On The Effect Of Material Uncertainty And Matrix Cracks On Smart Composite Plate

Umesh, K 07 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Recent developments show the applications of smart structure in different engineering fields. Smart structures can be used for shape and vibration control, structural health monitoring etc. Smart materials can be integrated to composite structure to enhance its abilities. Fiber reinforced composites are the advanced materials of choice in aerospace applications due to its high strength and stiffness, light weight and ability to tailor according to the design requirements. Due to complex manufacturing process and varying operating conditions, composites are susceptible to variation in material properties and damages. The present study focuses on the effect of uncertainties in material properties and damages on a smart composite structure. A cantilevered composite plate with surface mounted piezoelectric sensor/ actuator is considered in this study. The sensors and the actuators are connected through a conventional feedback controller and the controller is configured for vibration control application. Matrix cracks are considered as damage in the composite plate. To study the effect of material uncertainty, probabilistic analysis is performed considering composite material properties and piezoelectric coefficients as independent Gaussian random variables. Numerical results show that there is substantial change in dynamic response of the smart composite plate due to material uncertainties and damage. Deviation due to material uncertainty and damage can be compensated by actively tuning the feedback control system. Feedback control parameters can be properly adjusted to match the baseline response. Here baseline case represents the response of the undamaged smart composite plate with deterministic material properties. The change in feedback control parameters are identified as damage indicator. Feedback control based damage detection method is proposed for structural health monitoring in smart composite structure and robustness of the method is studied considering material uncertainties. Fractal dimension based damage detection method is proposed to detect localized matrix cracks in a composite plate with spatially varying material properties. Variation in material properties follows a two dimensional homogeneous Gaussian random field. Fractal dimension is used to extract the damage information from the static response of composite plate with localized matrix cracks. It is found that fractal dimension based approach is capable of detecting the location of the single and multiple damages from the static deflection curve. Robustness of the fractal dimension based damage detection method is studied considering spatial uncertainties in material properties.

Study of a Particle Based Films Cure Process by High-Frequency Eddy Current Spectroscopy

Patsora, Iryna, Tatarchuk, Dmytro, Heuer, Henning, Hillmann, Susanne 28 March 2017 (has links)
Particle-based films are today an important part of various designs and they are implemented in structures as conductive parts, i.e., conductive paste printing in the manufacture of Li-ion batteries, solar cells or resistive paste printing in IC. Recently, particle based films were also implemented in the 3D printing technique, and are particularly important for use in aircraft, wind power, and the automotive industry when incorporated onto the surface of composite structures for protection against damages caused by a lightning strike. A crucial issue for the lightning protection area is to realize films with high homogeneity of electrical resistance where an in-situ noninvasive method has to be elaborated for quality monitoring to avoid undesirable financial and time costs. In this work the drying process of particle based films was investigated by high-frequency eddy current (HFEC) spectroscopy in order to work out an automated in-situ quality monitoring method with a focus on the electrical resistance of the films. Different types of particle based films deposited on dielectric and carbon fiber reinforced plastic substrates were investigated in the present study and results show that the HFEC method offers a good opportunity to monitor the overall drying process of particle based films. Based on that, an algorithm was developed, allowing prediction of the final electrical resistance of the particle based films throughout the drying process, and was successfully implemented in a prototype system based on the EddyCus® HFEC device platform presented in this work. This prototype is the first solution for a portable system allowing HFEC measurement on huge and uneven surfaces.

