The diploma project deals with the issue of Business Intelligence, it focuses on tools used for data analysis and presentation. The project is divided into two parts -- the theoretical and practical one. The theoretical one applies to the characterization of the principle, the description of the architecture components and presentation techniques. The aim of this project is to suggest new suitable analytical tools and graphic interface of BI system for small and medium-sized businesses. Using selected tools is illustrated on a specific example.

This master thesis focuses on the opinions and barriers from the BI tool in Report Studio as the part of IBM Cognos BI for the creation of reports. The aim of this thesis is to analyze all the functions of this tool and simplify that experience for other users. The theoretical section of this thesis introduces Business Intelligence as well as the product IBM Cognos BI itself divided into individual components. The final part of thesis introduces and compares similar products available on the market from the competitors. The practical part consists of analysis of Report Studio tool functions followed by applied criteria. In this part, the strengths and weaknesses of Report Studio are mentioned along with proposals of procedures regarding work efficiency using this tool. This section also lists nonstandard examples collected from the client's experience followed by the exact procedures using solution default functions of Report Studio and script language JavaScript.

The thesis describes the realization of datamart for small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) in an existing data warehouse environment conforming to Kimball Bus architecture. The introductory section deals with the theoretical guidelines of data warehousing and Business Intelligence. Following with the analysis of the current state of SMB datamart and data warehouse architecture. The results together with business requirements are used for the design of new datamart which encompasses ETL processes, OLTP database, OLAP model and reports. Each of these components are implemented using the tools from Microsoft. Final solution is tested and deployed on the production instance of database server running MS SQL Server.

I dagens konkurrensutsatta miljö där organisationer verkar i, behöver organisationer fatta databaserade beslut snarare än beslut baserat på magkänsla. Detta med syfte att ta rätt beslut, vid rätt tillfälle. Tidigare har Business Intelligence mestadels nyttjas av beslutsfattare på den strategiska nivån, men i takt med att fler personer inom organisationerna behöver ha beslutsunderlag när de fattar beslut, har ett behov av rapporter och dataanalys också genererats på den operativa nivån. Exempelvis behöver operativa avdelningar snabbt tillgång till tillförlitlig information när de skall ta fram idéförslag till ledningsgrupper. Detta ökade behov av BI har således skapat ett ökat tryck på IT-avdelningen vilket resulterat i att deras arbetsbörda eskalerats. En lösning på detta är Self-Service Business Intelligence (SSBI) vilket i praktiken innebär att vanliga användare, så kallade casual users, får tillgång till SSBI-verktyg med direkt koppling till en eller flera datakällor så att de själva kan skapa egna rapporter och analyser. Ett syfte med SSBI är således att förbättra informationstillgängligheten inom företaget så att fler användare kan nyttja data för att kunna ta databaserade beslut.  Beträffande hur SSBI kan förbättra nuvarande informationstillgänglighet utifrån slutanvändarnas förväntningar visar studien på att casual users och power users anser att SSBI kan förbättra informationstillgängligheten. Genom att använda SSBI innehållandes en förenklad datamodell kan ett databaserat arbetssätt appliceras, resurser i form av tid kan besparas samt en hög nivå av transparens kan uppnås. Emellertid, för att kunna uppnå en förbättrad informationstillgänglighet behöver slutanvändarnas förväntningar på vad SSBI kan tillhandahålla, hanteras. Detta bör göras genom att involvera slutanvändare tidigt i de projekt som arbetar med att ta fram en SSBI-lösning samt arbeta med strategier för att säkerställa att förväntningarna på SSBI-lösningen motsvarar de behov slutanvändarna har.  Frågeställningen har besvarats genom en fallstudie innehållandes två fall. Fem semistrukturerade intervjuer har genomförts med två olika användargrupper, casual users och power users. Casual users motsvarar det ena fallet och är slutanvändare från ett företag, power users motsvarar det andra fallet och är slutanvändare från ett annatföretag. Samtliga respondenter och företag är anonyma i studien. / In today's competitive environment in which organizations operate, organizations need to make computerized decisions rather than decisions based on gut feeling. This with the aim of making the right decision, at the right time. In the past, business intelligence has mostly been used by decision-makers at the strategic level, but as more people within the organizations need to have a decision basis when they make decisions, a need for reports and data analysis has also been arisen at the operational level. For example, operational departments need quick access to reliable information when developing idea suggestions for senior management teams. This increased need for BI has thus created increased pressure on the IT department, which has resulted in their workload being escalated. One solution to this is self-service business intelligence (SSBI), which in practice means that ordinary users, so-called casual users, have access to SSBI tools with a direct connection to one or more data sources so that they can create their own reports and make analyses. One purpose of SSBI is to improve the availability of information within the company so that more users can use data to be able to make fact-based decisions. Regarding how SSBI can improve current information availability based on end users' expectations, the study shows that casual users and power users believe that SSBI can improve information availability. By using SSBI containing a simplified data model, a data-driven working approach can be applied, resources in terms of time can be saved and a high level of transparency can be achieved. However, to achieve improved information availability, end users' expectations of what SSBI can provide need to be managed. This should be done by involving end users early in projects that is responsible for developing a SSBI-solution as well as working with strategies to ensure that the expectations of the SSBI solution correspond to what the end users want. The research question has been answered through a case study containing two cases. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with two different user groups, casual users and power users. Casual users correspond to one case and are end users from one company, power users correspond to the other case and are end users from the other company. All respondents and companies are anonymous in the study.

