Regional Analysis of the Industrial Structure of the Bear River District: An Employment Approach

With the profound interest in regional planning by local administrative units to establish a more definitive criteria for policy implementation and framework for decision analysis, this study seeks to formulate a simplistic methodological approach in the construction of a fundamental tool for socioeconomic research. By utilizing the Bear River District as a case study, we have focused on the generation of basic informational requirements for manpower planning in analyzing the size, structure and distribution of the population and labor force; changes in the employment capacity of the region; sector interdependence; and historical economic base. Based on the results of the study, the input-output analysis has shown the predominance of labor-intensive industries which is indicative of low productivity growth. Specifically, the emergence of the services sector has been influenced partly by the expansion of the population base in the domestic market in view of its personalized character. However, such industries generate low income and employment multiplier effects in the economy due to their weak links with the other sectors. The projections of the labor force have depicted the changing working-age structure of the population and the divergent patterns in the labor force participation of the males and females in the Bear River District. On the other hand, the economic analysis of the demand for labor has depicted a gradual reorientation of jobs to more technical and mechanical operations. At the same time, there is a proliferation of part-time work which is more suitable for the employment of women in view of the time-flexibility it can offer between familial obligations and market activities. The historical economic base study has shown the various components of employment growth. Cache County has the most favorable distribution of industries while Box Elder County and Rich County represent regions losing employment. Generally, most of the industries are nonspecialized with a competitive advantage.

All-Sky Measurements of the Mesospheric "Frontal Events" From Bear Lake Observatory, Utah

Studies of internal gravity waves in the earth's upper atmosphere are of considerable interest. These waves play a very important role in the dynamics of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (ML T) region where they can transfer large amounts of energy and momentum from the lower atmosphere via wave saturation and dissipation. In particular, small-scale short-period (50ms"1) . Another unusual characteristic of "frontal events" is an apparent reversal in contrast of the wave structures as imaged in the hydroxyl (OH) emission (peak altitude- 87 km) when compared with the oxygen (OJ) "green line" (557.7 nm) emission (peak altitude -96 km) that can sometimes occur. In one isolated case, observed from Haleakala, Hawaii, the bright wave crests in the OH emission appeared to propagated through a dark structureless sky, whereas in the OI emission the same waves appeared to propagate into a bright sky, leaving an apparently depleted emission in its wake. Recent theoretical studies based on noble measurements have shown that frontal events may be due to a "bore-like" intrusion that raises the OJ (557. 7 nm) layer by a few km and at the same time depresses the OH layer by a similar amount. However, studies of fronts and bores in the ML T region are exceptionally rare. I have discovered and analyzed 16 frontal events from image data recorded at Bear Lake Observatory, Utah ( 41.6°N, 111.6°W), over the past four years. I have investigated some of their properties such as their horizontal wavelengths, horizontal phase speeds, observed periods, and their directions of motion. In addition, I have made comparative measurements of their relative intensities in the OH and OI emissions. These studies provide the first "extensive" data set on such events detailing their morphology and dynamics and should provide important information necessary for a deeper understanding of their occurrence frequency and properties.

The Geology of a Part of the Bear River Range and Some Relationships that it Bears with the Rest of the Range

The structure of the western three or four miles of the Bear River range east of Logan, Utah, has many times been alluded to in papers written locally on Cache Valley and the related ranges. There has not however, ever been, to the author's knowledge, an investigation made of this portion of the range for the express purpose of determining its exact structure. Although the area specifically covered by this present investigation is greatly inadequate to base the whole west range structure on, the author believes that the facts brought to light by the specific study of this area, added to the facts already known of the rest of the range, will give a clearer and more comprehensive interpretation of the whole western Bear River range front. It was with this purpose in mind that the present investigation was made. The original outline for the study included an investigation of the paleontology of the section. It was found however, after a few weeks study in the field, that the fossils in the local section are far too scarce for any comprehensive study in the present investigation. The study herein described then will be found to refer to paleontology only where it is necessary or where fossil horizons were found advantageous over lithologic units for mapping of formations. The section represented here has several times been studied in part. With a study of these investigations, it was found that there was enough lithologic difference in most of the sections to make possible local correlation and mapping on that basis. In order to make the present paper more thorough and complete it seemed advisable to branch out from the specific area in a few cases and investigate other parts of the valley and range for further insight.into some of the problems confronted on the area. It was also found necessary to make a rather complete study of the literature of related areas.

