a ritual Tashi submits herself to at the beginning of her adult life. The focus of observation lies in the ways in which the author’s anger is transformed into a means of creative representation. Walker uses her novel Possessing the Secret of Joy openly as a political instrument so that the expression “female mutilation” (term used by the author) receives ample attention from the media and critics in general. The aim of this investigation is to evaluate to what extent Walker’s social engagement contributes to the development of her work and to what extent it undermines it. For the analysis of the different issues related to “female genital cutting”, the term I use in this thesis, the works of feminist critics and writers such as Ellen Gruenbaum, Lightfoot-Klein, Nancy Hartsock, Linda Nicholson, Efrat Tseëlon and the Egyptian writer and doctor Nawal El Saadawi will be consulted. I hope that this thesis can contribute as an observation about Alice Walker’s use of her social engagement in the creation of her fictional world.

Rocha, Angélica Pinho Martins 28 August 2012 (has links)
This study is an investigation related to the search of social reason and objective of the Elementary School Professora Alice Paes, in Uberlândia- Minas Gerais, from 1965 to1971. Limiting the study to the initial years was due to its creation by the Decree 8176 from February 22, 1965, and ended in 1971, when the Elementary School, with that conception, was extinguished. The specific objectives of the study were: to indentify the motivation for building an elementary school in a peri-urban of the city; to delineate the social-economic profile of the public served by the school at that time; to analyze the teaching practices at the school. The sources analyzed were inserted in several portfolios, with images portraying the opening ceremony of the Elementary School Professora Alice Paes and the activities done by the students, donated notebooks, the Daily Attendance Book Record, and the Monthly Activities Summary of 1971, the Manual of the Elementary School Teacher, Cumulative School Record (documents collected at the referred school). The social reason for the Elementary School Professora Alice Paes was identified by analyzing the social-economic origin of the alumni and the schooling and Professional trajectory of each one of them using a structured interview. All subjects interviewed were from the popular layer, with no economic capital. One group of those interviewed found reason for that school, since it provided the necessary means for female students to have the aspired social ascension, by embodying the cultural capital transmitted by the family nucleus and by the educational institution, it was possible to mobilize this capital, acquiring the social capital and possessing a new habitus, breaking up with the initial social economic origin. In contrast, for another alumni group, the school had no reason, for it did not promote the acquisition of these capitals, resulting in that they remained in the original social group. The social objective of the Elementary School Professora Alice Paes, was studied by analyzing the curriculum of the school, where the primary objective of this institution was to form the civil subject, willing and able to serve the religion, the country and the work. However, the school was not able to transmit the same idea of civility, respect, and discipline to all students, since each subject represented a single identity; thus, for each student there should be a type of teaching to be applied in order to organize the classes in homogeneous parameters, which is the conclusion of this study. O objetivo social do grupo escolar Professora Alice Paes era formar o sujeito cívico, disposto e apto a servir a religião, a pátria e o trabalho.

Préparation à l'étude du plasma de quarks et de gluons dans ALICE : le détecteur V0 et les résonances de masses dans le spectromètre à muons / Preparation of the study of the quark-gluon plasma in ALICE : the V0 detector and the low masses resonances in the muon spectrometer

Nendaz, Fabien 22 September 2009 (has links)
The ALICE experiment at LHC will study from 2010 the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), phase of the matter in which quarks and gluons are deconfined. The work presented here was done within the ALICE collaboration, for preparing the analysis of the incoming experimental data. Besides a theoretical approach of the QGP and of the chiral symmetry, we develop three experimental aspects: the V0 sub-detector, the study of the low mass mesons and the deconvolution. First, we detail the measures of luminosity and multiplicity that can be done with the V0. We then develop the study of the dimuons in the muon spectometer. We concentrate on the low masses mesons: the rho, the omega and the phi. Finally, we present a method for improving the spectrometer data: the Richardson-Lucy deconvolution.

