Roma discrimination in Europe : an investigation using the analytical framework of Zygmunt Bauman

Ehrenstråhle, Ulrika January 2012 (has links)
This paper investigates the discriminatory situation of Romas in contemporary Europe with the use of Zygmunt Bauman’s analytical framework he developed on the situation of Jews and the Holocaust. Characteristics of the Modern Society have, according to Bauman, created opportunities for cornerstones of discrimination to occur and together with facilitators they can hold the discrimination alive and make it long lasting. In the case Bauman examined, it all ended in genocide. With the aim to investigate how Bauman’s analytical framework would explain why Roma discrimination could continue and by using a qualitative method of text substance analysis of foremost academic articles, the situation of the Romas are presented in a code according to the concepts in a scheme of Bauman’s analytical framework. There is no genocide going on today against Romas, but when looking through the glasses of Bauman and implementing his analytical framework on the Roma situation, only one stone is missing for it to happen. This paper concludes that there are no reasons to deny that a new Holocaust can happen in the modern society of Europe, but this time with another minority group as victims. Racism seems to be there, the only missing element is a stronger belief in racial hierarchy. This paper also offers an analytical scheme for future studies on other groups that have been suffering of long lasting discrimination, to further emphasize how Bauman’s framework would be able to become generalized on discrimination.

Zygmunt Bauman

Li, Yi-tsung 08 December 2004 (has links)
Sovereignty has long been deemed an unchallengeable concept. However, starting from end of twentieth century, this concept is severely impacted by the trend of Globalization. And now, it becomes a debatable issue that whether or not the core characters of the traditional Sovereignty theory: i.e. supremacy, inalienability and indivisibility remain. By way of methodologies of documentary analysis and comparative analysis, I intend to start with introducing the traditional Sovereignty theory, examining how this Sovereignty socio-science was structured by the traditional Sovereignty theory, which includes how the core concept, ie. Freedom, Capitalism and modernity impacted the traditional Sovereignty theory. Then, I would like to introduce Zygmunt Bauman¡¦s view, who is one of the contemporary socio-science masters, toward Freedom, Capitalism and Modernity, and to compare the difference implied between these two views. And last, I tried to critique this artificial Sovereignty concept, although it long been adopted, with Bauman¡¦s view from the following dimensions: (a) the structural error of Sovereignty theory; and (b) in reality, the collapse led by modernity of the 3 pillars, ie. Economy, Culture and Military of Sovereignty theory.

Musikupplevelsens betydelse : En studie av fenomenet musiklyssnande i det rörliga liminala tillståndets urbana landskap

Färlin, Mårten January 2012 (has links)

"It's just a possession" : En studie av konsumistiska tendenser i realityserien The Hills / "It's just a possession" : Trends in consumerism in the TV reality show The Hills

Lindmark, Erika, Olsson Lanneberg, Hanna January 2012 (has links)

Postmodernity as Thanatos: the Relationship Between Illusion and Needs

Chouinard, James B. 16 January 2010 (has links)
Zygmunt Bauman and other postmodernists have argued that postmodernity is characterized by the disintegration of the legitimacy and authority of what has been referred to as grand narratives or "illusions." These theorists often highlight the manipulative and obfuscating effects of illusion. As such, scholars like Bauman contend that postmodernity sets the stage for sincere, moral responsibility. However, they fail to acknowledge that these illusions provide a cultural and social function through their satisfaction of human needs. Failing to fully acknowledge the importance of this function and human needs in general leads many postmodern theorists to be unable to adequately theorize about the contemporary epoch. In addition to the weakening authority of grand illusions, the advent of technologically advanced society coincided with the process of desublimation (a process by which instant gratification occurs). Desublimation worked to undermine what Sigmund Freud has referred to as the life instincts by promulgating false needs (i.e., wants or desires perceived as needs). As such, contemporary society may be depicted as constituting anomic, atomistic individuals seeking self-preservation. This process may be delineated as the death instincts, or Thanatos, as coming to triumph over the life instincts, Eros. A Thanatos society has significant implications for moral responsibility. The diminution of sincere emotional integration facilitates the unbridled spread of postemotionalism into more and more spheres of social life. As postemotional scripts become the prevailing moral guidelines, Thanatos manifests itself as a compulsion to repeat destructive behavior at the societal and individual level. Society and its members struggle in their attempts to choose the "right" course of action. Confusion and fear become affixed features of personal and social life and morality becomes an arbitrary endeavor.

The purpose of this research was investigate the possible places of friendship in the context of contemporary society's diagnosis made by polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman to map the impacts of the issue in the educational field. We start from the statement of the author in the end of book The Art of Life about the role of friendship, considering it as a safe place in the current world liquidity. The analysis of this statement leads us to the relationship between what the author called administered society - based by order and discipline - and liquid modern society, also called modernity without illusions, historical time marked by uncertainty which in turn produces a feeling of ambivalence. In this context, as a means of way of life, is built a corporate model based by consumer, marked by the logic of cost-benefit analysis that also affects human relationships. This process generates impacts on the ethical-political dimension, which is now characterized by individualism, removal from the public field and difficulty of building common issues to be recognized and addressed in the social field. It was observed in the work of Bauman that the difficulties of living with the other materialize the concept of stranger, which in turn, marks the distance of Difference. The diagnosis made by the author leads us to discussion about the relationships mediated by technology and the development of virtual communities that show and keeps the fragility of bonds in our current moment. Regarding the mapping of the concept of friendship, there is a relation with the concepts difference and love. The first of them, discuss the otherness and second one, the affective politics in contemporary society. Concerning education, friendship can become an important issue for teacher training - generally focused on technicality - and for the analysis... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