Zur hierarchischen und simultanen Multi-Skalen-Analyse von Textilbeton

Lepenies, Ingolf G. 15 November 2007 (has links)
The present work deals with the simulation and the prediction of the effective material behavior of the high performance composite textile reinforced concrete (TRC) subjected to tension. Based on a hierarchical material model within a multi scale approach the load bearing mechanisms of TRC are modeled on three structural scales. Therewith, the mechanical parameters characterizing the composite material can be deduced indirectly by experimentally determined force displacement relations obtained from roving pullout tests. These parameters cannot be obtained by contemporary measuring techniques directly. A micro-meso-macro-prediction model (MMM-PM) for TRC is developed, predicting the macroscopic material behavior by means of simulations of the microscopic and the mesoscopic material behavior. The basis is the qualitative and quantitative identification of the bond properties of the roving-matrix system. The partial impregnation of the rovings and the corresponding varying bond qualities are identified to characterize the bond behavior of rovings in a fine-grained concrete matrix. The huge variety of roving cross-sections is approximated by superellipses on the meso scale. The macroscopic behavior of TRC subjected to tension including multiple cracking of the matrix material is correctly predicted on the basis of the micro- and meso-mechanical models. The calibration and verification of the MMM-PM is performed by simulations of roving pullout tests, whereas a first validation is carried out by a comparison of the numerical predictions with the experimental data from tensile tests. The MMM-PM for TRC is applied to tensile tests of structural members made of TRC. Furthermore, a steel-reinforced concrete plate strengthened by a TRC layer is accurately simulated yielding the macroscopic deflection of the plate, the mesoscopic stress state of the roving and the microscopic stresses of the filaments.

Tragverhalten von Textilbeton unter Biege- und Querkraftbeanspruchung

Hegger, Josef, Will, Norbert, Zell, Maike 03 June 2009 (has links)

Wet-chemical method for the metallization of a para-aramid filament yarn wound on a cylindrical dyeing package

Onggar, Toty, Amrhein, Gosbert, Abdkader, Anwar, Hund, Rolf-Dieter, Cherif, Chokri 05 November 2019 (has links)
High-performance yarns such as aramid fibers are nowadays used to reinforce composite materials due to their advantageous physico-chemical properties and their low weight. They are also resistant to heat and fire. Para-aramid filament yarns (p-AFs) wound on a cylindrical dyeing package have been silvered successfully by means of a newly developed wetchemical filament yarn metallization process on a laboratory scale. The surface morphology of untreated and silvered p-AF was determined by means of scanning electron microscopy. The chemical structure of the surfaces (contents of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and silver) was determined by means of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The eliminated and newly formed groups of p-AF before and after silvering were detected by infrared spectroscopy (Fourier transform—attenuated total reflectance). After metallization, the silver layer thickness, the mass-related silver content and washing and rubbing fastness were assessed. Furthermore, textile-physical examinations concerning Young’s modulus, elongation at break and electrical conductivity were performed. Subsequently, the electrically conductive p-AFs were integrated in thermoset composite materials reinforced by glass fibers and para-aramid.

Cosmopolis Pol, Grecia January 2023 (has links)
Its most likely nowadays that any object around us has been at some moment in its life inside a cargo truck, since these are indispensable for the transportation of any type of element. From food, clothing, furniture, construction materials, to heavy machinery is transported by these heavy vehicles. For this reason, they are considered an essential part of the world economy, but when subjected to heavy loads, they produce a great amount of environmental pollution, due to the fuel they use. The objective of this research is to reduce the fuel consumption of the truck by implementing GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) as the main material in the chassisinstead of the Steel commo nly used in its manufacture. The methodology used started with the sizing of the chassis and the mechanical properties of the GFRP were evaluated and then proceeded to the static-frequency simulation of the chassis, the results of the simulations were compared with the Steel alloy AISI 4135, to finally proceed to calculate the fuel consumption of the truck with the new material. By changing the material, the weight of the truck was reduced by 536Kg, which generate a saving of 438.4 L in fuel consumption, resulting in a economic saving of S/.1995,31.

