Theory of ultrafast exciton dynamics in photosynthetic antenna systems

Brüggemann, Ben 13 July 2004 (has links)
The multi-exciton description of excitation energy transfer in chromophore complexes and biological light harvesting antenna systems is extended to include the exciton-exciton annihilation processes. To achieve a complete microscopic description the approach is based on intra--chromophore internal conversion processes which leads to non-radiative transitions from higher to lower lying exciton manifolds. Besides an inclusion of exciton-exciton annihilation the used multi-exciton density matrix theory also accounts for a coupling to low-frequency vibrational modes and the radiation field. Concentrating on transitions from the two- to the single-exciton manifold exact and approximate expressions for the annihilation rate are derived. A first application of the introduced extended multi-exciton density matrix theory is given by the computation of ultrafast transient absorption spectra. To elucidate the process of exciton-exciton annihilation in intensity dependent transient absorption data the approach is applied to the B850 ring of the LH2 found in rhodobacter sphaeroides. The signatures of exciton-exciton annihilation as well as the influence of static disorder are discussed in detail. The simulations of transient absorption including static disorder and orientational averaging are in good agreement with experimental data. The recently published structure of the Photosystem I (PS1) of Synechococcus elongatus made it for the first time possible to introduce an excitonic model for the 96 chlorophylls embedded in the protein matrix of that core-antenna system, as presented in this work. The challenge has been to reproduce linear frequency domain spectra in a wide temperature range as well as the time resolved fluorescence. The couplings and the dipole-moments of the chlorophylls are extracted from the x-ray crystal structure. Since the position of the energetic levels of the chlorophylls depend on the respective surrounding their determination is achieved by fitting low temperature absorption, linear dichroism and circular dichroism at the same time. After assigning some chromophores to the red-most states, an evolutionary algorithm is used to get the best fit. The quality of the resulting PS1 model (additionally accounting for inhomogeneous line broadening) is confirmed in calculating time dependent fluorescence spectra which show a good agreement with recent experimental results. The outlined method is also applicable to other photosynthetic antenna systems. The above described exciton models successfully explain the respective measurements. In a second step, they will be used to propose a new type of experiment, the exciton control experiment. Based on an exciton model for the FMO complex of Prosthecochloris aestuarii and the proposed PS1 model of Synechococcus elongatus one studies the laser pulse formation of excitonic wavepackets, i.e. a coherent superposition of excitonic states similar to vibrational wavepackets. Optimal Control theory is used to calculate the shape of femtosecond laser pulses that leads to a spatial localization of excitation energy. The possibility to populate such a localized target state is demonstrated, even in the presence of disorder or exciton-exciton annihilation, and it is shown that the efficiency of localization as well as the length the most suited pulses strongly depend on temperature.

[en] PRECODING AND RESOURCE ALLOCATION FOR CELL-FREE MASSIVE MIMO SYSTEMS / [pt] PRÉ-CODIFICAÇÃO E ALOCAÇÃO DE RECURSOS EM SISTEMAS DE MÚLTIPLAS ANTENAS MASSIVOS LIVRES DE CÉLULAS

03 December 2020 (has links)
[en] Cell-Free Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems have emerged in recent years as a combination of massive MIMO, distributed antenna systems (DAS) and network MIMO. This thesis explores the downlink channel of such scenario with single and multiple-antenna access points (APs) and takes into account both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI). We propose transmit processing schemes that combine precoding, power allocation and AP selection (APS). To begin with, two APS strategies have been investigated, one based on exhaustive search (ES-APS) and the other on the large-scale fading coefficients (LSAPS), in order to reduce the complexity of cell-free networks. Subsequently, we present two iterative precoding techniques following the minimum meansquare error (MMSE) criterion with total power constraint. The first we call MMSE, with total power constraint. We also incorporate robustness in the developed method, called RMMSE, a robust precoder with total power constraint. As the third element of the proposed schemes, power allocation techniques are developed, with optimal, adaptive and uniform approaches. An optimal power allocation (OPA) algorithm is presented based on the maximization of the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). The adaptive solution (APA) is characterized by the stochastic gradient of the mean-square error (MSE) and the uniform alternative (UPA) proposes to equalize all power coefficients. All configurations must fulfil an antenna power constraint, imposed by the system. A sum-rate analysis is carried out for all studied techniques and the computational cost of each one is calculated. Numerical results prove that the proposed techniques outperform existing conjugate beamforming (CB) and zero-forcing (ZF) precoders, both with uniform and optimal power allocation, in terms of bit error rate (BER), sum-rate and minimum SINR. Furthermore, we also attest that performance can be maintained or even improved in the presence of APS.

