THE SPATIALITY IN STORYTELLINGYu, Xiang 13 July 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Theatre has always been played a irreplaceable role in people’s lives, even nowadays where people have multiple choices for entertainment. Some theater architecture has also become the symbol of the city, such as Paris Opéra and Sydney Opera House. By taking a close look at various case studies, one will understand how the theatre architecture corresponds with their city representing its history, culture and visions for the future.
The development of my thesis is based on the integration of the ‘space’ of storytelling and the space of design. Will the quality of space bring out the memories that have been stored with in it? How the space provide with most flexibility for its users? Explorations in acoustic and lighting design as well as the spectators’ experience in the space will be discussed. My attention is to create a design that will heighten perception and arouse the audience’s sensory experience even before the start of the show.
The relationship between nature and the architecture is also one of my attentions. Questions arise such as how to use a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the intersection of architecture and landscape. Should the architecture become a new definition towards the context or an expression that abstract from the landscape? This thesis explores the relationship between the performer and audience, and how the architecture space can contribute to the theater experience. The design for this project offers one solution for the whole site serving as a place for performing arts as well as a public space and a destination for the city of Boston.

Living With the Redcoats: Anglo-American Response to the Quartering Acts, 1756-1776Lee, Hyun Wu 07 May 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to explore the nature and language of Anglo-American opposition to quartering from the start of the French and Indian War in 1756 to the Revolutionary War in 1776. This paper will also attempt to demonstrate the shifting focus of Anglo-American arguments against the quartering of troops over these two decades. Quartering of troops in private homes and defraying the cost of quartering were the prevalent concerns of Anglo-Americans during the French and Indian War. Then, the Quartering Act of 1765 significantly changed the perception of Anglo-Americans toward quartering of troops as a matter of illegal taxation. Lastly, the unfolding events in 1768 and onwards, in Boston, marked a turning point as the fear of a standing army in peace time redefined Anglo-American opposition to the quartering of redcoats. The significance of Anglo-American opposition to the Quartering Acts paled in comparison to other colonial grievances that stemmed from taxation issues, but it was important enough to finds its place in the Declaration of the Independence and in the Third Amendment of the federal constitution. / Master of Arts

A phenomenological understanding of an image of a city: touching water in waterfront citiesIshii, Nobuyuki 18 April 2009 (has links)
This thesis attempts to grasp the creation of an image of a city, taking the case of waterfront cities where the presence of water becomes a sense of place. A phenomenological method was employed for investigating actual waterfront cities: Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco. Although a single method has yet to be established for studying a sense of place, phenomenology was adopted because it deals with the relationship between an environment and the experience of that environment. This thesis found some common qualities between these cities in their forms. These qualities seem to have a certain relationship to the creation of the images of these waterfront cities. This study also brought up the question of how to evaluate personal experiences phenomenologically. They are related to the basis of this thesis. This shows us the difficulty of practicing the phenomenology and the profundity of studying an image of a city. At the same time, it is a step for further study. / Master of Landscape Architecture
