In Quebec, there are many adults whithout a highschool diploma. Among them, several have learning disabilities. Few researches adress the question of their participation to adult education programs. The purpose of this study is to identify the barriers faced by adults with learning disabilities when participating in the public adult education system. In this qualitive study, twelve learning-disabled adults between the age 18-50 were interviewed. From the analyses of these interviews we observed that the most frequently cited obstacles are dispositionnal and institutionnal. Interpreting these results leads us to conclude that the adjustment and diversification of the institutionnal practices in the adult education system could increase school perseverance and success among adults with learning disabilities.

The Relationship Between Sickle Cell Support Group Status and Barriers to Care as Perceived by Parents of Children with Sickle Cell DiseaseNwachuku, Goldie Okechi Nwaru 01 January 2016 (has links)
By examining barriers to care, health professionals can better understand what disparities exist between groups and who may be at greater risk for poor primary care. Researchers have highlighted the need for additional research that focuses on the extent of unmet needs for U.S. children with sickle cell disease (SCD). The purpose of this quantitative study was to compare the differences between parents who are in a SCD support group and those who are not. The theoretical framework of this study is based on the chronic care model and social support theory. A total of 128 parents of children with SCD completed the study survey. The sampling occurred by e-mail, phone, and face-to-face conversations. Selection criteria for potential participants in both groups were based on their children being diagnosed with SCD. Seventy-four participants (57.8%) were members of a SCD support group, and 54 participants (42.4%) were not members of a SCD support group. In this study, the independent variables were parents attending or not a SCD support group. The t test and MANCOVA was used to assessed the association between perceptions of barriers to care and support group status. However, statistical analysis showed no significant results. The null hypothesis was not rejected. Therefore, the positive social change implication is to further explore potential factors that may shape perceptions of barriers to care for those with SCD so that perceived barriers to care can be overcome.

Identifying the export trade barriers of the business services sector in South Africa / Dorothea Leedia van der LindeVan der Linde, Dorothea Leedia January 2012 (has links)
A service can be traded either directly between a consumer and provider of the service or a service can serve as an input into the manufacturing of various products and other services that are traded. Trade in services has therefore become an essential part of global trade and contributes significantly to global, as well as South African economic growth, development and productivity. Service trade has furthermore been growing at a greater rate than trade in manufactured goods. The growth of services trade can be attributed to growth in goods trade, technological advances, rising per capita incomes, micro-economic reforms, as well as increased consumer and business demand, and technological change.
According to the GATS’ (General Agreement on Trade in Services) services sectorial classification list, the service sector can be classified into twelve major categories and these sectors can further be divided into 160 sub-sectors. One of the sub-sectors that have been identified that has significant growth potential globally and for South Africa is the sub-sector, ‘other business’ services. This sub-sector falls under the sector, business services. Trade data revealed that this sub-sector is one of the top three traded service categories internationally, as well as for South Africa. For the purpose of this study the focus was specifically on ‘other business’ services provided by members of the BEPEC (Built Environmental Professional Export Council). The services performed by the members of the BEPEC are: consulting engineering, architectural, quantity surveying, and construction project managing services. These services are inputs into the manufacturing or construction of human creations such as buildings, structures, dams, roads etc.
Trade barriers, however, hinder the free flow of services from the service provider to customers in other countries. This is no different for the providers of ‘other business’ services. Therefore in order to increase the competitiveness of South Africa’s ‘other business’ services sector internationally; the primary objective of this study was to identify the internal, as well as external barriers experienced by the exporters of ‘other business’ services. These internal and external barriers were identified by means of a questionnaire that the members of the BEPEC, who are exporters of ‘other business’ services, completed. Once these barriers were identified recommendations were made to the South African government.
The most significant internal barriers were found to be: • lack of information about foreign markets; • lack of information on how to enter these foreign markets; • lack of personnel who are experienced in export activities; • scarcity of internal financial resources for export purposes and export promotion. • The most significant external barriers were found to be: • exchange rate risk and the risk of non-payment; • corruption and bribery; • risks involved with political instability in a country; • restrictions on immigration provisions such as delay in obtaining entry visas, residency or work permits; • poor infrastructure; • foreign government procurement policies; • distance to the target market. All of the identified barriers can mostly be addressed by the South African government by providing training, the provision of market related information, and trade negotiations. / Thesis (MCom (International Trade))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012

Photovoice: exploring immigrants and refugees' perceptions and access to mental health services in WinnipegSherzoi, Ogai 25 January 2017 (has links)
The deterioration of health status for immigrants and refugees is mostly observed after their arrival in Canada. Additionally, immigrant and refugee minorities are at a higher risk for mental health problems. Yet, refugees and immigrants in Canada, particularly those from non-European countries tend to underutilize community resources and mental health services. This study uses a participatory arts-based method of photovoice to gain deeper knowledge of the realities and lived experiences of immigrants and refugees who have or are dealing with mental health problems in Winnipeg. Additionally, it will shed light on the barriers faced by immigrant and refugee community, and the context in which they are unable to access services. Six immigrant and refugee individuals volunteered to participate in this photovoice project. The participants discussed structural barriers, non-recognition of non-Canadian credentials, underemployment/ unemployment, poverty, discrimination, stigma, language barriers, lack of culturally inclusive services, inequality, lack of social network, and marginalization. The findings have implications for social work and future research is discussed. / February 2017