Analysis of Processes to Determine Site Suitability for a Marina at Bear Lake

The purpose of this thesis was to determine the criteria necessary for an analysis of site suitability for locating a marina at Bear Lake. Once criteria were defined and pertinent resource factors collected, a method to analyze the criteria was utilized to aid in the selection of the best site for locating this marina. Various methods to analyze site suitability were evaluated and the pros and cons of the chosen approach, a cluster analysis of existing resource transect data with hypothetical transect criteria, were discussed. Based on this study, no optimum sites were located at Bear Lake for a marina facility. However, it was concluded that transect number 3, near Garden City, is the most acceptable area for the development of a marina. It was also concluded that other areas of Bear Lake's shore zone are very sensitive and in order to protect the shore zone environment and water quality of Bear Lake, strict planning and development guidance needs to be generated and enforced for the Bear Lake shore zone.

Comparative Analysis of WIC Participants in the Bear River Health District

A thorough collection of data was completed on Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) particpants in the Bear River Health District to help determine the nutrition education needs of that WIC population. Data were also collected on education, income, and ethnic groups form other states and districts in the nation for comparison with results of this study. The data collected in this study will provide an adequate data base for the future development of nutrition education materials for this district and perhaps other similar districts nationwide. The Bear River district participants, Logan clinic participants in particular, appear to be quite atypical in regard to education level and ethnic variation.

Quaternary Bear River Paleohydrogeography Reconstructed from the 87Sr/86Sr Composition of Lacustrine Fossils

Diverted from its former course to the Pacific Ocean by basalt flows in Gem Valley, Idaho, the Bear River presently flows south into the Bonneville Basin. Constraining the timing of the river's diversion is pivotal to understanding the hydrologic budgets, and thus the climatological implications of the Bonneville Basin lakes. This study employs strontium (Sr) isotopes in mollusc fossils as a tracer of the Bear River water that entered Lake Thatcher, a small, closed-basin lake into which the redirected river flowed en route to the Bonneville Basin. The Sr ratios, combined with the temporal control afforded by amino acid geochronology and tephrochronology, were compared to mixing models constructed from the 87Sr/86Sr composition of the modern rivers draining into the basin to stimulate the Sr isotropic composition of Lake Thatcher. Strontium ratios of six fossil molluscs collected from the lower-most exposed section of the Main Canyon Formation (MCF) indicate that during the early Quaternary (>620 ka), Thatcher Basin was occupied by a locally fed, isotopically-enriched (87Sr/86Sr=0.71309) lake and did not receive input form the Bear River. Eleven fossils, collected from the uppermost exposed section of the MCF, indicate at least three course changes of the Bear River in the late Quaternary: diversion into the basin around 140 ka, diversion from the basin sometime between 140 and 100 ka, and finally diversion back into the basin around 50 ka. Hydrologic modeling of Thatcher Basin with and without the input of the Bear River suggests that water from both a Bear River-influenced or a locally fed lake is capable of filling the basin and causing it to spillover into the adjacent Bonneville Basin. Thus, the Bonneville Basin may have been receiving water from either the Bear River, or the Thatcher Basin rivers, significantly earlier than the ~30 ka previously proposed. Additional hydrologic modeling in Thatcher Basin suggests that a two-fold reduction in the effective precipitation as compared to modern conditions would be required to lower a locally fed Lake Thatcher the ~30 m necessary to account for the paleosol exposed in the uppermost MCF.

