The Role of Information Technology Organizational Design in Firms' Ability to Innovate

Halimi, Hassan S. 01 January 2015 (has links)
Information technology (IT) organizations have become an integral part of many firms, with increasing strategic significance. Consequently, investments in IT represent a significant percentage of a firm's expenditure. Despite the investment, the business value of IT has been difficult to quantify, creating uncertainty about a firm's investments in IT innovation. The purpose of this nonexperimental study was to examine relationships between a firm's innovativeness and 3 IT organizational design factors: knowledge creation, dynamic capabilities, and communication structures. The research questions addressed the relationships between a firm's ability to innovate and specific design elements of the IT organization. The study was based on Nonaka's dynamic theory of organizational knowledge creation, Schumpeter's industrial market structure, and Wernerfelt's resource-based view of the firm. Data were collected from an online survey with 115 employees of firms that depend on IT to deliver their products or services. Pearson product-moment correlational analysis revealed statistically significant relationships between the IT organizational design factors and a firm's ability to innovate. The implications for positive social change stemming from this study affect managers of firms that rely on IT to deliver products or services. The findings suggest that the design of the IT organization influences the performance of the firm through cost reduction and its sustainability through innovation, both of which lead to community economic empowerment thus benefiting the general public.

This study aims to evaluate the influence of Information Technology (IT) in the Firm Performance under orientation of Business Strategy. The research is a specific cut of the IT strategic alignment of technology integration, use and value of IT to the business and influences several of the firm's performances perspectives. The business strategy gets cut in the study of strategic orientation to impact the IT integration to strategy and business processes. The research used the technique of structural equations modeling with the PLS-PM an empirical study of 222 companies. The results show the influence of IT on business performance, in explaining the variability of 34.1 % of learning & growth performance, 46.1 % of the internal process performance, 44.7 % of market performance, and 32.7 % of the performance financial. The results show the influence of IT on firm performance and the impact of the strategy on integration, use and value of IT to strategy and business processes. The study explains 74.1% of the variability of the use and strategy value of IT and business processes, and the various effects of IT on firm performance. In addition, the study demonstrated the importance and emphasis given by the companies in the strategy orientation aspects. The model made IT possible to explain the variability of various performance perspectives, and suggests other ways to measure the adoption and IT use in the organizations.

A Resource-based View of the Interorganizational Information Systems Capability / A Resource-based View of the Interorganizational Information Systems Capability

翁懷嘉, Weng, Huai-Chia Unknown Date (has links)
無 / Facing today’s highly competitive market and changed business environment, whether the company has the capability to implement successful inter-organizational information systems to achieve efficient supply chain management becomes a significant issue. To fulfill this need, this research aims to develop a framework for measuring the IOS capability. After company interviews, our proposed framework is simplified to measure four IOS capabilities: (1) physical assets, (2) path dependency, (3) relational intangibles (trust and complementary resources), and (4) market power. We propose that firms with these IOS resources can have higher IOS usage, which in turn creates greater IOS performance. / A general survey is then conducted in the Taiwan PC industry to validate our proposed framework. The instrument was tested for validity and reliability properties, and multiple linear regression was used for testing our hypotheses. The results indicate that physical IT assets and relational specific intangibles are positively related with IOS usage. On the other hand, path dependency and market power do not have significant impact on IOS usage. We further explore the relationships between the IOS capabilities and firm performance. The result indicates firms with more IOS usage are more likely to achieve better firm performance. These results can further be examined in a more industry-wide survey in the future. The researchers can also build upon this model to further examine the factors that are discovered.
