Bill Talen and Reverend Billy: A Shared Journey

Thomas, Kathleen 11 July 2013 (has links)
As the cultural upheaval of the `60s fought its way into the `70s, Bill Talen began his career first as a poet, hitchhiking the interstate highways from the Midwest to the Coasts eagerly engaging the literary, intellectual, and artistic opportunities offered by those cultural venues. He settled in San Francisco where he earned an M.A. in Theatre Arts and joined with friends to open a theatre, "Life on the Water." Here Talen met Sydney Lanier, a minister, who became his lifelong mentor and champion. Lanier recognized in Talen a bold presence which accompanies successful preachers and elevates their sermons. He promoted and supported Talen's move to New York City where Talen fully embraced his role as Reverend Billy and directed the full might of his talents against consumerism--especially Michael Bloomberg's socio-economic goals for the City. Eventually, Talen's critique came to challenge foreign policies that promote corporatism, environmental decline, and the global homogenization of culture. Talen's body of work is extensive and two strong threads run through it that are exemplary. One evidences a complete and purposeful disregard for any artistic borders, especially the edgy land between acting and not-acting, including the tiny gradients as one merges into the other. Talen's recognition of the porosity of borders likely facilitated his willing assimilation of his character, Reverend Billy, into his own daily life and persona, until the two merged, endowing Talen, the performance artist, with the skills and insights of a spiritual leader. The second thread is simply Talen's life's journey from reluctant performer of a religious role, to the willing engagement of that role, and finally the adoption of spiritual responsibility, eventually forming a church and a religion based on activism and a strong commitment to environmental causes. The performance artist became Reverend; the Reverend was born to act. This merging of talents, goals, and dreams created a character who would run for public office. It created a performance artist who would wed lovers, baptize new congregants, and console the grieving.

Björk, Monica January 1999 (has links)

La responsabilité du transporteur maritime en droit marocain et français / The liability of the marine carrier in moroccan and french law

Aliati, Ayoub 16 December 2014 (has links)
The good should be shipped safely to the desired port! That is the simple quintessence of the marine carrier’s liability. However, the simplicity of the principle does not mean the convenience of application. If, for Marx, the good is both “the basic form and the universal form of wealth”, for the marine carrier it is both the reason and the purpose. The reason of its economic existence and the purpose of his legal duty as responsible of the maritime transport and its safety.Fertile soil for conflicts, the liability of the marine carrier in Moroccan and French law is a real minefield. Cyclically turned upside down, schemes and rules of such liability remain confusingly scattered in the internal legislations and international regulations. In a legal and economic perspective, this thesis has set the aim to deconstruct the archetype of marine carrier’s liability in its “foundation" and "impact". In other words, analysing the layout of its rules, its scope and implementation. Intended as a practical thesis, the analysis and methodology used will seek to delve further in the issues raised by the liability rules; understand the technical and commercial subtleties as well as the difficulties and disputes raised between marine carriers and right holders for damages caused to the goods.

Vztahy USA - Čína 1992 - 2005 (komparace zahraniční politiky za Clintona a Bushe ml. vůči Severní Koreji spolu s rolí Číny v daném vztahu)

Veverková, Martina January 2008 (has links)
Prvním cílem mé diplomové práce je srovnání přístupů americké zahraniční politiky vůči SK za doby posledních dvou amerických prezidentů, B. Clintona a G.W. Bushe.

Desarrollo de un sistema electrónico portátil orientado a la detección de billetes falsos de 50, 100 y 200 soles basado en algoritmos de procesamiento digital de imágenes / Development of a portable electronic system oriented to the detection of counterfeit bills of 50, 100 and 200 soles based on digital image processing algorithms

