Processutveckling i praktiken : En fallstudie om processutvecklingsmetoders användbarhet / Process development in practice : A case study about the usefulness of methods for process development

Johansson, Victor, Rahm, Victor January 2022 (has links)
Background and problem: Working process oriented is important for all types of companies in order to meet the high demands from customers and the outside world. Working process oriented involves developing business processes. To meet the increased need for process development a variety of methods have been made on how companies can work with this. Atea Logistics AB have identified an issue in one of their business processes that does not perform in line with their expectations. The issue is linked to the purchasing process and the handling of delivery dates, which leads to difficulties when determining certain arrival date of the goods. This affects several parts in the value chain as well as the final customer value, which raises a need for development. Despite the increased importance of process development, critics mean that the methods for this is difficult to understand and lacks a practical applicability. Since the previous research misses a practical anchoring on how the methods actually contributes to improved business processes this study aims to test and evaluate one of these methods for process development on Atea’s issue, to hopefully increase the practical usability.  Purpose: The purpose of the study is to conduct a testing of a method for process development on a practical issue within the company Atea. Thereafter an evaluation of the method will be done in order to present any suggestions for improvement and to compile these in a framework. Furthermore, the study also aims to provide recommendations to Atea regarding how they can work in order to overcome their experienced issues within their business process.  Method: The study is mainly a qualitative case study. The approach was deductive with some elements of inductive reasoning. A theoretical frame with key concepts was gathered in order to provide the reader with a comprehensive knowledge of the different parts of process orientation. Furthermore, the purpose of the theoretical sampling was to create an understanding of the different methods that exists for process development in order to conduct a testing of one of these in a practical environment. The empirical sampling has been conducted through a particularly practical approach, interventionist research method. The method uses an experimental and interacting approach to gather empirical observations by being a part of the research object. A testing of a theoretical method for process development were then conducted on the practical case in order to solve the issue in parallel to an evaluation of the method. The philosophy applied is empirical realism which strives to create an increased understanding for the reality beyond what is described in theory.  Conclusion: To be able to answer the question of the essay the purpose was to conduct a testing of the BPR method on a real problem within Atea. The conclusions that can be obtained from this is that the method that was tested was practical and useful but left some room för improvement. During the course of the essay, a lack of some aspects in the method has become apparent. The adjustments that have been made because of this is linked to practical phenomena’s such as time, commitment, and motivation. Furthermore, it was considered that the methods practical use could be increased even further by rearranging the order of some of the key tasks in order to create a more logical work process. To be able to state with certainty that the practical usability has actually been increased, it requires that a new test is conducted with the new framework. However, there are many indications that these changes are a possible step towards a more practical method with simpler usability for process development. The development work also resulted in recommendations to Atea, the main areas for improvement involved strengthened communication both internally and externally, standardization of processes, and the development of automation solutions.

Standardy modelování a řízení podnikových procesů / Business Process Modeling Standards

Klička, Lukáš January 2010 (has links)
Business process modeling plays an important role for the documentation and analysis of organizational processes and for the specification of requirements for information systems. Currently, there are many standards for process modeling, and each represents a different approach to modeling and provides different opportunities for creating models. Thus, same models created in different modeling languages differ in terms of their expressiveness, according to each standard. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the effectiveness of selected business process modeling standards. The effectiveness of standards will be evaluated on two levels. First, in terms of their semantics and second, in terms of their syntax. Evaluation of standards in terms of their semantics will be based on the comparison of standards with a business process metamodel created within the project Opensoul. This model defines a set of basic elements and their associations at a basic level of process modeling. Evaluation of standards in terms of their syntax will be based on the comparison of standards with a framework proposed by Moody and Hillegersberg. The results of this comparison should show which standard best supports defined criteria. The evaluation framework will be applied on the following process modeling standards: BPMN, EPC and IDEF3. Based on the results obtained their strength and weaknesses will be discussed. The main contribution of this thesis can be seen both in the analysis of the element set of selected process modeling standards and further in the comparison of standards according to the evaluation framework.