Effects of Dietary Plasticity and Landscape Heterogeneity on Brown Bears

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a generalist omnivore that occupies diverse habitats and displays high levels of behavioral plasticity. Plasticity in foraging behavior can result in variable diets across a population, and allow individuals to use a greater variety of resources. The distribution of food in space and time may also be an important factor in determining brown bear resource selection as it can greatly influence foraging efficiency. Our objectives were to determine if seasonal brown bear home ranges were influenced by temporal availability and spatial distribution of resources and if deviation from an optimal diet influenced brown bear body condition. Understanding how the spatial and temporal distribution of food influences brown bear space use and the relationships between behavioral plasticity and the ability of populations to persist in dynamic environments could provide additional insights into the eco-evolutionary advantages of variable foraging behavior and ultimately population resilience.

History, Status, and Resource Selection of the American Black Bear in Mississippi

Historically, black bears occurred throughout Mississippi but by 1932, <12 bears remained. Repatriation in neighboring states and conservation efforts in Mississippi have led to the recolonization of at least 2 subspecies (U. a. luteolus and U. a. americanus) of black bears in the state. I compiled available data to provide a synthesis of the history, current status, and management of black bears in Mississippi. Additionally, I used global positioning data collected from radio collared bears to determine the influence of distance to source population, cover type, distance to roads, distance to water, wetland reserve program areas, and human population density on black bear resource selection at various spatial scales. I studied characteristics of space use and resource selection of recolonizing bears in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (Delta). I assessed the influence of environmental parameters at the female core annual home-range (using 50% kernel density estimator) and male and female seasonal and annual home-ranges (95% kernel density estimator). Distance to source population and distance to roads had significant influence at the core female home-range scale. I found a sex-based difference in annual and seasonal home-ranges. I also found that bears exhibited response to and selection for specific resources with an affinity toward hardwood stands, particularly young-aged hardwoods. My research illustrates the importance of analyzing resource selection at multiple scales to gain a full understanding of parameters that influence the recolonization of a bear population.

The Effects Of Ecotourism On Polar Bear Behavior

Polar bears spend the majority of their lives on the sea ice, where they gain access to seals and mates. In western Hudson Bay, the sea ice melts for three to four months in the summer, and polar bears there are forced onto land. These bears live on their fat reserves for the duration of the iceless period, until temperatures get colder in the fall and freeze up begins. The aggregation of polar bears near Churchill, Manitoba during the ice free period has led to a thriving tourist industry, with a large influx of tourists visiting Churchill in the fall in a six to eight week period, yet little is known about the impacts of this industry on the biology of the bears. This study investigated the effect of tourist vehicles and human presence on the behavior of polar bears over the fall of 2003 and 2004. Overall time budgets were estimated for bears, and the behavior of males and females was compared. Females spent significantly less time lying and more time in locomotion than males. Time budgets were also estimated for bears in the presence and absence of tourist vehicles. Bears spent less time lying and more time in a sit/stand position in the presence of vehicles. Air temperature had no significant effect on the time budgets of polar bears. Tundra vehicle approaches were manipulated to determine effects on polar bear behavior, and to investigate any variables that significantly affected response, including habituation. A response was defined as any sudden whole body movement or change in position or behavior at the time of approach. A total of 25% of all bears responded to the experimental vehicle approach. For bears that responded to approach, the average distance at response was 43 m. The average speed of the vehicle was 0.66 ± 0.02 m/s (range 0.23 to 1.15 m/s). Approach variables that significantly influenced the likelihood of response of a bear to an approaching vehicle included angle of approach and vehicle speed. Direct approaches, in which the bear was in the path of the moving vehicle, had a higher probability of eliciting a response than indirect approaches, in which the vehicle stayed to one side of the bear at all times. Higher speeds of the vehicle increased the probability of a response by a bear. Behaviors of the bear that significantly predicted a response were shifting of the body and smacking of the lips. A playback study was conducted to determine the effects of human induced sound on polar bears. There was no significant effect of human sound on polar bears. Results presented here provide the first experimental evidence of variables in the tourist industry that affect polar bear behavior, and the first evidence of behavioral cues predicting a response to vehicle approach.