The World Trade Organization (WTO) officially commenced on January 1, 1995, for the purpose of administering the multilateral trading system. Doha Round was the first round of WTO negotiations, which began in 2001 and extends to the present day. Numerous impasses in the multilateral context have emerged from the negotiating tables in the WTO, especially in the agricultural area, of special interest to Brazil. Thus, the objective of the dissertation is to simulate reductions in tariff and non-tariff barriers at the multilateral level, and to verify the benefits to Brazil, with emphasis on the primary sector. For that, a computable general equilibrium model was estimated using the GTAP software, and four scenarios that incorporated reductions of tariff and non-tariff barriers were performed. The results show that, specifically for Brazil, in the scenarios in which only tariff reductions are incorporated, the primary and agroindustry sectors would be the most benefited. The multilateral reduction of BNTs would favor, especially, the industrial sectors, with greater technological content. When both, BNT reductions combined with tariff reductions were simulated, all sectors would increase exports, especially livestock, agro-industry, and high-tech manufactures. Concerning well-being, scenarios incorporating reductions in BNTs or combined reductions in BNTs and tariffs are the most beneficial for all regions included in the study, with global gains that can reach over $ 1 trillion.

O papel do compartilhamento do conhecimento a partir da gestão do conhecimento / The role of knowledge sharing from the knowledge managementReis, Ingrid Weingärtner 04 August 2016 (has links)
In the organizational context the importance of knowledge is an issue on which there is no further discussion. Knowledge has a strategic role for the generation of innovative products and services that meet or constant changes of necessities and desires of consumers. This knowledge as such, is not in the organizations, but is part of individuals. Although it might seem obvious, the transfer of the subject to the organization\'s knowledge is actually a challenge. This is because the knowledge of people is not necessarily aligned with the organization\'s needs. Sought with this research to identify what resources and strategies can be used to power sharing actions, based mainly in procesos of knowledge creation. We attempted to also elucidate the conceptual divergence that exists between transfer and sharing of knowledge, expressions often confused in practice and research by other authors. And knowledge sharing an action of the subject within the organization, it was necessary to know the main barriers that prevent such actions. These barriers may be related to the individual\'s own behavior or happen in organizational ambit. For this research, it adopted as methodology research-action, which has as its hallmark the participation of the people involved in the research. Created a resource assessment table and sharing strategies, based on the four conversion steps of knowledge (SECI) and applied to a set of resources and strategies identified during the search. This evaluation identified a set of features considered transverse to the knowledge creation process. Thus, the conclusion that was reached is that there is not necessarily a feature or set of features for a specific stage of the SECI process. Before we can identify resources that, by their characteristics and categories, can be adopted throughout the cycle.

Depressive Symptoms and The Stress Process in Racial/Ethnic Minority Graduate StudentsMartin A. Nolasco (5930090) 17 January 2019 (has links)
<div>
<p>In the last several years, it has
become apparent that racial/ethnic minority graduate students face an increased
risk for mental health issues (Clark, Mercer, Zeigler-Hill, & Dufrene,
2012; Paradies et al., 2015). Contextualizing their experiences and determining
what factors play a role in increasing this risk specifically for racial/ethnic
minority graduate students could help provide information about areas for
intervention. However, there is a lack of literature on the experiences of
racial/ethnic minorities in graduate school and the implications of those
experiences for their mental health. It is important to understand their
experience in the context of minority status stress through the use of Stress
Process Theory (Pearlin, Menaghen, Lieberman, & Mullan, 1981). As such I
hypothesized several positive and unique contributions to depressive symptoms
by career and education barriers and minority status stress. Additionally, I
hypothesized that minority status stress would mediate the relationship between
career and education barriers and depressive symptoms, and that perceived
family social support would moderate the relationships between career and
education barriers, minority status stress, and depressive symptoms. To this
end I used this regression-based, quantitative study to examine the associations
between the perception of career and education barriers, minority status
stress, perceived family social support, and depressive symptoms among a sample
(<i>N</i> = 311) of domestic racial/ethnic
minority graduate students currently enrolled in degree granting programs. The
results revealed that the perception of career barriers uniquely contributed to
depressive symptoms, although not in the hypothesized direction with career
barriers being a negative predictor of depressive symptoms. Minority status
stress uniquely contributed to depressive symptoms in the hypothesized
directions and serves as a mediator between the perception of career barriers
and depressive symptoms. The perception of education barriers did not uniquely
contribute to depressive symptoms. Additionally, perceived family social
support moderated only the relationship between the perception of career
barriers and depressive symptoms; a moderator effect was not found in any other
relationship. Implications for future research and practice, as well as the study’s
limitations are discussed<b></b></p>

Dopady protekcionismu v současné krizi: případová studie NAFTA / Impacts of protectionism in the current crisis: case study NAFTAVránková, Jana January 2011 (has links)
Tendecies to protectionism appeared in all crisis so far. The current one is no exception. Used protecting tools are the characteristics what differentiate them. The most used tools are non-tarrif measures, especially technical. Governments also applied stimulus packages which often included buy-national type of activities. The thesis concetrates on the roots of the changed pattern in the global economy. It investigates the influence of WTO, which liberalizes the world trade on the multilateral basis. On the other hand, the thesis focuses on regionalism and regional integrations, that liberalize trade only among few involved countries. The thesis also reflects the division of the world to developing and developed countries and describes differences in used measures. The case study investigates the North American Free Trade Agreement, which includes one developing and two developed countries. It also includes the world's biggest economy, whose behaviour heavily impacts the development of the global economy as a whole. This example illustrates differences in the measures used by governments of developing and developed coutries. It analyses influence of a regional integration to these measures and compares it to the influence of WTO. The possibilities of further enlargement of the free trade area and of involving the member countries to other integrations are reflected as well.