The evolution of technology has allowed an increasingly better support to the discipline of business process management (BPM). The automation of practices from modeling tools, allows building models to support organizations in the design and management of its processes. In BPM, the transformation and continuous improvement of methods are fundamental to the management of the organization and models of business processes should follow this evolution. To perform the merge of these models, by the transformation of one or more processes, or by merging of organizations, software analysts use the techniques available in the literature. However, frequently they are considered imprecise, by not ensuring the correct integration of models. Consequently, merging business processes models becomes a difficult, error prone task, since existing techniques create composite models difficult to understand based on graphs and generic notation that does not match to the industrial reality. Therefore, this study proposes a merging technique of business process models that combines in a single source, some of the most used techniques available in the literature, and supports merging of models directed to a notation widely known and used by organizations. Furthermore, it also proposes the implementation of a tool, based on this technique, which was created to define the similarity and support the integration of models in a semi-automatic way. Lastly, experimental studies were performed with analysts who solved six scenarios of merging models, both manually and with the help of this tool. The result showed that the proposed technique, in fact, improves the accuracy and reduces composition effort, providing cost savings and increased productivity.

A Framework for Monitoring and Adapting Business Processes Using Aspect-Oriented URN

Pourshahid, Alireza 28 April 2014 (has links)
Context: Organizations strive to improve their business processes, and adaptive business processes have recently attracted much attention in that context. However, much research in that area has a narrow focus and does not consider a comprehensive view of the organization and its goals. In addition, Business Intelligence-based monitoring methods are useful for business process improvement but they often present information in a format that is not entirely suited for decision making. Objectives: The main objectives of this thesis are to provide: • A framework to model goals, processes, performance, situations, and improvement patterns using one modeling notation, in an iterative and incremental manner; • A method for the modeling and analysis of cause-effect relationships between indicators used to measure goal satisfaction; and • A technique allowing the detection of undesirable, sub-optimal conditions and the application of improvement patterns to the context Method: We develop an iterative framework based on the User Requirements Notation (URN) for modeling, monitoring and improving business organizations and their business processes. In addition, we introduce a formula-based evaluation algorithm allowing better analysis of the relationships between the business performance model elements (namely indicators). Furthermore, we use a profiled version of the Aspect-oriented URN (AoURN) with extensions (Business Process Pattern profile), for detecting undesirable conditions and for business process adaptation. We validate the novelty and feasibility of our approach by performing a systematic literature review, by assessing it against Zellner’ mandatory elements of a method, by developing tool support, by performing a pilot experiment and by using real-life examples from different sectors (healthcare and retail). Results: The two examples show that through the framework’s iterative approach, organizations at different levels of maturity in their business improvement journey can benefit from the framework. Furthermore, our systematic literature review shows that although there are existing works that enable our vision, most of them have a narrow focus and do not cover the three organization views that are of interest in this research. AoURN allows analysts to find repeated patterns in a context and bundle goal, performance and process models as a self-contained unit. AoURN hence enables the modeling of complex circumstances together with analysis techniques for what-if analysis and process adaptation, all using a unified and integrated modeling language. Finally, the pilot experiment suggests that, with some level of documentation and training, users who are already familiar with URN can use the profiled AoURN provided in this thesis as well as the discussed improvement patterns.

BPM (Business Process Management) Governance is an aspect often seen as critical to the success of BPM in organizations. This seems to be especially true for the public sector, where efficiency, accountability and transparency (three basic governance principles) must be coordinated. However, governance approaches in BPM have been characterized as complex and imprecise, with quite different views on the subject, in addition to macro level models that provide little help on how to implement it. Moreover, there is a small number of empirical papers describing practical reports on BPM governance. Therefore, there is a lack of consistent and detailed conceptual frameworks and concrete applications that researchers and practitioners can rely on to properly address BPM Governance. In light of such need, this thesis presents a conceptual model to support the implementation of governance in BPM, named BPMG Model. Initially, exploratory case studies were performed to identify barriers and facilitators that impact the deployment of BPM governance in public sector organizations conducting BPM initiatives. It was observed that studied organizations do not precisely understand the concept of BPM governance. The conception of the BPMG model adopted a design-science research approach and also encompassed the development of a software tool that implemented model elements. Both the BPMG Model and the software tool were evaluated by the members of a BPM Office from a Brazilian public organization and by a group of governance experts from different organizations. Evaluation results revealed that the BPMG Model and tool supported BPM practitioners of the organization to develop a more accurate and shared understanding of governance in BPM. In particular, the model was considered as significantly helpful for the implementation of governance principles in the organization.
