A HUG OF LIGHT

Hölbling, Markus January 2021 (has links)
This project is an elaboration of how luminaire design can provide for fundamental human needs. Visual needs in terms of task performance, orientability and visual comfort; emotional needs in terms of soothing feelings of safeness and cosiness; and biological needs in terms of circadian rhythm and resetting of our biological clock in the morning. These needs are tested through three bedroom scenarios named focus, contemplation and dawn, each with their own demands and desires on lighting qualities.  I have submerged into desired lighting qualities and atmosphere in a bedroom context; into how circadian rhythm can be promoted through lighting design; into how the perception of space can be effected through light; into how responsible use of natural resources can be achieved; and finally into what the impact and consequences of the design intervention are. The investigation is performed in a generic bedroom situation without daylight considerations. A prototype has been produced in order to perform observations and measurements.  Through the investigation I can state that luminaire design is able to provide for visual, emotional and biological needs. By simultaneously working with light qualities and shape of the luminaire, and having formulated the specific scenarios focus, contemplation and dawn, qualitative observations and experience could be supplemented by quantitative measurements and drive the design process forward towards intended lighting effects, characteristics and impacts on the human body and mind.

Assessing the import demand of wooden furniture in the United States and its impact on the furniture industry

Wan, Yang 08 August 2009 (has links)
The U.S. furniture industry has faced the challenge from increasing imports of furniture from foreign countries over the last decades. In the first part of this thesis, the import pattern of wooden bedroom furniture and the antidumping investigation against China were summarized, and furthermore, intervention analysis was employed to assess its impacts on the import value and unit price of China. The results revealed that the impact on import values was temporary but there was no significant impact on unit prices. The traditional suppliers have been substituted by the newly developing countries such as China and Vietnam. In the second part of this thesis, to explain the market structure change, a dynamic AIDS model was used to analyze the consumer behavior and evaluate the impacts of antidumping investigation on the major competitors in the second part. The results indicated that most imported wooden bedroom furniture can be substituted between suppliers and trade diversion occurred from China to Vietnam, Indonesia, and Brazil.

Studies on particle resuspension, infant exposure, and the sleep microenvironment

Boor, Brandon Emil 17 September 2015 (has links)
Understanding the transport of particulate and gaseous indoor air pollutants from source to exposure is paramount to improve our understanding of the complexities of the built environments in which we spend the majority of our time. This dissertation offers new insights on particle resuspension from indoor surfaces, infant exposure to organic contaminants released from crib mattresses, and the dynamics of pollutant transport and human exposure while sleeping. Particle resuspension is the physical process by which settled particles detach from a surface and become airborne through application of various aerodynamic and mechanical removal forces. Resuspension is an important indoor source of coarse mode particles (> 1 µm in diameter) and can be a source mechanism for biological matter and organic contaminants that accumulate in house dust. Settled dust deposits on indoor surfaces can vary considerably in their structure and mass loading, yet little is known as to how these parameters affect resuspension. Through wind tunnel experiments, this research demonstrates that the deposit structure (monolayer or multilayer) can have a significant impact on the number of particles that aerodynamically resuspend. Furthermore, this dissertation presents the first full-scale experimental chamber study to show that human body movements in bed can resuspend settled mattress dust particles. An indoor aerosol model was utilized to provide a mechanistic understanding of the impact of movement intensity, surface vibrations, bedroom ventilation rate, and dust loading on the resuspension flux and intake fraction of resuspended particles. Infants spend most of their time sleeping and are likely to be exposed to elevated concentrations of chemicals released from their crib mattresses. Through a combination of chamber experiments and solvent extractions, this research shows that infant crib mattresses can emit a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and contain numerous chemical additives, including phthalate and alternative plasticizers, flame retardants, and unreacted isocyanates. Additionally, this study discovered that infants are exposed to approximately twice the concentrations of VOCs in their breathing zones as compared to the bulk bedroom air, due to their close proximity to the source.

How do bass enhancement algorithms impact mixing decisions when monitoring on headphones?

Enlund, Anders January 2018 (has links)
As music production moves from the big professional studios into small bedroom studios, Headphones become more commonly used for monitoring. This brings a new set of problems based on the limitations of headphones compared to loudspeakers. This research explores how a bass enhancement algorithm impacts the results when mixing low frequency audio on headphones. This is done through a simple mixing experiment where subjects are tasked with balancing the amplitude of a low frequency element in a song, both with and without a bass enhancement algorithm enhancing the headphone monitoring. It is shown that while subjects do not perceive a difference in difficulty with this task, the results differ as subjects overall mix the bass frequencies lower in amplitude when aided by the bass enhancement algorithm. It is concluded that the bass enhancement algorithm is useful in this manner.

