Three-Dimensional Inversion Technique in Ocean Acoustics Using the Parabolic Equation Method

Unknown Date (has links)
A three-dimensional parabolic equation (PE) and perturbation approach is used to invert for the depth- and range-dependent geoacoustic characteristics of the seabed. The model assumes that the sound speed profile is the superposition of a known range-independent profile and an unknown depth- and range-dependent perturbation. Using a Green’s function approach, the total measured pressure field in the water column is decomposed into a background field, which is due to the range-independent profile, and a scattered field, which is due to the range-dependent perturbation. When the Born approximation is applied to the resulting integral equation, it can be solved for the range-dependent profile using linear inverse theory. Although the method is focused on inverting for the sound speed profile in the bottom, it can also invert for the sound speed profile in the water column. For simplicity, the sound speed profile in the water column was assumed to be known with a margin of error of ± 5 m/s. The range-dependent perturbation is added to the index of refraction squared n2(r), rather than the sound speed profile c(ro). The method is implemented in both Cartesian (x,y,z) and cylindrical (r,q,z) coordinates with the forward propagation of the field in x and r, respectively. Synthetic data are used to demonstrate the validity of the method [1]. Two inversion methods were combined, a Monte Carlo like algorithm, responsible for a starting approximation of the sound speed profile, and a steepest descent method, that fine-tuned the results. In simulations, the inversion algorithm is capable of inverting for the sound speed profile of a flat bottom. It was tested, for three different frequencies (50 Hz, 75 Hz, and 100 Hz), in a Pekeris waveguide, a range-independent layered medium, and a range-dependent medium, with errors in the inverted sound speed profile of less than 3%. Estudo laboratorial acerca da possibilidade de aproveitamento da cinza pesada de termelétrica em bases e sub-bases de pavimentos flexíveis / Laboratory study concerning the possible utilization of the bottom ash from thermal power station in the bases and sub-bases of pavements

Leandro, Rodrigo Pires 17 October 2005 (has links)
Bottom ash is a by-product from the burning of mineral coal. Estudo sobre estratégias de negócio de empresas de transporte aéreo para atender o mercado de baixa renda: estudo de caso / Analysis of airline business strategies to capture the bottom of pyramid: case study

Fleury, Pedro Leme 17 September 2010 (has links)
The Bottom of Pyramid has become increasingly relevant market to all business sectors. It is estimated that in 2010 social classes C and D will account for over half the consumption of the Brazilian domestic market. Brazilian airlines, who have historically been characterized by providing service for the high income classes, began to develop strategies to attract lowincome public to travel by plane, using strategies developed in other industries and adapting to the particularities of the airline industry. This research has identified strategies for Brazilian airlines to reach the Bottom of Pyramid market. As this segment is still limit, strategies still focus on the marketing mix, such as product, price, distribution channel, communication and service. Practices adopted by retailers to attract and retain low-income consumers, as the neighborhood store, door to door, alternative financing to credit card have been tested and adopted by the airlines studied, complementing the usual practices of the market. This research also evaluated the main factors that affect the introduction of Bottom of Pyramid in the airline industry. The major concern of airlines examined in this study is with the airport infrastructure, which can limit the expansion of the airline industry in Brazil. Tour operators are already perceived by the airlines as a promoter for this process. Finally, this research evaluated the business strategies adopted by airlines, and identified a Brazilian low-cost model. The model is a hybrid between the strategies of differentiation and low cost. The analyzed airlines are seeking to offer services to both corporate customers and stimulate new markets, particularly the Bottom of Pyramid. According to Porter (1985), this strategy could be classified as stuck in the middle, because the company does not adopt any of the generic strategies. However, the history of these companies can assess that these companies started their operation with model closer to the strategy of low cost, and they had to evolve or completely redesign this model according to the characteristics of the Brazilian market

