Analyzing and Designing an Off-Grid Commercial Library Building at Najran University in the Hot Arid Climate of Najran, Saudi Arabia

Almazam, Khaled Ali, Almazam, Khaled Ali January 2017 (has links)
This master's thesis analyzes and redesigns the current performance design of the Main Library in Najran University campus, Najran, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) to achieve a completely energy independent and off-grid building. The research demonstrates the energy development in KSA, investigates and analyzes the project, and studies the energy systems. Climate data for Najran city was generated and analyzed in Climate Consultant 6.0. The research examines case studies from hot-arid climates that are responsive climatically. In addition, the energy generation and storage systems are calculated and specified to the building and its site; Quick Energy Simulation Tool (eQUEST) was used to analyze and simulate the energy use in the existing building. Furthermore, Revit software was utilized to develop the project design and simulate daylight intensity for indoor and outdoor spaces. Additionally, Cool Vent simulated the natural ventilation for the building for the low-energy performance case and the high-energy performance case, and direct passive evaporative cool towers were simulated in COOLT software. Appropriate building envelopes, passive cooling strategies, and native landscapes are applied to the off-grid case. Solar power generation outcomes, wind turbines output, batteries size are optimized in HOMER energy simulation software; thus, this off-grid building generates electricity more than its use, then, stores the extra energy in batteries banks. Through this research energy independency was accomplished with a reduction in total energy consumption by 64%, and human thermal comfort levels were attained in the proposed design.

Saturday Nights Alone

Roberts, Daniel C. 06 July 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This novel blends first-person narrative prose with conventions of screenwriting to create a voice consistent with its main character, Rick Morgan, who's trying to escape his life as a real estate agent by becoming a screenwriter. As Rick struggles to write a new screenplay he finds it difficult to divorce his creative mind from the troubles of his personal life. As a result his preoccupations with destroying his boss and taking back the girl the boss stole from him, work their way into Rick's new project. The motif of art imitating life imitating art forces Rick to question long held beliefs on business, women, and the creative process as he realizes that life is not like the movies even though the movies are often like life.

Teamarbete vid vård i hemmet, ur ett sjuksköterskeperspektiv / Teamwork in care at home, from a nursing perspective

Thorsén, Anna-Karin, Östlund, Rebecka January 2023 (has links)
Background: Because we are living longer today, the need for healthcare is increasing. Therefore, the need for care at home also increases, which can be a challenge for the nurse to provide. Teamwork means that those involved in the patients’ care use their competencies to complement each other. Nurses are responsible for care, the leadership role includes sharing knowledge, supervising, and giving colleagues feedback. Aim: The aim was to examine nurses’ experiences of teamwork in care at home. Method: This qualitative based literary study included ten articles, searched, and selected from the databases Cinahl and Pubmed. They were analysed using Friberg’s (2017) five steps model. Results: Lack of communication was an obstacle for cooperation, such as language difficulties, insufficient communication of information between colleagues and problems finding information related to different record systems. Hierarchy, mistrust of each other’s competence and uncertainty about who had the overall responsibility for the patient were other difficulties. Having a pleasant tone while talking, being humble and listening to each other was important. If the doctor was available was seen as positive as well as knowing each other in the team since before. Working alone was challenging and in complex situations nurses were happy to collaborate in pairs. It was desirable to have group reflections and supervision mentoring.  Conclusion: The conclusion was that communication and attitudes towards each other are essential for cooperation. Group reflections and tutoring guidance can increase cohesion and team strength.

[en] REFLECTIONS ON THE (IN)CAPACITY TO BE ALONE / [pt] REFLEXÕES SOBRE A (IN)CAPACIDADE DE ESTAR SÓ

JOANA MARCOS CHISSINI 25 April 2022 (has links)
[en] The present work aims to investigate the basis of an individual s capacity to be alone and to apprehend what would compromise the possibility of someone being, existing and constituting a unit, achieving emotional growth and autonomy. For this, a theoretical research was developed from the analytical conceptual method. The investigation was based mainly on the theory of the English psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott. In a first part, it was investigated the positive aspect of aloneness based on the Winnicottian conception of being alone as a capacity. In the second part, it was related the capacity to be alone with the Winnicottian potential space, starting from the reinterpretation and understanding of Thomas Ogden that in the capacity to be alone, the child becomes capable of generating a continent space in which he lives. Finally, in the third part of this research, it was contemplated the desert aspect of loneliness, seeking to understand possible difficulties in primitive emotional development that would make the experience of being alone unfeasible. It was investigated the primitive anxieties and the defensive processes involved in the beginnings of development, exploring the etiology of the Winnicottian false self in counterpoint to the baby s spontaneous gesture.

