Fos Contemplative Role of (day)light in creating a calming interior spatial atmosphere.

Chantzopoulou, Maria Zoi January 2022 (has links)
This thesis explores the light qualities that generally imbue a contemplative and calming atmosphere andin what extent these qualities can be adjusted and applied in an existing indoor space. Starting point of thethesis are the vigorous pace of everyday life and the necessity of temporary breaks for internal calmnessand contemplation. In the present thesis contemplativeness is devoid of any religious connotations andembraces a more general state of calmness and introspection. In terms of creating a (contemplative) spatial atmosphere the transitional nature of daylight subtly indicatingthe passage of time and seasons is indeed a pivotal factor. In search of the main contemplative factorsa questionnaire was handed. Firstly, participants were asked about the spatial qualities of the spaces theychoose to contemplate, and then they had to choose between a predefined selection of spaces. A secondquestionnaire was created to further explore these contemplative (day)light qualities. The results notednature as an important element of contemplation along with the concepts of tranquility, orientation, andprivacy among others, a toolbox which guided the project phase within an existing meditation space inKTH.Finally, this thesis suggests that the outcome of the interplay between (day)light and nature offers an importantinsight in both the fields of light and architectural design and discusses how light qualities observedin nature can be adjusted to create the same contemplative feelings in indoor spaces.

An enquiry into new methodologies for evaluating sustainable urban form

Osmond, Paul William Hughes, Built Environment, Faculty of Built Environment, UNSW January 2008 (has links)
The motivation for this research is a perceived gap in knowledge regarding the complex relationships between the physical form of the urban environment; its environmental performance as expressed through stocks and flows of materials and energy (urban metabolism); and its experienced physical and psychological qualities (urban ambience). The objective is to develop a practical methodological structure which, through investigating the relationships between these domains, may help inform the evaluation, design and development of more sustainable human settlements. One expression of this apparent knowledge gap is the ambiguity around the classification of urban form and identification of a suitable taxonomic framework to support analysis. Urban morphological research and practice is critically reviewed to derive a rigorous definition of the 'urban structural unit' (USU) to facilitate the subdivision and description of urban form across spatial scales. Application of this construct to a study site in Sydney, Australia provides the basis for subsequent exploration. Investigation of theoretical and applied perspectives on urban ecology, metabolism and design enables distillation of a utilitarian set of structural, functional and ambience properties of the USU. A variety of quantitative methods pertinent to evaluation of these properties is systematically examined to derive a streamlined analytical methodology, integrating hemispherical image analysis, space syntax, isovist and material accounting methods within the USU framework. The efficacy of this methodological 'toolkit' is tested in the final, empirical stage of the research, focussing mainly on the campus of the University of New South Wales. Determination of a range of material, microclimatic, ecosystemic, fractal, syntactic and isovist metrics provides a preliminary quantitative description of the campus USU in terms of its interrelated metabolic and ambience properties. This is further explained and interpreted through multivariate statistical analysis. The results suggest that the USU represents a robust framework for urban evaluation, and application of a relatively parsimonious suite of analytical methods enables a useful initial examination of the relations between significant aspects of urban form, metabolism and ambience. The outcomes of such an evaluation can directly inform built environment practice from a sustainability perspective, and also highlight areas for more detailed investigation.

The emotionally intelligent virtual learning environment : how it may be constructed from the perspective of secondary education

Donkor, Felix Yamoah January 2013 (has links)
This research study, undertaken in an all girls‘ secondary school in London, brings to light different approaches by which a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) may be adopted in order to support the development of students‘ Emotional Intelligence. It examined the views and experiences of 35 teachers (10 of whom were key informants); 5 teaching assistants; 150 students and 2 VLE Content Developers. Drawing upon data obtained from questionnaires, interviews and focus group discussions, findings of the study indicate that the strategic adoption of VLE tools for use in discussion forums, homework support and feedback, amongst others, can help in boosting secondary school students‘ self-confidence, self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy and motivation to use VLE resources. Furthermore, the argument is made, that developing students‘ Emotional Intelligence through the use of online learning tools can lead to the attainment of emotionally intelligent face-to-face classroom environments and hence positive learning outcomes. Based on a process of inductive reasoning, a framework for supporting teachers in developing their students‘ Emotional Intelligence through VLEs is subsequently proposed and its enablers as well as inhibitors discussed. Finally, whilst emphasising that the use of VLEs to promote Emotional Intelligence is eminently generalisable, the limitations of case study research studies such as this one are acknowledged. Hence, it is recommended that future research in this area is undertaken in different contexts so that a more holistic picture is obtained.

