Uneasy bedfellows : South Korea’s state-chaebol relations

Myong, Su Yun 11 1900 (has links)
Many studies on Korean economic development exist, but few scholarly works specifically address the relationship between the state and big business groups called the chaebol. The state-chaebol relationship is an important aspect of Korean economic development, but conventional analyses fail to capture the subtleties of the dynamic and tend to moralize rather than elucidate. This study argues that predominantly negative perceptions of close government-business relations tend to obscure the significant positive effects of close co-ordination and collaboration between the state and private capital. It is not the closeness per se that matters as much as the nature and dynamic of the relationship. Moreover, a more careful look at the state-chaebol nexus reveals a relationship in flux, in contrast to the rather static image provided in the media. Assuming that close government-business collaboration poses serious challenges to the economy, effective prescriptions must then be based on accurate diagnoses. Failing to understand the complexities of the state-business nexus prevents one from accurately diagnosing the roots of the current economic problems currently facing Korea. This thesis examines the political factors that influenced state-chaebol relations in South Korea. The causes and the importance of those factors are analyzed in terms of particular economic strategies adopted by the government, aspects of domestic politics, the economic and political influence of the chaebol and the international environment. / Arts, Faculty of / Political Science, Department of / Graduate

Nordlund, Therese January 2005 (has links)
This thesis investigates leadership in Swedish business during the period of 1900-1950. The main aim is to explore the relationship between entrepreneurship and leadership and how the leader uses his social competence, both inside and outside the company, to enhance economic and organisational change. The study focuses on two main characters: Axel Ax:son Johnson (1876-1958), manager and owner of Johnsonkoncernen (The Johnson group), and J. Sigfrid Edström (1870-1964), professional manager of ASEA (today ABB). They represented Swedish capitalism in its golden years. The study uses archives previously never opened to researchers. To understand how and why leadership have changed during the 20th century, the theoretical framework is based on the concepts of entrepreneurship, paternalism, network and charisma. Leadership involves communication. The corporate leader in the early 20th century had to build networks both of stronger and looser types, each of these two types with a different aim, but with the ambition to care for the company’s best interest. Johnson and Edström used their personality to attain more power inside the company as well as to attract attention from the outside. This thesis shows that if the leaders took advantage of their social communication skills they could create new combinations, which could benefit their companies. Therefore, the leader had to bring out the best in his co-workers, in order to attract new ideas, competence and entrepreneurial skills around him. The leader did not only involve himself in networks with fellow industrialists, but also with Social Democrats and journalists. Johnson and Edström had to be leaders not only within the company but also in the surrounding society. They involved themselves in many other areas; in the local community and as opinion builders. The patriarchal strategies still proved fruitful during the period. Yet, modern strategies connected to large organizations and bureaucratic methods were also introduced. It was hard for the employees to accept these changes. If the companies would expand, the leader could attract admirers and followers who fully accepted the leadership and strategies. The leader had to become an entrepreneur with a will to encourage others.

Panizzon, Mateus 30 September 2010 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-06-02T18:37:17Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Mateus Panizzon.pdf: 3058509 bytes, checksum: c437465a0948516e0e660ba039bab7cd (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-06-02T18:37:17Z (GMT). It has been identified a gap of empirical studies that seek to relate CI with Top Management Involvement, an essential factor for the development of this activity within the organization. More than initial support of resources and legitimacy, Top Management Involvement presupposes the commitment and continuous participation of the Top Management in programs of this nature, a behavior that can be of significant influence for its success or failure. So, this research aimed to analyze the relationship between Top Management Involvement and the Context and Process dimensions of Competitive Intelligence Model in medium and large companies of Serra Gaúcha Brazil. Also, it has been proposed to learn about the level of CI development level in the region, limited to organizations of this size, and to explore the relations between Top Management Involvement, Competitive Intelligence and Performance at this organizations. Thus, a descriptive and quantitative research was carried out, based on a survey sample of 160 organizations, measured by scales proposed by another international studies and based on the theoretical model of context and process of IC. Results indicated that there is positive relationship between Top Management Involvement and the IC Development Level at the medium and large companies at Serra Gaúcha, and three out of four scenarios proposed can be perceived. Also there is a positive association between IC, Organizational Performance, Top Management Involvement and IC integration with the decision making process of these organizations. In general, it was observed that most of these companies developed some kind of monitoring (information collecting), even though they do not nominate this activity as "Intelligence". The main focus of monitoring are Sales, Competitors and Innovation in Products, which indicates a beginning of this field development in the companies of this region.d

La gestion et la prévention du stress professionnel et des RPS dans les TPE et les grandes entreprises / Management and prevention of stress at work and psychosocial risks in very small business and large business

Sall, Deede 05 October 2017 (has links)
This thesis is based on a qualitative and comparative study carried out in two Very smallbusinesses (less than ten (10) employees) and two Big businesses (more than five thousand(5.000) employees). The objective is to understand and explain, on the one hand, howprofessional stress is built up according to the size of the company and, on the other hand, thedrivers or constraints to the prevention and management of stress in businesses. I have therefore been interested in socio-professional representations of stress, social relations withinthe company and the expression or not of grievance. I also study forms of pain management atwork and conflicts regulation. Analyzing collective and individual expectations as well as thelife stories of workers confronted with similar realities but reacting differently, made itpossible to learn lessons about workers relationship to discontent. This research has shown that, contrary to what one might think, it is not so much the problemsto be managed which differ according to the business size but the ways to build, regulate andlive with these issues.
