Previous literature on the life and music of the Brazilian composer Francisca Edwiges Neves Gonzaga (1847-1935) reveals her as a historical figure of cultural and musical significance. Her contributions to society include political leadership in Brazilian campaigns for the abolition of slavery and artistic copyright. She also became the first female conductor in Brazil and shaped the music of Carnaval as it is known today in Brazil. However, her music is not well-known outside of Brazil, and her piano music has not received the attention that it merits. In addition to a closer look at her compositions for piano, this monograph offers biographical and musical details of Gonzaga’s unique career, including her role as a female composer amidst a patriarchal society; her pioneering synthesis of traditional Brazilian and European classical style, and a discussion of her place among her better-known Brazilian contemporaries, Ernesto Nazareth and Heitor Villa-Lobos. The last chapter presents interviews with living musicians—a pianist, a traditional folk artist and a musicologist—who have each continued the traditions of Gonzaga’s music to the present day. / Music Performance

Instruktioner har syftet att förmedla ett arbetssätt eller utförande av en uppgift som användaren sen tidigare inte är bekant med. För att instruktionen ska vara framgångsrik krävs dock att den utformas på ett sätt som gör den enkel att använda och att tolka korrekt. Större efterfrågan på kundanpassning och krav på flexibilitet gör att tillverkande företag i allt större omfattning behöver effektiva metoder för att ta fram instruktioner. På uppdrag av PartnerTech i Åtvidaberg genomfördes under vårterminen 2014 ett examensarbete inriktat mot att underlätta framtagning och revision av instruktioner. Vilka presentationsformer som bäst stödjer användaren var också del av det huvudsakliga målet. Utöver det önskades även en metod för att kategorisera produkter efter monteringskomplexitet, vilket skulle underlätta fördelning av personal. PartnerTech är en kontraktstillverkare som ständigt ställs inför nya produkter och produktionsscenarion, vilket medför löpande behov av nya instruktioner. Bakgrunden till initiativet för projektet ligger i att den nuvarande metoden inte upplevs som tillräckligt effektiv och att kunskap från vetenskapliga studier saknas. Examensarbetet har utförts av en student vid det maskintekniska programmet på Linköpings tekniska högskola. Projektet inleddes med en studie av nuläget och forskningsresultaten inom de berörda områdena. Därefter utvärderades mjukvaran SolidWorks Composer för att se vilka fördelar den skulle kunna bidra till, jämfört med det nuvarande arbetssättet. Ett förslag till en layout för en alternativ form av instruktion utarbetades utifrån fynden under litteraturstudien, vilken senare testades på verkliga produkter. Parallellt utvecklades en metod för att kategorisera produkterna som produceras i Åtvidaberg. Projektet resulterade i en alternativ layout för instruktionerna och ett förslag till ny presentationsmetod. Som framtagningsverktyg föreslås Microsoft Powerpoint, vilket använts under projektet och visat på flera fördelar mot nuvarande program. Istället för att som idag använda utskrivna papperskopior av instruktionerna föreslås presentation via bildskärmar i form av ett bildspel. Utvärderingen av SolidWorks Composer visade att det finns potential för att effektivisera framtagningen av bilder för instruktionerna, förutsatt att ett antal kriterier uppfylls. Metoden för kategorisering av produkterna resulterade i en checklista, baserad i huvudsak på ja/nej-frågor. / The purpose of instructions is to pass a strategy or method for work on to a previously unexperienced person. For an instruction to be successful it must be designed in a manner that allows easy use and correct interpretation. The increasing demand for customer customization and flexibility leads to an ever increasing need for manufacturing companies to create and utilize instructions in an effective way. On the behalf of PartnerTech in Åtvidaberg, a project was conducted as a master thesis during the spring semester of 2014, with the target of facilitating the creation and revision of instructions. How information should be presented to best support the user was also a main objective of the project. Beside this, a method for categorizing the company’s products was requested, to facilitate the allocation of personnel at the assembly lines. PartnerTech as a contract manufacturer is continuously challenged with new products at various development stages. As a consequence, instructions needs to be created regularly. The initiative for the project originates from the dissatisfaction related to the current method. The master thesis has been conducted by a student at the mechanical engineering program at Linköping University. The initial part of the project involved a study of the current method and the company’s needs, as well as research within the concerned areas. Later the software SolidWorks Composer was evaluated to see which possible benefits it could hold. A proposal for a new layout of the instructions was developed, based on the found literature during the research. Instructions was established using the layout and principles, which then was tested on real products. Parallel to this a method for categorizing the products was developed. The project resulted in an alternative layout for instructions and a proposal for a new presentation method. The tool proposed for creating and maintaining the instructions is Microsoft PowerPoint, which was used during the project and showed several benefits compared to the current software. The evaluation of SolidWorks Composer showed that there is potential for more effective creation of images for instructions, given that some criteria is fulfilled. The method for categorizing products resulted in a checklist, based essentially on yes/no-questions.

