Hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos (HPAs) em organismos marinhos da Baía do Almirantado, Península Antártica / Polyclyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine organisms from the Admiralty Bay, Antartic Peninsula

Hiléia dos Santos Barroso 03 November 2010 (has links)
The concentrations of PAHs had been analyzed in invertebrates (Laternula elliptica, Nacella concinna, Yoldia eightsi, Glyptonotus antarcticus, Serolis polita, Euphausia superba, Bovalia gigantea, Sterechinus neumayeri, Odontaster validus and Ophionotus victoriae), fish (Notothenia rossii) and birds (Pygoscelis adélia, P. papua, P. antarcticus, Macronectes giganteus, Catharacta sp. and Larus dominicanus) Admiralty Bay. The analyses of HPAs had been carried through GC/MS. The occurrence of PAHs in the samples indicated the bioavailability of these compounds for the organisms of the region. The concentration of total PAHs for the invertebrates (3,09 to 174,4 ng g-1 pu) were higher than fish (0,97 to 58,9 ng g-1 pu) and lower than in birds (60,1- 6861,0 ng g-1 pu) however, they had presented similarity between themselves. The adult flying birds had presented higher concentrations than penguins. Light and alkylated compounds had predominated in almost all samples, mainly the alkylnaphthalenes. The main source of PAHs for the organism was the DFA used in the EACF. Predators/necrophagous species had presented different individual PAHs from the feeder/deposit species. There was no relation between the increase of concentrations of PAHs and the increase of the trophic level of the groups, and the absorption of PAHs for the species had the influence of factors such as metabolism, physiology, alimentary habits and lipid content of the analyzed species.

Lemmertz, Heloisa January 2015 (has links)
This study aims to analyze the Brazilian scientific production in the context of research conducted in the Antarctic environment, which involves scientists and nonscientists, civil and military. The general aim of this research is to analyze the factors that build the Brazilian science in the context of the Brazilian Antarctic Program, mapping out actors and institutions that make up the Program, considering the context of production of this science and the social aspects that underlie the construction of scientific knowledge in PROANTAR. Scientific production in PROANTAR is analyzed by the concept of transepistemic arenas of Karin Knorr Cetina, which understand science as a product of negotiations by scientists and nonscientists, each one with their concerns and arguments, this actors work together in order to accomplish a joint project, the development of the Brazilian Antarctic Program in this context. We will approach the scientists as members of a scientific community that is heterogeneous. In addition to a literature review on the topic, this paper presents the analysis of interviews with scientists and non-scientists linked to PROANTAR as well as the analysis of documents produced by the bodies responsible for the Program. It is expected that this work can contribute to the planning of the new directions of PROANTAR, through an analysis of negotiations and interests among the actors in the transepistemic arenas of PROANTAR.

Gandra, Rogério Madruga January 2013 (has links)
This thesis addresses the definition of a Brazilian strategic-scientific project for Antarctica from the analysis of the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) geopolitical evolution. The Antarctic question, as discussed in this thesis, is based in two antagonistic theoretical premises taken from the foreign relations (realism and liberalism). The premises of scientific collaboration and the pacific use of the region, established in the Antarctic Treaty (1959), determined a discussion of this topic using a liberal epistemology. The Antarctic geopolitics at the beginning of the 21st century leans towards a scientific-environmental dialectics, to the detriment of the economical-territorial dimension that dominated the discourse for the Austral region up to the emblematic year of 1991, when the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (Madrid Protocol) was ratified. If the 20th century was marked by the arrival of the Antarctic science, represented by the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958), the current century is characterized, so far, as the one in which the Antarctic science should build its own agenda. The Signatory-States increasingly recognize the political weight of an Antarctic science of excellence within the ATS. By establishing the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR, from the Portuguese Programa Antártico Brasileiro) in 1982, Brazil started to defend of its substantial interests in the Antarctic region. These interests, at first, were subordinated to the Cold War contingencies and the Brazil-potency Project. However, the subjective invocation of such interests did not allow the delimitation of its real extent. This geopolitical positioning in relation to Antarctica was first mentioned in 2011 when the Antarctic question, through the preparation of a Strategic Planning for PROANTAR (2012 - 2022), acquired a relative strategic importance for the country. In other words, the program became closer to a project of State. This plan contains directives that shall grant a relevant political status to Brazil within the ATS, which implies the effective participation of the country in the decisions about the fate of the region. The integration of the country into the select group of signatory States that develop cutting-edge research in Antarctica is the main directive of this plan. By understanding the strategic-geopolitical importance of Antarctica to Brazil, and the role of science in the ATS politics, this thesis proposes new challenges and paradigms to the Brazilian Antarctic science, supporting to the current Strategic Planning for PROANTAR (2012 - 2022) and the most recent Action Plan for the Antarctic Science (2013 - 2018). Thus, the analysis of PROANTAR from the perspective of the definition of a strategic-scientific project and its geopolitical repercussions are the main objetives of this thesis, which are reflected in the following goals: an analysis of the Antarctic geopolitics, which determined a preliminary discussion regarding the geopolitical premises of the Treaty and the Antarctic science from a historical perspective; an analysis of the geopolitical dimensions of the region at the benning of the 21st century, identifying the year 1991 (ratification of the Madrid Protocol) as the ATS turning point, when the scientific-environmental dimension began to acquired a greater geopolitical relevance; an analysis of the Antarctic question in the Brazilian geopolitical line of thought, which allowed the discussion about the construction of a possible Antarctic territorial imaginary, as well as its repercussion on the scientific dimension of PROANTAR. Finally, we analyze the new challenges to the Brazilian Antarctic science in the 21st century: the geographic expansion of the PROANTAR research in that continent, especially the investigations into the Antarctic ice sheet, breaking the paradigm of a peripheral science that has been historically confined to the Antarctic Peninsula region; and the institution of a policy that guarantees the quality of the scientific production through an adequate logistic-financial support. Overcoming such challenges is paramount for the inclusion of the Brazilian Antarctic research in the so-called emerging frontiers of science. Nonetheless, as we analyze the political-scientific actions, converging to the definition of a Brazilian strategic project for Antarctic, which has been implemented since the beginning of the century, it becomes clearer the contradictions and obstacles to the definition of such project become: the bureaucratic hindrances and the volatile political actions, which in addition to the lack of recognition of the (geo)political relevance of a cutting-edge Antarctic science, especially by a large part of the scientific community working at PROANTAR, prevent the institution of a the scientific politicy and the definition of a strategic-scientific project for the region.

