Contextualising diversity management : a practice by MNCs towards national development in NigeriaAkobo, Loliya January 2015 (has links)
Studies have acknowledged various conceptualisations of diversity management. These studies have also provided guidance for better and effective ways for managing diversity at the organisational, national and global levels. Nonetheless, it has been argued that focus on conceptualising diversity management has mainly been within the context of the Global North: reflecting mainly Anglo-centric and neo liberal structuring. As a result, this has limited the growth of management styles in Africa. To this effect, this research explores the nature and concept of diversity in Nigeria; it examines diversity management approaches by Shell and General Electric (GE) subsidiaries in Nigeria, and evaluates the broader role of these diversity management practices in contributing to the National Development Plans in Nigeria. Though starting from an Anglo-centric and neo liberal position, I go beyond this structuring as I critically examine the diversity management practices from a Nigerian context and by conducting interviews about the significance of these practices in Nigeria. This research adopts a feminist lens that gives voice and unveils power relations. In addition, I draw on four Western diversity frameworks, including Cox Taylor organisational types and dimensions, Ely and Thomas model of diversity, relational framework by Syed and Ozbilgin and intersectionality theory. These frameworks and approaches analyse the implication of diversity management within these MNC systems in Nigeria as they promote social equality and foster development. In addition, evaluating the broader roles of these MNCs in contributing to national development planning emphasises the need for incorporating diversity management in human resource development theorizing.

Higher Education in Haiti, 1958-1988: an Analysis of its Organization, Administration and Contributions to National DevelopmentBernard, Jacob Jean 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was the status of higher education in Haiti. The purposes were to analyze the organization, administration, and contributions of higher education to national development from 1958 to 1988 and to provide background information from foreign literature which might assist in the improvement Haiti's system of higher education.
In an effort to locate information necessary to achieve these purposes, a computer search was conducted. A survey of available literature in French, Creole, and English and personal and telephone interviews were also conducted.
The results of this study reveal that, in the past three decades, higher education in Haiti has merely functioned as a symbol of social prestige. Haiti's system of higher education exhibits no apparent direction, purpose, of long-term goals. With more than 90 percent of its professors part-time and ill-prepared, its curriculum unrelated to the needs of Haitian society, and its student body in revolt for the past three years, higher education in Haiti is urgently in need of radical reform. Any contribution made to national development by the system of higher education is weak at best.
The small but oppressive elite group that dominates the economic and political realms in Haiti has proved to be a stumbling block to educational reform. The prospect of the establishment of an adequate system of education depends heavily on the establishment of a democratic government.
The State University, which is the prominent instrument for higher education, must be reorganized and strengthened so that it can meet the basic academic standards of a university. This reorganization must include the redesign of the curriculum and the retraining of current professors. It is urgent that the qualitative aspects of higher education be given attention. Higher education should also develop a working relationship with industry in order to prepare individuals who are qualified to fulfill the country's technical needs.

Evaluating the progress towards the implementation of the National Development Plan with specific reference to early childhood development: The case of early childhood development centres in Site-B Khayelitsha 2012-2018Sixhaso, Linda Patience January 2018 (has links)
Masters in Public Administration - MPA / The historic social and economic inequalities had a negative impact on majority of young
children in South Africa. This dates back to post-apartheid era where the development of
young children. of some previously disadvantaged communities, has been weakened by
inadequate access to health care, quality education, social service and quality nutrition.
The present study evaluated the progress made on the implementation of the National
Development Plan (NDP) 2030 using a case study of Early Childhood Development (ECO)
centres in Site-B Township based in Khayelitsha. To support the notion of "leaving no one
behind and universal access to education", the study used a Humanistic Approach Theory
Framework and Human Capital Approach to determine the current status of the formalisation
of the ECD centres, infrastructure and equipment, basic service delivery as well as safety at
the ECD centres in Site-B.
The study adopted a qualitative research design using a semi structured face-to-face interview
schedules with respondents. Purposive sampling was applied to select the critical case
perceived useful for the study. It comprised of 20 respondents, all principals or owners of the
selected ECD centres. ECD centres were selected from the database obtained from the
Department of Social Development (DSD) and the Department of Basic Education (DBE).
From the samples, the study revealed that even though a lot has been done by different
stakeholders to support Early Childhood Development, learning centres located in historically
disadvantaged areas such as Site-B still face a number of challenges. Key among them are:
challenges to comply with the registration process and lack of trained and skilled teachers;
inadequate funding to meet compliance standards; insufficient infrastructure and educational
equipment and lack of support for ECO safety and security measures and health related
emergencies.

