Temporal correlation between the acoustic activity of harbor porpoise and the movement activity of their prey species at Kullaberg, Sweden

Montgomerie, Emily January 2015 (has links)
The harbor porpoise is considered a threatened species in Swedish waters. A full understanding of its ecology and relationship to other species is important when designing effective conservation plans. This thesis aims to investigate the relationships between harbor porpoises and their prey by comparing the acoustic activity patterns of harbor porpoises and the movement patterns of some of their prey species available at Kullaberg, Sweden. For this purpose, the scientific literature of porpoise and fish activity patterns has been reviewed. Results show that harbor porpoises may follow vertically migrating herring, but further studies are needed to confirm this. It is also possible that the activity pattern of porpoises does not follow exactly the movements of a certain species of prey, but that they rather feed upon several species, and therefore change their behavior accordingly throughout the diurnal cycle.

In 2008, Brazil imported from Norway about 30 thousand tones of this products, at a cost of approximately US$ 190 million. The cod is one of the most popular salted dry product in this country, but related species of lower commercial value, are also used in the manufacture of salted dried fish and often commercialized as the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). The variation of the stable isotopes ratio of carbon (13C/12C) and nitrogen (15N/14N) is measured with high precision mass spectrometry isotope ratio (IRMS), and in the last 20 years there was a significant increase of this technology, applied in the evaluation of frauds and food adulterations. The aim of this work was to utilize stable isotope of 15N and 13C in identification of codfish and related species. Utilizing the isotopic analysis in muscles and bones, it was possible to differentiate cod (Atlantic and Pacific) from Ling, Zarbo and Saithe (p < 0.01), which are three salted dried products of lower commercial value. Through the skin it was not possible to distinguish between Pacific cod and Ling (p > 0.05). The combination of analysis 15N values of different tissues – muscle, skin and bones – enable the separation of species. The graphic comparison of the 15N values of muscle vs. skin, muscle vs. bones and skin vs. bones allow to establish three regions of confidence: one with Atlantic cod and Pacific cod; another with Ling and Zarbo; and finally, one third region with Saithe isolated of all. The results obtained demonstrate that the methodology is feasible to distinguish between cod and other salted dried fish. Nevertheless, a more secure conclusions will be obtained with a database, to do a historic of isotopic origin of these fishes

Orientador: João Sinezio de Carvalho Campos / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Quimica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-08T07:22:01Z (GMT). This work describes the application of electroflocculation in the effluent of a paper industry and its technical and economical feasible assessment. The aluminum and iron electrodes were compared, being the first tested with a current density of 211 A/m2 and the second with 169 A/m2 in a reactor of 20 L and the behavior of parameters pH, conductivity, temperature, turbidity, COD, Settling Solids and BOD were monitored. With the aluminum electrode tested, there was an increase in pH value from 7,32 to 9,19; conductivity decreased as expected by the Al(OH)3 solubility diagram according to pH; the effluent temperature rised from 23,6ºC to 31,5ºC due to the Joule effect; turbidity has decreased 93%, COD 96%, Settling Solids 98% and BOD 99%. After treatment the final effluent has exhibited no residual color. The iron electrode has showed satisfactory results but not so promising as that obtained with aluminum. In this case, there were also an increase in pH value from 7,31 to 9,80; conductivity has decreased as expected by the Fe(OH)2 and Fe(OH)3 solubility diagrams as function of pH; the effluent temperature increased from 25,9ºC to 31,8ºC by the same reason ever explained with the aluminum electrode; turbidity has decreased 50%, COD 83%, Settling Solids 97% and BOD 84%. At the end of treatment, the effluent exhibited a quite strong yellow residual color, due to oxidation of iron ions (Fe2+ to Fe3+). Some of the main calculus regarded the energy consumption, that for both materials was 9,0 kWh/m3. The electrode consumption was 9,0 g for aluminum and 12,5 g for iron. The operating cost was 7,01 R$/m3 for aluminum and 2,84 R$/m3 for iron. The quantity of gases produced was 4,9 L of hydrogen and 2,51 L of oxygen. These results indicated that the electroflotation application in a comercial scale must be more investigated to reach optimization and total control of the quantity of gases generated and temperature rise / Mestrado / Ciencia e Tecnologia de Materiais / Mestre em Engenharia Química

The application of MnO2 and KMnO4 for persistent organic compounds and COD removals in wastewater treatment process.

Hendratna, Aileen January 2011 (has links)
This study examines the use of MnO2 and KMnO4 as strong oxidants to remove specific recalcitrant organic compounds and COD from wastewater. These compounds are deemed as potential and more cost-effective treatment in encountering the challenge to remove Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) and Endocrine Disrupter Compounds (EDCs) in wastewater to meet water reuse standard. The literature reviews concluded that both MnO2 and KMnO4 were able to remove recalcitrant organic compounds, such as 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2), Bisphenol A (BPA), triclosan, and dye wastewater. Simple bench scale experiments were performed to investigate COD removal by utilizing MnO2 and KMnO4 to oxidize sewage water and supernatant in a continuously stirred tank reactor at the wastewaters’ natural pH (about pH 8). The results indicated that MnO2 was effective in removing COD of wastewater and not affected by the high content of suspended solids. The effectiveness of KMnO4 in removing COD of wastewater was masked by its ability to break down and solubilize particulate organic compounds. MnO2 application could not be mixed with the presence of other metal ions (or flocculants) as their presence may inhibit the efficiency of MnO2 oxidation. On the other hand, KMnO4 oxidation efficiency was not affected and even was enhanced by the presence of magnesium and calcium ions as flocculants.