Huaytalla Usurin, Bryan Juan, Humari Quispe, Diego Oswaldo 19 July 2020 (has links)
The present thesis project proposes to design a portable system to detect 50, 100 and 200 soles counterfeit bills with automatic diagnosis based on digital image processing and implemented on a reduced plate computer. Nowadays, the current counterfeiting techniques for bills being used in Peru are capable of eluding the traditional detection systems. The system being proposed is based on a more efficient detection because the acquisition and image segmentation is being focused on the chalcographic patterns of high relief. To optimize this process, a camera, a lens and a portable enclosure are being used. Then, the system applies the embossing filter, the sobel filter, the erosion filter and the expansion filter successively, to emphasize the distinctive characteristics of the legitimate bills. Finally, Support Vector Machines are used to classify real and counterfeit bills, based on the training process performed for each denomination. The result delivered will allow the program to discern the legitimacy of the bill and show it on a display to ease the understandment by any user. Likewise, the computer is connected to a database in order to transmit the statistics of counterfeit bills detected. To validate the solution, samples of 278 bills, counterfeit and legal, of 50, 100 and 200 soles were processed. These were provided by the BCRP, the official organism of Peru in charge of coins and bills. In this tests, the results show a presicion of over 97% of counterfeited bills correctly identified. / Tesis

Dominionist Policy Goals

Benedetti, Alexa Leigh January 2023 (has links)
I argue that, while no major politician is openly acknowledging affiliation with or adoption of Dominionist political beliefs, that these beliefs are influencing the tenor of the Republican party and that the influence of these beliefs is reflected in many of the policies and platforms of prominent members. Further, there are Dominionist adjacent organizations actively driving the Overton window and the public policy agenda towards a more Domionist centered political arena. Specifically, this paper examines the 1776 Report as a reflection of Dominionist themes and the culmination of efforts by the Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation and its Project Blitz to bring Dominionist Christian viewpoints into the public discourse. Thus, this paper argues that the Dominionstis mindset has successfully reached the highest levels of power in the US government.

THE HYDROLOGY AND RIPARIAN RESTORATION OF THE BILL WILLIAMS RIVER BASIN NEAR PARKER, ARIZONA

Harshman, Celina Anne, Maddock, Thomas III January 1993 (has links)
Riparian forests, which support rich biological diversity in the North American southwest, have experienced a sharp decline in the last century. The extent of this decline has been estimated to range from 70% to 95% across the southwest (Johnson and Haight, 1984). The principal components of riparian forests which sustain a broad spectrum of species and describe the overall health of a system are cottonwoods (sp. Populus) and willows (sp. Salix). The importance of cottonwoods is aptly described by Rood et al (1993): "....these trees provide the foundation of the riparian forest ecosystem in semi -arid areas of western North America. Unlike wetter areas to the east and west, a loss of cottonwoods in these riparian areas is not compensated through enrichment from other tree species. If the cottonwoods die, the entire forest ecosystem collapses." Cottonwood and willow species are adversely affected by anthropogenic influences ranging most prominently from the introduction of regulated flows via dams to agricultural clearing, water diversions, livestock grazing, and domestic settlement. These influences effectively alter the system hydrology that the forests rely upon. As the widespread destruction of these forests and the associated irreparable damage to endangered species habitat has come into clear view in the past decade, research efforts have focused upon identifying the ecological needs of riparian systems. The potential of modifying such systems to soften the human impact upon them, in effect presenting further alterations on a hydrologic system to return it to its natural regime, is another component of the research on riparian systems. The Bill Williams River riparian corridor, near Parker, Arizona (Figure 1.1), contains the last extensive native riparian habitat along the lower Colorado River (BWC Technical Committee, 1993). This unique resource was established as the Bill Williams River Management Unit, Havasu National Wildlife Refuge in 1941 and covers 6105 acres along the lower 12 miles of the Bill Williams River (Rivers West, 1990). The Bill Williams Unit is currently managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of the U.S. Department of Interior. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also funded this research effort. The lush vegetation corresponding to the wetland conditions along the valley floor sharply contrast with the Sonoran desert landscape of the upper valley walls creating a magnificent picture. The Management Unit terminates at Lake Havasu, which forms the confluence of the Bill Williams and Colorado Rivers. The system provides habitat for a wide variety of species, many of which are endangered or state- listed species, including habitat for neotropical migratory birds. This habitat has undergone serious degeneration during the past quarter century. The recruitment of cottonwood and willow trees has been fatally interrupted by anthropogenic encroachment in the form of the construction of Alamo Dam in 1969 at the head of the Bill Williams River and commercial development along the River.
