Risk perception and differences in self-reported cycling behavior between electric- and conventional-bike riders in Denmark

Electric bikes can contribute to the decrease of emissions and present a carbon-positive alternative to gaspowered forms of motorized transport. Hence, the fact that both conventional and e-bike use have increased considerably during the Covid-19 pandemic can be considered as a positive development. At the same time, studies find that e-bike riders are traveling with higher speeds, and report new types of safety incidents, that they did not experience during conventional cycling. Risk related behavior of e-bike and c-bike riders has frequently been linked to crash-risk and injury severity [6][7]. But little research has been conducted on the comparison of self-reported risk related behavior between e-bike and conventional bike (c-bike) riders. Hence, in this study, the self-reported risk-related behavior of c-bik.e and e-bike riders was investigated.

La preocupación en la actualidad del transporte público nos obliga a fomentar la implementación de medios de transporte sostenibles y saludables. Por este motivo, se propone con esta investigación localizar adecuadamente las estaciones de bicicletas y de esta forma reducir los tiempos de viaje en bicicleta en el distrito de San Borja. En el primer capítulo formularemos la realidad problemática, formulación del problema de transporte y algunos antecedentes de estudios similares en diferentes países con resultados positivos. También desarrollaremos los objetivos generales, objetivos específicos y las limitaciones de la investigación. En el segundo capítulo se describirá el marco teórico de la metodología para la localización óptima de estaciones de bicicletas, los modelos de microsimulación y la propuesta de mejora. Asimismo, definiremos los tipos de modelo de tránsito, algunas consideraciones que serán necesarias para realizar los análisis de los resultados que se obtengan. En el tercer capítulo describiremos la metodología que se utiliza desde la recolección de datos para la metodología de máxima cobertura y el modelo de microsimulación debidamente calibrado y validado. También, se detallará la aplicación de la metodología de máxima cobertura (ArcGIS) y la construcción del modelo de simulación en el software VISSIM. En el cuarto capítulo se presentan el análisis de las estaciones utilizando el modelo de máxima cobertura, localización de las estaciones optimas, la reducción de viajes del estado actual y el de los escenarios propuestos y por último los resultados de la comparación. En el último capítulo se encontrarán las conclusiones y recomendaciones a las que se llegaron respondiendo así el objetivo general de la presente tesis. / The current public transport concern forces us to encourage the implementation of sustainable and healthy means of transport. For this reason, it is proposed with this research to properly locate the bicycle stations and thus reduce the travel times by bicycle in the district of San Borja. In the first chapter we will formulate the problematic reality, formulation of the transport problem and some background of similar studies in different countries with positive results. We will also develop the general objectives, specific objectives and limitations of the investigation. In the second chapter, the theoretical framework of the methodology for the optimal location of bicycle stations, microsimulation models and the proposal for improvement will be described. Likewise, we will define the types of traffic model, some considerations that will be necessary to perform the analysis of the results obtained. In the third chapter we will describe the methodology used since the data collection for the maximum coverage methodology and the microsimulation model duly calibrated and validated. Also, the application of the maximum coverage methodology (ArcGIS) and the construction of the simulation model in the VISSIM software will be detailed. In the fourth chapter the analysis of the stations is presented using the maximum coverage model, location of the optimal stations, the reduction of trips of the current state and that of the proposed scenarios and finally the results of the comparison. In the last chapter you will find the conclusions and recommendations that were reached in response to the general objective of this thesis. / Tesis

El presente proyecto se crea con el principal propósito de implementar un negocio factible para la creación de una empresa que comercializa muebles organizadores de bicicletas, patines, y scooters; a través de dos productos: DISOR Kids y DISOR Adults. En estos mercados, se observó la problemática del desorden generado en los hogares al no tener asignado un espacio específico a dichos vehículos sobre ruedas. Asimismo, existe la necesidad por mantener su hogar con una decoración atractiva y armoniosa tanto en el interior como en el exterior, incluso más cuando se trata de espacios pequeños. Por esta razón que se observa una oportunidad para un producto que combine atributos de un diseño innovador y funcional. Se considera, además, que uno de los aspectos determinantes para el público es la exclusividad en productos tan personales como lo son los muebles del hogar. Para que el negocio se lleve a cabo de manera factible, se plantearon estrategias que permitirán que DISOR se desenvuelva en un mercado altamente competitivo dentro del rubro mobiliario y diferenciar a DISOR como un producto que todos los posibles clientes deberían tener, así como mantenerlos fidelizados gracias a un servicio de venta y post venta personalizado. / The present project has been created with the main purpose of implementing a feasible business for the creation of a company that commercializes furniture organizers of bicycles, skates, and scooters; through two products: DISOR Kids and DISOR Adults. The problem of the disorder generated in the homes was observed in this market due to not having assigned a specific space to said vehicles on wheels. Also, there is a need to keep their home with an attractive and harmonious decoration both inside and outside, even more when it comes to small spaces. For this reason, an opportunity is observed for a product that mix attributes of an innovative and functional design. It is also considered that one of the determining factors for the public is the exclusivity in products as personal as the home furniture. Art, for all its apparent simplicity is anything but straightforward. I admire and strive to make work that, when first introduced is both comfortable and exciting. I aim for work that is true to its medium. I want my work to be approachable, inviting, though questioning and introspective just the same. I think art should make the world a better place. I admire the technicality that is inherent to minimalism. I think at the least, an acceptable piece of art should be an insight into the world of the viewer.

