Mapping the complexity of art exhibition: is it possible to evaluate it?

Valio, Luciana Benetti Marques 28 February 2008 (has links)
This research is an exploratory investigation of the evaluation practices applied to art exhibition. To do so, the study intends to contextualize art exhibition, considering the changes in art during the last four decades. It presents contemporary art as a system, showing the inter-relation among its elements. These elements were divided into chapters, in Part I, to describe each one, and, where possible, to confront one with the other: the loss of authority by the artist, who shares the authority with the spectator; the work of art is completed with the spectators participation; the spectator abandons a passive attitude and gets involved, participating and being part of the art work; the art market is a circulation agent of the art work, the art market makes it possible the confront the art work and the system dynamics; the art institutions becomes a space for interventions, part of the artistic manifestations; art criticism joins art practice assuming the production risks, while art history is kept in check and the art theory is claimed by the artists; the mediation between artwork and spectator is done by the curator, who works side-by-side with the artists practice and the educator, who facilitates the moment of aesthetic experience; at last, the exhibition is the synthesis of all these elements above, showing the interaction among the elements of the system at the exhibition space. Therefore, the complexity of the context where the exhibition is shown becomes emphasized, presenting the exhibition as a process, as a reflex of an unstable contemporaneity. The exhibition synthesizes the interaction among the elements of the system to constitute itself, turning into an expanding reflection about the context of contemporary art, in which the exhibition evaluation is part. The evaluation performed in the exhibition spaces focuses on the analysis of the public to improve the quality of the visit in the museum. A parallel analysis of social project evaluations makes it possible to build a broader view of how this management tool is used. Finally, the view of the art exhibition context is expanded; proposing a more critical attitude towards this context, showing that the evaluation of an exhibition is part of a larger complexity, which is the art system itself to which it belongs.

[en] Y GENERATION AND SPONTANEOUS EXPOSURE ON FACEBOOK / [pt] GERAÇÃO Y E A EXPOSIÇÃO VOLUNTÁRIA NO FACEBOOK

MARIO RUBENS DE OLIVEIRA CARNEIRO 25 February 2019 (has links)
[en] This study aimed to identify the main factors that influence the behavior of members of Generation Y on Facebook, with emphasis on the aspect of exhibition. The study was based on the theories of Generational Cohort and Social Networking Sites, as well as on the concepts of exhibition and privacy. Initially, a literature review and semi-structured interviews raised 49 relevant variables. Further, field data were collected through a questionnaire. The sample consisted of 473 individuals. The analysis used statistical techniques of Multivariate Factors Analyses followed by Linear Regressions. At the end, factors emerged: Adherence, Dependency, Egocentrism, Emotional Neediness, Fears, Repentance, Privacy, Popularity, Risk and Banalization; the first four of which proved capable of explaining 22,4 percent of the variation in the exposure degree of the respondents’ behavior. Finally, the study shows how the behavior of voluntary exposure of Generation Y on Facebook is determined based on aspects such as: degree of binding, affinity and emotional involvement of the users with the site; self-centered attitudes that reveal preferences by talking about itself; exhibition feelings seeking emotional support, and recognition of harm in using associated with the incapacity to abandonment. Thus, Generation Y shows a intensive, voluntary, affective and notion of rewarding use of the site. And the users which more expose themselves exhibit behaviors of routine use, with access by different channels and different places in search of the benefits of sharing, showing an option for exposing himself. This option is on one hand conscious and on the other hand may become inevitable.