In order to aid companies in creating better workinginstructions Dassault Systémes has launched the product 3Dvia Composer.The company DELFOi is working with digital manufacturing on the Nordic market and is areseller of Dassault Systémes products. DELFOi wants to know if 3Dvia Composer hasanything valuable to add to their product portfolio, what profits may be gained from it andwhat type of costumers that can make use of the product. DELFOi also wants to know whatparts of the product life cycle that can be covered by 3Dvia Composer and how to implementthe program into their product portfolio.To achieve this five companies that operate in different parts of the product life cycle wasinterviewed in order to map how they work with instructions and to identify their needsregarding their methodology. Theories about man/machine-interface have been studied andthese theories, together with the result from the interviews, form the base from which thepossibilities of 3Dvia Composer are evaluated. The software is also compared to other similarsoftware in a benchmarking. A document that describes the implementation process for 3DviaComposer at a customer site is compiled and presented.The study shows that interactive working instructions has a lot of advantages and can solve alot of problems related to work instructions that are identified in this study. 3Dvia Composeris a competent software for creating interactive work instructions. De används idag av både frilansande designers och webbyråer som vill öka sin kostnadseffektivitet, men även av sådana som inte har någon erfarenhet alls inom webbutveckling. Syftet med denna typ av insticksmoduler är att förse användaren med de verktyg som behövs för att grafiskt skapa en webbsida. Detta examensarbete tittar närmare på de begränsningar Visual Composer medför i kombination med designmönstret Material Design och ramverket Materialize. Uppsatsen visar att Visual Composer kan vara ett bra verktyg för snabb prototyputveckling och för projekt med färre krav och designregler samt om det begränsade potential Visual Composers erbjuder även ses som ett eget designmönster redan tidigt i utvecklingen. / Page builders are becoming an increasingly popular tool in web development and are plugins for WordPress. Today they are used by both freelance designers and web agencies who want to increase their cost-effectiveness, but also by those who have no experience at all in web development. The purpose of this type of plugins is to provide the user with the tools needed to graphically create a web page. This practical thesis looks at the limitations Visual Composer cause in combination with Material Design principles and the framework Materialize. The thesis shows that Visual Composer can be a good tool for rapid prototyping and for projects with fewer requirements and design regulations and if the limited potential of Visual Composer is also seen as a design principle early on in development.

My recent engagement as music director and conductor of Robert Nelson’s A Room with a View (1992, rev. 2004) has offered me the valuable opportunity to work on an opera side by side with its composer. The purpose of this dissertation is to reconstruct the various stages of the process of creation, interpretation, and performance of a contemporary opera, addressing aspects of the collaboration between the composer and the conductor. The methodology used in my research is based primarily on direct observation and interview. The investigation is conducted from the perspective of a “participant-observer,” due to my personal involvement in the project, as music director and conductor first, and then as interviewer and researcher. The document will be organized in three sections: - the first chapter will establish the context and specific features of my research, providing a scholarly background in relation to the study of the relationship between composer and conductor; - the second chapter will focus on the process of composition in all its stages. I have defined this as the “extended creative process” of A Room with a View; - the third chapter will discuss the Michigan State University production of the opera, considering several aspects of the artistic collaboration between Robert Nelson and me, as well as my involvement in the process as conductor. Through my research, I wish to provide useful insight into the crucial aspects of the composition and the production of new music. In addition, the project aims to offer a fresh contribution to the investigation of the relationship between composers and interpreters, and perhaps could provide some background reference for an interrogation about the current state and the future of American opera.

André Mathieu (1929-1968), a Canadian composer and performer, received acclaim in Europe, Canada and United States from his earliest years. He revealed brilliant pianistic skill, and critics hailed him as the "young Canadian Mozart". Mathieu's early solo piano works, written mostly in ternary form, reveal an abundance of compositional ideas based on the influences of Romantic and Impressionist styles. However, when he began composing Piano Concerto No. 3, a much larger work, his lack of compositional training became evident. Formal weakness resulted in a disconnection between themes and lack of thematic and motivic development. Not until Mathieu studied with Swiss composer Arthur Honegger did he develop and clearly display a concept of formal structure. In this study, I will demonstrate that, through compositional studies with Arthur Honegger, André Mathieu assimilated a new approach to form, resulting in the discovery of his mature compositional voice found for the first time in the Piano Concerto No. 4. The synthesis of Romantic and Impressionistic styles in this concerto further contributes to the unique nature of this mature voice.This document is organized in six chapters. Chapter I reviews current literature on André Mathieu and his music and points out both the values and the limitations of this literature. Chapter II relates Mathieu's biography. Chapter III provides background information on Mathieu's solo piano works and four concerti, as well as the difficult pianistic techniques composed into those works. Chapter IV discusses the influences of Romantic and Impressionist styles in Piano Concerto No. 4 and how Mathieu synthesized both styles. Chapter V analyzes the form, motivic and thematic material, and rhythmic design of all three movements of Piano Concerto No. 4 and compares them with that of Piano Concerto No. 3. Honegger's influence also is discussed in Chapter V. Chapter VI is the conclusion. Musical examples throughout will illustrate points made.