Hoy en día, nuestra sociedad está contemplando diversos problemas dentro del manejo de tiempo, salud, tráfico y medio ambiente. Es por ello, que muchas personas han dejado de utilizar el medio de transporte convencional (autos, buses, taxis, etc.)  y han comenzado a utilizar un medio de transporte alternativo que beneficia tanto a la salud del usuario como a la protección del medio ambiente. Estos medios de transporte son en su mayoría bicicletas, las cuales han tenido un aumento en su demanda de un 25% respecto al año anterior. Este incremento en la demanda está influenciado por la gran cantidad de millennials que buscan proteger su salud y el medio ambiente. Sin embargo, la mayoría de estos usuarios no utilizan implementos de seguridad. A pesar de que su uso sólo es obligatorio en ciertos distritos los usuarios de igual manera no lo utilizan, en especial el casco que es el implemento de seguridad más importante. Después de realizar entrevistas a diferentes usuarios logramos identificar cuáles eran los factores clave por lo cual no utilizaban casco como el precio y la comodidad. Con esta información, desarrollamos un casco que puede reducir su tamaño para poder llevarlo dentro de tu mochila o cartera a un precio que se encuentra dentro del rango de la competencia. Es por ello, que con el presente trabajo buscaremos validar si nuestro producto será rentable a través de validaciones, concierge y ventas para demostrar que nuestro producto si es deseado por el usuario. / Today, our society is contemplating various problems within the management of time, health, traffic and the environment. That is why many people have stopped using the conventional means of transport (cars, buses, taxis, etc.) and have begun to use an alternative means of transport that benefits both the health of the user and the protection of the environment. . These means of transport are mostly bicycles, which have had an increase in demand of 25% over the previous year. This increase in demand is influenced by the large number of millennials who seek to protect their health and the environment. However, most of these users do not use security implements. Although its use is only mandatory in certain districts, users do not use it in the same way, especially the helmet that is the most important safety device. After conducting interviews with different users, we were able to identify what were the key factors, so they did not use a helmet such as price and comfort. With this information, we develop a helmet that can reduce its size to be able to carry it inside your backpack or purse at a price that is within the range of the competition. Observing the Impact of an Engineering-Based Unit of Instruction on 6th Grade Students' Attitudes Towards Engineering as theyEngage in Building Electric Bikes

In the past few decades, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education has become a driving force for innovators throughout the world (Atkinson & Mayo, 2010; Bybee, 2010). STEM education has also become an economic factor in developing countries (Kennedy & Odell, 2014). Currently, many countries are struggling with how to effectively promote STEM education. The United States (U.S.) provides an interesting case study. Despite being one of the global economic leaders, it is behind in STEM education compared to other nations (Atkinson & Mayo, 2010; Dugger, 2010). STEM education helps to build world leaders including marketable and knowledgeable employees because it teaches and exposes students to problems in the real world, especially in their community (Brown, Brown, Reardon, & Merrill, 2011; Gomez & Albrecht, 2013). Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to answer the question: how does designing and implementing an engineering-based unit of instruction impact student attitudes toward engineering for 6th graders? The method for implementing more engineering consisted of teaching a unit based around mechanical engineering, civil engineering, city planning, and public health to 6th graders. The heart of the unit was an activity that allowed the students to make electric bikes by engaging in the engineering processes of hands-on learning and problem-solving, while evaluating transportation to and from school. The data was collected using two methods. The first used a survey instrument called the Technology and Engineering Attitudes Scale (TEAS), the second method involved observing and interviewing the participants. The results reveal that student interest in engineering increased after participating in the study. Another key finding is that with more engineering experience, student confidence for problem-solving and engineering activities increased.

An in-depth understanding of powered micro-mobility safety issues

The fast-growing market of powered micro-mobility, including electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters), has introduced a paradigm shift in mobility across the world. These emerging transport modes have frequently been referred to as convenient mobility, having playfulness and transport functions. However, one of the main obstacles to the safe adoption of these transport modes is the safety issues related to their use. Based on the cycling literature, the interaction of vulnerable road users with each other could be classified based on the encounter directions. More specifically, passing is referred to as same-direction encounters, and meeting demonstrates opposite-direction encounters. Experiments and observations have been applied in this research domain for data collection, while interview setups are less conducted to explore users' opinions about their interactions. In this study, we conducted a series of semi-structured interviews and scrutinised e-bike and e-scooter users' safety issues in motorised and non-motorised facilities (e.g. shoulder lanes and sidewalks). In January, 2009, I joined Bikes Across Borders, a local grassroots organization, on their yearly bike caravan to Mexico. The group works to promote bicycles, both here and in Mexico, as an environmentally and financially sound alternative to motorized transportation. Each winter, members ride bicycles they build out of salvaged parts to border cities in Mexico. They give these bicycles to maquiladora workers who would otherwise spend a large portion of their income on transportation. These workers make a fraction of what they would in the U.S. and live in shacks amid the pollution from the factories they work in. This is the story of one group’s attempt at making a difference in the lives of these workers. / text

Synchronizing vans and cargo bikes in a city distribution network

One of the significant side-effects of growing urbanization is the constantly increasing amount of freight transportation in cities. This is mainly performed by conventional vans and trucks and causes a variety of problems such as road congestion, noise nuisance and pollution. Yet delivering goods to residents is a necessity. Sustainable concepts of city distribution networks are one way of mitigating difficulties of freight services. In this paper we develop a two-echelon city distribution scheme with temporal and spatial synchronization between cargo bikes and vans. The resulting heuristic is based on a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure with path relinking. In our computational experiments we use artificial data as well as real-world data of the city of Vienna. Furthermore we compare three distribution policies. The results show the costs caused by temporal synchronization and can give companies decision-support in planning a sustainable city distribution concept.