Carrollova "Alenka v říši divů": korpusově stylistická perspektiva / A corpus stylistic perspective on Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"

Hrdličková, Jana January 2015 (has links)
The goal of the present thesis is a corpus stylistic analysis of Alice in Wonderland (1865), and it presents the possibilities of using corpus methods in the study of literary texts. In the theoretical part, the thesis is concerned with an explanation of the words norm, foregrounding, deviance and prominence (Leech, 2008), which are key terms in stylistics. The text then focuses in detail on various concerns connected to keywords and clusters, which are investigated later on in the theoretical part. The relation of keywords to the reference corpus and aspects of the length and frequency of occurrence of clusters are analyzed. An important element in a corpus-based analysis is that it is supposed to decrease bias, as the researcher studies statistically based significant markers of the text. The next part of the thesis focuses on the position of Alice in Wonderland between other members of the children's literature of the Golden Age (Knowles & Malmkjaer, 1995), and the role of nonsense and non-observance of pragmatic principles of interaction in the text. The reference corpora are described and primary hypotheses stated. In the practical part, keywords are studied first. They are divided into part of speech categories and interpreted from the point of view of their role and mutual relations in the text....

A Woman's Territory: Female Protagonists in 21st Century Road Movie–Based Fairy Tale Films

Lackan, Ivana January 2016 (has links)
This paper closely examines fairy tale films with road movie components, in particular those films featuring female protagonists. The study’s objective is twofold: first, to further develop existing research on the road movie by exploring one of the lesser known constituents of this broad genre and, second, to address gaps in scholarly literature on road movies when it comes to themes in female-led trips and the characterization of travelling females. Through a detailed analysis of the journeys of female characters in recent voyage-oriented fairy tale films—Peter Pan (P.J. Hogan, 2003), Alice in Wonderland (Tim Burton, 2010) and Tangled (Byron Howard and Nathan Greno, 2010)—the investigation shows that these new heroines significantly differ from those of old. Their travels are portrayed as being less difficult, and the traits that they exhibit while on the road, namely fearlessness, rationality and an undying optimism, are rather favourable when compared to those exhibited by former road heroines. Although these protagonists still face characters who wish to impede their movement away from a domestic setting, it is demonstrated that the protagonists are ultimately successful in not only acquiring power in the surroundings that they find themselves in, but also in carrying over their goals and dreams to their own worlds upon their return, privileges that most former road heroines did not have. Ultimately, the study shows that females can be as efficient travellers as males, and in some cases are portrayed as even more competent than their male counterparts.

Genesis and zoning of silver-gold veins in the Beaverdell area, South-Central British Columbia

