This research aimed to study the foraging activity of the grass-cutter ant Atta bisphaerica, emphasizing trail formation and maintenance as well as workers polimorphism and load transport influenced by seasonality. This investigation also had the purpose of searching for a bait attractant more efficient than citrus pulp (the attractant in commercial baits) to improve the granulated bait acceptance by this species of leaf-cutting ants. The number and the length of trails, the number of trail bifurcations, the foraging area and the number of nest entrance holes, active or not, were counted during 12 months. Results indicated that seasonality greatly affects foraging of this species. During the dry season of the year, trails are longer and more numerous than during the rainy season. Many instances of obstruction of the active nest entrance holes were found, resulting in their reduction in number along the rainy season, specially from October to March. To study the effect of the season on worker polimorphism and vegetal transportation, 200 workers were individually collected with their respective loads at two month intervals during the year. Their cutting bahavior was also observed. Results of the analyses indicated that worker polimorphism is influenced by seasonality and that they exhibit selectivity for load size during the whole year. It was also observed that the worker which cuts the grass fragment is the same individual that transports it to the nest. Retrieval of bait granules was evaluated, to compare baits manufactured in the lab with jaraguá-grass (Hyparrhenia rufa), sugar cane, white flour and the commercial baits without active ingredient. These last baits were also compared to baits made of filter- paper and impregnated with a jaraguá-grass non-volatile extract, with methanol and a blank and showed little ness attractive. Results have indicated that baits made of jaraguá-grass were always the most attractive, followed by baits of sugar cane. Commercial granulated baits had both mass and diameter inadequate for transportation by this ant species; they also show low attractiveness.

The social wasp Mischocyttarus cassununga occurs in the southeast of Brazil, Bahia and Santa Catarina and presents independent foundation, by means of an inseminated female or an association of them, where individuals' social function determined by dominance interactions. The aim of this work was to characterize the development of the immature stages and to analyze oophagy occurrence during the pre and post-emergency phases and its relation with the climatic factors, besides to identify and to relate dominance interactions with the foraging activity and to verify the α female participation in foraging activities control of M. cassununga in the pre and post-emergency phases in antropized environment. The study was accomplished in Juiz de Fora from july/2008 to june/2009, through weekly mappings in 60 colonies and of 150h of videotape in five colonies. The average duration of the immature stages in the pre and post-emergency phases went of 13,2 ±4,2 (6-24) and 14,4 ±5,2 (6-28) days for egg, 34,8 ±11,9 (15-69) and 32,2 ±7,7 (18-55) for larvae and 17,4 ±6 (7-29) and 18,5 ±5,3 (6-29) for pupae, respectively. There was no difference on the duration among development phases and seasons. The average registered of the egg phase until the adult emergency belonged to 65 days. There was more oophagy in pre than in post-emergence (x2=11,852; P=0,007) and difference for the reason between oophagy/cells (U=58; P=0,023). There was more oophagy at the rainy season (x2=53,878; P<0,001). For etogram, there were described five dominance acts and four of subordination. The α female remained in the first rank position, with dominance behaviors larger frequency in the pre (U=3; P=0,047) and in the post (U=3; P=0,047). There was correspondence between Dominance's Index and Matrix in 4 of the 5 colonies for the α female position that joined less of the foraging activities than the others in the pre (x2=63,131; P<0,001) and in the post (x2=51,882; P<0,001). The exits were influenced by the α female in the pre (x2=10,652; P=0,001) and in the post (x2=52,509; P<0,001). The numbers of returns originating of foragers exits with carbohydrate collection was superior to the others resources in the post (x2=38; P<0,001) and the α female had participation in all returns with resources. They were identified foragers different routes to the return to the colony with resources collected in the forage. Therefore, It was verified that the α female induces the foragers exits and controls them returns to the colony.

On the development and maintenance of a social wasp colony, need to search and use environmental resources, as the water, used in the control of the temperature; vegetable fiber, utilized on the construction and repair of cells and comb; carbohydrate to feeding larvae and adults, obtained mainly in nectary and fruits; and animal protein, used to feeding larvae, proceeding, most of the time, to predation of caterpillar. On this way, the study of the forage schedule, material foraged and to transfers colonies to other areas, using the species Polistes versicolor as test, objectives of this study, can evidence characteristics of the species that reveal its potential in programs that aiming its use as agent control of eucalyptus plagues. On the period of January to December of 2007, were accomplished 24 observations of the P. versicolor foraging activity colonies were present in an eucaliptal, on the municipal district of Juiz de Fora, MINAS GERAIS, totalizing 240 hours. During 10 hours were registered, to every 30 minutes, intensity light, wind speed, air humidity and temperature on the colony proximities; also were registered and qualified, the workers' returns according to methodology proposal for Prezoto et al. (1994). On the same period, were transferred 20 P. versicolor colonies, in post-emergency, retreats of human constructions and transferred for artificial shelters installed in eucalyptus plantation. The P. versicolor foraging activity began about the seven hours and thirty minutes and it extended even 18 hours. The workers average of departures/hour were 9.62 ±16.67 (0-84) with a total of 1792 on 240 hours observation, and returns/hour 9.76 ±18.14 (0-87) with a total of 1809 on the observation hours. The colonies activity pick happened on the period understood between the 10 hours and even 15 hours. The Spearman correlation test revealed that the P. versicolor workers exits were stimulated by the increase of the light intensity and air temperature; and decrease of the humidity. The multivariate linear regression analysis showed that air temperature is the variable that most influence on the P. versicolor foraging activity. On this work was registered 1809 returns, being 51.63% were with nectar; 6.85% water; 4.7% vegetable fiber; 19.40% unproductive and 17.41% with preys. P. versicolor workers preying exclusively caterpillars, being this only animal protein offered to the immature ones that were developed in the colony. The 20 P. versicolor colonies used in the work was collected and transferred with 85% of success, due to the fact of after the establishment of the colony in the artificial shelter, the individuals stayed in the nest. The present study revealed that P. versicolor offered characteristics that make possible its use in programs of handling integrated plagues using wasps as agents of biological control.
