Enhancement of Critical Care Response Teams Through the Use of Electronic Nursing-mediated Vital Signs Surveillance

Yeung, Melanie 17 February 2010 (has links)
Failure to recognize changes in a patient’s clinical condition is a barrier to the effectiveness of CCRT outreach programs. The development of a vital signs capture and decision system could alert care providers and CCRTs when a patient’s clinical condition deteriorates. However, point-of-care vital signs capture and documentation is often problematic in clinical practice. Ethnographic research was conducted to understand the difficulties of replacing pen and paper charts and barriers to electronic nursing documentation systems. Analysis of workflows directed the design of two solutions; 1) Apple iPhone facilitated manual vital signs entry, 2) Motorola MC55 enabled automatic data capturing from physiological monitors. Nurses participated in high-fidelity usability testing, comparing the traditional method of paper documentation with the two electronic solutions. As a result of user-centered design process, both solutions were comparable to the efficiency of paper methods, were found acceptable to nurses, and could be successfully incorporated into current workflows.

Nyutbildade intensivvårdssjuksköterskors uppfattningar om sin yrkeskompetens / Newly graduated critical care nurses perception of their professional competence

Dahlberg, Emelia, Larsson, Maria January 2012 (has links)
Tio deltagare medverkade i studien. Resultat: I resultatet framkom två huvudkategorier. / Background: The work in a critical care unit is posing great demands on the newly graduated critical care nurses competence. During the first episode in the profession a process of socialization occurs, where the newly graduated acquire the knowledge and skills needed in the profession. The newly graduated critical care nurses competence is not considered to meet the caregiver’s demands. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the newly graduated critical care nurses perceptions of their competence. Method: The study was conducted with a qualitative approach. Interviews were used as datacollection method. Ten participants were included in the study. Interviews were analyzed after a modified variant of Graneheim and Lundman’s qualitative content analysis. Results: The results revealed two main categories. The first major category revealed that the newly graduated critical care nurses continuously developed their skills. The development was promoted by positive attitudes to the work, use of past experiences and collaboration. The major second category revealed that the newly graduated critical care nurses perceived a lack of clinical experiences, difficulties to incorporate themselves with the new professional role and difficulties with priority. Conclusion: The newly graduated critical care nurses are not entirely prepared for the future profession. They have good theoretical knowledge but lack in practical skills. The result is confirmed by previous studies and Benner’s description of what characterizes the nurse as a novice.

Lögde, Ann January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this study was to learn how students in specialist nurse education with direction towards nurse anaesthetist experienced tutorial given during their specialist placement.  The chosen method of the study was qualitative interview with phenomenological approach. Twelve nurse anaesthetist students were interviewed about their experiences during their placement at operation wards. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed according to Giorgios (1985) analyze method. The result showed that the students considered that a well functioned tutorial was essential for a successful clinic placement. The tutorial considered as satisfactory if the student and the tutor managed to have good communication and a good relation with each other. The students self-confidence could sometimes feel reduced when they experienced that the position as a student collided with their former profession identity as a nurse. Many different categories of students compete of the space around the patient, the student considered that fact as an obstacle in their education. Through confirmation on a regular bases and feedback from the tutor the student could gain self-confident, and thereafter gain the ability to perform independent. The students experienced mixed feelings at the prospect of their upcoming profession and the view of themselves as future tutors. Conclusion: The students' experience of tutoring during specialist nurse education with direction towards nurse anaesthetist shows that tutorial of good quality is essential to a successful clinic placement.   Keywords: nursing instructors, clinical educators, nurse education, critical care, confirming, students, experience.

Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av hur medicinteknik inverkar på omvårdnaden : Intervjustudie från akutmottagning / Nurses experience of how medicine technology impacts the caring : Interview study from a critical care unit

Lidbeck, Mattias January 2011 (has links)
Sjuksköterskan använder medicintekniken dagligen i omvårdnaden. / Background: The medicine technology is getting more advanced with each year. The nurse is using it daily in the care. The patient is a subject which means it is more than a body. Medical technology when used improperly by the nurse can change the view of the patient and turn the patient into an object. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe nurses' experiences. How it is working with medical technology in the care is and how nurses believe that medical technology impact on nursing care. Method: Qualitative content analysis was used by Graneheim and Lundman (2004). The data were collected through interviews with seven nurses that are working in a critical care unit. Result: Based on the analysis different categories were found: Caring knowledge, claims on the nurse, quality, approach and nursing focus. Conclusion: The nurse is depending on the medicine technology for the care to work. Medical technology has a negative impact on nursing care, if the nurse does not reflect on why medical technology is used in the first place.

Dagbok på IVA-patienters upplevelser : En litteraturöversikt

Blomgren, Pernilla, Pihlström, Maria January 2011 (has links)

"Challenging families": the roles of design and culture in nurse-family interactions in a high acuity intensive care unit

Rippin, Allyn Sager 18 March 2011 (has links)
The trend towards patient-and family-centered care (PFCC) invites families of critically ill patients to participate more fully in the care and recovery of their loved ones through partnerships with the medical team and personalized care that respects the values, beliefs and experiences of the individual. In response to the growing needs of families, healthcare institutions are re-designing the way patient and family care is delivered in terms of policy, culture and the physical environment. Despite the many benefits that come with closer collaboration, nurses report that "challenging" families are a key source of workplace stress. This exploratory case study documents some of these challenges as perceived by staff nurses at Emory University Hospital's Neuro ICU while examining the role the built environment plays in shaping such perceptions. Through a series of ethnographic interviews and observational methodologies, the study identifies some of the challenges and benefits that come with balancing patient and family needs. Nurse strategies developed to reassert spatial and temporal control over work environments are also identified. The second phase of research compares communication patterns generated from two different ICUs to explore the link between unit design and the frequency and quality of nurse-family interactions. Findings suggest that space plays a role in moderating the degree of nurse exposure to the often unstructured and unpredictable aspects of family interactions. These encounters, set within a highly charged critical care setting, may contribute to these perceived challenges. Healthcare stands at an important moment of transition in which attitudes, behaviors and expectations are changing. Together these results reinforce the need for adequate tools, training and education to further support nurses in the transition to this new care culture.