Microorganisms in cryogenic environments: glacial ice, soils exposed by glacier retreat, and polar permafrosts.

Rubens Tadeu Delgado Duarte 10 September 2010 (has links)
The effect of climate changes on microorganisms is still unclear, because little is known about the species that inhabit the extreme regions as the glacial ice, antarctic soils and the permanently frozen soil (permafrost). The permafrost is able to preserve the sedimented biological materials by thousands or even millions of years, being an important source for microbiological studies. The objective was to study the microbial diversity in cryogenic samples: glacial ice, soil exposed by glacial retreat and polar permafrosts, as well as to study the functional diversity of alkane monooxygenase genes (alk) in the permafrost. Cultivationindependent methods based on the 16S rRNA gene were used, as DGGE, clone library and 454 Pyrosequencing. Analysis of the King George Island (Antarctic Peninsula) glaciers and the South Pole ice revealed about 3x104 cells/mL each, and different micro-organisms were detected, predominantly members from Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Cyanobacteria, many of which already described in other cryogenic environments. The soil in front of the Baranowski Glacier has a different community structure compared with the ice. Soils exposed by glacier retreat revealed an ecological succession, and heterotrophic bacteria occurred all through the process. Nitrogen-fixing populations were composed by cyanobacteria at the early stages, and shifted to Rhodopseudomonas and Rhodobacter in the older soils. The observed changes may be related to an increase of K, Mg+, NH4 +, NO3- and/or CO2, detected after 15-20 years of soil exposure. The community of permafrosts varies by location and age (5,000 - 8 millions of years). The alkM gene was detected in old Arctic permafrosts (3 millions of years), while alkB genes were found on Arctic samples from 15,000 to 120,000 years, and in Antarctic modern soils. Some of these clones may represent new alk genes. The contributions of this project covers the goals of the International Polar Year (IPY 2007-2009), particularly in assessing the microbial ecology of Antarctica.

Relationships between contaminants and hormones involved in breeding decisions in polar seabirds / Effets des polluants organiques persistants et des métaux lourds sur la physiologie du stress des oiseaux polaires

Tartu, Sabrina 17 October 2014 (has links)
In order to maximise fitness, individuals will have to take several decisions that shall match with environmental conditions (whether to breed or not, when to breed, what level of parental investment). These decisions are mediated by hormones : such as luteinizing hormone (LH), a pituitary hormone involved in the onset of breeding, stress hormones (corticosterone, CORT) and prolactin (PRL) a pituitary hormone involved in the expression of parental care. Environmental contaminants are present world-wide, and also in Polar Regions. Since many contaminants are endocrine disruptors, they may impair breeding decisions, but evidences are scarce for wildlife. The aim of this thesis was to assess the relationships between some legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs : PCBs, organochlorine pesticides), mercury (Hg) and hormones (LH, CORT, PRL) in different Arctic and Antarctic seabird species. Results show that POPs and Hg clearly interact with LH, CORT and PRL secretion. These contaminants appear to target different hormones : increasing Hg was related to decreasing pituitary hormone secretion (LH and PRL) ; whereas increasing PCBs were linked to an exacerbated CORT response to an acute stress. Hg disrupted LH secretion by probably suppressing GnRH input to the pituitary ; PCBs seem to act at the adrenal level by probably stimulating ACTH receptors. Legacy POPs and Hg are therefore able to disrupt reproductive decisions and to impact fitness : elevated Hg levels were linked to skipped reproduction and poor incubation behavior ; elevated PCB levels may make individuals more susceptible to environmental perturbations. The long-term consequences of contaminant exposure for seabirds are discussed in the context of the environmental challenges affecting polar regions.

