The problem with which this investigation was concerned was that of determining the effectiveness of massed group desensitization in the reduction of anxiety. Thirty test-anxious nursing students who scored in the upper quartile on the Test Anxiety Questionnaire (TAQ) served as the subjects. The subjects were assigned by the use of a randomized block procedure to one of the following three groups matched on the basis of their pre-test TAQ scores: (1) desensitization, (2) placebo, and (3) control.

The first was to estimate the extent of student test anxiety in allied health care students. The second was to determine the predictors of student test anxiety. The third was to determine if the Student Learning Center provides an effective method of reducing test anxiety in the subjects. The final purpose was to recommend areas for future research.

Attainment of Low Levels of Muscle Tension: Biofeedback-Assisted/Cue-Controlled Relaxation and Biofeedback Training Compared

Cue-controlled relaxation appeas to have several advantages over prominent anxiety-reduction treatments. It does not require the formulation of conditioned stimulus hierarchies nor the use of mental imagery as does systematic desensitization nor the application of noxious stimularion (farradic shock) utilized in anxiety relief. However, its efficacy, in quantitative terms, has not been determined. The present study compared the effectiveness in attainment of relaxation of instructional set, biofeedback training, and biofeedback-assisted/cue-controlled relaxation training procedures. Results indicate that cue-controlled relaxation training was more effective in terms of mean level of frontal is EMG and degree of maintenance of low EMG levels than either biofeedback training or instructions.

Preference of non-pharmaceutical preoperative anxiety reduction intervention in patients undergoing elective surgery

Yes / For patients to be treated, decisions about their care must be made before treatment begins. In case of pre-operative anxiety, it is currently unknown how clinicians and patients discuss information about the issue, and it is also not known whether clinicians consider (or are ready to consider) their patients’ preferences of non-pharmaceutical pre-operative anxiety reduction interventions. At present no study has been conducted to find information on surgical patients’ preferences of, and their involvement in decisions about non-pharmaceutical interventions for reducing their pre-operative anxiety. This paper investigates elective surgical patients’ involvement in treatment decisions with the aim of finding out their preferred non-pharmaceutical pre-operative anxiety reduction interventions before they undergo elective surgery. Method: A survey method was used to collect data on patients’ preference of non-pharmaceutical preoperative anxiety reduction interventions at a tertiary health facility in Nigeria. Participants: A sample of 30 participants-17 male and 13 female, schedule to undergo surgical operations was selected using a convenient sampling method. Their ages range between 17 to 70 years (mean age = 41.03 and standard deviation = 16.09). Study design/procedure: To elicit preference of interventions, the study participants were presented with cards that contain picture of surgical patient receiving one of the non-pharmaceutical interventions used in reducing pre-operative anxiety. The pictures were presented one at a time for 30-40 seconds. The researcher then gives the participants a sheet of paper with the different interventions boldly written for the participants to rank order them according to the degree of their preferences. Through this process, data was collected from all the 30 participants. Results: The results obtained were entered into SPSS for analysis. Descriptive statistics, at 95 % confidence was calculated to estimate the percentage, mean, standard deviation and confidence intervals based on the participants’ preference of the interventions. Discussions: The findings were discussed alongside the existing literature and recommendations were offered for clinical practice and further research.

Stress and Anxiety Experience of Dental Hygiene Students

The ETSU dental hygiene program is very competitive and rigorous for those admitted. Student dental hygienists may experience higher levels of anxiety and more stressors while completing their course work and clinical hours than they have previously experienced in general education and prerequisite courses. These increased number of stressors and higher levels of anxiety may have negative impacts on students’ academic performance and success in clinical learning environments. A better understanding of the actual need for a stress reduction and anxiety management curriculum will facilitate creating and implementing this type of curriculum. A total of 44 current ETSU dental hygiene students were included in the study, juniors (55%) and (45%) seniors. Nearly all respondents reported their current stress and anxiety levels are affecting their lives (97.5%). Consistently over a third of students who completed surveys from the ETSU dental hygiene program are experiencing physical symptoms of stress and anxiety including headaches, gastrointestinal distress, trouble sleeping, eating too much or too little daily, tense muscles, worry or phobias, anger or hostility, irritability or hostility, and nervousness 2-3 times a week. The average stress level of the 44 ETSU dental hygiene students reported on a 1-10 scale was a 7.65. Nearly half (40%) of all ETSU dental hygiene students currently enrolled reported their stress level as 8 out of 10 with 10 defined as “I can only think of my stress and anxiety”. Further research including an educational intervention to help teach students skills and coping mechanisms to manage and reduce stress and anxiety was recommended.

Kinder als Begleitpersonen in Notaufnahmen: Übertragbarkeit von kindgerechten Gestaltungskonzepten auf Zentrale Notaufnahmen

In Zentralen Notaufnahmen (ZNA) stellen Kinder als Begleitperson von erwachsenen Patient:innen keine Hauptnutzergruppe dar und werden in der gestalterischen Planung wenig berücksichtigt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden Gestaltungskonzepte aus Wartebereichen in pädiatrischen Krankenhäusern untersucht und ihre Übertragbarkeit auf ZNA geprüft. Dafür wurden die räumlichen Ansprüche von Kindern an ihre Umgebung betrachtet. Zur Beantwortung der Frage, welche Gestaltungskonzepte übertragbar sind, wurden Bewertungskriterien für stress- und angstmindernde Maßnahmen aus der aktuellen Fachliteratur herausgearbeitet. Darauf aufbauend wurden die Anforderungen von pädiatrischen Patient:innen definiert. Anhand von Praxisbeispielen aus dem europäischen Raum wurde die architektonische Umsetzung dieser Literaturkriterien analysiert. Die Umsetzbarkeit in ZNA wurde im Anschluss bewertet und Gestaltungsempfehlungen formuliert. Die Datenerhebung zeigt, dass Kinder besondere Ansprüche an ihre Umgebung stellen, die in gestalterischen Prozessen wenig berücksichtigt werden. Eine architektonische Gestaltung, die positive Ablenkung und Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten bietet, verbessert die Wartesituation für Kinder als Begleitpersonen.

Can mindfulness enhance connectedness with nature? The case of in-depth nature experiences with adolescents

This thesis is an exploratory look into the use of mindfulness practice on in-depth nature experiences to determine if the practice has benefit to the participant, their outdoor experience, and overall connectedness with nature. An original research project examined three groups of adolescents from St. Michaels University School Outdoor Education program in Victoria, BC, Canada, as they hiked the Juan de Fuca trail. Two of the three groups undertook a simple mindfulness protocol to explore the outcomes. Based on participant-observation and interviews, mindfulness practice was determined to be a useful practice towards alleviating stress and anxiety associated with aspects of in-depth outdoor experiences, such as morning preparations. Participants who practiced mindfulness on the trip asked fewer questions about the future and remained present more often than those who did not practice mindfulness. A further finding was that there are aspects of mindfulness inherent in in-depth nature experiences, such as sitting around a fire. These inherent mindfulness moments should be encouraged as they provide benefit to trip experiences, and potentially towards greater connectedness with nature. Overall, this qualitative study suggests that mindfulness is a useful tool for the benefit of human well-being and nature connection. However, more research is needed to further identify the magnitude and mechanisms of the benefit. / Graduate
