Syncretic Souvenirs: An Investigation of Two Modern Indian Manuscripts

Helland, Madeline 01 January 2018 (has links)
The objective of this project was to establish a provenance for two Indian manuscripts that were recently discovered in the collections at Scripps College. Based on their illuminations, script, and binding structure, I was able to conclude that these two manuscripts are Hindu religious texts created around the 19th or 20th century. To determine an approximate origin and the significance of these volumes, my research focused on the syncretism of religion, material history, and power dynamics in India. Their context was specifically framed within the history of manuscript construction and conservation.

No. of bitstreams: 1 parte1.pdf: 6460448 bytes, checksum: c9c9f4dcce9c863fa23fe595d15fc0f7 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-09-26 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The main goal of this dissertation is to investigate the relation between the architectural production of Art Deco affiliation and João Pessoa urban network inception and expansion process in the years 1932-1955, based on the link between the architecture and city. This relation analysis is enhanced when it is understood that some innovations are only possible, and in some cases mandatory, if the place enables the building deployment. The research scope was delimited in seven areas considering the city occupied area until the beginning of 1950´s, developing seventeen setorial maps from the researched excerpts based on actual pictures from buildings under research, highlighting the reformed urban areas in the first half of the twentieth century. The Art Deco architectural manifestations are analyzed from the definition of six key criteria determining the architecture specifications and its relation with the city.

Quarteirão sucesso da cidade: o Art Déco e as transformações arquitetônicas na Fortaleza de 1930 e 1940 / The successful block of the city: Art-Déco and the architectural changes in Fortaleza during the 1930s and 1940s.

Marilia Santana Borges 12 January 2007 (has links)
This essay investigates the process of modernization of Fortaleza, in years 1930 and 1940, having as object the architectural transformations placed in the city, more specifically in its center, where the changes occurred with bigger resonance. GENIUS THEATRI, České Budějovice / GENIUS THEATRI, České Budějovice

Kůs, Martin January 2017 (has links)
Fragmented and heterogenous space of Mariánské náměstí needs a new unifying element that will not compete with its surroundings, and yet not blindly respectful. It will simply stand there and in time become a natural part of the area. Rough massive volumes with minimum of windows boldly face surrounding urban blocks. Its dynamic facades emphasize the opennes and chaos of the area. Rough raw boulders with single elegant crystal inserted amongst them. Like a diamond amongst coal. It is interconnected through bridges. People and life flows through the whole structure.

GENIUS THEATRI, České Budějovice / GENIUS THEATRI, České Budějovice

Čučka, Pavel January 2017 (has links)
České Budějovice struggles with unsuitable spaces for the Theatre and the Philharmonic. It is also confronted with urbanistic challenges of underused public spaces. This diploma thesis sets out to remedy these challenges and offer a possible solution through the design of Platform of live arts – opera and philharmonic halls at Mariánské náměstí. I approach this problematic area with an effort of creating a distinctive feature, that propagates new spatial relationships and changes the existing perception of space. The center of gravity, two performance halls, are placed in the utmost tip of the plot in confrontation with historical skyline of the old city. Counterweight of this expansive volume is a park, theatrical gardens at the opposite and. The idea is to preserve quality free space around which similar institutions might find their place in the future, thus creating a cultural oasis.

Nature Revealed Through the Built Environment: Re-envisioning the Clifford A. Phaneuf Environmental Center

Fiore, James W, Jr. 01 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The Clifford A. Phaneuf Environmental Center is home to ECOS, The Environmental Center for Our Schools, in Springfield Massachusetts. The ECOS program provides a chance for elementary and middle school students in Springfield public schools to experience and learn about the natural world. The built environment provides opportunities to teach about ecosystems and human connections to nature. A new design for the Clifford A. Phaneuf Environmental Center will teach students about the natural world experientially through the building’s own connections to the environment.

The Diaries of Käthe Kollwitz: 1916-1917

Provine, Carolyn 01 February 2023 (has links)
This thesis is a translation of and critical introduction to a seventeen-month excerpt of the World War I diaries of German artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945), a painter, printmaker, and sculptor. These diaries present a unique insight into Kollwitz’s life during the war and the process behind her art. The source text for this translation are entries from August 1, 1916, to December 31, 1917, as printed in the 2012 edition of the diaries prepared by the artist’s granddaughter, Jutta Bohnke-Kollwitz, and first published in full in 1989. The thesis also translates Bohnke-Kollwitz’s introduction to the published volume and her footnotes on the selected entries. The critical introduction to the translation discusses this excerpt in the historical context of World War I, addressing the relationship between the patriotic “spirit of 1914” and the cultural constraints on grieving mothers to largely mourn in silence, as Kollwitz did for her own fallen son Peter. This situates Kollwitz among intellectuals and intellectual women in Germany at the time, and follows Kollwitz’s transition from an initial pro-war stance to eventual anti-war activism as documented in the diaries. The introduction then discusses my translation strategy, which draws on functionalist theories of translation to develop an approach that foregrounds Kollwitz’s own voice as a writer and the nature of the text as a private document. This approach aligns with the intended function of this translation, which particularly values the diaries for their intimacy and for the insight they can give us onto Kollwitz’s inner experience during a tumultuous historical time.

Prado, Márcio Montoril 24 April 2018 (has links)
