Letters to Francisco : negative imagery in art and the depiction of microstructural elements of the human body

Milos, Emil . University of Ballarat. January 2006 (has links)
"The thesis itself, involves some psychological and philosophical aspects and thoughts about fear as the main mover in the so called negative aesthetic. This specific method of self-expression, its possible triggers and the reasons that may initiate art creation on the basis of pessimistic and ugly imagery have not been discussed to a great degree in the past. Generally, the content of this writing is focused on the fictious correspondence between two engravers and printmakers. These invented letters serve as an exposé for practical findings and thoughts about the author's works executed during the period 2005-2006." / Master of Arts

Kant's Baconian method as a transformation of Aristotelian transcendental philosophy: a propaedeutic

Love, Brandon Joel 28 August 2018 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the transcendental philosophy of Immanuel Kant. I provide the background of transcendental philosophy before Kant, beginning from Aristotle. Kant transformed Aristotelian transcendental philosophy by using the method of the sciences in the Modern period. This method was initiated by Francis Bacon, in his method of induction. Isaac Newton transformed the method so that it could deal with verification and falsification. This Newtonian method was taken up into chemistry, serving as a guide for the analysis and synthesis of elements. Kant used this method in his transcendental philosophy, with a view to putting metaphysics onto the path of a science. Kant was first awakened to transcendental idealism in 1769, though he did not put forth a full transcendental philosophy until 1781. In his mature transcendental philosophy, he not only uses the scientific method, but he also illustrates the categories using biological imagery. After looking at the broad contours of Kant's transcendental philosophy, I deal with the first criticism of his transcendental philosophy. In replying to his critic, Kant made explicit his scientific method, while drawing from the thought of David Hume and Thomas Reid. With Kant's explanations of his transcendental philosophy in hand, I turn to an element of his non-transcendental philosophy, namely moral philosophy, in order to provide a contrast that serves to illuminate the precise nature of his transcendental philosophy.

Les mondes du voyageur : une épistémologie de l'exploration (XVIème - XVIIIème siècles) / The worlds of the traveller : an epistemology of exploration (16th-18th centuries)

Gallegos Gabilondo, Simon 22 June 2016 (has links)
This study examines the issue of exploration, as it stands in the travel chronicles that have forged modern world cartography between the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, favouring the analysis of epistemological questions between the new and the unknown. Through an examination of this corpus about America, and the geographical and political speculation about the Southern Land, it shows, on the one hand, that a regime of spatiality begins with these texts; on the other, that its history is also the history of philosophy, as far as it conceived itself on the model of exploration in the baconian tradition until D’Alembert in the 18th century. It identifies the historical foundation of geographical images used in the modern thought, as well as continuity among knowledge production and the production of a space to discover by exploration travels, about which, unlike Blumenberg’s metaphorology, Foucault’s archaeology founds a limit. Then, it questions the exploration’s anthropological horizon of meaning, particularly by the controversy of a giant human species in the New World, and examines the scientific appropriation of this literary figure in the natural history from Acosta to Buffon. Lastly, after a look on the ambiguous relation between the ageing world thesis and the epistemological openness of possible objects of exploration, it proposes an analysis of the importance of the gigantum demonstratio in Vico’s philosophical program.

This thesis aims to perform a spatial and temporal analysis of the gully of Grito Stream, located in the urban perimeter of the city of Rancharia, and present the proposals to control this peri-urban erosion. This gully presents evidence of development dating back to the 1960s, recent episodes of damage to urban infrastructure and the presence of active erosive processes at the banks. To present a geographic analysis of this case of erosion process are presented aspects of land use history in the municipality of Rancharia and physical-geographic aspects and land use changes in the watershed of the Grito Stream and in detail scale the cartographical information on the gully. In view of this case of erosive process that is perpetuated for five decades, in this thesis detailed geographic information of the gully is presented from data collected in topographic surveys with geodesic equipment. For twenty-four months, a topographic monitoring of borehole plots was carried out, where a ridge erosion greater than 1.5 m was observed in four points and an average of 0.85 m, in all the monitored plot there was a loss of 305.9 square meters of area. In relation to the erosion process control proposals, buses with plant fiber (Bambusa bambos L.) were implanted in an experimental plot with soil level monitoring by means of erosion pins, and from a comparative analysis there is a greater upper soil movement in the experimental plot without the use of buses. Based on the measurements of soil movement levels and soil density data, estimates of soil loss were presented in the experimental plots. In the area of the experimental plot with barriers native plant species were planted with the intention of contributing to the recovery of the degraded area. In this sense, based on detailed geographic information on the area degraded by the gully of the Grito Stream, the thesis aims to contribute in the planning of future measures for an effective recovery of this area in Rancharia. From the empirical proposal presented in this thesis are presented ways to rethink the philosophy of Bacon and his contributions on Geography. / FAPESP: 2013/05664-4

This work search after some traces of Francis Bacon¿s thought in eighteenth century¿s French Encyclopaedia. Teorie znaků Rogera Bacona / Roger Bacon's Theory of Signs

Karľa, Michal January 2012 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is Roger Bacon`s work De signis. Its goal is to consider in what sense Bacon works out the general theory of signs. In this sense the thesis` method is situated in the field of "archeology of sings". First it examines Bacon`s definition of sign as a relation, investigates its formal properties and ways of application in particular cases, i.e. Bacon`s classification of signs. Then it shows the way in which Bacon applies this general notion in particular examinations, that is in problems of what the words signify, concept of univaocation and equivocation, theory of analogy and last but not least it considers a question of the nature of signification itself. The last chapter is dedicated to the examination of the (re)imposition phenomenon together with consideration of result it has on the notion of sign relation`s nature and how it serves as an explanation of the process in which these relations work. Keywords: Roger Bacon, John Deely, Charles S. Peirce, medieval semiotics, archeology of signs.

Francis Bacon's New Atlantis: The Quiet Revolution of Science, Religion, and Politics

Lowe, Evan M. 05 1900 (has links)
Francis Bacon (1561-1626) is recognized as a founder of the modern scientific project and a forerunner of the modern era of political thought. He advocated the development of an active science that would enable human beings to control nature in order to relieve man's estate. To accomplish this, Bacon argues that we must reconstruct all arts and sciences upon a more solid foundation. In reconstructing the arts and sciences, Bacon subtly changes the meaning of foundational religious, political, and scientific notions in order to better suit his project of progress. As the inheritors of his vision, turning to Bacon helps recover foundational considerations that have been forgotten as a result of his success. This dissertation approaches Bacon's thought through an analysis of his New Atlantis, a fable that envisions the completion of his project. I also turn to his other political, scientific, and religious works as appropriate to supply what is omitted in the fable. I find that although his revision of religious, scientific, and political foundations is conducted subtly they are nevertheless revolutionary, and essential for preparing the various outlooks that characterize the modern world.
