História natural e performance larval de Oospila pallidaria (Schaus, 1897) (Lepidoptera, Geometridae, Geometrinae): uma mariposa esmeralda do Cerrado / Natural history and larval performance of the Oospila pallidaria (Schaus, 1897) (Lepidoptera, Geometridae, Geometrinae): a emerald moth of Cerrado.

Lopes, Bruno de Sousa 23 May 2016 (has links)
It is estimated 90.000 species of insects for the Cerrado, the second largest Brazilian biome, with great diversity of habitats and rich fauna. Among these insects, Lepidoptera represents about 10% of all species. However, studies on their immature stages (egg, larvae and pupae) are incipient for the biome, mostly on moths, whose natural histories of many species are unknown. The lack of these studies makes the multitrophic interactions in that these organisms are involved ignored and, therefore, prevent future studies related to their role in communities and ecological networks. This is the case of many species of Geometridae, including Oospila pallidaria, which is an emerald moth (due to emerald green color of their wings). Oospila pallidaria is a herbivorous species that had not published any information on their biology and factors that influence their occurrence, such as: the phenology of the host plant, which can determine the time of better conditions for growth and reproduction; the nutritional quality of food resources (e. g. amount of water and nitrogen), which can determine what resources provide better development/performance to a herbivore; natural enemies, that could restrict the occurrence of herbivores and the temperature and rainfall, which can change the quality and geographical distribution of food resources used by herbivores. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to describe, for the first time, aspects of the biology and natural history of O. pallidaria (Chapter 1) and to assess their larval performance from different diets (Chapter 2). The results presented in Chapter 1 showed that eggs of O. pallidaria, green and lasting an average of seven days, were lonely and laid especially in trichomes of mature leaves. The larvae fed on mature leaves predominantly, but used young leaves and flower buds opportunistically. Larvae had cryptic coloration, they camouflaged among the leaves of Mimosa setosa (Leguminosae: Mimosoideae), a single host, and developed the self-cleaning behavior. There are five larval instars, with color ranging from yellow to green. The larvae also had a pair of projections on prothorax and brown midline in the dorsal region. The maximum length of the larvaes body was 28 mm. The pupae were predominantly green, with a maximum of 10 mm in length. The development from egg to adult lasted about 50 days ( = 42, S = 6, n = 11). Their only natural enemy recorded was the microhymenopteran Cotesia sp. (Braconidae, Microgastrinae). Oospila pallidaria females produced 65 eggs on average (S = 7.07; n = 2). The occurrence of O. pallidaria was seasonal and overlapped on the peak presence of mature leaves. Larvae were negatively related to temperature and rainfall, with statistical significance only for the first (r = - 0.5889, P < 0.05). In Chapter 2, it was shown that mature leaves of M. setosa were the only food source available throughout the year. The flower buds were the resource with higher nutritional quality (relative water content and total nitrogen), followed by young and mature leaves respectively. However, the survival of O. pallidaria was greater with mature leaves. The results indicate that for the specialist herbivore O. pallidaria, the host plant phenology is critical for its survival, especially the presence of mature leaves of M. setosa. On the other hand, the flower buds are ephemeral resources, but important for the survival of the last instar larvae in the dry season, when mature leaves are withered and/or senescent.

