Eco Friendly Composites Prepared from Lactic Acid Based Resin and Natural Fiber

Esmaeili, Nima, Javanshir, Shahrzad January 2014 (has links)
Lactic acid based thermoset were synthesised by reacting lactic acid with glycerol andfunctionalizing lactic acid branches by methacrylic anhydride. Resins with different chainlength were prepared and their thermo mechanical properties were examined through DMAanalysis and their molecular structures were analyzed by NMR method and their viscositywere investigated through rheometry analysis and three monomers were selected as the bestchain length. Degree of reaction in different reaction times was evaluated by a modifiedtitration method and bulk preparation of resin was performed by optimal process condition.DSC analysis was conducted in order to evaluate curing behaviour of resin with benzoylperoxide as cross-linking initiator. TGA analysis was performed to check thermo stability ofthe resin. Bio composites by viscose unidirectional and bidirectional knitted fabrics and alsonon woven viscose fiber with different fiber loads were prepared by ordinary hand layupimpregnation followed by compress moulding and their mechanical and thermo mechanicalproperties were characterized by tensile, flexural, charpy and DMA analysis and optimumfiber loads were identified for each fiber type. Ageing properties of prepared composites wereexamined by placing samples in climate chamber to simulate long time ageing and ageingexperiment was followed by tensile and flexural test to evaluate mechanical properties afterageing simulation. Composite`s swelling properties for water and some other solvents wereinvestigated and also their chemical resistance were evaluated by immersing them in 1M HCland KOH. The resin was also compared with a commercial oil based thermoset by preparingglass fiber reinforced composites and also effect of adding styrene to the resin were evaluated. Results of this work demonstrated that the novel synthesised have very high mechanical andthermo mechanical properties surpassing commercial oil based poly esters but ageingbehaviour is not very good however adding styrene can improve ageing properties. Also theresin is compatible with cellulosic natural fibers and forms strong composites. / Program: Masterutbildning i energi- och material

Transformation of lignin into biobased thermoset

Cederholm, Linnea January 2018 (has links)
Combined microwave assisted extraction/degradation of technical lignin in green solvents was successfully employed to generate polyphenolic oligomers with lower Mw than the starting material. For Lignoboost, the highest liquid yield (65 %) was obtained in 20 min at 160 °C using ethanol as solvent. This is an increase in ethanol soluble yield with 38 % compared to solvent extraction. The highest yield for Lignosulfonate was obtained with methanol as solvent, at 160 °C for 20 min. Obtained liquid fractions were analysed by SEC, FT-IR, DSC, TGA, 31P-NMR and 2D-HSQC NMR in order to explain the mechanism of the increased yield, and to study the structural changes after microwave extraction/degradation. 2D-NMR indicates cleavage of β-O-4 inter-unit linkages, but also that some modification around the bond could take place. Lignin based thermosets were synthesised employing the polyesterification between lignin, citric acid and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). It was concluded that introduction of PEG into the system was crucial for a homogenous thermoset synthesis with a high gel content. From TGA analysis it could be concluded that the thermoset based on original Lignoboost had a lower thermal stability than the counterparts prepared from lower molecular weight fractions. This implies that the esterification reaction between original Lignoboost and the other co-monomers is obstruct by sterically hindrance, which means that pre-conditioning is positive for the final material properties.

Synthesis and characterization of tall oil fatty acid based thermoset resin suitable for natural fiber reinforced composite

Chen, Rong January 2012 (has links)
Biobased thermoset resins were synthesized by functionalizing the tall oil fatty acid with hydrogen peroxide and then methacrylic anhydride. The obtained resins were characterized by FTIR to confirm the conversions. The cross-linking ability of the resins were checked by curing experiments and followed by DSC analysis regarding the extent of cross linking. TGA analysis was conducted to identify the thermal degradation patterns of cured resins. The obtained resins (blended with or without 33wt% styrene) were used as matrix and knitted viscose fibers were used as reinforcements to make bio-based composites. Ten layers of knitted viscose fibers were stacked crosswise (0/90⁰С) and hand lay-up impregnation was performed. The fiber ratio of all composites was around 63-66%. The composites were characterized by flexural testing, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and charpy testing. This work demonstrates that manufacture of composites with both matrix and reinforcement fiber coming from renewable resources is feasible, and the resulted composites have satisfied mechanical performance. / Program: MSc in Resource Recovery - Sustainable Engineering

Biobased Photocurable Resins for 3D-Printing of Self-Healable & Recyclable Thermosets / Biobaserade, UV-härdbara resin för 3D-utskrift av självläkande och återvinningsbara härdplaster

Gardell, Anna, Aspenberg, Maria, Aziz, Julia January 2022 (has links)
One of the main causes of the petrochemical depletion is the overconsumption of single-use plastic products. New strategies based on the production of plastics (in particular thermosets) starting from bio-based resources are, therefore, demanded. Previous research has shown how vanillin-based vitrimer resins can be photocured into thermally reprocessable, chemically recyclable and self-healable imine thermosets; and the potential of the light-assisted 3D-printing techniques for the photocuring of resins with great accuracy and flexibility.  In this study, three different photocurable biobased vitrimer resins were synthesized through a two-step procedure involving the methacrylation of vanillin and the Schiff-base reaction with two different diamines (ethylenediamine, EDA; 2,2′-(Ethylenedioxy) bis(ethylamine), EDEA) and a triamine (trimethylolpropane tris[poly(propylene glycol), amine terminated] ether, T-403). The resins were analyzed in order to find the most suitable one for DLP 3D-printing. The resin with EDA, as diamine, could not be successfully UV-cured into a thermoset. The other two thermosets showed good thermal stability, up to about 300 °C, while still being thermally reprocessable. In addition, the thermosets were promising in terms of self-healability and chemical recyclability. The thermoset obtained from the Schiff-base resin synthesized with the diamine EDEA provided the shortest curing time. This resin also displayed good solvent resistance against common solvents and potential chemical recyclability in hexylamine through an imine exchange reaction. As a final step, the possibility to obtain tridimensional thermosets by curing this resin with a DLP 3D-printing was successfully demonstrated.