From studies by Michel Foucault, and operating with the concepts of discourse and government, this Thesis problematizes the institution of the Biennial Art Exhibition of Mercosul as an educative context par excellence, which privileges the democratization of access to art through the actions it develops in accordance with requirements of inclusive policies in effect in Brazil. In order to analyze such context, the study has addressed nine issues of publications by the Mercosul Biennial Visual Arts Foundation published from 1997 to 2013. The analyses have shown that the encouragement to attend the Biennial Art Exhibition has been grounded on the promise that being in contact with art can add value to visitors, and it has been understood that changes are produced in the subjects that move around its exhibition rooms. Such promise points out that the relationships established between art and education in the Biennial Art Exhibition of Mercosul focus on the capitalization of the subjects, particularly school age individuals. To meet such expectations and the idea of interdependence, the Biennial Art Exhibition has been constituted as a heterogenic territory consisting of both entrepreneurial and (necessary) educative biases, among others. The approximation between the Biennial Art Exhibition and corporations has been triggered by the imperative of a so-called inclusive society, the democratization of accesses, the strengthening of the State-Corporation partnership, and the entrepreneurship of subjects and society by means of an increasing investment in human capital. The insertion of the Biennial Foundation in this intelligibility framework shows the bases of its purpose of forming the (self-entrepreneur) subject by means of educative projects that reverberate in investments in the quality of living of the population. It has been concluded that, by fostering the democratization of the access to art, regarding the subject as its focus of intervention, the Biennial Art Exhibition of Mercosul has become one more institutional place that teaches and keeps the flow of normality of the population, which has been politically instituted.

Developing an Exhibition Summative Evaluation Measurement

Unknown Date (has links)
In Taiwan, Curatorial companies hold more and more art exhibitions every year. Owing to the lack of human and financial resources, exhibition evaluation hasn’t developed maturely enough. However, exhibition is one of the ways of presenting art and evaluation would help curatorial team know how audiences evaluate the exhibition, what the exhibition’s effects are, and what the company’s brand image is in the market. Nowadays, curatorial companies use the number of visitors and evaluation questionnaires as the way of exhibition evaluation. Nevertheless, the evaluation questionnaires cannot assess the whole parts of exhibition’s effects and ignore the assessment of what the audiences experience in the exhibition. Therefore, this study uses Lauterborn’s 4C elements and Schmitt’s strategic experiential modules to develop the scale that combines audience’s cognition and experience in the exhibition. As for cases, the study uses Joan Miro Exhibition Women, Birds, Stars, held by Mediashpere and Museum of broken relationship, held by Kuang Hong Arts. And follow Devellis’s scale development steps, including item purification, construct validity analysis and reliability analysis to construct summative exhibition scale. Finally, the scale develops five parts, including consumer needs and wants, cost, communication, sense and community and action and the related nine layers and sub-layers.

Art group to art exhibition : personal stories of people with psychosocial disability

Qiao, Jie Qiong Unknown Date (has links)
The service for people with psychosocial disability is deeply influenced by the modern psychiatry, which tends to see the person as a diagnosis rather than a man / women. As the interpretation of mental illness is becoming more diverse, there comes some alternative treatment methods, which emphasize the individuality of people with psychosocial disability, using social structure orientation and strength-based thinking. The art group and art exhibition studied in this paper are also based on above philosophy. Through in-depth interviews with five people with psychosocial disability and visual assessment on their artworks, this study aims to understand their changing experience in the art group and art exhibition. This study starts with the life stories and artworks of the five interviewees, stressing them as unique individuals with own personality then thoughts rather than those imposed stereotypes of people with psychosocial disability. Based on the depth understanding of every interviewees, the study described their experience in the art group allowing them to feel peaceful and focused, and through art making they were able to express and develop awareness of self, hence promoting changes in self and relationships. The art group described in this study used nonstructural working method, which allowed the group leader and social workers to become closer to the inner world of people with psychosocial disability. With time, shared self-experiences emerged among the art group members, and the group started to evolve towards more social participation in ways of art exhibition. The art exhibition provided them a platform for real interaction with the society, for formulation of new identity, for opportunities to learn interpersonal skills and emotion control, and for diminishing stigmatization through emotional empathy. Keywords: people with psychosocial disability, personal stories, art group, art exhibition