Mischocyttarus is a genus of eusocial wasps belonging to the Polistinae subfamily, of importance to studies such as the origin and evolution of social behavior. They build nests without envelopes, making it easier to take notes and follow the growth of the nest, allowing the observation of oviposition, development of the eggs, larvae and pupae, as well as the addition of new cells to the nest and hierarchical conflicts among adults. Mischocyttarus cerberus styx and Mischocyttarus cassununga are representatives of a genus and tribe that occur only in the Americas and these species happen to occur in the municipality of Rio Claro (SP). Being a wasp genus of tropical and subtropical climates, colonies in all development phases can be found throughout the year. In this sense, the present work aimed to follow the development of colonies and to study the phenology of both species, in order to develop a comparative approach of internal and external factors that interact with the colony cycle, to verify if the species show similar or diverse profiles from each other. Four locations were chosen to represent the sampling at the Universidade Estadual Paulista campus of Rio Claro, SP. The period of data collection ranged from April 2014 to April 2015, with the mapping and behavioral observations of selected colonies, as well as monthly scanning to detect active colonies. M. cerberus styx showed a more irregular profile of productivity along the four seasons, presenting in general the greatest values on summer and the lowest values on winter. M. cassununga, on the other hand, seemed to have a more stable rhythm of productivity, with less discrepancy between seasons, demonstrating a better performance concerning cold seasons, with the greatest productivity values on spring and the lowest values on fall. Productivity of all immature stages of M. cerberus styx showed significant statistical correlation with air temperature and rainfall. For M. cassununga, immature productivity showed significant statistical correlation with air temperature and humidity, except for pupae, showing significant correlation with rainfall. Both species showed a similar pattern of immature development (eggs, larvae and pupae) with the shortest period corresponding to summer and the longest period corresponding to winter. The incidence of oophagy and larvae ejection coincided with the period of greatest productivity, probably linked to other factors. To add, nests in post-emergence (post-male) phase showed greater values of oophagy and larvae ejection for both species. As stated before in other studies, both species are assynchronical in relation to the seasons of the year and showed sinantropism, nesting in artificial and natural substrates. The Multiple Linear Regression models indicated air temperature as a major factor of influence on the variation of active colonies, but only significantly correlated to post-emergent M. cassununga colonies. Parasitoids of the Ichneumonidae family were observed in colonies of M. cerberus styx as well as of the Phoridae family for both species. Predation events by ants were observed for M. cassununga colonies, as well as birds for both species. Only very few events of conflict were observed and stated, being only an indication of influence to the progression of the colony cicle. / CNPq: 134541/2014-6

Se o período de isolamento fosse grande o bastante, as espécies poderiam então passar por eventos de especiação, se tornando novas espécies / Abstract: Many aspects and details of the origin, evolution and biogeographical patterns of butterflies are not yet fully comprehended. The phylogenetic relationships among most butterfly groups remained unknown until recently. Phylogenetic studies have been based mainly on morphological characters of adults, although characters of immature stages had increased in use and importance nowadays, specially due to their capacity of been informative where adult characters are not enough. There are few studies that use these characters either to phylogeny or classification of the butterflies. Besides the lack of information about the common ancestry of butterflies, there are also gaps to be filled about the biogeographical patterns, primarily related to the historical biogeography. In the neotropics, the planet's most biodiverse region, the study of origin and biogeography of most groups of organisms, including butterflies, is a subject of great interest. This because most of these groups are poorly understood concerning their evolutionary histories and shed light on some of these histories would lead us toward the comprehension of this huge Neotropical diversity. Despite being one relatively well known group, the genus Actinote (Nymphalidae: Heliconiinae) still lacks studies in phylogeny to solve the internal relationships of this group. It also lacks studies that seek to understand the distributional patterns of the group in the Neotropical region and which factors were responsible for the high diversity of Actinote in the southeast region of South America. In the present study we carried out three phylogenetic analyses based on morphology, with 34, 31 and 29 táxons respectively. In all analyses the majority of the clades were supported by homoplasies, although some groups of few species were maintained apparently the same in all the analyses supported by synapomorphies. Despite the fact that many discussions point out to a great importance in the use of immature characters to help solving the common ancestry relationships of butterflies, in the present work these characters were not very informative to elucidate the relations of this group, although they have a great taxonomic value, being helpful in the identification of the majority of species. This is probably due to a great intraspecific variation and a lower congruency with the adults' characters which would make it harder to use these characters to try and solve the evolutionary relationships of this particular group. Some authors claim that this difficulty could be a result of a rapid diversification during the evolutionary history of these species, restricting the morphological differentiation. The biogeographical analysis was carried out with the program Reconstructing Ancestral States in Phylogeny (RASP). According to the optimal biogeographical hypothesis, the distribution pattern observed could be explained by 41 dispersal, six vicariant and three extinction events. The analysis pointed out to a spread distributed ancestor of Altinote and Actinote, occupying the Andes and the Serra do Mar, in southeast Brazil. A vicariant event had isolated the ancestor lineage of Altinote in the Andes and the ancestor lineage of Actinote in the southeast of South America. The vicariant events could be related to climatic changes, what makes sense to this particular group, which is typical of cold high altitude habitats. According to this hypothesis, during the glacial periods the species of high altitude habitats could disperse and reach low altitude habitats. When the temperatures got higher in the interglacial periods these species were trapped in high altitude places, of lower temperature, and became isolated. If this isolation period lasted long enough, the species could pass through speciation events, turning into new species / Mestrado / Ecologia / Mestre em Ecologia

