Live Video Streaming from Android-Enabled Devices to Web Browsers

Bailey, Justin M. 01 January 2011 (has links)
The wide-spread adoption of camera-embedded mobile devices along with the ubiquitous connection via WiFi or cellular networks enables people to visually report live events. Current solutions limit the configurability of such services by allowing video streaming only to fixed servers. In addition, the business models of the companies that provide such (free) services insert visual ads in the streamed videos, leading to unnecessary resource consumption. This thesis proposes an architecture of a real-time video streaming service from an Android mobile device to a server of the user's choice. The real-time video can then be viewed from a web browser. The project builds on open-source code and open protocols to implement a set of software components that successfully stream live video. Experimental evaluations show practical resource consumption and a good quality of the streamed video. Furthermore, the architecture is scalable and can support large number of simultaneous streams with additional increase in hardware resources.

Android Application Context Aware I/O Scheduler

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Android has been the dominant platform in which most of the mobile development is being done. By the end of the second quarter of 2014, 84.7 percent of the entire world mobile phones market share had been captured by Android. The Android library internally uses the modified Linux kernel as the part of its stack. The I/O scheduler, is a part of the Linux kernel, responsible for scheduling data requests to the internal and the external memory devices that are attached to the mobile systems. The usage of solid state drives in the Android tablet has also seen a rise owing to its speed of operation and mechanical stability. The I/O schedulers that exist in the present Linux kernel are not better suited for handling solid state drives in particular to exploit the inherent parallelism offered by the solid state drives. The Android provides information to the Linux kernel about the processes running in the foreground and background. Based on this information the kernel decides the process scheduling and the memory management, but no such information exists for the I/O scheduling. Research shows that the resource management could be done better if the operating system is aware of the characteristics of the requester. Thus, there is a need for a better I/O scheduler that could schedule I/O operations based on the application and also exploit the parallelism in the solid state drives. The scheduler proposed through this research does that. It contains two algorithms working in unison one focusing on the solid state drives and the other on the application awareness. The Android application context aware scheduler has the features of increasing the responsiveness of the time sensitive applications and also increases the throughput by parallel scheduling of request in the solid state drive. The suggested scheduler is tested using standard benchmarks and real-time scenarios, the results convey that our scheduler outperforms the existing default completely fair queuing scheduler of the Android. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2014

Evaluation of the Android Third-party stores : Specifically on the risks of Androidapplication / Evaluation of the Android Third-party stores : Specifically on the risks of Android application

Rong, Huan January 2016 (has links)
Android is an open source mobile operating system contributed by Google. In general, Google Play is the most secure place to download the mobile applications for Android system. [1] Products from this website are surely safe promised by Google Company. But there are many other third-party app stores around the world offering similar software. One incentive for them is that the security policy on different platforms varies a lot, and Android developers are free to distribute apps in any intended ways, which leads to a certain risk in the assorted stores such as malware. Therefore, it is crucial to know which application store can be trusted from the various app stores. [2] To support our research, a tool named APK Safety Test is developed to compare the APK files from different application stores with the version on Google Play. In this study, nine stores around the world are chosen and 20 various applications from them are checked in real-time by using the tool. From this research, people can learn the different risk how can be detected. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the result of risks how to affect the applications. Privacy Preserving Implementation in the E-health System

Chen, Zongzhe January 2013 (has links)
E-health systems are widely used in today’s world, and have a stillbrighter future with the rapid development of smart phones. A fewyears ago, e-health system could only be carried out on computers. But recently, people are using this as a phone application, so thatthey can get information at any time and anywhere. In addition, some smart phones can already measure heart rate and bloodpressure, for example, ‚Instant Heart Rate‛ and ‚Blood PressureMonitor‛. By using these kinds of applications, users can easilymeasure their health data and store them in their mobile phones. However, the problem of privacy has been attracting people’sattention. After uploading their data to the database, users do havethe right to protect their privacy. For instance, even the doctor hasthe authority to obtain the health record; the user's name can behidden, so that the doctor does not know who the owner of this datais. This problem also includes anonymization, pseudonymity, unlinkability, unobservability and many other aspects. In this thesis work, an android application is proposed to solve thisproblem. Users can set their own rules, and all data requests shouldbe dealt with by calling the rules. In addition, a module in the serveris to be developed to carry out the whole process of privacypreserving and the users’ data should be stored in the database.A standard for users to set rules is determined, which is bothdynamical and flexible. The application realizes some additional rulechecking functions to determine whether users have set a valid rule.Privacy rules can be created, deleted, or uploaded. In addition, userscan update their health record and upload it to the database. Theserver will call different protocols to deal with different requests, andthe data which obtains the requests is responded to by calling theusers’ own privacy rules.

Intermediary System Using Image Classification for Online Shopping

Liu, Yunan 01 June 2016 (has links)
Online shopping is becoming a popular option for consumers. Currently, the most common product searching method that online shopping websites provide is keyword search. Most shoppers have to carefully select relevant keywords to search for their favorite products. Finding desired products using a query image for online shopping is currently not available. Image has been used for searching similar images in the database but they are usually not well annotated. Research effort has been devoted to developing reliable image-based retrieval systems for applications such as medical image retrieval and trademark search. None of these developments focuses on improving online shopping experiences for consumers. This thesis reports the development of an image retrieval system to provide better online shopping experience for consumers. The system searches products with similar appearance such as shape and textures to the query images the user provides. Turn angle is a contour based shape descriptor. It has many unique properties that make it a perfect shape matching method for image retrieval. The best matching image has the shortest shape distance to the query shape. Turn angle, however, could fail with slightly stretched shapes. Dynamic programming is used to help turn angle match slightly deformed shapes. Another technique called centroid distance is also included as a restriction for shape matching in order to avoid retrieving irrelevant or disparate shapes. With a well-built database, the enhanced turn angle descriptor that includes dynamic programming and centroid distance is able to reach a high accuracy rate.Shape matching alone is usually not sufficient for a powerful retrieval system. Products with similar shape but very different textures will not be distinguished based solely on shape matching. Edge histogram is a robust shape descriptor for texture matching. It can be implemented to construct either global or local histogram for this purpose. Global edge histogram uses only 5 bins, which is simple but ignores detail texture information. Local and semi-global edge histograms are more complex but retains detail texture information. A hierarchical matching system is built to combine the shape and texture descriptors for better retrieval accuracy.Easy access to the shopping system is desired. An Android Application is developed to provide consumers a convenient and friendly tool to use the system. Grab cut is applied to the captured image to segment the object from the background. The segmentation provides the retrieval system the required contour information for shape matching. The Android Application submits the captured image along with the segmented contour to the server. After the retrieval process is completed, the server sends retrieved images of similar products back to the Android App for the user to consider. Using the retrieval system via a handheld device provides a user-friendly online shopping experience.
