The Myths of the Self-Made-Man: Cowboys, Salesmen and Pirates in Tennessee Williams' the Glass Menagerie and Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman

Most books written about American drama concern definitions of masculinity, the American dream, and the family in a society that encourages people to surpass their competences and limits. American playwrights of the twentieth century reveal the anxiety and insecurity of men who do not rise up to the standards of the American dream. In concentrating on these themes, most critics have analyzed the main characters and plots but have left aside hints about other myths. This study aims to analyse the extended use of the cowboy, of salesman, and of pirate in Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. The recurrence of these three myths touches on the core of American drama that playwrights and critics have tried to define endlessly: the definition of the male in the American society.

A peça Doubt, a Parable (2004) de John Patrick Shanley revisita o mundo que ele conheceu quando criança – o bairro do Bronx dos anos 1960. A história se desenrola em uma comunidade escolar católica ítalo-irlandesa e o enredo diz respeito a uma dúvida – que se transforma em crença – por parte de uma das personagens, Irmã Aloysius, a diretora da escola. Ela acredita que o Padre Flynn esteja molestando sexualmente o único aluno negro da escola. A peça é uma construção em aberto, que permite a cada leitor/espectador construir sua própria interpretação dos fatos. Além de ser o autor da peça, Shanley também transformou seu texto teatral em roteiro para o cinema, e atuou como produtor da peça e roteirista e diretor do filme Dúvida, de 2008. Nesta dissertação examino as estratégias utilizadas por Shanley para manter a possibilidade de interpretação aberta quando ele traduz sua obra para mídias diferentes – na página, no palco, no cinema. Ao empreender tal análise, considero pertinente explorar padrões contemporâneos sobre questões como verdade, dúvida e certeza, porque as mesmas encontram-se imbricadas com o construto artístico examinado, favorecendo assim um olhar atento sobre o papel do autor e do leitor nesse processo. Para investigar as construções ideológicas que definem os elementos de dúvida e certeza, utilizo o conceito de Paradoxo do Imaginário, como proposto por Castor Bartolomé Ruiz (2003), dando especial atenção às questões relacionadas com o simbolismo da dúvida, tal como pode ser percebido na obra de Shanley. / John Patrick Shanley’s play Doubt - a Parable (2004) revisits the world he knew as a child, which is the Bronx of the 1960’s. The story centers upon a Catholic Irish-Italian school community, and the plot relates to a doubt - that grows into belief, and ends up as certainty - on the part of Sister Aloysius, the principal of the school, who is persuaded that Father Flynn, the vicar, has been harassing the only Black student in the school. The play is an open-ended construct, allowing each reader/spectator to build their own interpretation of the facts implied. Shanley is more than the author of the play. He has also worked as the producer of the play on the stage and he turned the story into a movie screenplay, Doubt, and has worked as a director to the movie. In this thesis I examine the strategies used by Shanley to keep the possibility of interpretation open as he translates his own work into different media, on the page, on the stage and on the screen. As I do that, I also consider the contemporary standards regarding issues as truth, doubt, certainty, especially as they constitute themselves aesthetically in the fictional world, thus reexamining the role of the author and the role of the reader in the process. So as to investigate the ideological constructions that define the elements of doubt and certainty I refer to the concept of “paradoxes of the imaginary” as proposed by Castor Bartolomé Ruiz (2003), with special attention to questions concerning the symbolism of doubt as perceived in Shanley.

Criado na cidade de Nova Iorque no início dos anos sessenta, o Bread & Puppet Theater estabeleceu-se em meio à vanguarda artística norte-americana do século XX, tornando-se célebre nas apresentações e paradas de rua em protesto contra a guerra do Vietnã. Quatro décadas de teatro mais tarde, em plena guerra no Iraque, o grupo dirigido por Peter Schumann, agora radicado em Vermont, prossegue com seu teatro de papel-maché, em protesto contra os impérios vis e injustos do mundo globalizado. Esta pesquisa compara o espetáculo Portões do Inferno, último \"Circo de Ressurreição Doméstica\" (1998), espetáculo anual apresentado a dezenas de milhares de pessoas, a O Mundo de Pernas para o Ar, uma nova versão do Circo - \"Circo de Insurreição do Primeiro Mundo\" (2004), analisando relações entre forma e história. Observaremos que, em nossa atual civilização, fundada na lógica da mercadoria, na comercialização da arte, na espetacularização da vida (no sentido debordiano), e no embrutecido e fragmentário deslumbramento pós-moderno frente aos mesmos paradigmas exaltados como inovações (ou no esmaecimento do afeto, na expressão de Jameson), o teatro histórico, épico e dialético do Bread and Puppet segue resistindo efetivamente, na contramão da sociedade de consumo, na insurreição contra o mundo globalizado, a insurreição \"da mente contra a supremacia do dinheiro e a insurreição de toda a alma do teatro de bonecos contra a estupidez do maravilhamento pós-moderno\". / Originated in the city of New York in the 1960s, the Bread & Puppet Theater established itself amidst the North American artistic vanguard of the 20th century. It was especially known for its demonstrations and protests against the Vietnam war. Four decades later, during the Iraq war, the group leaded by Peter Schumann, now established in Vermont, continues with their papier-maché theater, demonstrating and protesting against the evil and unfair empires of the globalized world. This study compares Gates of Hell (1998) - the final \"Domestic Resurrection Circus\"- an annual show presented to thousands of people, to Upside Down World - a new version of the circus called \"First World Insurrection Circus\" (2004) - analyzing the relationships between form and history. The analysis reveals that in our current civilization, which is largely based on the logic of commodities, in the commercialization of art, in the \"spectacularization\" of life (in debordian sense) and in the brutalized and fragmented post-modern wonderfulness, which presents and glorifies the same paradigms as innovations (or in its waning of affect, in Fredric Jameson\'s sense), Bread and Puppet\'s historical, epic and dialectic theater effectively resists, going the opposite direction of consumer society, in the insurrection against globalized world, the insurrection \"of the mind against the supremacy of money and the insurrection of the whole soul of puppetry against the stupidity of post-modern wonderfulness\".