A importância da sustentabilidade do pacto federativo no Brasil e sua relação com o desenvolvimento nacional / The importance of the sustenability of the Brazilian Federal Pact and its relation with the national developmentAwazu, Luis Alberto de Ficher 22 October 2012 (has links)
Federalism is fundamental to the understanding of national and regional development in Brazil. The federation in Brazil is still in an improvement process and shall be improved in order that it may become an element of coordination between the national and regional development. For this reason, an adaptation is needed in the traditional mechanisms of the federation, such as the distribution of competencies and constitutional fiscal funds in order to achieve national policy for regional development. This is an important contribution to a mitigation of regional disparities. In this sense, this dissertation seeks to analyze the origins of Brazilian federalism, and the structure of the relevant constitutional mechanisms to the essencial topics of the present work.

Post Occupancy Evaluation of Commuting Network in the Community school childrenYuan, Guo-hua 29 August 2005 (has links)
The junior high schools and primary schools which are numerous and located in the equal distribution are the largest public facility lands in Taiwan. Under the circumstances that the urban area not only has high density of population and spends expensive cost but also has not enough public facilities, the campus which has the green land as well as open space is becoming the only chance of the neighborhood accessing to nature. Proper adjustment of campus planning or architectural design of school buildings is to make the best use of the limited resource of public facilities in the city and to bear the duties and responsibilities of improving the community environmental needs.
Regarding ¡§Challenge 2008: National Development Program¡ÐThe Community Landscape Construction of the New Hometown¡ÐCommunity Landscape Construction Program,¡¨ we expect to build up a living space of high quality and humanization to make the best of the characteristics of the local nature, history and cultural landscape. We aim to reconstruct urban and rural landscape to push forward the improvement and to stimulate the potentials of the development of the Taiwanese society step by step; and ¡§the commuting networks of community school children¡¨ is the most urgent item to subsidize. In Kaohsiung City, there are already 5 commuting networks of community school children completed at the first phase. This research proceed beneficial evaluation on the commuting networks of Ling-Jou Primary School after it is put in usage to collect the empirical data. Hence, a significant feedback and improvement in this program can be achieved.
The researcher selects three dimensions including the dimension of ¡¥functions¡¦, ¡¥psychologies¡¦, and ¡¥policies¡¦ of the commuting networks in the community as the evaluation of effectiveness based on literature review, the researcher also interviews students, inhabitants and teachers to collect the data of their feedback of every specific item including the safety of school trip, the convenience of pick-up students, the facilities of the commuting networks, recreational function, beautiful natural scenery, the levels of satisfaction, the whole environmental image, identification with schools, the creative potential of the public to resolve problems, the experience and ability of participating in public affaires, the buildup of the multiple space aiming to satisfy the human needs, and the effect of publicizing the facilities of the primary schools.¡@
The results of the present study reveal that: (1) The planning and use of the commuting networks in the community which leads to the interaction between school and community is an efficient method to combine school and community so as to help community inhabitants to build up identification and participation with schools. (2) The case of the commuting networks in the community helps the public to perceive the questions, to estimate the reality, to stir up the imagination, to create community features, and to reveal the meaning of community participation. (3) The commuting networks provide the green land, barrier-free pathway so that the inhabitants enjoy doing exercise and taking a walk to achieve the recreational function. The dimensions such as the construction will begin upon the integration of the public ideas can meet the demand of human nature; according to all the interviewees, it is believed that the effect of publicizing the facilities of primary schools provides with a platform for the interaction between school and community, merging the ideas of the inhabitants into the facilities of schools, combine public art to uplift the quality of recreational life of the public, etc. However, the utilization of the inhabitants also increases the burden on the maintenance management of the school. In the other hand, the relevant suggestions to improve the publicizing the facilities of the primary schools as well as urban space planning are provided.
