Huchez, Aurore 22 January 2013 (has links)
Many studies were dedicated to the analysis of backward giant circles prior to release, releases itself or release-regrasp skills on high bar or uneven bars. To our knowledge, skills with flight phase to release low bar and regrasp high bar or the contrary were not studied yet. The first chapter of this doctoral thesis is dedicated to a kinematic analysis of the “counter movement forward in flight” on uneven bars and to the moment of inertia and angular momentum recorded for two groups of gymnasts performing this task: an expert group and a novice group. The second chapter highlights motor control laws used by the gymnasts of both groups. An optimization of the counter movement forward in flight was carried out in the third chapter in order to know if the movements of both groups may be improved and whether body mass center trajectory or body movements in flight most influence final performance. Effects of introducing a motor control law in the optimization process on the realism of optimized movements were studied.

Appropriate standing-leaning backward angle for healthier posture while working in front of the computer

Kosovari, Fatmir January 2017 (has links)
Health problems associated with computer usage have become more common in recent decades. There are many people who sit or stand still for a long time in the wrong posture while working in front of the computers. There is a lot of research showing that too sedentary sitting and standing causes health problems. Therefore there are many attempts to solve the problems by designing different ergonomic workstations. Except for workstations for sitting or standing, there are also attempts to design workstations for standing-leaning-backward posture. Since there standing-leaning-backward posture during sedentary working in front of the computer can be a better option than sedentary sitting or standing, it is important to find the appropriate standing-leaning backward angle. This is why this study is focused on finding out the appropriate angle of the standing-leaning backward posture during work in front of computer screen. This posture can be an alternative to prevent the following health problems: headache, pain from the neck, shoulders, and back while sitting; and knees, legs, lower back and varicose veins while standing. The appropriate standing-leaning backward angle, where the person felt most comfortable was in this work determined to be between forty to fifty degrees measured starting from the vertical posture. It is also important to understand that the exact angle differs from person to person and depends on the individual skeleton and posture. The result was achieved by testing the comfort for different persons on a specially constructed adjustable transformed tipper-board to a workstation that supports standing-leaning backward posture in different angles. The objective measures like the measured pulse and blood pressure in standing-leaning posture does not differ significantly between standing or sitting postures. The outcome of this project the recommendation to design workstations that offer the opportunity to vary from sitting to standing-leaning posture between forty to fifty degrees.

Singular BSDEs and PDEs Arising in Optimal Liquidation Problems

Xia, Xiaonyu 16 January 2020 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes BSDEs and PDEs with singular terminal condition arising in models of optimal portfolio liquidation. Portfolio liquidation problems have received considerable attention in the financial mathematics literature in recent years. Their main characteristic is the singular terminal condition of the value function induced by the liquidation constraint, which translates into a singular terminal state constraint on the associated BSDE or PDE. The dissertation consists of three chapters. The first chapter analyzes a multi-asset portfolio liquidation problem with instantaneous and persistent price impact and stochastic resilience. We show that the value function can be described by a multi-dimensional BSRDE with a singular terminal condition. We prove the existence of a solution to this BSRDE and show that it can be approximated by a sequence of the solutions to BSRDEs with finite increasing terminal condition. A novel a priori estimate for the approximating BSRDEs is established for the verification argument. The second chapter considers a portfolio liquidation problem with unbounded cost coefficients. We establish the existence of a unique nonnegative continuous viscosity solution to the HJB equation. The existence result is based on a novel comparison principle for semi-continuous viscosity sub-/supersolutions for singular PDEs. Continuity of the viscosity solution is enough to carry out the verification argument. The third chapter studies an optimal liquidation problem under ambiguity with respect to price impact parameters. In this case the value function can be characterized by the solution to a semilinear PDE with superlinear gradient. We first prove the existence of a solution in the viscosity sense by extending our comparison principle for singular PDEs. Higher regularity is then established using an asymptotic expansion of the solution at the terminal time.

Exploring backward stochastic differential equations and deep learning for high-dimensional partial differential equations and European option pricing

Leung, Jonathan January 2023 (has links)
Many phenomena in our world can be described as differential equations in high dimensions. However, they are notoriously challenging to solve numerically due to the exponential growth in computational cost with increasing dimensions. This thesis explores an algorithm, known as deep BSDE, for solving high-dimensional partial differential equations and applies it to finance, namely European option pricing. In addition, an implementation of the method is provided that seemingly shortens the runtime by a factor of two, compared with the results in previous studies. From the results, we can conclude that the deep BSDE method does handle high-dimensional problems well. Lastly, the thesis gives the relevant prerequisites required to be able to digest the theory from an undergraduate level.

Developing a Multicultural Reader for First Year Writing Courses: A Backward Design Approach

Phuong M Tran (11192733) 28 July 2021 (has links)
This dissertation features a curriculum development project on redesigning a piloted multicultural reader which serves to cultivate intercultural competence in diverse domestic and international students in first year writing courses. My redesign process was guided by pedagogical implications from the preliminary results of the implemented multicultural reader and from composition scholarship on multicultural readers. Specifically, my redesigned multicultural reader must(i) achieve pedagogical alignment among learning objectives, assessment practices, and instructional materials and (ii) overcome the commonplaces in multicultural reader design regarding cultural and linguistic inclusivity of authorship, content and student audience, genre diversity, text sequencing vigor, and intervention authenticity. I adopted Wiggins and McTighe’s (2005) Backward Design framework to the (re)design of the Multicultural Reader and illustrate my material development principles in one Sample Section that moves students from the Minimization of difference orientation to the Acceptance of difference orientation.<div><br></div><div>First, I converted the definition and indicators of intercultural competence emerged from Deardorff’s (2006) study as well as the pedagogical implications from Bennett’s (1986) DMIS into learning outcomes for the Reader to aligning learning outcomes and assessment. Second, I integrated the DMIS into the Reader to align assessment practices and instructional materials. I divided the Reader into four sections correspondent to the five stages of intercultural development on the DMIS, namely(i) from Denial to Defense, (ii) from Defense to Minimization, (iii) from Minimization to Acceptance, and (iv) from Acceptance to Adaptation. I selected, designed, adapted, and sequenced the readings and intervention tasks based on stages and strategies of intercultural progression as highlighted in the DMIS scholarship. In my Sample Section, I also provided guidelines on how instructors can map students’ reflective writings onto the DMIS for both formative and summative evaluation. Finally, my redesign of the Multicultural Reader addresses the limitations in previous multicultural readers. To improve the social representativeness of authorship and content, my Reader showcases exemplary texts written by a diverse author group which foreground contemporary issues in different multicultural societies. Reading instructions do not forward any assumptions about the potential student audience, overcoming the issue of audience misrepresentation. The selected readings also exhibit genre diversity in terms of rhetorical modes and types of sources. Readings and interventions are sequenced based on the DMIS guidelines and projects a progressively complex trajectory of affective, cognitive, and behavioral practices for students’ intellectual growth. Each multicultural reading is augmented with intervention tasks adapted from composition studies and intercultural training scholarship to sharpen students’ academic writing and research skills. My interactive tasks also require students to move past passive reading by activating their reading knowledge into real world cross-cultural encounters and purposefully reflecting on their experiential learning in writing assignments.<br></div>