Larvální morfologie tribu Goliathini (Coleoptera: Cetoniinae) a její využití při studiu fylogeneze zlatohlávků. / Larval morphology of Goliathini (Coleoptera: Cetoniinae) and its contribution towards the understanding of the group's evolution.

Kouklík, Ondřej January 2017 (has links)
1 Abstract Currently there are almost 4000 described species of rose chafers (Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae) but larvae of less than 200 species are described. In this work we studied larval morphology of 86 species belonging to 58 genera with focus on the tribe Goliathini. The larvae of 21 genera were studied for the first time. 77 morphological characters on head, mouth parts, legs and thoracal and abdominal segments were studied. This resulted into large matrix of morphological characters, which were further tested in separate phylogenetical analyses. A checklist of studied characters and their states and also large databasis of photographs of the characters are also amongst the results of the thesis. Five independent datasets were tested, three were based singly on morphology, one on molecular sequences and one on a combined dataset. The phylogenetic analysis was made by three methods, maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and bayesian interference. Eleven different phylogenetic trees were obtained as a result, based on which we tried to reconstruct the relationships between the inner groups of Cetoniinae with focus on relationship of subtribes of tribe Goliathini. Monophyly of the tribe Goliathini as well as some other groups could not be confirmed, as well as the alleged basal position of the genus...

Studies on populational dynamic and immature stage vertical distribution in soybean canopy are very important to improve technology application and control timing. We studied population dynamics and vertical distribution of eggs and larvae of the velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis and two Plusiinae species, during the cycle of two soybean cultivars of different growth habits in three sowing dates. Experiments were conducted on Coodetec 206 and BMX Potência RR cultivars during the 2010/2011 growing season in Ponta Grossa, Paraná state. Samples were collected through the crop cycle. Eggs and caterpillars from each third of the plant (bottom, middle and upper) and on different plant structures (main stem, branches, pods and adaxial or abaxial surfaces of leaves) were quantified. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis analysis. Plusiinae species occurred simultaneously with A. gemmatalis, which was the predominant species. Highest densities of eggs and larvae of A. gemmatalis were recorded during the second half of January and February. In February we observed the highest densities of Plusiinae. Through the late sowing season we recorded the highest densities of immature stages of Noctuidae. The highest eggs densities for A. gemmatalis and Plusiinae occurred in the middle third (44.03% and 45.99%, respectively) of the canopy followed by the lower (31.96% and 34.18%) and upper portion (24.01% e 19.83%). Small larvae of A. gemmatalis were found mainly in middle (44.08%) and lower third of the plant (36.97%), while medium larvae occurred in higher density in the middle (42.86%) and upper (41.90%) stratum. Meanwhile, most of the large larvae are found in the upper portion of the canopy (63.41%). Highest densities of small, medium and large Plusiinae larvae, we found in middle (43.37%, 44.63% e 44.83%, respectively) and lower (49.46%, 31.40% e 31.03%) third of the canopy. Eggs and caterpillars were found mainly on the abaxial surface of leaflets.