Scaling Effects on Damage Development, Strength, and Stress-Rupture Life on Laminated Composites in Tension

Lavoie, J. André 04 April 1997 (has links)
The damage development and strength of ply-level scaled carbon/epoxy composite laminates having stacking sequence of [+Tn/-Tn/902n]s where constraint ply angle, T, was 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 degrees, and size was scaled as n=1,2,3, and 4, is reported in Part I. X-radiography was used to monitor damage developments. First-ply failure stress, and tensile strength were recorded. First-ply failure of the midplane 90 deg. plies depended on the stiffness of constraint plies, and size. All 24 cases were predicted using Zhang's shear-lag model and data generated from cross-ply tests. Laminate strength was controlled by the initiation of a triangular-shaped local delamination of the surface angle plies. This delamination was predicted using O'Brien's strain energy release rate model for delamination of surface angle plies. For each ply angle, the smallest laminate was used to predict delamination (and strength) of the other sizes. The in-situ tensile strength of the 0 deg. plies within different cross-ply, and quasi-isotropic laminates of varying size and stacking sequence is reported in Part II. No size effect was observed in the strength of 0 deg. plies for those lay-ups having failure confined to the gauge section. Laminates exhibiting a size-strength relationship, had grip region failures for the larger sizes. A statistically significant set of 3-point bend tests of unidirectional beams were used to provide parameters for a Weibull model, to re-examine relationship between ultimate strength of 0 deg. plies and specimen volume. The maximum stress in the 0 deg. plies in bending, and the tensile strength of the 0 deg. plies (from valid tests only) was the same. Weibull theory predicted loss of strength which was not observed in the experiments. An effort to model the durability and life of quasi-isotropic E-glass/913 epoxy composite laminates under steady load and in an acidic environment is reported in Part III. Stress-rupture tests of unidirectional coupons immersed in a weak hydrochloric acid solution was conducted to determine their stress-life response. Creep tests were conducted on unidirectional coupons parallel and transverse to the fibers, and on ±45°. layups to characterize the lamina stress- and time-dependent compliances. These data were used in a composite stress-rupture life model, based on the critical element modeling philosophy of Reifsnider, to predict the life of two ply-level thickness-scaled quasi-isotropic laminates. / Ph. Effect of polymer matrix on the rheology of hydroxapatite filled polyethylene composites.

Martyn, Michael T., Joseph, R., McGregor, W.J., Tanner, K.E., Coates, Philip D. January 2002 (has links)
No / The effect of matrix polymer and filler content on the rheological behavior of hydroxyapatite-filled injection molding grade high-density polyethylene (HDPE) has been studied. Studies of the flow curves revealed that the matrix and the composite exhibit three distinct regions in the flow curve, namely, a pseudoplastic region at low to moderate shear rates, a plateau and a second pseudoplastic region at high shear rates. The shear stress corresponding to the plateau (Tc) is dependent on both the filler concentration and the melt temperature. Addition of HA in the HDPE matrix increases the value of Tc and decreases compressibility of the melt. An increase in temperature also raises the value of Tc. From the nature of flow curves it is concluded that the matrix polymer largely decides the rheology of the composite.

Approches hyperélastiques pour la modélisation du comportement mécanique de préformes tissées de composites / Hyperelastic approaches to model the mechanical behaviour of woven preforms of composites

Charmetant, Adrien 13 December 2011 (has links)
Simulating the preforming stage of RTM-like fabric-reinforced composites manufactoring processes is a major stake for industries which use such materials. During such processes, the woven preform often undergoes finite deformations. Simulation methods are then required to optimize the conception of composites parts formed by RTM. An analysis of the mechanical behaviour of woven preforms at mesoscale is first presented. A transversely isotropic hyperelastic behaviour law is developped in order to describe the mechanical behaviour of each deformation mode of the yarn : elongation in the direction of fibres, compaction and distorsion in the transverse plane and along-fibres shear. An identification method is set up for this behaviour law which allows to compute its parameters by use of simple experimental tests on the yarn and on the fabric. The behaviour law is then validated by comparizon between simulations ans experimental tests. An analysis of the mechanical behaviour of interlock woven preforms at macroscale is the presented. An orthotropic hyperelastic behaviour law is developped and implemented as an extension of the behaviour law for the yarn. A phenomenological approach is also used to describe the mechanical behaviour of each deformation mode of the preform. An identification method is set up and put into place, based on tests well known in the field of fabric reinforcements : tensile test, crushing test, bias extension test, flexure test. A hemispherical stamping simulation is set up and compared to experiment for validation purpose.
