____________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The work develops an exegesis of the theoretical-methodological frameworks of social analysis formulated by Pierre Bourdieu and Anthony Giddens, focusing on the ways through which each of these authors tackles the foundational problem of the relation between the spheres of agency and structure, taken as the two essentially constitutive dimensions of any portrait or investigation of the societal universe. The exam of this problematic is justified by the fact that Bourdieu’s theory of practice and Giddens’s theory of structuration have as their common foundation the attempt to overcome a specter of inter-related dichotomies that stalk through the history of XXth century social-scientific thought, being referred to through a variety of binomial labels, such as subjectivism/objectivism, individualism/holism and micro/macro. The investigation of the conceptual innovations and social-ontological theses drawn in the theories of the above quoted athors is situated against the backdrop of a presentation of such antinomies, which indicate the tendency, embodied in an impressive diversity of theoretical-methodological perspectives, towards the formulation of conceptions of the relationship between subjectively propelled individual action, on the one hand, and structural or institutional properties of collective formations, on the other, in which an ontological and/or explanatory primacy is aprioristically imputed to one of these spheres. The focus of the exposition of the theoretical-analytical armors of Giddens and Bourdieu is directed towards the reunion of the arguments through which both try to demonstrate the limits of unilateral theoretical solutions to the problem of the articulation between the instances of agency and structure, while weaving, at the same time, heuristic instruments oriented precisely towards the capture of the relation of reciprocal conditionality established between those instances in the course of human social existence. This exegetical path leads, at last, to the conclusion that the theory of practice and the theory of structuration consist in two distinct versions of a praxeological-structurationist model of investigation of the social world, an approach that has as its cornerstone the thesis (a trivial one only at first sight) that states that the characterization of societal life as an endless flow of practices constitutes the heuristically most fruitful starting point to the construction of an accurate portrait of the simultaneous processes of constitution of society by agents and of constitution of agents by society.

This work is a theoretical analysis of the operationalization of Pierre Bourdieu's notion of habitus, focusing on the book « A distinção » (2007a). Our intention was to investigate variations of the relation of the habitus to the past (and the presuppositions implied on it, such as the question of unconsciousness, social classes, reproduction of power and domination), seeking to see if they implied a greater openness for the present and future, it means, to the practical-evaluative and projective dimensions of action, and therefore with the possibility of pointing to a more dialectical articulation between the dimensions of human agency. The greater heterogeneities, in relation to the observation of the assumptions of this heuristic instrument, appeared in the Bourdieusian characterization of the petty-bourgeois habitus. The specificity of the French petty bourgeoisie is related to the structural indetermination of its location in the social space and to the presence of "diachronic properties" related to the increased experience of social displacements. It is for this class of agents that the projective dimension of the agency seems to hint more significantly. This would be revealed by allusions to the projectability or the presence of the "future" as the guiding principle of action, by the recurrent necessity of conscious choice, by self-critical detachment from its own dispositions, and by the action of a subjective representation, in part, disembedded from the social position possessed.

The present study aimed at investigating and defining the basis of sociological analysis proposed in the work of Pierre Bourdieu, issues related to forms of social interaction present in the sub-field of the Brazilian Paralympic sport. The specific objectives point to three spheres in this space: the process of training, recruitment and performance of classifiers paralympic athletes responsible for the allocation of classes in dispute, the occurrence of professional athletes and ways of distributing financial and symbolic rewards, and the presence and ways of working people with disabilities in management and administration of organizational entities of the Brazilian Paralympic sport (federations, associations, committees, among others). The research methodology was given based on three different occasions. The first analysis on the theoretical work of Pierre Bourdieu on the sociology of sport, and conformation and subsequent description of the elements of the sub-field of Paralympic sport. The second in data collection through personal interviews and semi-structured interviews with individuals working in technical functions and / or specific administrative Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPC), linked each to one of the areas of analysis, seeking not yet documented information about these aspects. The third, in the discussion of the data based on identification and conformation of the sub-field analysis, gathering the information obtained to the categories suggested by Bourdieu for the interpretation of interactions among individuals in a particular social space. Data analysis was based on the division of information collected in three groups linked to the spheres described above. Were highlighted data that point to the conformation of the objectified social space, based on information aggregated, denied or reinforced components previously presented in theoretical analysis of the Brazilian Paralympic sport. Thus contributing to the definition and understanding of the forms of social action of agents in this space. It has been as a result, the Brazilian Paralympic sport is an area of disputes over control of sports, political and business typical of the contemporary sports of the XXI century. But that is still in the process of conformation and position statement on society. And that depends, as already explained by the theory of Pierre Bourdieu's Fields, both from internal actions, and external to their social boundaries, since their relative autonomy against the Brazilian society and sports in general and their conformations and social characteristics / Doutorado / Atividade Fisica, Adaptação e Saude / Doutor em Educação Física