Characterizing the populaton biology and life history of Speyeria adiaste clemencei

Zaman, Khuram 01 January 2014 (has links)
In this thesis, the life history and population biology of an endemic and declining California butterfly, Speyeria adiaste clemencei (Comstock, 1925) is described from Chews Ridge, Monterey Co., CA. S. a. clemencei can be successfully reared on commercially available Viola spp., facilitating captive rearing for restoration. Larvae of S. adiaste can be distinguished morphologically from sympatric S. callippe and S. coronis larvae based upon coloration of the dorsal and dorsolateral scoli, head capsule coloration, and coloration of setae, facilitating identification in the field. Adequate access to nectar sources throughout the flight period, especially during drought years, as well as host plant density and distribution, are critical aspects for maintaining viable S. a. clemencei populations. To gain a better understanding of its population biology, three seasons of weekly Pollard walk counts and two seasons of mark recapture (MR) were conducted. The population declined during the study period, which may be associated with decreasing rainfall. MR estimates were very strongly correlated with weekly Pollard walk counts. Differences in habitat use between the sexes were observed, with males showing a slight preference for ridge over meadow plots, whereas females preferred meadow plots containing Viola host plants. Analysis of survival and dispersal indicated this species is relatively short-lived with low dispersal ability, two traits associated with its life history that have important implications for re-colonization dynamics and population structure.

The social wasp Mischocyttarus cassununga occurs in the southeast of Brazil, Bahia and Santa Catarina and presents independent foundation, by means of an inseminated female or an association of them, where individuals' social function determined by dominance interactions. The aim of this work was to characterize the development of the immature stages and to analyze oophagy occurrence during the pre and post-emergency phases and its relation with the climatic factors, besides to identify and to relate dominance interactions with the foraging activity and to verify the α female participation in foraging activities control of M. cassununga in the pre and post-emergency phases in antropized environment. The study was accomplished in Juiz de Fora from july/2008 to june/2009, through weekly mappings in 60 colonies and of 150h of videotape in five colonies. The average duration of the immature stages in the pre and post-emergency phases went of 13,2 ±4,2 (6-24) and 14,4 ±5,2 (6-28) days for egg, 34,8 ±11,9 (15-69) and 32,2 ±7,7 (18-55) for larvae and 17,4 ±6 (7-29) and 18,5 ±5,3 (6-29) for pupae, respectively. There was no difference on the duration among development phases and seasons. The average registered of the egg phase until the adult emergency belonged to 65 days. There was more oophagy in pre than in post-emergence (x2=11,852; P=0,007) and difference for the reason between oophagy/cells (U=58; P=0,023). There was more oophagy at the rainy season (x2=53,878; P<0,001). For etogram, there were described five dominance acts and four of subordination. The α female remained in the first rank position, with dominance behaviors larger frequency in the pre (U=3; P=0,047) and in the post (U=3; P=0,047). There was correspondence between Dominance's Index and Matrix in 4 of the 5 colonies for the α female position that joined less of the foraging activities than the others in the pre (x2=63,131; P<0,001) and in the post (x2=51,882; P<0,001). The exits were influenced by the α female in the pre (x2=10,652; P=0,001) and in the post (x2=52,509; P<0,001). The numbers of returns originating of foragers exits with carbohydrate collection was superior to the others resources in the post (x2=38; P<0,001) and the α female had participation in all returns with resources. They were identified foragers different routes to the return to the colony with resources collected in the forage. Therefore, It was verified that the α female induces the foragers exits and controls them returns to the colony.