Petrology, Geochronology and Geochemistry of the White Bear Arm Complex and Associated Units, Grenville Province, Eastern Labrador

<p> The Hawke River Terrane of the Grenville Province in eastern Labrador is dominated by a coronitic gabbronorite to anorthosite body plus associated amphibolitic to granodioritic bodies known as the White Bear Arm Complex (WBAC). Petrographic and geochemical evidence supports a constant volume sub-solidus diffusion origin for double coronas of orthopyroxene and amphibole around olivine. Geochemical evidence suggests that corona formation was not completely isochemical, requiring an influx of potassium, iron and magnesium, but on a whole-rock scale was probably closed to the latter two elements. Nd and Sr isotopic evidence indicates that the coronas did not form as a response to a much later (eg. Grenville aged) metamorphic event, and probably. developed during post-crystallisational cooling or during a metamorphism shortly thereafter. </p> <p> The WBAC is cut by a monzonitic to granodioritic body mineralogically and chemically similar to the WBAC 'monzonite', known as the Paradise Arm Pluton (PAP). Petrographic, geochemical, and field relationship evidence indicates an igneous origin for the PAP and the WBAC monzonite. Both of these units have been subjected to low grade (greenschist facies) metamorphism. The WBAC and the PAP are hosted by the Paradise Metasedimentary Gneiss Belt, an aluminous paragneiss which has been raised to middle to upper amphibolite grade metamorphism, except immediately adjacent to the contact with the WBAC, where granulite grade has been obtained, forming high-temperature aluminosilicates such as osumilite and sapphirine. The contact zone has also been contaminated by fluids from the gabbronorites, reflected by petrography, elemental and isotopic geochemistry. </p> <p> Field relationships and geochemistry are ambiguous regarding whether the monzonitic units were derived by fractional crystallisation of the gabbronorite or partial melting of the paragneisses, but trace element variation favours the latter model. The PAP is a product of physical, geochemical and Sr isotopic mixing between a granodioritic end-member and a paragneissic one. </p> <p> Sm-Nd isotope systematics on whole-rocks do not provide a precise emplacement age for the WBAC gabbronorite, but indicate a Labradorian age (ca. 1.65 Ga old). Rb-Sr wholerock systematics show a Labradorian-aged trend and a steeply sloping trend interpreted as a mixing line with an unspecified crustal component, possibly corresponding to the potassium metasomatism indicated earlier. Rb-Sr on minerals from two rocks produces a precise age of 1675 ± 15 Ma and a similar, imprecise age. </p> <p> The WBAC monzonite and the Paradise Arm Pluton give Rb-Sr ages of 1621 ± 11 Ma CMSWD=24) and 1573 % 18 Ma (MSWD=9) respectively, with low initial 87Sr/ 86Sr ratios around 0.7040. These are interpreted as a minimum emplacement age and a mixing line, respectively. The PMGB paragneisses give a Rb-Sr age of 1630 ± 16 Ma CMSWD=35), with an initial 87Sr/ 86Sr composition around 0.704. All ages are equal within expanded 2σ error of each other (ie. MSWD=1), and give Labradorian ages. There is no evidence of Grenville-aged (ca. 1.0 Ga old) metamorphism. </p> <p> Rb-Sr isotopic and E Nd -E Br variations suggest crustal contamination of the gabbronorites, although the contaminant cannot be identified. Two separate mechanisms are required to generate the observed trends: a fluid metasomatism and a bulk-rock crustal contamination, or else contamination by currently unidentified low Sr crustal material. The WBAC gabbronorites provide evidence for 'extra'-LREE-depleted mantle beneath eastern Labrador at 1.65 Ga, with E Nd of at least +7.6. </p> / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)
