Iudaea capta, Iudaea invicta : the subversion of Flavian ideology in Fourth Ezra

Keddie, George Anthony 14 April 2014 (has links)
The present report applies Pierre Bourdieu’s social theory to the study of ancient Judaean apocalypticism in its historical, socioeconomic, and political contexts. Its central thesis is that each Judaean apocalyptic discourse is waged against the dominant ideology of its society and its perceived sustainers and beneficiaries. The particular focus in this report is Flavian ideology—the dominant ideology of the Roman Empire in the last three decades of the first century CE—and its subversion by the apocalyptic discourse of the late-first century CE text Fourth Ezra. After the Romans quashed a revolt in the province of Judaea and sacked the Jerusalem temple in 70 CE, the soon-to-be Roman emperor Vespasian, and his sons Titus and Domitian, initiated and maintained an empire-wide discourse proclaiming Iudaea capta (‘Judaea captured’). By means of coins, monuments, statues, literary propaganda, and the institution of a new Judaean tax, the Flavian emperors magnified their successful suppression of this provincial revolt in order to legitimate their dynasty. This discourse, which quickly became misrecognized in society and persisted long after the tenure of the Flavian dynasty, marked all Judaeans throughout the empire as foreign rebels and barbarians. The author of Fourth Ezra challenged Flavian ideology, and the Iudaea capta discourse in particular, by “revealing”—that is, persuading his audience to believe—that Rome’s victory over Judaea is part of the divine plan, the glory of Rome is fleeting, and the righteous ones who keep God’s Law will still have an opportunity for redemption. A focus of the present analysis is the figure of a lamenting woman employed by both discourses. Whereas the Flavian discourse used a dejected Judaean woman to represent Judaea after the Roman victory, Fourth Ezra’s apocalyptic discourse reveals a similar figure of a lamenting Judaean woman to be Mother Zion, and has her transform into the new, eschatological Jerusalem. When these two discourses are viewed together, regardless of direct influence or dependence, it is clear that the apocalyptic discourse subverts Flavian ideology. In the process, the author of Fourth Ezra recycles power by simultaneously delegitimating the Flavian emperors and legitimating his own social circle of sage-leaders. / text

Do Variations in State Mandatory Child Abuse and Neglect Report Laws affect Report Rates among Medical Personnel?

Faulkner, Amanda Ellen 23 April 2009 (has links)
Each state and territory within the United States is required by the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act [42 U.S.C. 5101 et seq.] to maintain a mandatory suspected child abuse and neglect reporting law, requiring certain professionals who regularly see children to report any suspicions of child maltreatment to child protective services. It is well documented that mandatory reporters fail to report each case of suspected child maltreatment they witness. This study sought to determine whether differences in three specific variables within the mandatory report laws had an effect on the frequency with which medical personnel report suspected child abuse and neglect. The three variables analyzed were: definitional scope of emotional abuse; standard of knowledge required for a report; and severity of penalty imposed on those who knowingly fail to report cases of child abuse and neglect. Data was obtained from the Child Maltreatment 2006 annual report printed by the Health and Human Services Administration of Children, Youth and Families. Of the three variables assessed, only severity of penalty yielded a significant association with report rate. States with lower report rates were significantly more likely to have lenient penalties for failure to report compared with those who had report rates above the national average (O.R. = 5.0, 95% C.I. = 1.165-21.465). It is recommended that states consider increasing the severity of the sanctions enforced for failure to report suspected child abuse and neglect. Although standard of knowledge requirements were not significantly associated with report rates, the literature suggests that standardization of this portion of the mandatory report laws could improve report rates, particularly among physicians.