Vliv obvyklé pokojové teploty na BMI, resp. prevalenci obezity vybraného vzorku populace / An influence of usual room temperature on BMI or obesity prevalence in a population sample

BEDNAŘÍKOVÁ, Renata January 2017 (has links)
The main aim of the diploma thesis is to determine if BMI (Body Mass Index) in humans is related to the indoor room temperature. Lower room temperature can lead to the activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT), thereby increasing energy expenditure. Because the thermal comfort is individual to some extent, the task is to determine whether there is a correlation between BMI and the frequency of perceived thermal discomfort. The research was attended by 202 respondents in the age range of 3 to 27. All were measured and weighed, and then the temperature habits were recorded through questionnaire. A group of students underwent more detailed data collection. For the evaluation of the data was used PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and regression analysis, for determining the influence of the room temperature, data were weighed by the coefficient of the thermal insulation during the night. The results showed that BMI, respectively the percentile BMI class of respondents in-creases with increasing average bedroom night temperature. Results are less clear for the age categories with no dependency between BMI and room temperature in the youngest age category, significant correlation in adolescent females and adult men, but not signifi-cant correlation in adolescent males and adult females. Evaluation of 87 responses from adolescent and adult respondents to the question regard-ing the frequency of subjective cold feeling showed that the more they felt the coldness in their dwellings, the lower was percentile BMI class and BMI in different age groups. Based on these results we can state that the room temperature during sleep is another sig-nificant factor influencing BMI and lowering the temperature in the homes could lead to the reduction of population obesity.

La chambre de la "mère morte : Etude sur la solitude et la mort / Stendhal and the dead mother’s room : a study on solitude and death

Cho, Seong-Woong 03 February 2012 (has links)
A seven-year-old child, not yet mature enough to comprehend the meaning of death, cannot mourn the loss of his mother, is cruelly punished by his aunt. That boy is Stendhal. Henri Beyle's realization of the images of solitude and death is mainly portrayed in his dead mother's bedroom, which has an erotic and incestuous atmosphere. This study explains the universe of Stendhal's unconscious representation, beginning with this unique theme: his dead mother's room which is filled with the feeling of solitude and death. The specific experience of the room continues to obsess Henri Beyle throughout his life, and his literary works are impelled by the memories or the images of his mother. The poetic images, resulting from the symbolic situation of the room, and obviously solitude and death, are numerous, and express an unconscious process of Stendhal's writing. Whether we consider death as a circumambulation around the theme of solitude, or whether we consider death as what lies inside solitude, death is regarded by Stendhal as a way to get back to his mother. His dead mother's room is both the starting and the ending point. At the heart of the imaginary work sought by Stendhal's protagonists, mother's room is easily found. Art then becomes a way to overcome the obsession with death. It's in the romantic writing that Stendhal found the empty space left by his mother, and his own room. This is the originality of Stendhal's piece.

[en] SUSTAINABILITY STARTS AT BIRTH: CONSUMER ACCEPTANCE OF AN ECO-EFFICIENT SERVICE FOR CHILDREN S BEDROOM INTERIOR DESIGN / [pt] SUSTENTABILIDADE VEM DE BERÇO: ACEITAÇÃO DE UM SERVIÇO ECOEFICIENTE PARA A COMPOSIÇÃO DO QUARTO INFANTIL

JULIA PEREIRA SOARES 01 June 2020 (has links)
[en] This research presents the results of an investigation into the acceptance of a hypothetical eco-efficient service for the reuse of children s bedroom furniture. It was identified that the composition of children s bedroom undergoes constant renovation due to a functional obsolescence. Children s furniture has short-term use as it loses its function to keep pace with child growth and development. This refurbish practice increases furniture consumption and has negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, an eco-efficient service issuggested as a solution to reduce the impacts of this consumption. Eco-efficient services are considered as an innovative strategy in the economy, which through eco-efficient reuse cycles can make the production and consumption system more sustainable. These services are based on the transfer of ownership from the consumer to the producer, who will be responsible for maintaining the eco-efficiency of production and extending product s use life. Research, however, asserts that consumer acceptance of nonownership services faces barriers and is subject to change in consumption behaviour. Literature and field studies were carried out. Field studies were based on semi-structured interviews and consumer-oriented questionnaires. This research identified factors that influence consumer acceptance. Among the most relevant material factors were: the cost-benefit ratio and the perception of service adequacy to bedroom s furniture composition. The most relevant psychosocial factors identified were the symbolic value attributed to new objects, the change in the selfobject relationship and the environmental value of the proposal. It was concluded that, whilst readiness to accept service depends on consumer s perception of service benefits when compared to purchase and ownership, there is a positive attitude towards eco-efficient services.