Watson, Patricia Helen Wanless January 1981 (has links)
The Beaverdell silver, gold, lead, zinc, vein camp is located approximately 88 km south of Kelowna, in south-central British Columbia at 49.43° north latitude and 119.06° west longtitude. The camp has been a silver producer since the turn of the century and some gold was produced in the early part of the century. This thesis examines the deposits in the regional area and examines, in detail, zoning in the Lass vein system on Wallace Mountain, and represents the first comprehensive study of zoning and genesis of the veins. Galena-lead isotopes are examined within the regional setting of the deposits. Fluid inclusion, sulphur isotope, mineralographic and major and minor element zonation studies yield definitive information about the genesis of the deposits. Granodiorite of the Westkettle batholith, probably Jurassic, underlies much of the area and has been Intruded by stocks of Tertiary quartz monzonite, such as the Beaverdell stock. Remnants of pendants and/or screens of Wallace Formation metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks, believed to be Permian, are contained in the granodiorite. Silver mineralization occurs in the Beaverdell mines on Wallace Mountain mainly within the West-kettle batholith. Numerous showing and old workings of silver and/or gold mineralization are found throughout the surrounding region. The gold-bearing veins at Carmi contain a different mineral assemblage than the silver-bearing veins on Wallace Mountain. Galena-lead analyses of samples collected throughout the region fall into two distinct clusters on the ²º⁶Pb/ ²º⁴Pb versus ²⁰⁷Pb/ ²⁰⁴Pb and ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁴Pb versus ²⁰⁸Pb/²⁰⁴Pb diagrams. The first group is represented by the Carmi gold veins and the second by the Beaverdell silver veins. Models for the generation of lead in these deposits used Permian (0.27 Ga), Jurassic (0.15 Ga) or Tertiary (0.05 Ga) ages of mineralization on the basis of geological and K-Ar data. The model that is believed to be the best approximation of the system that formed these deposits assumes that the two groups of deposits formed at different times, under markedly different geological conditions. The parameters of this model indicate that: 1. the Carmi-type, gold-bearing vein mineralization is probably Jurassic and formed as a result of the intrusion of the Westkettle batholith, with the metamorphosed Wallace Formation as the probable lead source; 2. the Beaverdell-type, Silver-bearing vein mineralization is probably Tertiary and can be linked genetically to intrusions of that age, such as the Beaverdell stock; 3. ore fluid flow direction for the solutions that formed the Beaverdell-type mineralization was outward through the Westkettle batholith, away from the Beaverdell stock. Within the Lass vein system on Wallace Mountain, a distinctive, depth related, east-west zonation pattern in Au, Ag, Pb and Zn can be defined. Many of the other 11 elements analysed (Cu, Fe, Mn, Cd, Ca, Mg, Co, Ni, Hg, As, Sb) also show this pattern. Two zones are defined. The deeper portions of the orebody (at the east end of the vein system) contain high gold values, low silver values, and moderate to high zinc and lead values. High silver values, accompanied by moderate lead and zinc values, are found at a higher elevation in the system, in the western part of the vein system. Veins in the lower section have a greater average thickness than those in the western, upper section, and generally contain less gangue material. Fluid inclusions in sphalerite and quartz samples from the Lass vein system can be divided into three groups based on their homogenization temperatures. These are: Group 1: primary inclusion (with and without CO²), formed between 260°C and 310°C, from solutions with an average of 13 equivalent weight percent NaCl; Group 2: pseudosecondary inclusions formed between 230°C and 260°C, with salinities from 0.6 to 14 equivalent weight percent NaCl; Group 3: pseudosecondary and secondary inclusions formed between 180°C and 220°C, from solutions containing 0.4 to 14 equivalent weight percent NaCl. Arithmetic means of salinities for pseudosecondary, and secondary inclusions are, respectively, 8 and 6 equivalent weight percent NaCl. Sulphur isotope thermometers calculated for sphalerite-galena pairs (268°C to 320°C) are in close agreement with temperatures of homogenization of primary fluid inclusions. Seven stages of mineral paragensis can be recognized in the Lass vein system. Therfirst three stages (pyrite, arsenopyrite and dark sphalerite) are associated with the higher temperature, higher salinity, CO₂-bearing, primary inclusions. Pseudosecondary and secondary inclusions appear to be related to stages 4 to 6, which consist of galena, paler sphalerite, silver minerals and late quartz. Estimated depths of formation, based on a system under hydrostatic pressure, fall into two groupings. The minimum estimated depths of formation for primary, group 1 inclusions average 720 m, while depths calculated for groups 2 and 3 overlap in range, with-averages of 370 m and 175 m. The model-developed to explain the formation of this orebody accounts for the major and minor element zonation in the vein, the decreasing temperature, salinity and pressure (depth), and the loss of CO2 from the ore-forming fluid. The model explains two spatially distinct areas of mineralization represented by: 1. a zone of high temperature, high salinity, .arid" moderate pressure below a throttling point; and 2. a lower temperature, low salinity area caused by ground water mixing on the lower pressure side of the throttling point. CO₂ is present in the system below the throttling point, but is not found in any inclusions in Groups 2 and 3, on the lower temperature side of the throttling point. The association of CO₂ with gold deposition, suggests that gold would be expected in those areas where CO₂ is present in some of the inclusions. The definition of these two zones is critical for exploration. High silver values would not be expected to reappear further at depth to the east of the present workings, because this type of mineralization would only occur above the throttle point. Gold mineralization can be expected to continue for some time at depth if this model holds true. The abrupt change from the gold to the silver zone represents the throttle point in this model, and is highly visible in the major and minor element distribution patterns for the Lass vein system. Several different analytical procedures have been shown to differentiate between the two types of vein mineralization in the Beaverdell area. The use of these methods for exploration and development would allow the determination of key parameters concerning mineralization prior to extensive development of a showing or property. The level within the hydrothermal system, and therefore the type of ore expected can be determined by fluid inclusion studies for the younger, Tertiary veins. The age of vein mineralization, and therefore, the type of mineralization, also can be predicted by the use of galena-lead isotope ratios. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Graduate
