Through the lens : using auto-driven photo-elicitation to capture the development of career aspirations of business management and fine art students

Turley, Helene January 2018 (has links)
The uniqueness of this study is primarily in the application of a visual research methodology to generate knowledge and understanding in an area that is often associated with quantitative research. Careers and employment research typically focuses on statistical information which can provide general information but does not give an in-depth understanding of the area under study. Visual research can give an in-depth understanding; in addition to giving access to a different kind of knowledge, supported by Harper (2002) who proposes “that images can evoke deeper elements of human consciousness than words alone.” I explore the various ways in which students perceive and develop different career aspiration including what motivates and what might inhibit students’ development of their career aspirations. This understanding will enhance my professional practice and encourage the Careers and Employment department within the University to adapt their service and give students the relevant tools and information to prepare them for employment. A visual research methodology is utilised as this fits comfortably with my background in art and gives the in-depth knowledge I require for my research (see Clark-Ibáñez, 2004; Collier (1957); Collier and Collier, 1986; Cousin, 2009; Guillemin and Drew, 2010; Harper, 2002; Harris and Guillemin, 2012 and O’Brien, 2013 for further information on the benefits of using a visual research methodology). Auto-driven photo-elicitation (ADPE) is used with six fine art and six business management students. These students often have less career direction and tend to struggle to secure graduate level positions (Swani, 2016); in addition, the two subject areas were chosen because they are a contrast in terms of how their curriculum is delivered. Using visual research to inform careers and employment is unique and through sharing my research and research experience I want to initiate a shift in how careers and employment research is approached in the future. In addition to the uniqueness of using a visual research methodology in careers and employment my findings indicate there are five orientations business management and fine art students’ use when developing their career aspirations: a strong sense of direction, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, weak planning and dreams. This research discusses the five orientations and the factors that might contribute to a rich learning environment for career building. Subject and professional identity are discussed in relation to identity formation and career building. Four main sources of identity formation are identified: identity through being (transition from study to profession), identity through self-discovery, identity through belonging (concerning the informal and cultural aspects of community life), and identity through peripheral participation (activities that are akin to peripheral participation in a professional community). This research establishes there is a relationship between the development and building of identity and self-efficacy through belonging, professional experience and working alongside mentors when developing strategies to develop career aspirations.

Les chinois en Algérie : un nouveau paradigme d’immigration : le cas des commerçants chinois / The Chinese in Algeria : a new paradigm of immigration : the case of Chinese traders

Hammou, Samia 04 December 2017 (has links)
This thesis addresses the evolution of the concept of the foreigner in a country of emigration through the example of Chinese traders in Algeria. The definition of the foreigner which for a long time dominated the discipline of the sociology of immigration since the beginning of the nineteenth century is no longer the same today because it no longer meets the current context. The evolution of representations against foreign countries is due to the change in the aspirations of the foreigner himself, who is looking for new opportunities. It is no longer a question of foreigners representing a labor force in the context of economic immigration. We are faced with a foreigner who emigrates with his money for a specific purpose that is to say to undertake and sometimes even create employment for the benefit of the premises. Thus, abroad, by its aspirations, creates a dynamic of representations that allows the coexistence of pre-established representations and those relating to coexistence and social relations. The development of representations with regard to the foreigner integrates a modernization of this concept. Nevertheless, some representations refer to stereotypes and prejudices that are sometimes anchored in society and which become myths, notably on the Chinese product. Nevertheless, things change with respect to the perception of the Chinese personality which is on the contrary appreciated and sometimes considered as an example of success. This research allows us to understand that we are facing a paradigm shift in the study of the phenomenon of migration and that it is necessary to develop new concepts to analyze this new type of foreigners

A Study on the Aspirations of Women Teachers to Become School Administrators

Sloan, Florence Wolff 08 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this study is concerned is that of the gross under representation of females in educational administrative positions. Answers to the following questions were sought. (1) What are the reasons there are not more female administrators in education? (2) What are the reasons that more female educators do not aspire to become administrators? (3) What are effective means by which capable female educators can be encouraged to qualify themselves for positions in educational administration? Findings showed that the participants perceived that administrators are drawn from a predominantly male candidate pool and that women are not encouraged to compete for administrative jobs by their school district administrators. Most effective means for encouraging women to become administrators were encouragement by various people who have personal contact with the teacher, provision of role models, awareness of opportunities through on-the-job work, appointment of women to legitimate rather than token administrative positions, provision of financial encouragement, and administrative internship programs. Conclusions included (1) Women teachers do not perceive that women have chosen administration as a career field to the extent that men have. (2) Women teachers do not perceive women as lacking in ability to become administrators. (3) People who have personal contact with a woman teacher can greatly influence her. (4) Most of the reasons given why women are not and do not aspire to be administrators were not determined to be of great impact when considered individually in this study.

Exploring Outlooks of First-Generation Latino Parents: Factors Contributing to the College Preparation Process of Their Children

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Communication between parents and school personnel plays a significant role in student achievement. Spanish-speaking parents are rather hesitant to seek assistance from their child’s school as cultural and language barriers have created a mindset that they are not supported, understood, or valued. Key stakeholders in education therefore need to acquire a clearer understanding of the Latino culture in a dire effort to better serve Hispanic students in high school and their families. This study examined the perceptions of first-generation Latino parents of high school students while identifying parental needs to improve their child’s college readiness upon completion of high school. It also investigated high school graduation rates and student dropout rates across the United States as well as effective and efficient ways in which the school can enhance the provision of school-related resources to their students. There is wide consensus that parental involvement (including home-based involvement, home-school communication, and school-based involvement) is essential for student success. Despite this understanding, there exists a gap in literature regarding the information, resources, and support available to first-generation Latino parents with children in high school. Using a conceptual framework that draws on theories of cultural and social capital, and a qualitative approach that included field notes, focus groups, and interviews, this study investigated the expectations, lived experiences, perceptions, and practices of 29 Latino immigrant parents of high school students in relation to their child’s secondary school. The findings of this study, which suggest varying levels of parental involvement, were organized around four themes: aspirations, parental support, school-based knowledge, and student preparation. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Administration and Supervision 2016

(De)construyendo ilusiones. Cambios intergeneracionales y de género en las aspiraciones educativas y ocupacionales en las zonas rurales de Ayacucho

Mena Portocarrero, Magrith 10 April 2018 (has links)
To make a wish. Educational and occupational aspirations in two generations of rural children, in Ayacucho (Peru) This paper presents a genealogy of educational and occupational aspirations, based on the desires of two generations of rural children of Ayacucho. Taking the region’s recent turbulent and violent history into account, and other recent structural social changes, the research shows how the aspirations change between both generations, paying special attention to gender differences. Terciary education becomes the most wanted future, while peasant activities almost disappear from desired future lives / in addition, in poorer households girls keep higher aspirations than their male peers. Despite all this, hard evidence shows that tertiary education is rarely reached in Ayacucho, and women still have less opportunity to access and finish secondary and tertiary education. Therefore, this genealogy of desires not only should be seen as a social construction, but also as an expression of voice and agency, where social hierarchies are questioned.
