To do so, the problem asks: how Chico Buarque, drawing on theatrical and literary resources, as the ones created and discussed by Bertolt Brecht, guarantee a dialectical narrative while proposes a new way of theater in a historical context marked by a dictatorship in Brazil. To achieve our goal, we propose the following hypothesis: Ópera do Malandro (1978) k ; dialectical theory absorbed by Brazilian theater implied a new theater by respecting the demands of each historical context; the irony and parody are procedures that generate a distancing effect on the audience allowing a transforming action. Regarding the development of the theme, our research aims to analyze comparatively the plays Ópera do Malandro , Chico Buarque, and Ópera dos Três Vinténs, . y were important to guide our steps. We highlight the importance of the following scholars: Anatol Rosenfeld, Antonio Cândido, and Mikhail Bakhtin, besides texts of Bertolt Brecht himself. Among the research results, we emphasize that Chico k w k w w strict censorship that took place in Brazil from 1960 and the mid 1980s.

Hitler comedy / Hitlerhoff

Doig, Thomas James January 2009 (has links)
The critical component of this thesis, “Hitler Comedy”, is a dissertation on the intersection between comedy theory in general, and the specific practice of Hitler comedy. Focusing on Bertolt Brecht’s play The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (1941; directed by Heiner Müller in 1995), and Dani Levy’s film Mein Führer: the Truly Truest Truth About Adolf Hitler (2007), my argument critiques existing “instrumentalist” theories of comedy as didactic and morally reductive. Moving beyond prevailing conceptualisations of comedy as corrective and/or forgiving, my dissertation emphasises the centrality of pleasure, displeasure and disruption for audience members in the process of their experiencing Hitler comedies. / The creative component of this thesis is a script and a DVD recording of Hitlerhoff, a theatre and multimedia work that combines the characters of Adolf Hitler and David Hasselhoff into a single hybrid figure. Hitlerhoff is a spectacular black comedy that uses comedy to entertain and unsettle, and to disrupt audience members’ expectations. Hitlerhoff is a practical demonstration of the ability of “irresponsible” comedy to act as a potent catalyst for “responsible”, ethically engaged discussions.

Translating Brecht : versions of "Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder" for the British stage

Williams, Katherine J. January 2009 (has links)
This study analyses five British translations of Bertolt Brecht's 'Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder'. Two of these translations were written by speakers of German, and three by well-known British playwrights with no knowledge of the source text language. Four have been produced in mainstream British theatres in the past twenty-five years. The study applies translation studies methodology to a textual analysis which focuses on the translation of techniques of linguistic "Verfremdung", as well as linguistic expression of the comedy and of the political dimension in the work. It thus closes the gap in current Brecht research in examining the importance of his idiosyncratic use of language to the translation and reception of his work in the UK. The study assesses the ways in which the translator and director are influenced by Brecht's legacy in the UK and in turn, what image of Brecht they mediate through the production on stage. To this end, the study throws light on the formation of Brecht's problematic reputation in the UK, and it also highlights the social and political circumstances in early twentieth century Germany which prompted Brecht to develop his theory of an epic theatre. The focus on a linguistic examination allows the translator's contribution to the production process to be isolated. Together with an investigation of the reception of each performance text, this in turn facilitates a more accurate assessment of the translator and director's respective influence in the process of transforming a foreign-language text onto a local stage. The analysis also sheds light on the different approaches taken by speakers of German, and playwrights creating an English version from a literal translation. It pinpoints losses in translation and adaptation, and suggests how future versions may avoid these.

Politické divadlo Falka Richtera v postdramatickém kontextu / Political theatre of Falk Richter in post-dramatic context

Chvátalová, Martina January 2014 (has links)
(Anglicky) This diploma thesis conducts a survey of dramatic and theatre work of contemporary German dramatist and director Falk Richter (born 1969) in the context of German political theatre of 20th century, thus primarily Brecht and Piscator tradition. At the same time, the concepts of political and post-dramatic theatre are defined and elaborated. The work points out that the current political function of theatre and its chance to directly influence social reality is understood differently than in the case of both pre-war and post-war epic drama by Erwin Piscator and Bertolt Brecht, or in the documentary drama of the 1960s. The key goal of the thesis is to analyze and interpret chosen Richter's dramatic writings and mainly the project Trust, which was created in collaboration with Dutch choreographer Anouk van Dijk. The project can be perceived as a current form of Richter's poetry, which gradually deviates from the "drama" theatre and inclines to motion drama with dance and performance elements. It is showed how the authors deal with present social and personal issues, which are transformed into theatre expression, motion and dance. At last, the thesis examines in what consists the politics of this project.

Cruz, Luiz Gustavo Françoso Pereira da 26 October 2011 (has links)
This study analyses the film Dogville from the concept of work model created by Bertolt Brecht. The objective is to verify by which means the film of Lars von Trier organizes itself like a conscious project in which the dimension of form, content and the friction with the productive apparatus don\'t exclude each other. As teorical assumptions of form conception are the brechtian notion of dialetic image, strangeness and gestus, which will serve as base of research to the thematic field of Dogville, rounding the work relations. The study also discusses the effects of the theater structure with epic tendencies inside the cinematic dramatic form, the self-criticism sense, and the reasons of its impact as critic of the contemporary productive apparatus.