O culto ao corpo em academia de ginástica: um estudo etnográfico na Cidade do Rio de Janeiro / The body cult in gymnastic academies: an ethnografic study in the Rio de Janeiro city

Kalyla Maroun 09 April 2008 (has links)
The main goal of the present study was to describe, based on the ambience of the gymnastic academies, the phenomenon of body cult in the contemporaneous society. The ambience, considered as a category in the social imaginary field, recognize the space as a place that is both, product and producer of symbolic relationship and senses. After reviewing the literature concerning the purpose here, an ethnographic study was accomplished throughout both the participant observation and the discourse analysis (French school) in a full-size gymnastic academy localized in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro city. The results obtained in the field research highlighted for three categories of ambience analysis: 1) the mirror house: the motivation of images, objects and shapes; 2) the human motivation: the professional of physical education; and 3) the tribe symbol: the body. It is reasonable to consider the ambience as a significant contributor for emerging the body cult developed in academies and, proliferating in other spheres of social life, it apparently excludes those who are not concerned to the phenomenon under discussion. Furthermore, it is possible to establish an analogy for describing the ambience by pondering: from the Dionysian hedonism to the Apollonian discipline, the image of Narcissus prevails. Finally, mapping the ambience of gymnastic academy is an interesting source for reflecting some of the contemporary social relations, which if compared to other historic periods, were either, maintained, modified or would be into a process of transition. The phenomenon of body cult, as well as the approach by the way dealings is ascertained by searching for esthetics represent the transitory moment which the complexes societies are submitted.

The ongoing increase of energetic and environmental costs of the civil construction sector has been promoting the development and use of environmentally friendly materials and constructive solutions that may yield lesser expenses during construction. Given the increase of importance that these alternative systems has been gaining, and taking into consideration the increase of energy and production costs, it becomes important to analyze the energetic efficiency as an indicator of effectiveness of the edification production system. Given this, this present work aims to measure the energetic content of the materials used in the construction of a housing architectonic model proposed by the National Program of Rural Housing (NPRH) implemented in the counties of Itararé and São Miguel Arcanjo, in the state of São Paulo, to obtain an estimative of energy used during the construction of a house that presents the adequate conditions of ambience to the rural employees and familiar farmers. For such, the execution of this housing unit was divided in five steps of construction to be analyzed: foundation, floor, finishing, coverings and coverage. Information and data of the project, constructive techniques and the materials used during the execution of the housing units were obtained during visits to the field, directly with the responsible technicians for the constructions and through materials supplied by the Federation of Workers in Family Farming of the state of São Paulo (Fetaesp), responsible entity for the NPRH implementations in Itararé and São Miguel Arcanjo. While carrying out energetic analysis of the materials used during the construction, the level of energetic dependence was analyzed during the constructive steps and, therefore, the need of a project adequacy of the architectonic housing model proposed by the National Program of Rural Housing is comprehended. To measure the energetic consumption of the materials used in the construction, energetic coefficients were used found in the literature, used and calculated by the authors that had estimated the used energy in the construction of different typology of edifications. The embedded energy of the materials used in the construction and the energetic cost of human labor in the constructive process were considered. This work has analyzed the ambience conditions offered by the housing model under the proposal of the architectonic project in accordance with the minimum specifications and guidelines demanded by the program. The housing unit located in Itararé consumed a total of 271,011.52 MJ while the model of São Miguel Arcanjo had an energy consumption of 262,980.99 MJ. Of the total energy used in the construction of the units, the items foundation, floor, masonry, finish coating and coverage represented 32,47, 0,38, 20,29, 8,29 e 38,57%, respectively, in the unit of Itararé, and 37,46, 0,43, 19,85, 7,39 e 34,87% in the unit of São Miguel Arcanjo. The steel and the PVC lining were the materials with the highest energy contents. The analysis of the ambience, held from the solutions adopted in architectural design, showed that both implanted housing models were developed with concern to meet the expectations of the ambience aspects, according to the minimum guidelines required by the National Program of Rural Housing. Some changes were suggested in the layout in order to improve the use of spaces housing units, increasing the functionality of the environments and the comfort and welfare of the user.

The broiler production main purpose is to maximize the weight of the broiler in a short time and at low cost. And for this the ambience parameters are fundamental, such as litter, which has the purpose to provide appropriate qualities so that the bird doesn¿t develop locomotor problems such as foot pad dermatitis. The objective of this study was to identify the association between the environment and the existence of locomotor problems in broilers. The project was carried out in a commercial farm. The experiments were followed for two flocks of broiler, and conducted inside four houses. The first broiler flock was house A1, with positive pressure and re-used litter, and other house A2 had positive pressure and new litter type powder saw. The second flock was house A3 with positive pressure and a new litter type of rice husk, and house A4 had with negative pressure and re-used litter. The frequency of birds with each level of gait score was identified, and it was also observed visually the degree of injury with footpad dermatitis. Using the infrared thermal camera the injury inflammation was observed in a total of 30 broilers of 5, 12, 19, 29 and 40 days old. The conditions of the rearing environment as well as the litter characteristics were recorded. Data were analyzed in an attempt to find out the associations. The results showed that the effects of age interacted with the condition of avian to gait score, the house A3 indicated a higher incidence of foot pad dermatitis due the measure of grain size used as substrate and have improved the accuracy of the subclinical diagnosis of foot pad dermatitis in broilers using infrared thermography / Mestrado / Construções Rurais e Ambiencia / Mestra em Engenharia Agrícola

Ljud och vägval : Ljudets påverkan på spelares val / Sound and crossroads : The influence of sound on player’s choice

Wisborg, Fredrik, Liljeholm Wik, San January 2020 (has links)
