Libro, diaspora e ri-costruzioni identitarie.

Faiolo, Chiara <1976> 16 June 2010 (has links)
The work traces the route that the Portuguese Jews, exiles after the 1496-97 biennium, followed on their journey through Europe. In particular, interest focuses on the brief Italian period, which is rich in events and characters decisive also for the cultural history of Portugal, thank to the openness of some Princes and Lords, as the Gonzaga of Mantua, the Medicis, the Doges of Venice and the Este family. The analysis starts by highlighting the importance that the Hebrew typography had in Portugal at the time of its introduction in the country, than traces the path that leads to the birth of Inquisition in Portugal, starting from the first expulsion act and the subsequent forced mass baptism. The second chapter tries a reconstruction as complete and consistent as possible of the wanderings of exiles, branded as Marranos and linked to two major families, Mendes and Bemveniste, outlining the nucleus of what will become in the seventeenth century the Sephardic Portuguese community in Amsterdam, which gave the dissident personalities of Uriel da Costa and his student Spinoza. The third chapter introduces the theme of literary works, performing a survey of the main volumes published by the Jewish presses who settled in Italy between 1551 and 1558, especially focusing on the activity of the Usque typography, which produced many Hebrew prayer books, and works as crucial as the famous Spanish Ferrara Bible, Samuel Usque’s Consolação às Tribulações de Israel, and the collection composed by Bernardim Ribeiro’s knight novel Menina e Moça and the eclogue Crisfal, written by an author not yet identified. The last chapter, finally, tries to analyze these three works, which are fundamental to reconstruct the literary and cultural context in which the exile Jewish community acted and projected its hopes for the future. Even if the three works belong to different genres and show different character, the hypothesis is that they are part of a philosophical and spiritual unicum, which basically aimed to show the brethren scattered across Europe the way to go, providing a theoretical, psychological and emotional support in the difficult survival conditions, especially of the religious integrity of each member of the community.

Jewish Women’s Transracial Epistemological Networks: Representations of Black Women in the African Diaspora, 1930-1980

Gondek, Abby S 21 March 2018 (has links)
This dissertation investigates how Jewish women social scientists relationally established their gendered-racialized subjectivities and theories about race-gender-sexuality-class through their portrayals of black women’s sexuality and family structures in the African Diaspora: the U.S., Brazil, South Africa, Swaziland, and the U.K. The central women in this study: Ellen Hellmann, Ruth Landes, Hilda Kuper, and Ruth Glass, were part of the same “political generation,” born in 1908-1912, coming of age when Jews of European descent experienced an ambivalent and conditional assimilation into whiteness, a form of internal colonization. I demonstrate how each woman’s familial origin point in Europe, parental class and political orientations, were important factors influencing her later personal/professional networks and social science theorizing about women of color. However, other important factors included the national racial context, the political affiliations of her partners, her marital status and her transracial fieldwork experiences. One of the main problems my work addresses is how the internal colonization process in differing nations within the Jewish diaspora differently affected and positioned Jewish social scientists from divergent class and political affiliations. Gendering Aamir Mufti’s primarily male-oriented argument, I demonstrate how Jewish internal divergences serve as an example that highlights the lack of uniformity within any “identity” group, and the ways that minority groups, like Jews, use measures of “abnormal” gender and sexuality, to create internal exiled minorities in order to try to assimilate into the majority colonizing culture. My dissertation addresses three problems within previous studies of Jewish social scientists by creating a gendered analysis of the history of Jews in social science, an analysis of Jewish subjectivity within histories of women (who were Jewish) in social science, and a critique of the either-or assumption that Jewishness necessarily equated with a “radical” anti-racist approach or a “colonizing” stance toward black communities. The data collection followed a mixed methods approach, incorporating archival research, ethnographic object analysis, site visits in Brazil and South Africa, consultations with library, archive and museum professionals, and interviews with scholars connected to the core women in the study.

[en] AFFIRMATIVE DESIGN IN BLACK DIASPORA CONTEXTS IN THE BRAZILIAN ANIMATED TELEVISION SERIES / [pt] DESIGN AFIRMATIVO EM CONTEXTOS AFRODIASPÓRICOS NA ANIMAÇÃO SERIADA BRASILEIRA

SANDRO LOPES DOS SANTOS 17 December 2020 (has links)
[en] This thesis aims to register Affirmative Design as a spreader of reparative actions in favor of the resignification of what it is to be black in an Afrodiasporic context. It enunciates the strength of a design built in the struggle, the result of the wisdom of black movements based on an Afro-Brazilian, African and black diaspora worldview. It is in this field of design plus affirmative action that Affirmative Design acts, creating sensitive conditions for the valuation of marginalized groups, enhancing and disseminating their knowledge in the sense of social equity. The research focuses on the intertwining between design and animation and its way of transmitting messages, in which the idealization, construction and purpose of these meanings are conditioned by their artistic, cultural, social and economic context. We highlight the understanding of animation as a projective practice, such as design, responsible for social interaction. In order to carry out the research, it was necessary to understand the growth of production and the imagery representation of national characters, according to their race and ethnicity. The research was developed by analyzing the programming of the five main children s pay tv channels, based on the listings of Brazilian works broadcast on pay tv available by OCA - Brazilian Observatory of Cinema and Audiovisual - of Ancine, between 2016 and 2017. In addition, in the search for productions with multicultural characteristics, semi-structured interviews were conducted with black animators, starting from the reflections derived from the debates established by the black live action cinema, which constituted an understanding of what would be an animation called black. Expanding the perception on the subject, the audience s discernment about the animations watched by children was captured, through online forms with parents and teachers, which allowed us to collect data about characters and narratives. The epistemological paradigm that guided the research determined for design the intrinsic epistemic value of black social movements and recognized that they are producers of a specific type of wisdom, the knowledge born in the struggle. This new knowledge, generated by non-hegemonic and counter-hegemonic groups, creates new themes, concepts and boosts knowledge. Thus, it was learned from this study that Affirmative Design is a critical and resistance design with a political agenda of transformation focused particularly at the identity construction that recognizes the individual as such and places him in the world in a condition of equality, considering his self-image, his values and strengthening his corporeality and thinking in opposition to the effects of discrimination.