The diversity of key anabolic genes in antarctic hypolithons

Makhalanyane, Thulani Peter January 2009 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / Antarctica is known for its pristine environments. A variety of unsuitable environmental conditions were once thought to render the continent unsuitable for sustaining life. However, metagenomic data have revealed a wealth of species diversity in a range of biotopes.Hypolithons, photosynthetic communities which live under translucent rocks in climatically extreme environments, are an important input source for both carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in this hyperarid desert environment. Microbial contribution to biogeochemical cycling resulting in fixation of both C and N remains poorly understood. Moreover, there is a reported close interplay between both cycles, with nitrogen being reported to be a limiting factor in carbon assimilation. In this study the diversity of C and N fixing organisms was investigated by using the cbbL and nifH genes as phylogenetic and functional markers. High Molecular weight metagenomic DNA and RNA was extracted from hypolithons. PCR amplification was carried out using cbbL (800 bp for red-like, 1,100 bp for green-like) and nifH (360 bp) gene specific primers.Resultant PCR products were used to construct libraries which were screened for correct sized inserts. Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) was used to de-replicate clones prior to sequencing. Phylogenetic positions from both clone libraries were established by aligning nucleotide sequences and constructing similarity trees using NJ clustering methods.BLASTn results indicated the presence of previously uncultured organisms which contain cbbL and nifH genes. BLASTn results were characterized by low percentages of maximum identity (typically <95%), a potential indicator of novel taxa. Sequences from respective libraries clustered with cyanobacteria such as Nostoc, Scytonema, and Tolypothrix and α-, β-, and γ-Proteobacteria such as Azotobacter, Agrobacterium and Mesorhizobium. Generally sequence results indicate a largely homogenous, being dominated by specific taxa. Each group may contain potential keystone species, essential for both biogeochemical cycling in oligotrophic environment.

Ground-based remote sensing of Antarctic and Alpine solid precipitation / Télédétection au sol de précipitations solides antarctiques et alpines

Durán Alárcon, Claudio 23 October 2019 (has links)
Solid precipitation plays an important role in the Earth's climate system, as well as for the maintenance of ecosystems and the development of human society. The large uncertainty in precipitation estimates and the discrepancies within climate model projections make this component of the hydrological cycle important as a research topic. Remote sensing allows to monitor precipitation and clouds in regions where in-situ observations are scarce and scattered, but with limited temporal resolution and a blind zone close to the ground level for spaceborne sensors, and limited visibility in the lower atmosphere in complex terrain for ground-based radars. The objectives of this dissertation are the following: 1) to characterize cloud and precipitation in Antarctica, detecting the presence of supercooled liquid and ice particles near the ground level using a ground-based 532-nm depolarization lidar; 2) to characterize the vertical structure of the precipitation in two contrasted but important regions of the cryosphere, Antarctica and the Alps, in the low troposphere using ground-based radars. In this study, a cloud and precipitation hydrometeor detection method is proposed using lidar data, complemented with a K-band micro rain radar (MRR) to improve the detection of precipitation, both instruments deployed at the Dumont d'Urville (DDU) station in East Antarctica. A method based on lidar depolarization and attenuated backscattering coefficient and the use of k-means clustering is developed for the particle classification. The classification of cloud and precipitation particles provides the vertical distribution of supercooled liquid water, as well as planar oriented ice and randomly oriented ice particles. The comparison between ground-based and satellite-derived classifications shows consistent patterns for the vertical distribution of supercooled liquid water in clouds. The vertical structure of precipitation near the surface is analyzed using the Doppler moments derived from three MRR profiles at DDU, the Princess Elisabeth (PE) station, at the interior of East Antarctica, and at the Col de Porte (CDP) station, in the French Alps. These analyses demonstrate that local climate plays an important role in the vertical structure of the precipitation. In Antarctica, the strong katabatic winds blowing from the high plateau down to the coast decrease the radar reflectivity factor near the surface due to the sublimation of the snowfall particles. Doppler moments also provide rich information to understand precipitation processes, such as aggregation and riming, as observed at DDU and CDP.The results also show that in the interior of the Antarctic continent a significant part (47%) of the precipitation profiles completely sublimate before reaching the surface, due to the dry atmospheric conditions, while in the coast of Antarctica it corresponds to about the third part (36%). In the Alps, this percentage is reduced to 15%. The major occurrence of particle sublimation is observed below the altitude where CloudSat profiles are contaminated by ground clutter. Therefore, this phenomenon cannot be fully captured from space with the current generation of sensors. This dissertation contributes to the study of the vertical structure of snowfall in the low troposphere, useful for the evaluation of precipitation remote sensing products, which may have severe limitations in the vicinity of the surface.
