Le stoïcisme impérial et la conversion philosophique

Ce mémoire cherche à mieux comprendre le phénomène de la conversion philosophique dans l'Antiquité, plus particulièrement dans le stoïcisme impérial (Sénèque, Épictète, Marc Aurèle). Après une analyse conceptuelle de la conversion qui s'appuie sur des sources contemporaines, ce mémoire fait l'étude des interprétations de la conversion stoïcienne par Pierre Hadot et Michel Foucault. Cette étude se conclut sur le constat de problèmes importants dans ces deux interprétations. Ce mémoire poursuit avec une analyse lexicologique des termes grec (epistrophè) et latin (conversio) pouvant désigner la conversion dans le corpus stoïcien. Cette analyse se termine sur un autre constat d'échec, rejetant ces termes comme des traductions du concept de conversion. Le dernier chapitre de ce mémoire montre qu'en inscrivant le stoïcisme et Épictète en particulier dans la tradition protreptique socratique on peut mieux comprendre la conversion stoïcienne.

PCI BASED TELEMETRY DECOMMUTATION BOARD

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1998 / Town & Country Resort Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California / The Space Sensing & Vehicle Control Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory and Voss Scientific, Albuquerque, NM, are developing an advanced PC and COTS-based satellite telemetry processing, analysis and display system known as the PC-Satellite Telemetry Server (PC-STS). This program grew out of a need to develop less expensive, more capable, more flexible, and expandable solutions to the satellite telemetry analysis requirements of the Air Force. Any new system must employ industry standard, open architecture, network and database protocols allowing for easy growth and migration to new technologies, as they become available. Thus, the PC-STS will run on standard personal computers and the Windows NT operating system. The focus of this work and this paper is the Telemetry Server component, and in particular, the custom-built decommutation board. The decommution board will be capable of processing frame formatted and CCSDS packet telemetry. It will be capable of fully decommutating telemetry data, converting raw data to engineering units, and providing this data to the Telemetry Server host. Time tagged engineering units or minor frames of telemetry will be transmitted to the Telemetry Server processor via on-board memory buffers. The decom board uses the PCI bus, programmable DSPs, considerable on-board memory, and a SCSI bus for local archiving. This paper presents the general architecture of the PC-STS, and discusses specific design considerations. These include trade-offs made during the design of the board’s hardware and software, operational specifications, and graphical user interfaces to program, monitor, and control the board.

Diabetes Reduces the Rate of Sputum Culture Conversion in Patients with Newly Diagnosed Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis

Background: Risk factors for acquired multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) are well described but risk factors of primary MDR TB is understudied. We aimed to 1) assess risk factors for primary MDR TB, including diabetes, and 2) determine if diabetes reduced the rate of sputum culture conversion in patients with primary MDR TB. Methods: From 2011-2014 we conducted a prospective cohort study at the National Center for TB and Lung Disease in Tbilisi, Georgia. Adult (≥35 years) patients with primary TB were eligible. MDR TB was defined as resistance to at least rifampicin and isoniazid. Patients with HbA1c ≥6.5% were defined to have diabetes. Polytomous regression was used to estimate the association of patient characteristics with drug resistance. Cox regression was used to compare the hazard rate of sputum culture conversion in patients with and without diabetes. Results: Among 318 patients, 268 had drug susceptibility test results. Among patients with DST results, 19.4% was primary MDR TB and 13.4% had diabetes. In adjusted analyses, diabetes (aOR 2.51 95%CI 1.00 – 6.31) and lower socioeconomic status (aOR 3.51 95%CI 1.56 – 8.20) were associated with primary MDR TB. Among patients with primary MDR TB, 44 (84.6%) converted sputum cultures to negative. The hazard rate of sputum culture conversion was lower among patients with diabetes (aHR 0.34 95%CI 0.13 – 0.87) and among smokers (aHR 0.16 95%CI 0.04 – 0.61). Conclusions: We found diabetes to be associated with an increased risk of primary MDR TB; both diabetes and smoking were associated with a decreased rate of sputum culture conversion.

DESIGN OF A DIGITAL VOICE ENCODER CIRCUIT

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 30-November 02, 1995 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada / This paper describes the design and characteristics of a digital voice encoding circuit that uses the continuously variable slope delta (CVSD) modulation/demodulation method. With digital voice encoding, the audio signal can be placed into the pulse code modulation (PCM) data stream. Some methods of digitizing voice can require a large amount of bandwidth. Using the CVSD method, an acceptable quality of audio signal is obtained with a minimum of bandwidth. Presently, there is a CVSD microchip commercially available; however, this paper will describe the design of a circuit based on individual components that apply the CVSD method. With the advances in data acquisition technology, increased bit rates, and introduction of a corresponding MIL-STD, CVSD modulated voice will become more utilized in the flight test programs and a good knowledge of CVSD will become increasingly important. This paper will present CVSD theory, supported by graphical investigations of a working circuit under different conditions. Finally, several subjects for further study into CVSD will be addressed.

Test cases for determining behavior of routines of this type will also be supplied.

