<b>Twisting the Narrative: How Netflix's </b><b><i>The Midnight Club </i></b><b>and the Conventions of Horror Capture the nspoken Side of Cancer</b>Laney Kaitlan Blevins (18430323) 25 April 2024 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">When diagnosed with cancer, it is not uncommon for patients to turn to narratives—both fiction and non—looking for comfort or a way to make sense of their situation. When it comes to cancer on screen, we often see a romanticized version of cancer diagnosis: young sick kids falling in love, messages of going on to do amazing things after treatment, or visuals of glamorized sickness. This is not reflective of the dark thoughts that often find homes in the minds of cancer patients. And yet, little media exists to resonate with these darker narratives. Netflix’s The Midnight Club, a horror show catered toward young adults, helps to twist the pre-existing narratives surrounding cancer by utilizing the conventions of the horror genre to explore the darker sides of cancer diagnosis through storytelling. Though often uncomfortable, the show’s ability to discuss thoughts of mortality, pain, and loss in wake of terminal diagnosis is one important of discussion, as is done in this paper.</p>

High communication apprehension has several negative effects on affected persons. Students with high communication apprehension in particular experience low class participation, poor teacher-student relationships, and low grades. This study examined the effects of Fundamentals of Oral Communication (public speaking) classes on students ' communication apprehension compared to non-public speaking alternatives, Introduction to Communication. McCroskey's PRCA-24 was distributed as a pre- and post-test, and the data was analyzed using a repeated measures design. Limitations and future study implications are discussed.

This thesis examines the use of irony in Joyce’s Portrait, claiming that it has the effect of deconstructing common notions of maturity that are engrained within the Bildungsroman tradition, and that this was Joyce’s intention. In Portrait, irony plays the role of psychological reality, undercutting Stephen’s unrealistic expectation to see his life follow a traditional path of teleological progression. This essay proceeds by looking at the novel’s symbolic, thematic and literary cues, as well as through an analysis of its structure, and Stephen’s psychological and behavioral tendencies throughout the novel. This interpretation of the irony as bearing deconstructive meaning comes from the essay adopting a static, as opposed to a kinetic, apprehension of Stephen in Portrait.

Communication Apprehension Among Community College Students: A PhenomenologyBragg, John R., Jr. 01 May 2017 (has links)
A qualitative investigation was conducted to explore the phenomenon of communication apprehension among a purposeful sample of five community college students with high levels of communication apprehension. The phenomenon of Communication Apprehension (CA) is “an individual’s level of fear or anxiety associated with either real or anticipated communication with another person or persons” (Beatty, McCroskey, & Heisel, 1998, p. 197; McCroskey, 1970, p. 269). All individuals experience some level of CA, and between 30% and 40% of individuals are estimated to experience high levels of CA. For the community college student with high levels of CA, the introductory communication course can be difficult, causing significant emotional and physical distress. For the high CA student, the experienced anxiety has academic, social, and emotional implications. A phenomenological qualitative methodology was selected to give voice to the high CA student and to understand the lived experience of high CA during the introductory communication course. This study provides a rich, thick description of the lived experience of the high CA community college student.
A purposeful sample of five high CA community college students enrolled in the introductory communication course was selected. Participants were identified as high CA using the Personal Report of Public Speaking Apprehension (PRPSA) (McCroskey, 2017). Study participants were selected as follows: those with high levels of CA as determined by the PRPSA instrument, and who were willing to offer insight into the lived experience of high CA. Data were gathered in two 50-minute interviews with each participant and from participatory action research (PAR) personal diaries created by study participants. Data were also gathered from field observations by the primary investigator.
The lived experience of high CA is comprised of seven themes: (1) ongoing and pervasive difficulty, (2) ongoing curricular and co-curricular difficulty, (3) no division exists between real and imagined CA, (4) high CA students frequently avoid anxiety-inducing scenarios, and (5) high CA students have not been effectively equipped with mitigating techniques and in turn, use self-developed mitigation. The study is significant because it contributes to the body of knowledge related to CA for the high CA community college student.

