Seismic refraction survey of crustal and upper mantle structures in the West Philippine Basin

Goodman, Dean 15 April 1983 (has links)
Crustal and upper mantle structures in the West Philippine Basin, along 17-18°N, have been determined using explosions as sources and ocean bottom seismometers to measure refracted compressional waves. Seismic refraction profiles out to nearly 500 km were completed. Shallow structure was measured using small shots, 1-240 lbs., and the deeper structure was probed with large explosions, 0.9-1.8 tons. A velocity-depth inversion using short range data shows the upper crust to have strong velocity gradients which gradually decrease with depth. The lower crust is characterized by a nearly constant velocity gradient of 0.24 sec⁻¹. Standard delay-time functions and a modified function accounting for lateral velocity gradients were also used in travel time inversion. Results from the two methods are comparable and yield ~1.5 km transitional zone thicknesses in the basin. Although they vary slightly in magnitude between methods, West Philippine Basin oceanic layer thicknesses are abnormally thin, by about 2 km, when compared to average crust. Total crustal thicknesses are shown to be thinner in the eastern part of the basin, approaching only 3 km. Crustal thinning toward the east is consistent with the Palau-Kyushu Ridge being a remnant transform fault connecting Philippine and Kula-Pacific ridges in the past. Predicted water depths in the basin are about 300 meters shallower than observed depths when compensated to average mantle depths found for the Western North Pacific. The depth anomaly cannot be fully reconciled by thin crust, and requires a deeper-seated anomaly to be present in the West Philippine Basin. Temperature and pressure modeling using experimental measurements from proposed mantle constituents indicate high seismic gradients in the upper mantle and may suggest that a multi-component or graded mantle exists beneath the marginal sea. / Graduation date: 1983

Värderingsbaserat värdeskapande : En studie vid HSB Centrala Värmland / Values-based Valuecreation : A Study at HSB Centrala Värmland

Engblom, Alexandra, Eriksson, Veronica January 2007 (has links)

Marketing Mix Strategies towards the Bottom of the Pyramid: a study of the Brazilian market

Correia, Teresa, Mårdh, Patrik January 2013 (has links)
Prahalad has started a debate in the last decade regarding the opportunities of doing business towards the low-income consumers of emerging markets, which he called Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP) markets. The purpose of this study is to investigate how companies adapt their marketing mix strategies in order to target this type of market. The research is developed as case studies within the Brazilian telecom market in order to offer a new BOP setting as previous research has been focusing on Asia and Africa. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews are conducted with managers of the prepaid segment of three telecom companies. The study shows that price strategies are most important to adapt towards affordability in order to target BOP markets because of consumers’ limited budget. While adaptation in product and place are also seen, they are not as substantial as in price. The strategy that was not adapted was promotion as traditional channels are most common within the Brazilian BOP market. Moreover, companies with a strategy that traditionally have been upper-segment-centric do have to make larger and more innovative adaptations in order to market this segment.

Functionality Based Refactoring: Improving Source Code Comprehension

Beiko, Jeffrey Lee 27 September 2007 (has links)
Thesis (Master, Computing) -- Queen's University, 2007-09-25 12:38:48.455 / Software maintenance is the lifecycle activity that consumes the greatest amount of resources. Maintenance is a difficult task because of the size of software systems. Much of the time spent on maintenance is spent trying to understand source code. Refactoring offers a way to improve source code design and quality. We present an approach to refactoring that is based on the functionality of source code. Sets of heuristics are captured as patterns of source code. Refactoring opportunities are located using these patterns, and dependencies are verified to check if the located refactorings preserve the dependencies in the source code. Our automated tool performs the functional-based refactoring opportunities detection process, verifies dependencies, and performs the refactorings that preserve dependencies. These refactorings transform the source code into a series of functional regions of code, which makes it easier for developers to locate code they are searching for. This also creates a chunked structure in the source code, which helps with bottom-up program comprehension. Thus, this process reduces the amount of time required for maintenance by reducing the amount of time spent on program comprehension. We perform case studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of our automated approach on two open source applications. / Master

Market barriers in the Bottom of the Pyramid : case studies in Tanzania and Kenya

Jansson, Oliver, Nilsson af Sillén, Albin January 2013 (has links)
A majority of the world’s population can be classified as Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP), which means that they earn less than USD 3,000 per year. In addition, it is estimated that 12 % of the worlds BoP population live in Africa. Due to the vast economic growth in Africa - which will boost the African consumers income level -we have decided to write a dissertation that regards the African BoP consumers. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate iffive BoP market barriers exist in the African countries Tanzania and Kenya. In order to answer the research question, we conducted interviews with two different companies established in the Tanzanian respectively Kenyan BoP market. It was possible to answer the research question through the primary data collected during these interviews. Our main findings from the empirical analysis indicated that four out of five market barriers in the Tanzanian and Kenyan BoP markets are accepted, and that both of the companies had to adapt to the different barriers. In addition, Company A and Company B also find solutions to these accepted market barriers in their respective BoP markets. This dissertation will be of value since Africa’s economy is steadily growing, which will attract more companies in the near future. Furthermore, research in how toovercome market barriers in order to establish successful business in low-income markets will also be valuable.

Sustainable development in ecotourism : Tour operators managing the economic, social and environmental concerns of sustainable development in Costa Rica

Eriksson, Frida, Lidström, Matilda January 2013 (has links)
Sustainable development is concerned with acknowledging economic, social and environmental development aspects, catering for the current needs of society without damaging the well-being of future generations. Ecotourism is a niche market that emerged because of increased market demands for sustainable tourism practices. It serves to provide tourism products and services while accommodating for the economic, social and environmental aspects of society. However, earlier research suggests that it is difficult to handle the three dimensions of sustainable development, indicating that trade-offs may occur. Furthermore, as tour operators are able to affect local development prospects, it is of interest to examine how they handle sustainable development, and more specifically, contribute to trade-offs between the economic, social and environmental pillars of sustainable development. This thesis was aimed at answering the following research question; “How do ecotourism tour operators contribute to trade-offs between the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development?”, with the objective of examining how ecotourism tour operators handle the dimensions of sustainable development, and what trade-offs that may occur between economic, social and environmental concerns. This qualitative research was carried out in the context of ecotourism tour operators in Costa Rica through semi-structured interviews. Nine respondents participated in this research, representing seven local ecotourism tour operators. The data collected on the trade-offs of ecotourism and sustainable development has in turn been analysed with reference to a pre-established theoretical framework. This study has revealed that ecotourism tour operators are actively engaging in initiatives supporting the idea of sustainable development. The tour operators handle the economic, social and environmental concerns through different initiatives. One conclusion that can be derived from this research is that all pillars of sustainable development are important to acknowledge. However, this is difficult as the three dimensions are somewhat contradicting. Therefore, depending on how ecotourism tour operators prioritise different initiatives, trade-offs are inevitable as both inter- and intragenerational needs are difficult to align.