Understanding social connectedness of older adults who live alone

Prakash, Akanksha 27 May 2016 (has links)
Ample evidence underscores the deleterious effects of loneliness on health and mortality. Therefore, it is important that loneliness risks are identified across all ages and appropriate measures are devised to address those risks. Although almost a third of the US older adult population lives alone, there is limited research on the social connectedness (or its lack thereof) in this subset of older adults. This dissertation specifically focused on understanding loneliness (its extent, variance, and sources of variance) in older adults who live alone and do not use the Internet. The results indicate that the loneliness reported in this subset of older adults is greater than that found in general older adult samples. Social isolation (measured by social network variables) and emotional well-being emerged as significant predictors of loneliness in this group. Demographics, personality, and technology experience did not predict variance in loneliness beyond that predicted by social isolation and emotional well-being. To understand if Internet adoption can provide greater opportunities for connectedness, a qualitative study was also conducted. This study focused on the subjective experiences of living alone, relationships with friends, family, and groups in the context of living alone, and the role of technology in supporting connectedness needs. Loneliness was the most commonly reported challenge associated with living alone and was often described in terms of lack of companionship or someone to share one’s feelings with. The older adult Internet users perceived usefulness of Internet-based social media as a compensatory tool for communication, but valued in-person interactions more. Together these studies provided insights into the social connectedness of older adults who live alone. The findings advanced the understanding of the complexities of living alone in older age and helped identify directions to best address social connectedness needs while also supporting older adults’ desire to continue to age in the living arrangement of their choice. Finally, the gaps in research on older adults’ use of social media and its potential to support connectedness for an aging population were also addressed.

SELF-ORIENTING AND LOCATING UNIT

Briggs, James R., Youssef, Ahmed H. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1998 / Town & Country Resort Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California / Optical trackers are often used at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) and at other Department of Defense (DoD) ranges to collect video and trajectory data for real-time display and postflight processing. When optical trackers are used in remote areas, pointing data from radar is utilized to enable the trackers to initially acquire targets. To enable the trackers to use radar-pointing data, offsets to true north must first be known. This offset is taken into account given the current position of the optical tracker. During postflight processing, when determining the trajectory of the target, the offsets are also taken into account to produce an accurate trajectory solution. Current methods of determining offsets to true north are time consuming and involve a lot of guesswork. Typically, a map and a known landmark are used to determine the offsets to true north. Another method is to look for the North Star (Polaris) and input an estimated offset. This paper will describe an inexpensive, stand-alone system that utilizes the Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine these offsets. This device may be modified and integrated with other systems that may need to point accurately. For example, a gun barrel on a tank may need to point accurately to within a degree. This device may also be used to accurately position telemetry antennas.

Older people living alone (OPLA) - non-kin-carers' support towards the end of life: qualitative longitudinal study protocol

Pleschberger, Sabine, Reitinger, Elisabeth, Trukeschitz, Birgit, Wosko, Paulina January 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Background: A growing number of older people, mainly women, live in single households. They represent avulnerable group as staying at home may turn out challenging when care needs increase, particularly at the end oflife. Non-kin-carers can play an essential role in supporting individuals' preferences to stay at home. In research Little attention has been paid to non-kin-carers, such as friends and neighbors, yet. Thus, the Older People Living Alone (OPLA) study will evaluate whether non-kin support is robust enough to enable care dependent people to stay athome even at the end of life. This paper aims to introduce the research protocol. Methods: We plan to apply a qualitative longitudinal study to better understand how older people living aloneand their non-kin-carers manage to face the challenges with increased care needs towards the end-of-life. We willconduct serial interviews with the older persons living alone and their non-kin-carers. A total of 20-25 completedata sets and up to 200 personal interviews were planned. These will be complemented by regular telephonecontacts. All interviews will be analysed following the grounded theory approach and strategies for reconstructingcase trajectories, supported by MAXQDA software. In the course of the study, inter- and transdisciplinary workshopsshall assure quality and support knowledge transfer. Discussion: This study protocol aims to guide research in a field that is difficult to approach, with regard to itstopic, methodology and the interdisciplinary approach. As this study introduces longitudinal qualitative Research methodology in the field of home care in Austria, a deeper understanding of (end-of-life-) care trajectories will beenhanced, which is of major relevance for future care planning. With investment in additional reflexivity andcommunication procedures innovative results and robust knowledge are expected outcomes.

Microscale biomass generation for continuous power supply to remote customers

Loeser, Mathias January 2010 (has links)
Remotely located and sparsely populated areas often do not have access to an efficient grid connection for electricity supply. However, plenty of biomass is normally available in such areas. Instead of employing island solutions such as small diesel generators or large battery stacks for power provision, a flexibly operating microscale biomass power plant using locally available and renewable feedstock is not only an efficient way of providing those areas with competitive and reliable electricity, but also a step towards energy self sufficiency for a large share of areas worldwide, and towards mitigating the looming high costs of grid infrastructure upgrading and extension. A novel power plant design combining thermo chemical and biochemical biomass treatment was developed in this research. This system consists of a small scale gasifier and an anaerobic digester unit, both coupled to a gas storage system and a micro turbine as the generation unit. This design is suitable to continuously provide reliable electricity and accommodate fluctuating residential power demand, and it can be scaled to a level of around 100kWe, which is a fitting size for a group of residential customers, such as in a remote village. The project covers a review of available technology; the choice of suitable technology for such a plant and the design of the system; the set up of a detailed plant model in chemical engineering software; extensive simulation studies on the basis of load profiles to evaluate and optimise operation; and feedstock sourcing, efficiency and economic analyses. It will be shown that such a system is a feasible and economic solution for remote power supply, and that it can overcome many of the current obstacles of electrifying rural regions.