Por fim, faz-se uma avaliação da Igreja Universal à luz da pesquisa realizada / Abstract: The Kingdom of God Universal Church is one of the newest churches of Brazil.Although , with only 23 years of organization, it's said to be one of the biggest, having exceeded many churches which exist in the country since last century. Exploring habitus and writer identities : an ethnographic study of writer identity construction in the FET phase at two schools in the Western CapeVan Heerden, Michelle January 2015 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The purpose of this study is to investigate the writing identities constructed in the Further Education and Training (FET) Phase and the ways in which these identities either strengthen or impede academic writing at university. Success at university is predominantly dependent on students' ability to express their ideas through writing academic essays or assignments in most faculties. However, studies over the past decade highlight the inability of many South African learners, especially those for whom English is not a home language, to succeed at universities. The poor performance of such students is often linked to the lack of adequate preparation in
the FET Phase, which is grades 10 to 12, the grades prior to entering first year undergraduate programmes. The significance of this study is that it sheds light on the discourse features of policy, texts, pedagogy and assessment in the FET Phase and the consequences of these for the construction of writers' identities. Further, it foregrounds the ways that policy positions teachers, learners and learning despite diversity in school cultures, identities and histories, and more importantly the ways that unique local pedagogical contexts construct writer identities as a bridge towards engagement in academic essays and the discourses valued at higher
institutions. The intention was thus twofold: on the one hand to understand the writer identities constructed in the FET phase and secondly to shed light on the ways that these identities intersect with academic writing, in an attempt to inform first year writing programmes at universities. This was an ethnographic study that included participant observation, interviews with teachers and document analysis of national curriculum policies, grade 12 English Additional language external question papers and first year student texts. The participants were two grade 10 English
classes from two schools with different profiles in terms of learner background, linguistic repertoire, and socio-economic circumstances. The rationale for focusing on grade 10 is that it is the first initiation point into the FET Phase and as such an important site to investigate the ways in which writing identities are activated. I thus ‘shadowed’ these learners for two years, up to the end of grade 11. Finally, I analysed first year student texts produced by learners from these two schools in their first year of study at a Cape Town university. In order to engage with my data, I first drew on Bourdieu's concepts of field, habitus and capital, to illuminate the ways in which national policies constructed theories and pedagogies of language teaching and learning, and positioned teachers, as well as the consequences of these policies and positionings for constructing sound writer identities. I then focused on the different organizing practices at the two schools, in order to foreground positionings enacted in local contexts. As a result, the study sheds light on the ways that writer identities were activated at two secondary schools in Cape Town, both of which served a previously disadvantaged
population but with one classified as poorly resourced while the other enjoyed the status of a well-resourced school. My study centred on the visible and invisible curricula, the differing kinds of cultural capital they produce and the conversion of this capital into other forms of cultural and symbolic capital (such as access to university) which may eventually be converted to economic capital in the form of access to well-paid kinds of employment. Secondly, I drew on Systemic Functional Linguistics, with its conception of language as socially produced and politically situated and its development by the 'Sydney school' into genre-based pedagogy, as an analytical lens to unpack the language learning and teaching theories underpinning policy documents. This lens was also useful for evaluating the extent to which curriculum, pedagogy and assessment tools inducted learners into the key 'genres of schooling' (such as information report, explanation, and argument) that are necessary for success across the curriculum at school and university. Most importantly, it allowed for a rigorous linguistic analysis of first year student scripts and the extent to which writers managed the three metafunctions, ideational,
interpersonal and textual. These metafunctions are the basis for coherent, well-structured, genreappropriate writing. The study found that mismatches between policy framing and the way that writing was taught and assessed in the FET Phase resulted in massive gaps between the writer identities constructed in the FET Phase and the first year writer identities valued at universities. Findings help to
pinpoint some of the reasons why particular learners manage to make the transition into tertiary study and why a large number of learners studying through English as an additional language either fail to gain access into university or fail during their first year of study. Finally, findings pointed out the effects of post democracy curriculum shifts and national examinations on classroom discourse and pedagogy, especially in relation to constructing enabling writer identities, and more importantly on the ability of learners making the transition into university to
produce academically valued texts in their first year of study.