Musca domestica is an important mechanical vector of several pathogens to humans and domestic animals, being essential to study new alternatives to eficiente and safe control against this Diptera. The search for new insecticides alternative involves experiments that generally require the use of solvents that should not interfere in the results of the test substance. Thus, this study involved two stages: to investigate the sensitivity of M. domestica larvae and pupae to the solvents acetone, ethanol, methanol and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and the surfactant Tween 80 at different times of volatilization; and evaluating toxicity of phenylpropanoid eugenol and (E)-cinnamaldehyde against the same stages of this Diptera. For both experiments were used the patch test with 10 repetitions (n=10) for each solvent/surfactant and concentration of substances against each stage. In the first experiment acetone, ethanol and methanol were tested in analytical purity while DMSO and Tween 80 at the concentration of 5%. The times evaluated were zero, five, 10 and 15 minutes (23±2°C and 60±10% RH). The results showed that the volatilization time produces significant difference in larval mortality (LM) for the first three solvents tested, and acetone was similar to the control after five minutes volatilization (p>0.05). Methanol and ethanol were similar to the control after 15 minutes of evaporation (p>0.05). DMSO showed no significant LM (p> 0.05), but its accumulated mortality percenbtual (AMP) was over 14% (p<0.05). Tween 80 showed no difference in toxicity againts larvae related to time. For the pupae test only ethanol produced significant difference between the evaporation time, while acetone and methanol differed from the control in all treatments (p<0.05). DMSO and Tween 80 did not differ significantly from control at any time (p>0.05). The surfactant Tween 80 was the only one that showed no toxicity for both stages at the concentration tested, however the solvent acetone was volatilized more quickly, showing lower toxicity among those tested in analytical purity. For the second experiment, we used eight concentrations of each substance for the determination of lethal doses (LC50 and LC90). Eugenol showed the lowest values of LC50 and LC90 for the effectiveness of larval treatment (ELT) (1.5 and 3.75 mg/mL, respectively) while (E)-cinnamaldehyde had the lowest values of LC50 and LC90 for effectiveness of pupal treatment (EPT) (18.08 and 78.83 mg/mL, respectively). Both substances exhibited larvicidal activity from 2.5 mg/mL and ELT of 100% from 5 mg/mL. For pupal treatment (E)cinnamaldehyde differed from the control from the concentration of 10mg/mL (p <0.05) and both phenylpropanoid caused malformation in adults from 10 mg/mL. The greater EPT was from concentration of 30 mg/mL, being 67.2% for (E)-cinnamaldehyde and 32% for eugenol. 15 The products tested in this study had high potential larvicide, and both present pupicida effects and cause malformation in adultros from treated pupae. Still, it is possible to suggest the combined use of both substance for more efficient control, as (E)-cinamaldeído showed better larvicidal activity, while eugenol had better pupicida activity. Thus, using these phenylpropanoids show promise in the development of safer formulations for health and the environment, and these could be used in Integrated Pest Management strategies.

The correct identification and age determination of insect species involved in cadaver decomposition is of particular importance in estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI) in forensic sciences, particularly since the PMI is based on information on the life cycle of necrophagous insects. However, the correct identification of several insects species, especially in their immature stages, is difficult even for experienced taxonomists. In addition to the minuscule morphological differences between several species, there are some variables such as temperature and toxic substances that may affect the developmental time of insects, generating errors in the estimate of the PMI. Among the insects that are involved in cadaver decomposition, maggots of blowflies (Calliphoridae) are often the most important consumers of carrion and are present in all stages of decomposition. Thus, this study aimed to characterize morphologically and to evaluate the developmental time and the thermal requirements of the immature stages of two species of blowflies reared in different temperatures: Hemilucilia segmentaria (Fabricius) e Hemilucilia semidiaphana (Rondani) (Calliphoridae). All experiments were done in growth chambers with temperatures set at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35ºC, photophase of 12 hours and relative humidity at 70%. The maggots were reared using an artificial diet for their complete development. In addition to traditional morphological description and characterization of the immatures, the usefulness of the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) to identify the two species mentioned above was also assessed in this study / Doutorado / Parasitologia / Doutor em Parasitologia