Escrutinando as configurações da linguagem verbal e dos elementos simbólicos da peça, o presente trabalho propõe como motivos centrais da obra a demonstração da limitação da palavra para pavimentar a metafísica e a exposição da artificialidade irreversível das crenças religiosas. A despeito do tratamento questionador conferido ao verbo, retratado, pois, como ambíguo, ineficiente e falseador, Tiny Alice não o desacredita e nem tampouco o invalida como mecanismo de representação ou avaliação. Ao contrário, termina por afirmar seu poder elucidador. Em via análoga, embora sugira a impossibilidade da transcendência final dos microcosmos, permite que Julian, impulsionado pela verborragia, chegue ao macrocosmo. A investigação analisa também as personagens e suas motivações e movimentos para além do âmbito da palavra, segundo intertextualidades com sujeitos e circunstâncias de outras obras do cânone albeeano, tais como The Zoo Story (1959-60), Who¿s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962), Box / Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung (1968) e The Man Who Had Three Arms (1983). Por fim, confere importância fundamental ao monólogo final de Julian, não raro compreendido pela crítica como ilógico e absurdo. Conquanto repleto de autorreferencialidades instáveis, menções a eventos de temporalidades díspares, interlocutores distintos e empréstimos literários diversos, tal discurso é compreendido pelo estudo como plenamente coerente, revelador e eficiente na transmissão da argumentação geral da peça, e, ainda, na celebração do ofício literário / Abstract: Reputed as one of the most controversial and enigmatic works in modern North American theatre, Tiny Alice (1964-5) comprises lay brother Julian¿s journey from the beginning of his involvement with Miss Alice, a benefactor who will donate millions to the Catholic Church, to his death as a sacrifice to the divinity Alice. By examining both linguistic and symbolic configurations of the play, this study identifies as its central motives the demonstration of verbal language¿s restrictiveness to command metaphysics, and the exposure of religious beliefs¿ irrevocable artificiality. Notwithstanding the critical treatment consecrated to the linguistic system, depicted as ambiguous, inefficient and delusory, Tiny Alice neither discredits nor invalidates it as a mechanism for analysis and representation. In fact, the play affirms the clarifying power of verbal language. Similarly, although postulating the impossibility of transcendence in microcosms, it allows Julian to reach the macrocosm propelled by verbosity. This investigation also examines the characters and their motivations and actions outside the linguistic domain, according to intertextualities between the play and other titles from the albeean canon, such as The Zoo Story (1959-60), Who¿s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962), Box / Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung (1968) and The Man Who Had Three Arms (1983). Finally, it dedicates utmost importance to Julian¿s final monologue, frequently labeled as ilogical and absurd by critics. 1 Thesis Abstract The present thesis explores six plays written by three (post)modern American playwrights - David Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago and Oleanna, Sam Shepard's Buried Child and True West, and Suzan-Lori Parksʼ The America Play and Topdog/Underdog in order to define and analyze the functions of performative storytelling in the dramatic texts as well as its effects on the characters' identity. In Reading Narrative, J. Hillis Miller analyzes performative storytelling as a human shaped process that people use in order to translate events into meaning and meaning into shared information. Moreover, in Narrative as Performance, Marie Maclean demonstrates the importance of this device in recalibrating human memory and communication and in enriching the traditional mimetic process used in theatre. These ideas are closely followed in the aforementioned American plays through the lenses of the most prominent themes of the end of the twentieth century American theatre. Each of the three American writers uses performative storytelling to delineate socio-political themes. David Mamet comments on the artificiality of the American self, Sam Shepard speaks about the importance of familial past and relationships, whereas Suzan-Lori Parks describes the impact of major national narratives on the...
