The feasibility of getting books into South African supermarkets

Bekker, Ryno 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / The book industry in South Africa is under severe pressure the last couple of years. The reason why the book industry in South Africa is under severe pressure is because of various reasons; one of the reasons is that the South African Government is spending less each year on education, specifically on school text books. As per the Willem Struik (2009) during the SABA conference in Durban, government has spend by more than 87% less on school text books. There is a further challenge for Publishers in order to generate more sales and that is that digitalization has a big impact on the turnover of publishers. The study is not doing an in-depth research on digitalisation and the impact thereof. The biggest impact that digitalisation has on the book industry and specific to publishers is that the gross profit is less for a digital book than a physical book. The main reason why the gross profit (GP) is less for a digital book is because all input costs remain the same for a digital and physical book, it is only the logistics where there is a cost saving (no more warehousing and physical distribution). The study analysis the potential additional revenue there is for publishers if they were to decide to supply to Supermarkets and not to the traditional book outlets only. The study as per Appendix A clearly indicates that there is definitely more revenue for the publishers to make if they were to supply books to supermarkets. The study also identifies that there are basically four role players in the business concept of supplying books to supermarkets and they are the publisher, retailer, logistics company and the end-consumer. The study indicates that in order for the business concept of supplying books to supermarkets to be successful all four role players have to believe in this concept and agree on the terms conditions from the various parties.

Lazzari, Alessandra de January 2012 (has links)
The Brazilian Book Industry is crossing a time of changes. The adoption of digital reading and learning technologies tends to change the structure of the industry and its operations. The industry is already being modified by concentration and entrance of international players in the Brazilian Market. Significant changes has taken place in the United States Book Industry due to the growth of e-books sales, however it is not clear if they will repeat their role in Brazil. This work aims to identify trends and uncertainties that may influence the development of possible futures and to plan scenarios for the Brazilian Book Industry. To reach these objectives, it uses the method developed by Paul Schoemaker (1995), whose application made use of data collected by desk research, participant observation and industry analysis based on Value Net technique (Nalebuff & Brandenburger, 1996). As results, it identifies trends and uncertainties to monitor and describes two scenarios for this Industry.

Éthique des technologies et systèmes d'information : usages individuels, positionnement moral des organisations et changements sociotechniques : cas du livre numérique / Information technology ethics, usages and sociotechnical changes : the case of eBook in the book industry

Sarr, Lamine 08 December 2015 (has links)
The development of information technologies (IT), and their increasing application in most of human activities have led at the same time to the emergence of many issues, and the renewal of various moral questions relating to the IT usage. This research is incorporated within this general framework of analysis of IT ethics, and is applied to the specific context of the book industry, which is currently experiencing a profound transformation due to the development of the eBook technology. The findings of this research show at first, the extent and the diverse aspects of users' individual ethics, and the moral positioning of organizations towards IT usage. Secondly, results reveal the socio-technical changes brought by eBook in the book industry and their ethical perceptions from the book chain actors. Finally, the study presents a theoretical model for understanding the explanatory factors of ethical versus unethical usage of eBook.

The impact of Large Language Models on the publishing sectors : Books, academic journals, newspapers

Kulesz, Octavio January 2023 (has links)
This paper examines the potential impact of Large Language Models (LLMs) in the press and in the production of books and academic journals. LLMs, such as OpenAI’s GPT-3, are trained on massive text corpora and can predict the next word in a given context through probabilistic methods. They have demonstrated autonomy and versatility in a variety of tasks, including question answering, translation, summarization, text classification, and code generation from natural language instructions. The paper discusses the trends, opportunities, and challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) and LLMs in the publishing industries, as well as the existing research on these topics. It also conducts experiments and operations with GPT-3 to explore its potential benefits and limitations, and offers reflections on the medium- and long-term impact of LLMs in those sectors.