Applications of Adaptive Antennas in Third-Generation Mobile Communications Systems

Lau, Buon Kiong January 2002 (has links)
Adaptive antenna systems (AAS's) are traditionally of interest only in radar and sonar applications. However, since the onset of the explosive growth in demand for wireless communications during the 1990's, researchers are giving increasing attention to the use of AAS technology to overcome practical challenges in providing the service. The main benefit of the technology lies in its ability to exploit the spatial domain, on top of the temporal and frequency domains, to improve on transceiver performance. This thesis presents a unified study on two classes of preprocessing techniques for uniform circular arrays (UCA's). UCA's are of interest because of their natural ability to provide a full azimuth (i.e. 360') coverage found in typical scenarios for sensor array applications, such as radar, sonar and wireless communications. The two classes of preprocessing techniques studied are the Davies transformation and the interpolated array transformations. These techniques yield a mathematically more convenient form - the Vandermonde form - for the array steering vector via a linear transformation. The Vandermonde form is useful for different applications such as direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and optimum or minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamforming in correlated signal environment and beampattem synthesis. A novel interpolated array transformation is proposed to overcome limitations in the existing interpolated array transformations. A disadvantage of the two classes of preprocessing techniques for UCA's with omnidirectional elements is the lack of robustness in the transformed array steering vector to array imperfections under certain conditions. In order to mitigate the robustness problem, optimisation problems are formulated to modify the transformation matrices. / Suitable optimisation techniques are then applied to obtain more robust transformations. The improved transformations are shown to improve robustness but at the cost of larger transformation errors. The benefits of the robustification procedure are most apparent in DOA estimation. In addition to the algorithm level studies, the thesis also investigates the use of AAS technology with respect to two different third generation (3G) mobile communications systems: Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) and Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA). EDGE, or more generally GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN), is the evolution of the widely successful GSM system to provide 3G mobile services in the existing radio spectrum. It builds on the TDMA technology of GSM and relies on improved coding and higher order modulation schemes to provide packet-based services at high data rates. WCDMA, on the other hand, is based on CDMA technology and is specially designed and streamlined for 3G mobile services. For WCDMA, a single-user approach to DOA estimation which utilises the user spreading code and the pulse-shaped chip waveform is proposed. It is shown that the proposed approach produces promising performance improvements. The studies with EDGE are concerned with the evaluation of a simple AAS at the system and link levels. / Results from, the system and link level simulations are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of AAS technology in the new mobile communications system. Finally, it is noted that the WCDMA and EDGE link level simulations employ the newly developed COST259 directional channel model, which is capable of producing accurate channel realisations of macrocell environments for the evaluation of AAS's.

Ho, Zuleita K.-M., Jorswieck, Eduard A., Engelmann, Sabrina 22 November 2013 (has links) (PDF)
In heterogeneous dense networks where spectrum is shared, users privacy remains one of the major challenges. When the receivers are not only interested in their own signals but also in eavesdropping other users' signals, the cross talk becomes information leakage. We propose a novel and efficient secrecy rate enhancing relay strategy EFFIN for information leakage neutralization. The relay matrix is chosen such that the effective leakage channel (spectral and spatial) is zero. Thus, it ensures secrecy regardless of receive processing employed at eavesdroppers and does not rely on wiretaps codes to ensure secrecy, unlike other physical layer security techniques such as artificial noise. EFFIN achieves a higher sum secrecy rate over several state-of-the-art baseline methods.

Information Leakage Neutralization for the Multi-Antenna Non-Regenerative Relay-Assisted Multi-Carrier Interference Channel

In heterogeneous dense networks where spectrum is shared, users' privacy remains one of the major challenges. On a multi-antenna relay-assisted multi-carrier interference channel, each user shares the spectral and spatial resources with all other users. When the receivers are not only interested in their own signals but also in eavesdropping other users' signals, the cross talk on the spectral and spatial channels becomes information leakage. In this paper, we propose a novel secrecy rate enhancing relay strategy that utilizes both spectral and spatial resources, termed as information leakage neutralization. To this end, the relay matrix is chosen such that the effective channel from the transmitter to the colluding eavesdropper is equal to the negative of the effective channel over the relay to the colluding eavesdropper and thus the information leakage to zero. Interestingly, the optimal relay matrix in general is not block-diagonal which encourages users' encoding over the frequency channels. We proposed two information leakage neutralization strategies, namely efficient information leakage neutralization (EFFIN) and local-optimized information leakage neutralization (LOPTIN). EFFIN provides a simple and efficient design of relay processing matrix and precoding matrices at the transmitters in the scenario of limited power and computational resources. LOPTIN, despite its higher complexity, provides a better sum secrecy rate performance by optimizing the relay processing matrix and the precoding matrices jointly. The proposed methods are shown to improve the sum secrecy rates over several state-of-the-art baseline methods.

Optimisation et Auto-Optimisation dans les réseaux LTE / Optimization and Self-Optimization in LTE-Advanced Networks

Tall, Abdoulaye 17 December 2015 (has links)
The mobile network of Orange in France comprises more than 100 000 2G, 3G and 4G antennas with severalfrequency bands, not to mention many femto-cells for deep-indoor coverage. These numbers will continue toincrease in order to address the customers’ exponentially increasing need for mobile data. This is an illustrationof the challenge faced by the mobile operators for operating such a complex network with low OperationalExpenditures (OPEX) in order to stay competitive. This thesis is about leveraging the Self-Organizing Network(SON) concept to reduce this complexity by automating repetitive or complex tasks. We specifically proposeautomatic optimization algorithms for scenarios related to network densification using either small cells orActive Antenna Systems (AASs) used for Vertical Sectorization (VeSn), Virtual Sectorization (ViSn) and multilevelbeamforming. Problems such as load balancing with limited-capacity backhaul and interference coordination eitherin time-domain (eICIC) or in frequency-domain are tackled. We also propose optimal activation algorithms forVeSn and ViSn when their activation is not always beneficial. We make use of results from stochastic approximationand convex optimization for the mathematical formulation of the problems and their solutions. We also proposea generic methodology for the coordination of multiple SON algorithms running in parallel using results fromconcave game theory and Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI)-constrained optimization.