Radical change in energy intensive UK industry

Griffin, Paul January 2015 (has links)
Managing energy demand is essential to energy security and climate change mitigation. The industrial sector accounts for over a fifth of UK primary energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions. Energy intensive industry is uniquely restricted in the way it uses energy and emits greenhouse gasses. In this thesis, the potential of radical measures to achieve significant energy demand reduction and emissions abatement in UK energy intensive industry is assessed. Adopted is a multidisciplinary approach combining thermodynamic and techno-economic analysis techniques. Bottom-up assessments are applied to key energy intensive sectors of industry to capture the diverse and interactive array of technological characteristics invisible from a top-down perspective. Detailed projection models are built to design and analyse technology roadmaps for the sectors out to 2050. In an illustrative roadmap assessment, the technological pathways of radical process transition and carbon sequestration were each shown to achieve about 80% abatement in 2050 from 1990 emissions levels. Radical process transition achieved greater abatement before 2030 and this was reflected in lower cumulative emissions over the full period. Higher risk is associated with carbon sequestration from its reliance on timely access to CO2 transport and storage technology to compensate for lower short-medium term abatement. Although, combining carbon sequestration with high levels of biomass combustion indicated the largest potential abatement to 2050. Abatement economics in the iron and steel sector are notably sensitive to resource costs and the carbon trading price. The carbon trading price influences relative production costs in favour of higher abating pathways, but increases absolute costs. This signals the need for supportive policy measures that accelerate technology development and deployment while mitigating the risk of the carbon trading price to competitiveness. Some carbon capture technologies reduce relative production cost even in the absence of a carbon price, but this excludes the cost of CO2 transport and storage. Meanwhile, radical process transition pathways have a higher dependence on the future prices of natural gas, electricity, and scrap. Future work should focus on expanding the economic appraisal to other sectors and to indirect costs, as well as incorporating wider material efficiency strategies and running different future scenarios.

Utveckling för samverkansprocesser : En jämförande studie om hur implementeringsstrategier i ett urbant utvecklingsprojekt påverkade verksamheternas utveckling / Development for collaborative processes : A comparative study on how implementation strategies of an urban development project influenced organizational development

Karlstrand, Malin, Larsson, Erik, Nordström, Andreas January 2011 (has links)

The Triple Bottom Line: A Study into Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Accounting Trends

Aung, Moe Myat 01 January 2019 (has links)
Sustainability within the spheres of environmental and social awareness have become increasing salient issues in the world today. This is addressed within the corporate world through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) disclosure and reporting. However, the reporting and disclosure surrounding such issues remains at a disadvantage in comparison to that of financial reporting. These issues not only govern sustainability and awareness itself but increasing investor and stakeholder decisions concerning firms connected to these issues. This thesis aims to explore the issues encountered today in CSR reporting. It reviews current literature on regional differences, current methods of CSR disclosure, and the drawbacks of current reporting standards. To address these topics, there is a review of the definition of a stakeholder, its development over time and how stakeholders are prioritized and affected by the actions of firms. With the definition of a stakeholder established, the thesis reviews the relationship between different stakeholders and CSR disclosure and how this can be applied in order to increase the quality and consistency of CSR reporting. Finally, trends in CSR and differences within sectors and regions are considered and it is determined that there has to be a development of standardization through a current reporting standard, in order to ensure congruency of information across nations and sectors, allowing investors and stakeholders to make better informed decisions through the provided sustainability information.

Physics Based Approach for Seafloor Classification

Nguyen, Phu Duy 04 December 2017 (has links)
The seafloor properties are of high importance for many applications such as marine biology, oil and gas exploration, laying cables, dredging operations and off-shore construction. Several approaches exist to classify the properties of the seabed. These include taking direct samples of the seabed (e.g., coring), however, these methods are costly and slow. Underwater acoustic remote sensing techniques are of interest because they are lower cost and faster. The information about the seabed properties can be extracted by studying the energy of single beam echo sounders (SBES). This can be done by either phenomenological or numerical methods [1], [2]. This research investigates a numerical, model-data fitting method using a high frequency backscattering model developed by Jackson et al [3]. In this "inversion modeling" method, the matching process between the model and average echo envelope provides information about the sediment parameters, namely the sediment mean grain size (Mz) as the indicator of the seabed type, spectral parameter (W2) as the indicator of seabed roughness and normalized sediment volume parameter σ2 as the indicator of the scattering due to sediment inhomogeneities.

Phosphorus Distribution in the Bottom Sediments of Hyrum Reservoir

Schmalz, Kirk L. 01 May 1971 (has links)
The distribution of phosphorus in the sediment of Hyrum Reservoir was studied by collecting and analyzing 84 sediment samples for total, inorganic, organic, and water-soluble phosphorus. Sample locations were mapped by triangulation and sediment phosphorus distribution maps were made. Sediment analysis showed average total phosphorus content of 755 micrograms per gram, with organic phosphorus composing approximately 97 percent of total phosphorus. Sediment samples showed variability in phosphorus content which precluded identification of point sources of phosphorus input to the reservoir. Several areas of comparatively higher phosphorus content in the sediments were shown with isopleth maps. An estimate of the extent of sedimentation at each sample site was made. Sediment phosphorus content showed no significant correlation with reservoir sedimentation as determined in this study.
