Shaping popular culture : radio broadcasting, mass entertainment and the work of the BBC Variety Department, 1933-1967Dibbs, Martin G. R. January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the extent to which the BBC was able to shape the output of popular culture on radio in Britain, according to its own system of beliefs, between the years 1933 and 1967. This research will show that from the outset, the BBC was an institution with a mission to inform, educate and entertain the nation. While it was not opposed to entertainment, its focus was didactic and supported a mission to improve its audience both culturally and intellectually. This policy was not always welcomed by the audience but, with the exception of the war years, persisted into mid 1950s. The Variety Department was formed in 1933 to produce all forms of light entertainment and this research will examine how its policies shaped the production of popular culture over the period concerned. This study looks not only at the workings of the Variety Department but also the topics of Americanisation and vulgarity, the two areas in which the BBC had particular sensitivities. It analyses the BBC's strategies to counteract the American effect on popular music and spoken-word programmes and how it provided its own particularly British form of entertainment in order to produce programmes it considered suitable for British audiences. It also investigates programme censorship imposed by the BBC to mitigate vulgarity in programmes, so as to produce those it considered suitable for its audiences. This thesis will contend that for over 40 years the BBC Variety Department produced popular entertainment programmes on radio which became an integral part of people's daily lives until, within a few years radio was superseded by television as the nation's principal provider of domestic entertainment. There has been no discrete study of the BBC Variety Department and it is intended that this research will add to the existing scholarship in BBC history and contribute to the analysis of radio's place in domestic popular culture in the period examined.

They call it the herd : Gestaltningen av Sveriges coronahantering i kommersiella och statliga medierLagerborg, Isabella, Lindström, Victor January 2020 (has links)
Examining how different media news outlets frame the same situation is an important step towards understanding how the world’s media systems behave. This study examines how four influential news media outlets, belonging to different media systems, have framed Sweden's management of the Covid-19 pandemic during two time-periods when the Covid-19 virus surged. These two media systems are state owned news outlets, consisting of RT (previously Russia Today) and Xinhua, and commercial news outlets, through BBC News and the New York Times.ThestudyusesadeductiveFramingTheorymethod, asdefinedbySemetkoand Valkenburg (2000), to understand how the framing of this case differs between the two media systems. Beyond Framing Theory, the theoretical framework is extended by including the Propaganda Model (Durham and Kellner 2012; Fuchs 2018) and Nation Branding (Potter 2009), to further understand the contextual forces that influence the news outlets. The results of the study determines that there are differences in the use of framing between the two media systems as well as where they stem from. This implies that the context in which the outlet finds itself impacts the framing of the produced articles. Overall, Attribution of Responsibility proved to be the most common frame, followed by Conflict framing. The first one wasmostcommoninthestateownedoutlets, whereasConflictwasmostcommonforthe commercial news outlets.

Programmering med BBC micro:bit i grundskolan : En studie som syftar till att underlätta programmeringsundervisningen för högstadielärare / Programming with BBC micro:bit in elementary school : A study that aimes to facilitate the teaching of programmingLeifsdóttir, Petra Íris January 2019 (has links)
As of 2018 the Swedish Government has decided that there should be programming in elementary school. The programming should take place in the subjects of mathematics and technics There weren’t a lot of prepared teachers when the law took effect which has made it difficult for the teachers to follow it. In this project I have made a prototype to try to increase the competence in programming for the teachers. Since there is another project in Kronobergs län, Make it happen, that focuses on the use of BBC micro:bit in school I chose to make the prototype for BBC micro:bit and microPython programming to keep in line with that project. The results indicate that a cloud-based tool that contains both an editor and a Swedish documentation might ease the teaching in elementary schools. For more reliable results however I would need to keep developing the prototype to give it more functionalities and a better documentation that contains more information about microPython. There is also need for more user-testing on the targeted group to make the instrument more reliable.

Branding Images : White Saviorism and Shock Appeals by BBC ThreeLindner, Julianne January 2021 (has links)
This research has focused on the representation of foreign cultures in four BBCdocumentaries. To be more precise, it looked into how public documentariesportray foreign cultures, specifically within a frame of development aid and whitesaviourism when watching documentaries by BBC Three, a channel which iscentred towards a young audience. Previous research on white saviourism andshock appeals analysed movies, documentaries and aid campaigns. Barely anyhave so far researched representation of minorities, foreign cultures and aid topicsin public documentaries. BBC Three is additionally focused only on a youngaudience and blends tv with social media engagement. This is an interesting angleas youth will be the next policy makers and as they are starting to create theirworldview. The research is based upon a visual and textual analysis, followingHall’s encoding/decoding model. It showed that all four documentaries (2016-2018) misrepresent their “subjects” by focusing more on the presenter’sperspective, e.g. concentrating on their emotional responses, asking loadedquestions, giving their opinions and solutions. All four documentaries alsopresented a simplified local situation through Scott’s shock appeals and a badgood guy perspective (where the presenters address the local government andstand up for the helpless subjects). One can therefore state that youth learn aboutforeign cultures through the eyes of a “North” girl/boy next door presenter basingupon a white saviourism perspective. The research additionally related thefindings to Goodman’s theory on iCare capitalism, the emphasis on creating abrand and self-value out of caring for others so that other’s suffering is turned intoa theatre play. This is also visible through BBC Three’s and the presenters’ socialmedia presence. This research opens the discussion and defines a need toresearch the responsibilities of public channels and the impact on youth whendeveloping opinions, views and stereotypes.