The corporate events tourism accelerates the tourism phenomenon and reduces seasonality, besides it boosts various forms of communication, whether it is focused on attracting events or otherwise. Based on this expectation, the objective of the research was to evaluate the types of communication used for the attraction of corporate events in Convention & Visitors Bureaus of Brazil. The study had as its universe executives and trade directors of associations that attract corporate events, through qualitative research and descriptive and exploratory nature, functionalist bias and non-probabilistic sample. Data collection was conducted through a semi-structured questionnaire sent by electronic means through the Google Docs tool and evaluated by the content analysis technique. The research results show that the process of attracting is focused on the profile of the sectors: wholesale, services, events organizers, promoters, agribusiness, technological, industrial, mining, leaders and medical. The questions that impact communication are: evaluate the data and sources, have updated information, ask for and offer feedback, work with the demand and supply of the attraction. Communication should be multi-tools, make assessments constantly, language vices, communicative clarity, limited vocabulary, previous experiences and vision of friends or family. Those which corroborate are focused on an attitude while communicating, responsibility and ownership that creates transparency and fidelity to communication, direct contact through speech, proposal submission, contact with the promoter or leader. In the research was pointed out the difficulty of evaluation, regarding the frequency and feedback of data in order to maintain a line of information and possible development, given that the evaluation point to point was cited by four destinations (Natal, S?o Paulo, Bel?m and Po?os de Caldas). In conclusion, to build a communication to attract corporate events that decentralize the results through the country integrally, it is needed to know the main contractors niches, their quirks and peculiarities, because each event attraction is unique and for that contractor the will of the participants is always in first place, in other words, the communication fidelity impacts on the final feedback.

From this point, a bibliographic revision tried to present the partnerships evolution on companies side and intersectorials, which is the object of this research. It tried too evaluate the demand factors which enforce NGO as companies partner emphasizing a potential synergy framework verified by some authors. The research used the James E. Austin (2001) collaboration continuunm dimensions framework, who is a reference due his research and the theories about partnerships between NGO and companies. From the case study, unique type, which represents the typical NGO universe, it was observed the circumstances and conditions a NGO would have applied methods of relationship management by his own, and identify what are the strength points and challenges the NGO faced to maintain this relationship management process. Then, it was observed that the dimensions presented by Austin are consistent on the management structure in a NGO, but it suffers by the informal management style of its more valuable and intangible resource: the partners.

However , what should be a mobilization for the development of the cultural sector , has caused distortions in relationships between cultural actors for successful fundraising. These implications can affect the behavior of the cultural sector , impacting the economy and interactions between cultural actors. Thus, the study of the phenomenon of tax incentive laws has emerged as relevant ( BOTELHO , 2001) to understand modifiers aspects caused by this financing model in the cultural area . This proposition was also referenced by Rubim (2007 ) , please realize that this funding format has been replicated to the state and local levels in our country. This study was therefore aimed to analyze the fundraising process for the financing of cultural projects from the tax incentive laws . For this, had as reference , cultural organizations based in the city of Rio de Janeiro , but with operations covering the State of Rio de Janeiro. The chosen research strategy was a qualitative approach and was based theoretically in the literature review on cultural policies and funding , cultural promotion and fundraising , cultural management and cultural projects. As data analysis was used content analysis technique described by Vergara (2005 ) . Data collection occurred through documentary survey and interview. The findings in this study showed that the fundraising process for the financing of cultural projects from the tax incentive laws occurs through power struggle between different cultural actors. This leads parallel negotiations , economic distortions between cultural segments , as well as the transformation of cultural production into a commercial product .

This thesis has three contributions: a) in the first paper, we develop a transportation cost index based on the market potential concept. b) In the second paper, we test if first or second nature causes determine agglomerations in our sample, which is composed by micro-regions of the Northeast, Southeast and Centre-West macro-regions in Brazil, in the period 1970-2000. We observe that second order causes directly or indirectly are the main determinants of agglomeration. We also collect evidence that transportation cost are at intermediate levels in these regions. c) In the third paper, we investigate if access to markets determines the (transitional) growth rate of per capita income. It does, but in a differentiated manner accordingly mainly to the macro-region from which the micro-region belongs. / Economia e Finan??as

The present work shows the development of an embedded system to perform the monitoring of an squirrel cage induction motor rotor physical variables, transforming the magnetic energy from the stator rotating field into electrical energy to energize the embedded system circuit, providing further data for the machine maintenance diagnosis. The system comprises: circuit to acquire desirable rotor variable(s) value(s) and send it to thecomputer; a rectifier and power storege circuit that besides converting an alternating current in continuous also store energy for a certain amount of time to wait the motor engine shutdown; and magnetic generator that harvestenergy from rotating field to power the circuits mentioned above. The embedded system is set on the rotor of an 5 HP squirrel cage induction motor, making it difficult to power the system because it is rotating, problem solved with the construction of the magnetic generator eliminating the need of using batteries or collector rings and by using a wireless NRF24L01 module to send data to the computer. For the proposed system validation a temperature sensor (DS18b20) was applied, variable known as the most important when identifying the need for maintenance. Tests were made getting satisfactory results proving the viability of using sensors on the rotor.