DIGITAL DATA RECORDING: NEW WAYS IN DATA PROCESSING

The three most important improvements are discussed in this paper: A) By processing PCM Data from a digital recorder by using the SCSI-Interface our ground station has developed software to detect the synchronization pattern of the PCM data and then perform software frame decommutation. Many advantages will be found with this method. B) New digital recorders already use the CCSDS Standard as the internal recording format. Once this technique is implemented in our ground station’s software and becomes part of our software engineering team’s general know-how, the switch to CCSDS telemetry in the future will require no quantum leap in effort. C) Digital recorders offer a very new application: Writing data to a digital tape in the recorder’s own format, allows the replay of data using the recorder’s interfaces; i.e. writing vibration data from the host system to tape, using the analog format of the digital recorder, allows the analysis of the data either in analog form, using the analog interface of the recorder, or in digital form.

Controversies of conversions : the potential terrorist threat of European converts to Islam

The conventional wisdom regarding European converts to Islam is based on the premise that the majority lack the necessary religious knowledge and being thus unable to discern between the various interpretations of Islam, they constitute easy prey for radicals. Moreover, the myth of “convert's zeal” contributes to the belief that being ready to prove their dedication to the new faith and community, converts are ready and willing do to everything, including the most atrocious acts of political violence. This thesis focuses on the question that asks: Under what conditions do converts to Islam coming from indigenous European societies radicalise? In other words, which factors determine both their non-violent (ideological) and violent (with subsequent engagement in terrorism) radicalisation? Consequently, the research aims to examine what the radicalisation mechanisms are that may lead to such an activity, to determine possible regularities and to analyse viable implications pertaining to countering them. The research aims to establish the conditions under which conversion leads to radicalisation and terrorist violence; analyse recrudescent concomitances of causal mechanisms of this phenomenon; explore possible pathways existing between conversion, radicalisation and terrorist violence; identify key variables pertaining to causal pathways and processes; provide hypotheses regarding the radicalisation pathways, and establish a typology that can serve as a basis for further studies. In this way the thesis contributes to the existing body of knowledge on the processes of radicalisation, establishing a base for further studies and enabling others to follow with more nuanced and elaborate theories in order to provide contingent recommendations for policy makers. By dispelling many stereotypes concerning European New Muslims this thesis offers a new, contextual approach to the researched question thus inviting the reader to reconsider the concepts of “convert”, “radicalisation” and “potential”- crucial for analysing the widely expressed assumptions that European converts to Islam are a homogenous “risk group” and a security threat.

Identification and characterization of a positive regulatory region for activation induced cytidine deaminase mediated gene conversion in chicken B cells

B cells have unique machinery to make up a large pool of antibody repertoire. After V(D)J recombination in early B cell development, the rearranged immunoglobulin genes are further diversified by somatic hypermutation (SHM), gene conversion (GC) and class switch recombination (CSR). Acitvation induced cytidine deaminase (AID) is a key initiating factor for SHM, GC and CSR. A majority of research data supports the model that AID modifies Ig genes at the DNA level by deaminating cytosines to uracils. The mutagenic activity of AID is largely restricted to Ig genes to avoid genomic instability in general. The specificity cannot be attributed to the primary sequence of the Ig genes since unrelated DNA is mutated by AID in the context of Ig genes. A clue to this problem is that AID function is dependent on transcription. Since not all transcribed genes are mutated by AID, there must be something special about the transcription of Ig genes, and the reasoning has prompted extensive analysis of Ig promoters and enhancers. We addressed this question in chicken B cell line DT40. We identified a 2.4-kilobase regulatory region which is important for AID function both within and outside of Ig locus. This regulatory region contains binding sites for multiple transcription factors. Mutation of these binding sites impairs AID mediated gene conversion. In addition, ablation of NF-κB family member, c-Rel and p50, reduces the AID targeting function of this regulatory region. Since the implicated transcription factors have been reported to associate with histone acetylases, the regulatory region may function by facilitating the access of AID to target DNA. To test this hypothesis, we used the I-SceI endonuclease and dam methylase as probes for chromatin structure. We found that the regulatory region does not increase chromatin accessibility to these probes. In fact, the regulatory region appears to interfere with the cleavage of target DNA by I-SceI. Another possible role of the regulatory region could be direct recruitment of AID to Ig genes. To test this hypothesis, we utilized Dam identification method. Surprisingly, we found that the regulatory region facilitates AID targeting to the Igλ locus. / text

Cet ouvrage se penche sur le concept de conversion et évalue sa pertinence à la lumière de l'ethnographie d'une population de Papouasie occidentale, les Asmat. Son originalité tient au caractère récent de l'évangélisation (depuis 1953), à la transformation de pratiques culturelles asmat complexes telles que la chasse aux têtes, et à la présence simultanée de missionnaires catholiques et protestants (essentiellement croisiers et évangéliques). Réalisée en des circonstances politiques tendues, l'ouvrage compare ces derniers d'un point de vue anthropologique et ecclésiologique et leur influence réciproque sur les populations. Au-delà du champ strictement religieux, l'évangélisation se décline dans de nombreux domaines de la vie : architecture, dation du nom, organisation du temps, alimentation, sorcellerie, relations familiales, ancestralité, rapports entre l'homme et la nature, parures corporelles, sexualité, funérailles, etc. Complétant cette étude, il est proposé une anthropologie du missionnaire pionnier grâce à l'immersion du chercheur dans les communautés et les familles missionnaires. Enfin, les notions de "chrétien" et de "converti" sont au cœur d'une polémique divisant ceux qui se revendiquent de la foi chrétienne. Entre constructions théoriques connexes autour de la conversion apparaît un vide théorique qu'un nouveau concept s'apprête à combler : l'enchristianisation.