<p>The purpose of the study was, with initial position from two particular youth homes, to survey the staff’s experiences regarding different youth cultures that might occur at the institutions and how they react to them. The question formulations were as follows: What kind of youth cultures might occur at the institution and how are they being expressed, according to some of the staff members? How do the same staff members, individually, see their role and prospect to influence the type of youth culture that is developing on the institution? Earlier research in the field were used as theoretical starting positions as well as the concepts of “looking-glass self“, “the generalized other” and ”the overtaking of roles” in the symbolic-interactionism. Qualitative research interviews were carried through with three of the employees at the two youth homes and the results of the study evinced that both positive and negative youth cul-tures develops at both of the institutions, concluding the fact that youths affect each other both ways. The results of the positive culture is that the youths identifies themselves with other youths, support each other and by comprehending more might change their attitude toward different matters. The negative culture might be expressed with youths who bring their trou-bles to the institution, youths who discuss divergent subjects within the group, exposure to bad influence which leads to negative behaviour. Henceforth, the personnel considered that they have a propitious potential to influence the youths and the conditions between them. It was deemed crucial that the personnel group acted alike and kept a jointly approach toward the youths.</p>

Vårt syfte med den här studien är därför att:</p><p>• Ge vår bild av fastighetsmäklare.</p><p>• Skriva en debattartikel och få denna publicerad.</p><p>Genom att uppfylla ovanstående syfte vill vi besvara frågorna:</p><p>• Varför har fastighetsmäklare ett dåligt rykte?</p><p>• Vad kan göras för att förbättra ryktet?</p><p>Metod: Vi har utifrån ett hermeneutiskt synsätt skapat denna uppsats och därför låtit vår förförståelse och subjektivitet spegla innehållet. Data har samlats in genom att söka i litteratur, intervjuer och en mindre egen undersökning. This essay is divided into different chapters, but it doesn’t follow the traditional outline for essays.</p><p>Result & Conclusions: We have found four parties that have big influence on the reputation of Real Estate Agents; the public, media, Real Estate Agents and the organizations; Mäklarsamfundet, Fastighetsmäklarförbundet and Fastighetsmäklarnämnden. These four parties all have a great impact on the apprehension of individuals and their view of reality. Syfte: Redogöra för eventuellt användbara teorier då vi undersöker varför Handelsbanken samt Swedbank har valt att marknadsföra sig som de gör. Metod: För att uppnå vårt syfte har vi valt att ha en kvalitativ utgångspunkt i vår uppsats. Primärdata har samlats in genom personliga intervjuer med anställda på både handelsbanken samt Swedbank. Sekundärdata har samlats in från litteratur och vetenskapliga artiklar. Teoretisk referensram: Den teoretiska referensramen har byggts upp kring relevanta teorier och modeller som har anknytning till profilering av marknadsföringsstrategier. Empiri: Primärdata har samlats in genom personliga intervjuer med kontorschefer på handelsbanken och ansvarig personal för marknadsföringsavdelningen i Swedbank, alla intervjuer har genomförts i Stockholm. Resultat: Det resultat som har nåtts efter att uppsatsen har avslutats är att Handelsbanken marknadsför sig lokalt samt att Swedbank marknadsför sig genom stora kommunikationskanaler för att nå ut till alla konsumenter.

This study describes the personal experience of heath care workers after a needle stick injury. The process of enquiry is embedded in a post modernistic ecosystemic perspective to elicit common themes in the health care workers’ (HCW) experiences of a Needle stick injury (NSI). Themes that emerged related mainly to the participants experience after having had a NSI. In the HCW environment HIV/AIDS is very well known disease. It is ironic that the HCW system at large is in denial regarding the dangers which the HCW’s face on a day to day basis working in a ‘mine field’ where every patient is a potential life threat to the HCW. From an ecosystemic stance one can clearly see the ecological principle at play. The HCW system seems to be stuck in a negative feedback process as the status quo is maintained by the defence/coping mechanisms. Adaptation seems to be limited. This inability to compensate leads to the disillusionment of the HCW who has to use ‘acceptable’ defence/coping mechanisms to deal with the trauma of being threatened by HIV/AIDS. The researcher found it constructive to use psychodynamic language, as defence mechanisms are psychodynamic concepts, to describe the process of the HCW system. As Keeney (1983) said that we are not surrounded, in a world of opposition, but rather in a realm of both/and dichotomies. The one cannot exit without, nor be discarded for, the other.