Adaptace románu Pes baskervillský: Triumf seriálového sociopata / Adaptations of the novel The Hound of Baskervilles: The triumph of the television serie's sociopathKalčák, Filip January 2021 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the various adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyles novel The Hound of the Baskerville and accentuate the episode The Hounds of Baskervilles from the BBC TV series Sherlock. Thus, this thesis is decribing the theme, which was not fully covered in Czech literature. The author used different sources, books, internet pages and cinematographic pieces. The thesis consists of two parts. In the first part the author is focusing on the theory of adaptation, Doyle's life and art, The Hound of the Baskervilles book and the TV series Sherlock. In the practical part the author narrates about the episode The Hounds of the Baskervilles and searching for definition of the adaptation process, which the makers of this episode used. This part also answers the question, why is this episode so popular and key for the whole series. The crucial final part of the thesis summarizes the main principles, which authors and film makers can use during the process of the adaptation. Keywords Adaptation, television series, Arthur Conan Doyle, BBC, Sherlock, The Hound of the Baskervilles Title/název práce Adaptations of the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles: The triumph of the television series's sociopath

Media Objectivity and Bias in Western Coverage of the Russian-Ukrainian ConflictFisher, Henry O. January 2023 (has links)
The present study seeks to identify if journalistic objectivity is compromised in the coverage of the Russian-Ukrainian war and how the various media bias practices are incorporated into news reports. It provides a critical analysis of the portrayal of conflicting sides of the conflict in Western mainstream media, examining how the "us" versus "them" narratives were constructed and how the produced discourse aligns with the principles of peace journalism. The study uses a combination of critical discourse analysis, semiotic, and narrative analysis methods as well as quantitative content analysis to achieve its objectives. Analyzing the content of twelve articles sourced from BBC and CNN, published across two distinct time frames, reveals that Western media coverage disproportionately represents the Ukrainian perspective, with the Russian standpoint largely marginalized or stereotypically characterized. The findings indicate that Western media also normalize or trivialize the role of neo-Nazi organizations in the conflict while downplaying potential war crimes committed by the Ukrainian side. Quantitative content analysis of 99 articles according to criteria adapted from Galtung's model finds a discernible dominance of war journalism over peace journalism, thus propagating divisive narratives. Comparative findings for each digital outlet suggest that the BBC adopts a more aggressive war journalism modality than CNN. The research advocates for a critical reflection on media coverage, the challenging of media biases, and a strive for a more balanced, peace-oriented portrayal of conflicts.

Väst & Resten : En kvalitativ textanalys av porträttering av flyktingar i medierapportering: En jämförelse mellan 2015 och 2022Jabr, Maya January 2023 (has links)
This study examines the portrayal of refugees in BBC News reports, focusing on postcolonial perspectives in two time periods: 2015 and 2022. The analysis involves language, images, and frameworks used in representing refugees. Findings reveal that in 2015, refugees were depicted as economic migrants, whereas in 2022, Ukrainian refugees were portrayed as genuine victims of war. Factors such as race, gender, religion, and politics influenced their portrayal. This research sheds light on how BBC News represents refugees, impacting public perception. It underscores the importance of critically examining media's portrayal of refugees, considering power relations, especially in major channels claiming neutrality. The study contributes to media studies, refugee studies, and postcolonial theory.

Discourses of Power and Representation in British Broadcasting Corporation Documentary Practices: 1999-2013Thornton, Karen D. January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation re-evaluates the ways in which contemporary
television documentary practices engage their audience. Bringing
together historical frameworks, and using them to analyse a range of
examples not considered together within this context previously, the
main finding is that the use of spectacle to engage the audience into
a visceral response cuts across all of the examples analysed,
regardless of the subject matter being explored.
Drawing on a media archaeological approach, the dissertation draws
parallels with the way in which pre-cinema engaged an audience
where the primary point of engagement came from the image itself,
rather than a narrative. Within a documentary context, which is
generally understood as a genre which is there to educate or inform
an audience, the primacy of spectacle calls for a re-evaluation of the
form and function of documentary itself. Are twenty-first century
documentary practices manufacturing an emotional connection to
engage the audience over attempting to persuade with reasoning
and logic? The answer contained within this dissertation is that they
are.