Bakgrund och problemområde: Biltillverkningen har en stor påverkan på ekonomin i utvecklade länder. Biltillverkningens fokusskifte till billhandelsföretagen genom EU förordning från 2002, har gjort att bilhandelsföretagens självständighet ökat och de har fått möjlighet att växa samtidigt som konkurrensen ökat. Denna kombination har skapat behovet av en generellt styrstruktur för ett bilhandelsföretag, vilket även gjort att studiens fallföretag Liljas i Kalmar efterfrågar en tydligare styrstruktur för deras verksamhet.   Syfte: Studien ämnar att generera kunskap kring en tydligare styrstruktur för bilhandelsföretag genom ett proaktivt prestationsmätningssystem vilket ämnar att förmedlas effektiva beslut genom ett visualiseringsverktyg. Vidare är det praktiska syftet med studien att beskriva Liljas befintliga prestationsmätning för att utveckla ett proaktivt prestationsmätningssystem som Liljas kan använda på den operativa nivån genom sitt interna informationsnätverk.   Metod: Studien har utformats som en kvalitativ fallstudie på bilhandelsföretaget Liljas. Studien tog utgångspunkt i en deduktiv ansats som grundat den konceptuella modellen, vilket sammanflätats med intervjuer som utgjort det empiriska materialet till studien. Modellen och Liljas djupintervjuer kombinerades och analyserades fram genom mönsteranalys.   Slutsats: Sammanfattningsvis har det utifrån studien konstaterats att det inte är den direkta prestationsmätningen som ligger till grund för en proaktivt arbete hos ett bilhandelsföretag. Istället är det hur prestationsmätningen visualiseras genom ett dashboard, i kombination med  tillvaratagandet av de anställdas kunskap om marknaden som genererar en proaktiv styrning och ett proaktivt beteende hos de anställda. Det blir således indirekt prestationsmätningen mått som skapar ett proaktivt arbete, under förutsättning att dessa kommuniceras och visualiseras på ett sätt som integrerar de anställdas kunskap om kundens förändrade behov. / Background and problem area: Car manufacturing has a major influence in the economy of developed countries. Car manufacturing focus has shifted towards car dealership business, because of the EU Regulation from 2002, and the car dealership companies' independency and the opportunity to grow at the same time as competition increased. This combination has created the need for en overall control structure for a car dealership business, which also is shown from the control structure needed in the case study company Liljas in Kalmar.  Purpose: This study aims to generate knowledge surrounding a clearer control structure for the car dealership business through an proactive performance measurement system, which intends to convey effective decisions through a visualization tool. Furthermore, the practical purpose of the study was to describe Lilja's existing performance measurement to develop a proactive performance measurement systems as Lilja can use for the operational level through its internal information network.   Method: The study has been designed as en qualitative case study in the car dealership company Lilja. The study is created from an deductive approach and from that basis the conceptual model was created. The model was interwoven with interviews as constituted empirical evidence for the study. The model and Lilja depth interviews has been combined and analyzed through pattern analysis.    Conclusion: In summary, the study found that it is not the direct performance measurement that forms the basis for a proactive work in a car dealership business. Instead, it's the way performance measurement is visualized through a dashboard, in combined with the employees' knowledge of the market that generate a proactive management and a proactive behavior throught the employees. It is therfore indirectly a performancemeasurementsystem measures create proactively effects provided that they are communicated and visualized in a way that integrate the employees' knowledge about the customer's changing needs.
