Predicting Future Heat-Related Mortality in Large Urban Areas in China Using GIS (Geographic Information System) and Epidemiological Approaches

Global climate change is anticipated to raise the overall temperatures and is likely to increase future mortality attributable to heat. China, a rapid developing nation with the world's largest population, has experienced noticeable changes in climate over the past century, with an annual increase in air temperature by 0.5-0.8°C. While increasing evidence is suggesting that climate change has posed significant health risks to Chinese population, including heat-related mortality, the extent to which climate change will affect future mortality and the sources of uncertainty in projecting prospective changes in mortality remain unexplored. Using GIS (Geographic Information System) and epidemiological approaches, this study estimates excess future premature deaths in large urban areas in China resulting from potential increases in temperature under climate change. Our projection includes 51 large Chinese cities in this study, which cover approximately one third of the total population in China. We use ArcGIS to combine temperature predictions from climate models, local temperature-mortality relationship and population forecasting and project the future excess mortality attributed to higher temperature during warm season. The study focuses on future temperature change during 2040-2050 relative to the baseline period 1950-2000 in the 51 cities selected. For future temperature projection, we ensemble outputs from 19 climate models used in the IPCC 5th Report, including outputs related to all four AR5 emission scenarios (RCPs 2.6, 4.5, 6.0 and 8.5). The results of this study inform decision makers of the direct health benefits of climate mitigation.

Modeling larval connectivity among coral habitats, Acropora palmata populations, and marine protected areas in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) encompasses North America's only living coral barrier reef and the third longest barrier reef in the world, making it a unique national treasure of international notoriety (FKNMS, 2005). Recent evidence of environmental decline within the sanctuary has created a sense of urgency to understand and protect the valuable resources within. This thesis contributed to the understanding of habitat connectivity to aid managers and decision makers in the creation of additional Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the FKNMS to help prevent further environmental decline. This research specifically focused on modeling larval transport and larval connectivity among Acropora palmata (Lamarck, 1816) populations, coral habitats and MPAs in the upper and middle FKNMS. The transport of larvae in relation to ocean currents is a very limited area of research, and the analytic modeling results may serve as powerful guides to decisions about the relative importance of individual coral habitats and MPAs in the study area.Larval transport was modeled with ArcGIS and TauDEM using SoFLA-HYCOM simulated ocean currents during the A. palmata spawning season. This model allowed for the assessment of coral habitat and A. palmata population larval connectivity. The dependence of three distant A. palmata test populations on other upstream coral habitats and A. palmata populations significantly differed (Kruskal-Wallis test, P less than 0.0001). The clonally diverse Sand Island Reef A. palmata population's larval connectivity was significantly higher compared to other distant monoclonal populations (Mann-Whitney test, P less than 0.0001). Compared to the clonal structure of each test population determined by Baums, Miller, and Hellberg (2006), results indicated simulated larval connectivity may be a determinant of A. palmata population clonal diversity.By modeling MPA and coral habitat connectivity, this study also identified unprotected and distant coral habitat areas with the greatest downstream influence on MPAs; these may serve as potential coral larvae sources. It is recommended that establishing these areas as no-take MPAs would improve overall coral habitat and MPA network connectivity.

This work deals with the possibilities of laying and reverse lookup optical routes with the help of modern technology. Hereinafter, there are possibilities for documentation and registration of fiber optic lines. Speaking of thesis, it focuses on optical technology, advantages and disadvantages of this technology. Introduction focuses on fiber optic cable and related theoretical knowledge. Additionally, there are introduced comparisons with metallic lines. Another part is based on different searching methods for optical cables using metallic elements are analyzed in a detail. This section discusses galvanic and inductive methods. Subsequently, the thesis deals with searching for optical paths with the help of EMS (electronic marker system). Moreover, there are described individual types of electronic tags which are used in the installation of different kinds of lines. There are also briefly described seeker EMS markers, made by Dynatel. In addition to my work you can find the description of GPS (Global Positioning System) technology and routing the cable with the help of GPS system. Finally, possibility of documentation and evidence in the ArcGIS from ERSI and in the SPIDER-fiber from Gisoft is given. The overall functions of individual programs and their options are analyzed. The last section presents the implementation of laboratory tasks and programming burial markers, creating navigation in Urwigo and realisation with Openwing in Nokia phone. In the end of the work is map with markers positions.

This thesis deals with the flood control. In particular, the design of a set of small water reservoirs with retention effect (polders) and their effect on flood flows. The work is divided into two parts, the first part refers to the bachelor thesis. In this thesis is description of the catchment, rainfall-runoff process and the evaluation of the ratio. That was got the necessary information for the design of polders. This is an abbreviated repetition of the contents of the thesis, which is a continuation of this work. The second part deals with the specific design of two reservoirs, including hydro calculations and drawings. For this work were used ArcGIS - ArcMap, Hydrog and to create drawings AutoCAD 2010.

The second part describes and claculates soil loss in an area of Zasova and Zubri. For calculation is used programme ArcGis. Based on the resoults are suggested two ways of erosion kontrol measures. Their efficiency is proved in programme ArcGis and the resoults are compared.

Wildlife-vehicle collisions : An evaluation of the mitigation effect by ecoducts and fauna bridges in Sweden

The occurrence of wildlife vehicle collisions (WVCs) is an increasing problem in Sweden with a calculated increase of 45 percent from 2015 to 2022. The highest measured number of WVCs occurred in 2021 with over 67,000 reported incidents, where only the payment for the search of wounded animals were approximately 60 million Swedish crowns. The Swedish transport agency works actively with the problem by constructing several types of wildlife passages to mitigate the increasing problem, inter alia, ecoducts and fauna bridges.   The aim of this study was to evaluate the mitigation effect of wildlife passages, in this case ecoducts and fauna bridges. In addition, were also the spatial extent of the mitigation effect together with the relationship between mitigation effect and the annual daily traffic (ADT) evaluated.   The evaluation of mitigation effect was conducted by the usage of several types of geographical information systems (GIS) tools in the software ArcGIS Pro. A selection of seven passages was made, based on several requirements and each passage was assigned a study area with an area of 100 square kilometers. The mitigation effect was initially determined by conducting an Emerging hot spot analysis, categorizing the result into showing trend of decrease or showing no trend of decrease. The spatial extent of the mitigating effect was evaluated through the Emerging hot spot results while the relation between ADT and WVCs was evaluated in an overlay analysis.   Two of the passages were concluded as to having a mitigating effect, three passages were concluded as to showing no mitigating effect and two passages were excluded from further evaluation due to high uncertainty in the results. At the passages with stated mitigating effect were the spatial extent of effect shown in the whole study area. The result showed no evident correlation between ADT and mitigating effects which led to further reflections on the degree of influence that ADT has on the occurrence of WVCs.
